Yes I really want to do more d3 runs, but right now I have so many d2 videos I want to make. I think I would do another challenge completely though rather than weaponless in another character.
Here's my reasoning: The game treats shields as armor, not weapons. And shield bash uses weapon damage to calculate its damage even if the animation is with a shield.
A fun challenge to watch and hear about. I loved D2 and played a fair amount of D3, but was very disappointed with it in the end, haven't touched it in years. Pre release we got to see skill trees, and other screenshots and then it launched with just unlocking skills via leveling and no actual player choice in how to build your character to be stronger via skill point allocation. I guess they just deletes the RPG from the ARPG, or neutered it at least. A two handed mace or axe being a best in slot(at any point along the way, not necessarily endgame) for a caster was also really stupid. I'm not a fan of everything scaling off your weapon damage. If I'd only know all I had to do was just not equip a weapon! Anyways, didn't want to crap on D3/4 too much, so will leave it at that. Good video.
I agree with your comment. I think D3 is a fun game, but it’s more of a “hack n’ slash” action game than an rpg. I enjoy playing it from time to time, but it couldn’t keep me hooked like D2 does. In addition to what you said about skills, gearing also ends up being pretty shallow in the end game, since all the best gear shoehorns you into a specific build. Like the sets that grants a skill +10,000% damage if you use it in a specific way
@@zarfen yep. The itemization in D3 is quite bad. If you want to be optimal you have to use one of those 1000 percent damage builds. Also crit chance and crit damage percent was king. 100% I forgot how fun it is to play “casually”. If you don’t feel you need to use the best build to grind for highest GR, there so much variety in builds and playstyles too.
My main issue with D3 is that I beat it on my first run with zero deaths. I'm not a smart man, so I don't think it was skill. Just didn't really feel like a Diablo game :/
D3 doesn’t really have a real difficulty. You just set the difficulty slider to as high as you can still kill basic enemies very quickly and go. Before playing D2R and PoE I thought the difficulty slider was fine, but it’s really not that great. Makes it a good game for challenges like this because without being on torment 1 while doing the story everything just tickles you.
Holy moly you ran good on early legendary drops. Getting multipliers literally saved your run. Also never play on Expert. They miscalculated the experience and magic find multipliers and it's not worth it.

@@zarfenOne that fits into the spirit of this challenge and the D2 no gear run you did is to beat all 3 difficulties using only cursed items on a Sorceror You start naked, have to pick up and identify everything, and if you find an item that gives negative stats you have to use it. You can use spells as you normally would Not sure how it would go from scratch, since cursed items are only found on the first few levels for the most part. back in the day we used to twink these chars with the worst cursed items we had for an extra challenge😆
It would have been more interesting with vanilla Diablo 3 (there are some private servers for it): the current version is level-scaled (and I have a hunch enemies of any given level are easier than they would have been) and not intended to be played on any particular difficulty, and of course, the expansion legendaries are ridiculous as well. At some point you noted your damage increased fivefold from equipping a weapon, but well, your legos are stacking 2x and 3x multipliers, so 600% increase. But then, you were ultimately running on Torment I difficulty that increases enemy health by 819%. It was a pretty cool and interesting video nevertheless, I like your style of editing the playthrough to its relevant bits and the way you explain things.
Not sure! Are there any skills that scale off something other than your weapon? Except for this video I haven’t played much d3 in a while so I’m not too knowledgeable about the classes at the moment.
Only thorns? From the very beginning to the end? How did you do it, any tips? I was researching such a run but it seemed like thorns was so rare to find, especially early on, and also very low damage for a long time.
Diablo 3 was a much better game than people gave it credit for even at launch. There was really going to be no winning for it, nobody was going to be happy with it unless it was literally just released D2 with more polygons but i was happy with it, especially by Reaper of Souls. It's funny now with people looking back on it with the dumpster fire D4 apparently is.
