      That happened to me in the 90s. Right hand crushed under two tonnes of frozen fish cartons on pallets. Amazingly nothing broke, but all the meat in my hand was pulverized and the muscle that runs my thumb burst out and was hanging in the breeze. They told my wife back then they wanted to amputate because all the nerves would die. They decided to make two big cuts to let it bleed, instead of swelling killing the nerves. A week later they operated a second time and would not let me out of hospital until I could move a finger. Six months of daily physio and my hand worked again. Not quite right and finger picking is messed up, but better than having a pirate hook.

    I, like lots of players, find Fuzz a most troublesome effect. I love it. But I find what works when I muck about alone doesn't always sit well with a band, especially with keyboards thrown into the sonic mix. I've settled on the Wampler Velvet Fuzz, which is a very particular smoothed out version. I like the Dan Drive and JHS best out of those. Great show as ever chaps, thanks for being a constant source of inspiration.

    for those worried about the cost of even some of these boutique Tonebender clones, this is a SUPER-simple circuit, and ideal for a DIY project. The circuit and components are readily available online, as are various kits. I built my own Mk II, with ZERO previous experience, in a few hours over a weekend. Great way to learn about the pedal and how it works, too.

    • @hoboroadie
      @hoboroadie 4 роки тому

      I have not much improved with fifty years of practice, and I do tend to burn stuff. I am looking for some sockets, or better yet someone more adept, to try making something with some random Ge transistors I dug out of the pile. I figured that I can bias anything some way, matching gain to position. It's going to do SOMETHING. I made a two transistor booster for a friend in 1975 that he put under the pickguard and it actually worked. I had no idea what I was doing.

    • @danielakerman8241
      @danielakerman8241 4 роки тому

      hoboroadie FYI, this can just as easily be made with silicone transistors and the change in sound quality is minimal and it will be far more reliable and predictable. JHS has a great video about that on their channel.

  • @bluesful
    @bluesful 4 роки тому +7

    One Tonebender builder who I think is great, and still building by hand in England for a very reasonable price is Williams. I think costs of these will only go up as the transistors become even more scarce, but Williams seems to be able to produce them for now at a decent price. I recently got his MkI clone and it absolutely rips. I have no affiliation, just thought it worthwhile mentioning. Every pedal on the show tonight sounded fantastic. That Black Hat just slays.

      Agree - I also have a bunch of pedals from him, and they all sound killer. Artwork can't compte with e.g. Dandrive, but they are reasonably priced and have acceptable shipping times (so far).

    • @bluesful
      @bluesful 4 роки тому +1

      @@markusm.8302 I've never been all that worried about artwork anyway :). If a pedal sounds good then I'm happy. FWIW - I think the enclosure etc.. on the Williams is fine, but I've never had the pleasure of seeing a Dandrive or other in the flesh. I live in Perth, Australia and stuff like that is basically non-existent here.

    I can see why humbucker lovers used tone benders into cranked marshals. The strat did well, but it didn’t sound natural to it. The mini fuzz and Union sounded most useable across both guitars and amps to me, very impressive

    Love the ubiquitous "Oh Maaan" out of Dan every time he's asked "Which ONE?" 🤣
    Thought Mick sounded best on the Union into the clean. It was very Mick-ish. Dan, seemed comfortable with all, but the Dan Drive into dirt seemed to stick out for Dan...possibly because his names on it & it is TPS orange.

  • @blacktoothfox677
    @blacktoothfox677 3 роки тому +5

    Real interesting how some really shine with either buckers or coils. Dan on the Union Tour-Bender was sublime - that was a Les-Paul strangulation worthy of the great Spider of superior fuzz tones, Mick Ronson himself (& I have to say, his rig - a Marshall Major, dimed, with fixed wah --- man, some of these pedals, I'm itching to hear that!). It was also awesome to hear our boy Josh is building one of THE best Fuzz pedals on the market right now. His interpretation is perhaps the best on the ear - I might have to choose the JHS for recording. But I felt the Tour-Bender was the most interesting and dynamic of the bunch.
    Though I get the chance to try and test a lot of stuff - not to the extent of you guys. This channel is crazy, I adore it. Came quite late to the party - wish I'd found you sooner.
    This is top shelf content - and to an old tone-chaser like myself, it's a gift.
    Bless you and thank you.

  • @ScottfromBaltimore
    @ScottfromBaltimore Рік тому +1

    I got a bit of inspiration and appreciate the demonstration of how to play fuzz. I dug the bend-slide up-bend - I will try to learn that trick.
    Here at home I have a Tone Machine clone and a blue Fuzzface mini. I'm finding that by comparing the two I'm discovering things about both - how the knobs work. I had just cranked the gain and set volume on unity and stopped there, but there's more to discover. The knobs do the same things, but one may do it more obviously than the other.
    Anyway, lovely video, gents! Thanks!

