This movie is based on the real life of Chazz Palminteri. Who played Sonny in this movie. He grew up in the Bronx and experienced the same thing that you see here. He was the original "C". He wasn't going to be in the movie and had originally planned to play Deniro's part but Deniro talked him into it and wanted to play a part that wasn't a gangster.
I love Chazz Palminteri. I wrote this same comment about the movie on another short. I'm surprised by the amount of people that know it's based on his life. It's usually only me that knows weird things.

I know also that Deniro said that this was one of the proudest movies he ever did. He said it showed that you could be a strong Italian character and not be a mobster or crook. That's why he wanted to play the father. He was tired of being typecast all the time.
If you've seen the movie, Sonny wasn't a bad guy to C during the whole movie except this scene because of the implications that C had something to do with the bomb on Sonny's car he just borrowed that day. He actually cared for the kid, great movie.

Yeah, don't feel too bad for DeNiro! He wanted to take a break from playing punks and gangsters, and he directed this film, so he literally handpicked his role as the dad/bus driver. And for a first directing effort, it's a masterpiece. The only other film he's directed was The Good Shepherd. 13 years later. So maybe he doesn't actually like the director's chair that much, or maybe he just stays busy doing other things, but when he does direct he clearly nails the role.

Teen age boys typically look up to supposed "badasses" more than their "boring parents" until they mature enough to realize the better man works every day to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. My own son was in total awe of one of his friends older brothers, one day he was telling me what a badass this guy was because he was a part time bounty hunter and had taken a local deputies gun away from him and I told my son that being a badass was usually part time work and to look at how the guy treated his family, because I knew his family rarely had everything they needed. It made my son mad that I had criticized his "hero", but a few weeks later as I was taking a break from my yard work my son came up and sat down across from and I could sense something was wrong, so I asked him what was bothering him, he I had been right, the other guy had come home after working for several weeks on the road now towing an old broken down jalopy with a nonrunning dirt bike in the rear seat for the guy's two younger brothers, when his wife complained that he hadn't sent any money home that entire time and now comes home with two nonrunning vehicles and she had been getting money from her parents to keep their two toddlers in formula and diapers, the guy had back handed her, knocking her to the ground, my son never went back to their house again.
That's exactly when C realized that people like Sonny aren't capable of unconditional love and trust, and his Father was absolutely right about Sonny! Excellent directing and casting by Robert Deniro!
Sonny was a gangster he had that mentality of not to trust anyone, but when C told him why would I want to hurt you, you been like a father to me. I think when C said that it snapped him out of that mentality.
