The United States was born from an idealogical revolution, to split from a king. But what if instead it simply adopted it's own king? Here is one scenario.

George Washington: I don’t want to be depicted as a King...
Sculptors: *sURe THiNg, SiR*
They must have misheard him
Maybe George Washington said it in 1st April, so the sculptors thought it was April Fools
To be fair, Augustus **hates** being called a king, and never acts like one, and yet still commisioned a lot of sculptures, depicting him as a general or a political leader.
Kings during those times don't want to be depicted like that, barechested wearing a toga, that's the symbol of Republicanism since the Roman times.
George Washington, as a humble man, probably won't be too happy having a full-body marble of him commisioned. But he wouldn't be mad either. On the other hand, King George III would probably execute the sculptor if he made a statue of George III wearing a toga.
Before you ask, Augustus was never proclaimed king. None of the emperors did until the reign of Diocletian. It took them 300 years to realize that Rome isn't a Republic.
If it's a statue wearing an armor, then the person is depicted as a Military Leader/General.
If it wears a toga, then the person is depicted as a political leader, and is deeply rooted from Roman republicanism.
If they wore an extravagant robe, then a King.
We'd get a DLC in Assassin's Creed 3 where George Washington is a President instead.
lmfao

I think it's safe to assume if Washington had gotten the monarchy he would've spent more effort to secure an heir.
He had like several brothers.
Perhaps, if this type of monarchy was “inherited by blood.”
It’s rare, but the monarch could also name a successor. Either way the monarch would have to raise/study their successor to be sure they’re handing the crown to someone worthy.
@@MasonPerry7 It's not at all rare for monarchs to be elected. Many people don't realize this, but there were actually examples, even from the time that the Constitutional Convention was being authored. Poland Lithuania had such an elected king, and in 1573, had an electoral college consisting of 40 thousand people, and 500 thousand people had the right to vote if they wanted to travel to the place where the vote was being held, which is very nearly the same number of people who voted in the 1789 election that elected George Washington as President. The Dutch had a Statholder, which was like a president for life. The Holy Roman Empire long since had an elective monarchy. In fact, King George the Third, the very man the Americans declared independence from, was actually one of the people who had the right to elect the Holy Roman Emperor by being the elector of Hanover. The Pope is actually an elective monarch, him being the King of the City of the Vatican. Roman kings (as they were up until 507 BC) were elected, genuinely.
The English later British themselves had a Parliament who took huge amounts of power from the king, to the point where if they wanted to make the British crown elective, that probably would have been an easy thing to do, and in practice Parliament did choose the crown in important ways, like choosing the Hanoverans rather than the Stuart line, and set out specific rules of inheritance.
@@MasonPerry7 he could also just go roman and adopt somebody he liked / thought will be a good future King and tell everybody that person XY shall become the King after he dies to give him legitimacy.
Given that most other monarchs of the time were blood relatives of their predecessors, an adopted heir would have been regarded as having less legitimacy.

I'm actually pretty Sure there were some people who wanted George Washington as their king but George himself didn't want that.
The Supreme King sure there where but people just fought a king, why would they want a new one?
Benawesome BW because they weren't fighting cause they didn't like the idea of a monarchy they were fighting because the monarch mistreated them. And many of the soldiers and people who fought in the revolution were being mistreated by the new American government just like they were with the British. which is why many of them wanted George Washington to take power and become the king of America.
Washington would have been a poor choice for king because he had no biological children to succeed him. However, that made him a good choice to be president.
Why not have a different person from a different family elected as king when the old one dies

