i'm 35 and I host a yearly night with all my old high school and elementary school friends i grew up with. I buy 3 cases of beers, order 4 extra large pizzas, and usually about 15 of us party, drink and play video games all night. it's my favourite night of the year.. Game nights are the best man!

About 7 years ago, my best friend and I played through Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess over the span of about 2 weeks. We were just in the zone, passing the controller back and forth and helping each other solve the puzzles. It's one of those times in my life I will always look back on and cherish.

31 now, a father, husband, 3 pets, house, job, UA-cam channel, exercise, juggling extended family etc.
I just had this night. Nay, this weekend. Wife took my son to her friends so he can hangout with some kids his age, and I stayed home with my fresh new copy of Kingdom Hearts 3. I had a 3 hour nap after work, and I stayed up until 630am playing the crap out of that game. A game I've waited for, for 13 years. I did what you did. Got some food, and zoned into nothing else but the game.
Got up, ate the old food, and dove back in. After 25 hours, the game was beat. It was euphoric. I haven't done that since I was a bachelor in college. It felt AMAZING. I shed some tears at the end both for the game itself and for the experience I just had. This video resonated with me big time, and I'm so happy you had this night for yourself. Sometimes we just need it. Love this video, and this channel, and it inspires me to work harder on my own. Thank you for sharing this experience with us, we can truly see your passion and it's enlightening in this day and age.

Period with 11 goals each. went into the first overtime, 13 each. 2nd overtime, no goals and in sudden death i beat him 14 to 13. we were sweating from the intensity and the drama and we shook hands and thanked us for the awesome game. we never played NHL against each other again but we talked about this match for years to come

Playing through Pokemon Crystal always gives me that same feeling. My brothers and I taking turns with a yellow Gameboy Color in the back seat of my moms Chevy Astro. We’d lean near the window at night as we passed streetlights, because there weren’t backlights then. Freaking out as we found one of the legendary dogs roaming near Goldenrod. Then our power light would get dimmer and the AA batteries we stole from the TV remote would fail us, and we hadn’t saved in two hours of driving.

Johnny, I’m a bit late on finding and watching this video (even though I’ve been a fan since 10+ years ago), but I just had to comment. This episode is definitely in my top 3 favorite of yours. NOONE can convey as much passion for gaming as you. What you said about “truly great video gaming memories cannot be forced, and just happen unexpectedly” is so true, and I’ve experienced that so many times. Everything just lines up. Your mental state. The weather outside. The time of day. This happened with me on Shenmue. I stayed home sick from school (legit fever), and it was raining outside. Even though I felt bad, I was happy I didn’t have to be at school, and I just had happened to have picked up Shenmue. That morning, after everyone had left for school and work, and I was alone under a blanket, listening to the rain hit the window behind me, I turned on the Dreamcast, and the start up screen lit up the dark cold room. Then came the Shenmue starting screen music. Oh what a day. Everything lined up perfectly. It enabled me to LIVE in that world. I was in Japan. I was Ryo. It became my favorite game of all time. And it is a big influence on why I currently now live in Japan. I hope I can have another video gaming memory like that soon… The most recent one in memory would have to be Subnautica. Playing that with my wife each night after work. Both of us scared out of our minds. Her organizing my inventory, but passing me the controller whenever she dove beyond 300m and got scared. It’s a wonderful game. Please do try it if you haven’t. Anyways, thank you for the video and memories.

Johnny- you’re review is touching. I swear you and I had the same video game childhoods. Phantasy Star changed my life as a 12 year old. Me and a friend played this game for weeks back in 1988- it is, without a doubt, the greatest game in history. Now, over 30 years later, me and my 10 year old daughter, played through “Ages” together this week. I was able to share an important part of my childhood with her- and the best part is she is in love with the game too. She’s working through it again, now. Next- Ys Ages? Miracle Warrior Ages? Golvellius Ages? I’m sure you’re with me on those, Johnny. Your channel’s a blessing for an old Sega guy like me. Keep it up.

It is definitely a fun experience for an RPG fan. I have no nostalgic connection to any RPG from the 32 bit era back (except for Pokemon), and I picked it up just because I enjoy the series after picking it up well after their releases. It feels so much more modern because of the things like the exp boost, the FM sound chip option, the bestiary (it helps a lot more than you would think), and more so than any other thing mentioned, the automap. Overall it is just a solid experience.

I had a night a couple years ago where my wife actually got sick (long before Covid) and she wound up going to bed early. It left me with nothing to do, but I actually had just started playing The Messenger. I didn’t want to wake her, so I had my headphones on, with the bass jacked up, the lights dim, on our newer big screen TV. I was just totally wrapped up in the game for like 3 or 4 hours and I think back on that night so fondly.

This story made me so happy. I got good feels just hearing you describe it. I recaptured the feeling I had as a kid playing the RE2 remake. At 30 years old, my heart was pounding just like when I played it as a kid! Such an amazing feeling! Also, totally agree with Dominos handmade pan pizza! Amazing!

I’m right there with you. I replayed Phantasy Star on Switch & what a great time it was. The addition of the map & the faster pacing with double the amount of gold & level experience made for a very smooth gameplay. Phantasy Star was the very first RPG, very first GAME I’ve ever played. Glad I got to relive the experience s

Hey Johnny, I had a similar experience playing Phantasy Star on the Switch. It was so much fun. It did feel like it did the first time I played it back around the time when it was released. Great video!

That sounds like an awesome evening! I remember a few years ago I went back and played Skyrim and I played non-stop for 12 hours because of how addicted and immersed I was! Best gaming day ever!

Me and my friend finish silent hill 1 & 2 wayy back in 2017 without saving.....I was in the zone. It just felt like the same feeling we got all those years. Well maybe a little less scared this time around. But IT WAS GREAT. we had takeout too. It was just so nostalgic. And the music. wow. completely amazing. Its great reliving those moments.

I have that same feeling sometimes for Final fantasy 6 which is my favorite game ever. Haven't played it in at least 10 years. Just the story the music and the graphics are absolutely amazing for me. Hearing you talk about your favorite games makes me appreciate this channel as much as I do. Thank you.