I agree with both of you. Both D2 and D3 are fun games, but in different ways. Personally I prefer grinding and doing challenges in d2 with more interesting items and character building, and play d3 more casually with more fun and fluid combat and cool skill-altering uniques
A bit of accidental luck or careful strategizing on not hitting level 61 when dlc scalling kicks in. It makes game way harder and i dont think malthael would be possible past that point at least not without replacing all gear
Interesting. I remember there being several big upgrades in the gear you find/can craft after 60, but didn’t know about any big difficulty scaling. Pure luck
This just shows what a joke D3 has become. It was a great game for the first several weeks, then the nerfs of the enemies started to crank up to a point where you can just go naked despite every skill depending on weapon damage.
I found so little gear with decent thorns damage though. Am I missing some way to get thorns damage reliably on gear? All I can think of is to reroll stats at the enchanter but that seems expensive. Crafted gear often at blacksmith but rarely saw decent thorns IIRC
just goes to show how imbalanced D3 is I guess, I cant remember a time I ever thought it was well balanced. All I can say is this definitely is only possible with Reaper of Souls. The boss fights from the original 2012 release were a lot different, butcher, belial, azmodan, and others all had near 1 hit kill potential (and no way of turning the difficulty down either), getting hit by a single telegraphed attack likely ended in death. Leveling was much slower (by act 4 you were still under level 30) so that limited your spell loadouts pretty hard. Loot was busted in the completely opposite way from RoS, it was way too hard to find anything. The first legendary that ever dropped for me was in act 3 hell when I was level 59, it was a level 37 witch doctor mask... And I was a wizard... Atleast it made some decent gold on the auction house. I haven't come back to this game in forever but wow it changed. I love how quick the leveling is now, but it seems the new loot system kind of degrades the meaning of "rare" and "legendary".
I enjoy your videos, but: This character is really not a good example to use for this quest. You have to have a shield and you're using the shield initially as a weapon, so that's cheating (a lot). If you really want to go through the game with empty hands, you could have used the barb since you can run through the game with empty hands.
@@zarfen i used some legendary legs from act 5 bounties that turn 750-1000% of your health per second into a damaging aura around you as physical damage and used the general damage increasers in the game like focus+ restraint, the inarius armor and some other stuff
Oof! I wonder if that is even possible given how much items boosts your defenses. Maybe if you’re a god gamer and can dodge everything (so this challenge isn’t for me! 😅)
@@zarfen I actually tried it some time ago, but I gave up at act 2😅 You have to intentionally skip monsters to avoid getting levels and making the monsters harder. It would be possible, but I think the last boss could take an hour or more and you have to dodge everything😆
7:40 Oooof more exp = harder enemy. In leveling, a trick is to explore a map before killing anything so they are level locked to lower level and easier to kill
Thorns is kind of rare and very low damage in the early game though. I mention it a bit later in the video. But it could be an interesting challenge to do only thorns and nothing else
That's my issue with this challenge. It technically fits his goal because he states "doesn't apply to base damage". The shield does not apply to base damage, but there are skills it can scale with. There are probably other classes you could do it with, specifically a pet class or something similar. There are also a lot of skills you can't use without having a weapon equipped, so in a way it's creative. It's just bending his own rules in my opinion.
In the game and with the ruleset, it's more armor than weapon since theres no weapon damage butonly block n block chance along with other typical stats on them.
Even though I think Diablo 3 and 4 suck absolute donkey balls in most ways, I still enjoyed them the same way I enjoyed Two Worlds. At least Diablo 3 and 4 don't feel like shit to control most of the time, which is always a positive. Having said that, I enjoyed this video and would be interested in seeing more non-D2 content from you. In fact, you've inspired me to try out a few no gear runs in various games.

how can you like act 2 ? its the worst right after act 3,4 and 5
Which class is ideal for this challenge?
Not sure! Are there any skills that scale off something other than your weapon? Except for this video I haven’t played much d3 in a while so I’m not too knowledgeable about the classes at the moment.
I have about 4k total paragon, still have yet to play the campaign lol
How about no all equipment ? this will be fun .
I beat the game with only thorns damage and it was actually pretty fun
Only thorns? From the very beginning to the end? How did you do it, any tips? I was researching such a run but it seemed like thorns was so rare to find, especially early on, and also very low damage for a long time.