Actually...George Washington is a 17th generation descendant of King John of England of the House Plantagenet.
George Washington's great-great-grandfather was Rev. Lawrence Washington whom was the son of Margaret Butler. Margaret Butler was the descendant of Sir William Butler, whom was the descendant of Margaret Sutton. Margaret Sutton, daughter of John Suttton, son of Joyce Tiptoft, daughter of Joyce de Cherleton, whom was the daughter of Countess Eleanor de Holand, the daughter of Thomas de Holand.. Thomas de Holand is a direct descendant of Joan Plantagenet, the daughter of the Earl of Kent, whom was the son of Edward Plantagenet, King of England who was himself the grandson of King John of England.
Cheers.
Emtenn I'm related to the judge from My Cousin Vinny
Still, he would have had almost no legitimacy. The Plantagenets hadn't held any major title since the Hundred Year's War, and there are a lot of female descendants you have to go through to get to the Plantagenets.
my hubby is also descended from Joan of Acre
Batavia What would have happened if they kept the name?
Merely being of descent doesn't count for the purpose of legitimacy; for that you would need to be next in the line of succession. A large number of early settlers were younger sons of nobility, but unless the lines of the older brothers died out, neither they nor their kids could have become nobles even if they had stayed in the UK.
That first statue of Washington was meant to be a recreation of a famous statue of Cincinnatus, the legendary Roman general who was begged to come out of retirement and serve as dictator (in the ancient sense of the word). When the crisis had passed, rather than using the army to make himself King, he handed power back to the Senate and went home to his farm. Just like Washington did. When George III learned that Washington had resigned from the army and surrendered all power, he supposedly remarked, "Truly, he is the greatest man in he world."

Alexander Hamilton said we should have a king, but he meant it in the form of a democratic-elected monarch, kind of live modern Andorra, but elected internally, not by the people of France.
Yeah and everyone laughed him out of the room for it. But still having a monarch or at least some merger of democratically elected monarch wasn't that far fetched. Not just Hamilton but John Adams tried to festoon a lot of title pomp and circumstance onto the Presidency. Adams suggestions of basically making an elected monarch got him quite a bit of heat too.
I wish that son-of-a-whore had remained Loyalist, so he wouldn't be around to poison the young republic. Long live the whiskey rebels!

Ashton Todarello philly York nyc just to name a few. The capital was really just wherever congress convened. It wasn’t until hamilton and Jefferson agreed to put it in dc did it become permanent but really it’s just wherever congress is that determines the capital
Ashton Todarello congress fled to Baltimore Lancaster and York throughout the war thus they can be considered temporary capitals.

Actually there was a serious movement to make George Washington king and it almost happened if not for one man. George Washington himself declined the offer and resigned his commission. This was right at the end of the war in 1783 and BEFORE the articles of confederation. George Washington had a standing army of 25,000 men at the end of the Revolution and most of the militias were loyal to general General Washington. This is when George Washington could have been king. It was his for the taking but he resigned his commission as Commander in Chief of the continental army.

Yes. And what if the following war with France was given an army and decided to coup Adams administration. No body knows.
A constitutional monarchy can still be pretty democratic.
A democratic monarchy would just be a monarchy where the monarch is elected by the general public. Electoral monarchies have existed so the idea of an elected monarch isn't that absurd even if it has even been tried on that level. IMO the most interesting scenario as a successful Prussian scheme as the House of Hohenzollern as kings of America and Prussia would create an interesting international relationship.