    I don’t know if you guys have done this before, but I’d love to see a show comparing the basic types of fuzz, ie a tone bender, a fuzz face, a muff, maybe something a bit more modern and different as well, picking kind of “achievable” examples of each, with this kind of format, humbuckers, single coils, and a dirty and clean amp. Fuzz is a bit of a maze for me. I’ve tried (and bought) several of them, but I just can’t find my happy place. Yet I always love how they sound when you guys play them.

I think he used fuzz more than people think (people say it is just amp crunch). But no fuzz demo ever sounds like Page to me. His tone did not have so much low end fart going on. Ah, where the lovely spruce comes from.
      Nah Jed, music stopped in about 1994. Or at least rock’n’roll did. Coincided with games consoles and young people staying in and wanting to get to level 9 instead of going out, getting drunk and having sex with each other.
      I’m all good with it. No need for any new music. It’s all been made. Hahahahaha

    Can't believe I missed this fuzz episode, I normally don't miss any fuzz episodes cause they almost bring out the magic in both of you. And it really shined through in this one. Many times it seemed like your " middleman" was gone.

    I have a Vox AC15C1, and I use to had a Xotic SL Drive and a Boss Blues Driver. On the Top Boost Channel, with full channel volume, and full gain on the BD-2 (easier with the SL Drive), it reproduces a fuzzy sound which I remember I enjoyed so much, a lot of fun. In a Fender Custom Deluxe Reverb '68, on the Custom Channel, with Bass on 9, Treble 6-7 and Volume at 9.5 or so, it produces a buzzy sound so cool. Is not a fuzz sound as it should be but I wanted to share these two tones. Cheers!
    P.D.: Hey, I just remembered a crazy buzzy sound from a Mini Marshall amp when the batteries are low, it also produces that buzzy sound like the Custom Channel on the CDR '68.

    I know you can’t include every pedal under the sun , but I was hoping you would get round to the Ramble FX Twin bender that was on Chris Bucks board . I remember you both liked it and warranted further investigation ? The thing for me is it has a control to vary the input impedance amongst other things , plus it has fantastic cleanup as demonstrated by Pete Thorns review . Maybe one for a future live show if you can get hold of one ?

    It took me a while to get around to watching, but wow! The last three were my faves, with the Union T&T as the winner! Dan's playing seemed to reflect that he was feeling it as well. Unreal!

    • @blacktoothfox677
      @blacktoothfox677 3 роки тому

      Yeah the Tour-Bender was my fave too - and I really liked the JHS. But yeah, if it had to be one, that Union was something special. It has to be special for me to dig so deep for a pedal - I would for this, though it looks tough to even find one right now - but I might look into the JHS - IF I deem it beats out the Keely, which looks so interesting to me. Andertons have them both in-store, so... it's gonna be a good day shopping, at some point!

    I highly recommend the Wilson Effects Fuzz, based on a Tonebender. It's got a load of really useful controls for shaping the gain and also a bass and treble cut like on a Timmy, handy if you need to tame it a little bit for your setup.

    One year ago I bought a EQD Black Ash (modded silicon Tonebnder mk3). In my opinion: the Black Ash gave me everything that I ever wanted from a Tonebender. Lots of Volume, a practical Toneknob and a high variety of sounds ranging from overdrive qualities up to wild Fuzz!

I've only ever used overdrive and distortion pedals, but this fuzz filled a gap I didn't know was missing in my pedalboard. Thanks, lads! Now let's hope they find a new batch of germanium transistors and re-release the "Sone Bender".

    Great show guys. For those who use clean pedal platform amps, it might be fun to do a show about using a fuzz into an overdrive to mimic the sound of a dirty amp. Maybe show which drives work best for that with which fuzzes. Forgive me if you have already done this. Stay healthy.

    Hi gentlemen, Thank you for such an informative and educational episode. I'm not a fuzz person and have yet to find one that I would play through let alone purchase and put on a board. That said, this episode was helpful in discovering that the units used today all sounded better (to me) through my studio monitors when the guitar was the Les Paul and the amplifier was the Victory. Of all the units you demoed, with I think a very nice variety, the Union Tube and Transistor was, to me, the least annoying, and I say this not because I am Canadian. I own both single coils and humbuckers and despite being a big fan of Teles and Strats, by your hard work, I see that I am missing nothing for those guitars, and in my case, on any guitar or amp. Your closing suggested that for non fuzz folks this episode was like pins in eyes, and while I still find no use for fuzz, your hard work makes me a more informed musician so thank you kindly. Also a belated thanks for recommending the JAM Rattler. Mine arrived last week after being backordered here in Canada and it is really glorious especially when used into my Marshall Custom Super Lead. I can now get those tones I want, without deafening volume and neighbours calling the police. Cheers!

      @@ThatPedalShow You are very kind. I would say the same in return for you fellows. Both of you are true class acts. Would you consider a comparison as was done today but for rotary pedals? I like the sound in the H9Max, but the user interface was designed by sadists and I dislike having to use a phone and bluetooth to work with a pedal.