28:44 I believe you just need to be level 61 for death's breath to drop. I don't think you need to have beaten the campaign.
Yea you can join me on my long journey to destroy demons..... 1 thing tho drop your weapons
It’s a good arcade romp and has the best combat of the four. 2 is superior to all, but 3 is fun
Pure luck
I have thousands of hours in this game and if you had asked me I would have said this was impossible.
On normal difficulty you can beat the game without a weapon and without gear.
More important question : Can you beat Diablo3 and have fun?
go thorns
This just shows what a joke D3 has become. It was a great game for the first several weeks, then the nerfs of the enemies started to crank up to a point where you can just go naked despite every skill depending on weapon damage.
thorns damage help a lot
I found so little gear with decent thorns damage though. Am I missing some way to get thorns damage reliably on gear? All I can think of is to reroll stats at the enchanter but that seems expensive. Crafted gear often at blacksmith but rarely saw decent thorns IIRC
@@zarfen passive boost it it almost in coat, boot, leg
шипы - чип боярский.
thorns - LoD , LoN
use thors ....
just goes to show how imbalanced D3 is I guess, I cant remember a time I ever thought it was well balanced. I love how quick the leveling is now, but it seems the new loot system kind of degrades the meaning of "rare" and "legendary".
thorns
"Item duper." lmao
why is this game so baby lookin, where did the somber feel go
Last time i played campaning was 10 years ago...
Did you stop playing, or do you go straight to bounties and rifts at level 1 in free mode or whatever it’s called?
I enjoy your videos, but: This character is really not a good example to use for this quest. You have to have a shield and you're using the shield initially as a weapon, so that's cheating (a lot). If you really want to go through the game with empty hands, you could have used the barb since you can run through the game with empty hands.
i pushed GR 70 back when the necromancer released without a weapon and no +damage stats or thorns. was pretty fun
How? Admittedly I don’t know the necro well at all
@@zarfen i used some legendary legs from act 5 bounties that turn 750-1000% of your health per second into a damaging aura around you as physical damage and used the general damage increasers in the game like focus+ restraint, the inarius armor and some other stuff
now do it without any items;)
@MankeyMite I’m impressed you beat Act 1! What character/build did you use?
@@zarfen necromancer, with skeletal mage as main damage source
Your challenge was beating the game without a weapon, our challenge was having to sit through the Diablo 3 story again, haha.
😂
7:40 Oooof more exp = harder enemy. In leveling, a trick is to explore a map before killing anything so they are level locked to lower level and easier to kill
Interesting! I didn’t know it worked that way. Seems very effective but a little bit cheesy
@@zarfen it is a bit cheesy, and it is more useful in season leveling when people only care about the time it takes to reach 70
@doctort2853 ok yeah I can understand that
diablo 3 without weapons= just use thorns tbh.
Thorns is kind of rare and very low damage in the early game though. I mention it a bit later in the video.
But it could be an interesting challenge to do only thorns and nothing else
yea definetly, thorns is just probs easiest way to beat the game without weapon IF you manage to find some gear/set pieces !@@zarfen
and you ''kinda'' use weapon on thorns build cuz u need topaz on weapon...@@zarfen
True, but maybe I will do a “thorns only” instead of “no weapon” in that case if I do something like that in the future.
@@zarfen looking forward!
D3 is fun. It's just not diablo.
Hmm, interesting idea!
I do like d3 a lot but it doesn’t scratch the Diablo itch the way d2r does.
Wow, your damage is pretty bad, I would recommend equipping a weapon.
I cant get over how bad this game looks.
with very good gear I was able to clear T1 Portals with a Frenzy Barb Build
You have zero respect for that elite arcane beam ability. You stood in every single one.
You started with a weapon so you failed your own challenge before it started.
You failed, shield its a weapon
Diablo 3: The biggest disappointment in all of gaming history
What a drama queen crybaby
What fascinates me most is the fact that you called diablo "he" several times and noone from the internet outraqe squad got triggered.
cheating shield its a weapon two !!! play with no equipment
Did you realized that the shield is a weapon?