I know it’s late, but let’s just say Washington accepted Kingship, George Washington was the kind of man who cared about the state of his country more than his bloodline, so I believe it would lead to him choosing his successors from one of the founders and that would probably be the trend.
Man, I love that 'we have a new king?' drawing.
Your analysis doesn’t make much sense we weren’t really rebelling against the crown we were rebelling against our lack of representation in the British parliament. We could have instituted a constitutional monarchy with a parliament system like Great Britain.
Yea this video just pretty much assumes the colonists would have outright rejected an American monarchy which isn't likely as long as it where Washington as the first King, any problems for a United Duchies(No longer called colonies) of the Kingdom of America , UDKA, would occur after the death of King George I and the fact that he did not have a son, so what could happen considering we're talking about the 13 colonies here, is an Elective Monarchy, something akin to the Holy Roman Empire, the likelihood of this nation becoming as large or as strong as the U.S.A. are far less likely to happen imo
No. Because Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet called Common Sense and in it he said that it wasn't just the King failing to to his job but the entire government was whacked and it was a huge factor in patriotism
Yeah and many American revolutionaries would have been pro Monarchy in a general sense.
Yeah it could've worked
Renlys Other Lover Yeah but the revolutionary war came to symbolize British control and who controlled the British, a King
I think that this video asks the wrong question. The US becoming a monarchy was extremely unlikely. But, monarchy isn't the only type of autocracy. George Washington basically had to figure out what the Presidency should be. Many people (looking at you Alexander Hamilton) wanted the President to serve for life, and Washington could have very easily remained President for the rest of his life. It was his choice to step down after two terms (and his created the precedent for the two term limit, which was only broken by FDR, and became a law after FDR). If George Washington became President for life, and retained control of the army, this could have set a precedent for an autocratic government similar to post-revolutionary France, Haiti or modern day Russia. Remember, Washington ran for President unopposed in both elections, what if this became the norm? What if Presidents nominated their successors instead of leaving it for the people to decide? Just think of how many revolutions lead to dictatorships. I think, for all his faults, George Washington's greatest trait was his respect for Republican virtues and his conscious effort to limit his own powers and that of his successors.
Alex Kyriacou Agreed, a President who serves for life would make way more sense than crowning a king. It would turn this entire scenario on its head

Technically, we do have monarchs. Many senior members of congress are like monarchs.
For example: King McConnell VII
I could swear there was in fact early talk of making George Washington King of the US, but he didn't want the job. And that there were Americans who were looking among European royalty as an option if they went for a constitutional monarchy.
Also, Alexander Hamilton did argue for the idea of an Elective Monarchy, but the proposal was soundly rejected.
Cain Toomey Hamilton technically suggested a president who could be impeached, a power that the British parliament did not have, and also clearly meant for the preside to be executive, not a ceremonial head of state like George III mostly was.
Do what if George Washington died in the French and Indian war...

What if the Mongols had successfully invaded Japan?
They'd have to avoid dying in a tornado. Twice.
It was definately possible and perhaps VERY possible. Divine intervention - the kamikaze winds - kept them out of Japan.
FactHub They did land on the beach that one time and fought for a bit and then they died in a typhoon but that's prolly not what she meant
I know it's like a meme that the Mongol ships were destroyed en route to Japan both times they tried to invade, but for the sake of historical accuracy, I would like to point out that both invasions, the Mongols actually landed, and were initially successful. The two typhoons in question actually destroyed the docked Mongol ships in the harbor, thus providing opportunity for Japanese ships to sneak in at night and wreck the crippled force.
"We've invaded China" the mongols said "if u do not respect us, we will invade u to" Japan replied "ok?! How about no?" So the mongols invaded Japan and died in a tornado. And the mongols invaded Japan again. Then they had a nice time fighting the Japanese and died in a tornado

Lol
George Washinton crossed the delaware river on the battle of trenton
As it stands, Washington was only able to cross with less than half his force and there were several decisions by both the British and the Hessians where going the other way could have doomed the attack.
For instance, had Rall decided to fortify Trenton then some the early American success in their assault would have been impossible. A British force in Maidenhead would have been able to reinforce the Hessians and trap the American left.
Even a tight-run American victory would have been strategically devastating, Colonial morale was already starting to collapse.
For Washington himself, it wouldn't be that big a butterfly for his boat to have suffered a mishap, resulting in him landing in the frigid water.
Meanwhile in an alternate universe: WHAT IF THE US BECAME A REPUBLIC

I think if America was a kingdom they will be like an Holly Roman Empire but in America, with an elected monarchy and the states would have alot of autonomy.
Washington would have lived longer. He died in 1799 of pneumonia when he was out in the fields. In this timeline he would have no such problem. As for his successor, maybe Hamilton?
I've been trying to work on an alternate history scenario for an American monarchy for a little while now. I'm imagining the structure as being a mix of constitutional monarchy, American federal republicanism, and feudalism, which I'm calling Jeffersonian Monarchy.
Basically, the nation has both a king (hereditary) and president (elected) as co-executives, with the executive having basically the powers of the president in our timeline, but with varying degrees of power deepening on whether or not the king and President are in agreement (easiest example is veto power. Either can veto, but if only one does, it's easier for Congress to override than irl, while if both veto its instead harder for Congress to override than irl). Congress and the supreme court are basically the same, though I've been entertaining the idea that each state has a representative who's role is specifically to represent the Prince, or the state's nobility in general.
Similar to the central government, each state (in this timeline, principality) has both a governor (elected) and a prince as co-executives. In fact, a system of constitutional aristocracy is embedded into local government on virtually every level, though how succession works for princes and lower ranking nobility is a locally determined matter. The nobility (in general) has some say in local government, receives money from the land they're attached to, and are in charge of preparing, training, managing, etc. military forces, based on the Jeffersonian concept that large, standing, centralized militaries are bad. The nobility mostly exists as a counterbalance to the types of urban elites (bankers, wealthy merchants, etc) that irl Jefferson believed would form a pseudo-aristocracy empowered by their money.
At 6:03 Alexander Hamilton says "Just you Wait"
*Hamilton fanboy sense tingles*
that's not hamilton though, hamilton is the dude sitting in that akward position whispering something to Ben Franklin
It's Aaron burr because that is one of the lines
The Suicidal Muffin
Thats not hamilton
I WISH it was Hamilton
So, what if, then, there were an alternate reality where the states are dissolved after 1789 and the American Republic, a unitary state, is created?
Didn't the Founding Fathers say to keep America under a 1-part system?
Tronald Drump No, the idea was to have a system without parties if I remember correctly.
I love the American History Museum! I immediately clicked when i saw the statue in the thumbnail 😂
Alternate history hub you are one of my favorite UA-camrs and I wish you great success

That's what I thought.
Dats y connnnnnnnnnr gwhyts hizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz pwrs lcl
All I was thinking
Hey, I have an interesting video idea that would probably have to be a few part. What if all the states were their own countries? Let's suppose that it happened around this time period. Who do you think would end up with the most land? Do you suppose Mexico would have retained control of Texas? I guess this is assuming that the states still worked together, but retained their own laws and leadership.
After the argentine war monarchy was theorized by 2 of our biggest founders, Belgrano suggested putting a native America as king, and San Martín wanted the Brother of the King of Spain.
Lucky for Argentina neither option was aproved, and instead we went on a 50 year civil war, the clear superior choice
What if forces loyal to the Shogun had won the Boshin war?
Hammarhampus

FreedomMonkeyz395 no one in the USA is aware that a shogun was once the power of japan, until u know. empire
Guy Mann What's you guys think of Kentaro Muira's Berserk, the cult-hit classic Manga????
Also, it just occurred to me. The Holy Grail Wars from Fate/Stay Night, do you guys think Grail will accept George Washington as a Epic Heroic Spirit, Yes or No???? The Servant class is pretty obvious, he will be classified as Rider. But it's Washington's noble phantasm that is unknown.
Why do you think the US's relations with the post-Revolution French Republic would go sour if Washington had appointed himself king? Napoleon did become Emperor anyway. Or, alternatively, if the French Republic had a falling out with "King George Washington", there would be resistance to having Napoleon crowned Emperor. Not only that, given the way the US system was based on Rome, why not a different title (Praetor, Consul)
George Washington: I'm not a king
People: *Treats him like one and build glorious statues of him being a king*
Washington is basically the American God Emperor
The pre-USA, the Dutch Republic, didn't even have a King...
We had a monarch and president, very weird system.
lol 1:32 "no step on snek"
On the first day, God created the dog and said:
'Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.'
The dog said: 'That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?'
So God agreed.
On the second day, God created the monkey and said:
'Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.'
The monkey said: 'Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?'
And God agreed.
On the third day, God created the cow and said:
'You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years...'
The cow said: 'That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?'
And God agreed again.
On the fourth day, God created man and said:
'Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years.'
But man said: 'Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?'
'Okay,' said God, 'You asked for it.'
So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
Life has now been explained to you.
