- We visit Macaris in London, home of the world-changing Tone Bender fuzz box to listen to some original pedals and find out how it all came to be. We’re delighted to be joined by Josh Scott of JHS Pedals.
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

We’ve been wanting to do this for ages. Dan and I have both talked with Anthony Macari in recent years about visiting the famous family music store in London’s West End to do a show on the music-changing Tone Bender pedals that originated there in 1965.
Macaris and the Tone Bender were right at the heart of the birth of fuzz as it stumbled, spluttered and eventually roared into rock and pop music. Music would never be the same again!
Fast forward a year or two and our great friend Josh Scott from JHS Pedals sent us a mail saying he’d be in London so we should hang out and maybe do something. Boom.
All the guitars, amps and pedals used are listed below.
Enjoy the episode!
MASSIVE thanks to Anthony and the team at Macaris for giving up the bottom floor of their store, and of course for letting us play with these vintage gems!

Thanks too to Josh and the JHS Pedals team for their help with this video. Please check out their awesome UA-cam shows.

A show I would watch would be having someone like Josh building simple classic circuits and explaining what each component does as it’s assembled. You know like “next we add this resistor with a value of ‘x’ and it affects the signal in this way”.
Maybe I’m the only one but I’d find it interesting.
Brian Wampler has posted quite a bit of that sort of thing. Very nicely done, I believe he might have made it interesting for folks, other than myself, who don't ordinarily geek out over Henrys and Farads and cetera.
You're definitely not the only one.
STEVEN NEWMAN is watch that
Mate, we ALL know you are not the only one who would enjoy this.
count me in for that. sounds awesome.
My only complaint is that this video wasn't 2 hours long.
and have 2-3 sequels
agreed
OdetoDan
Just watch it at half-speed.
Joe Rogan goes 3 hours with an endurance athlete. This could have been 5 hours and I would have watched it.
This is a perfect video! 😄❤️❤️
Spouse walked by and said: "You are all just little boys making rude noises."
This needs to be made into a rock and roll t shirt
I'd buy that t-shirt and, just like fuzz, only guitar players would get it
Now that’s funny well done your wife
She is really a good egg, when it comes to my music. But she knew what she was in for: on our second date i took her to a recording studio to watch me produce a demo for friend's band. That was 40 years ago...
At which point you pulled her pigtails and ran away. That'll teach her not to mock the fuzz.
If there’s ever a pedal museum, Josh needs to be the curator.
Have you seen his videos? There kind of is, and he kind of is! I agree entirely though
that's just his youtube channel, there are special exhibitions every week and everything
@@BenFentem exactly! Josh's house IS the museum.
And say "Germanium is better".
As Mr. PB would say: "JHS intro music on TPS? what is this? a crossover episode?"
Its the Timmy Jimmy Power Hour!
Dan and Mick need to take a tele-trip to Kansas and help Josh finish his song.
Oh, God Bless you! lol 🐴❤️
I've just learnt that I need a Mk 1 Tone Bender.
Keep learning. Every. Day.
Man, I bought one of the MK1 re-issues from Anthony and Ill have that pedal for the rest of my life.
Rhett Shull dude I did the same got the dam one from Anthony , Jesus they’ll have to pry it from my cold dead hands .
I got a MK 1.5 from Josh on a limited run.
Jason Channell oh man that 1.5 sounded so good
Hi Rhett, which 1 of the pedals did you get as there's a few versions?
Ndlanding it’s definitely an ‘ouch’ Mk 1 is £900
Given the current state of affairs in this world, this is exactly what we need. Four chaps sharing a common love of tonebenders and guitars in general
Amen

The best part of the video is Dan’s face every time a different version of the pedal is played. He looks like he’s going to break down and cry, out of pure, unadulterated joy,
As a sidekick Josh is one of the best things that could happen to the show.
Few months ago I was lucky to be visiting london (I´m from Argentina) and I stopped by Macari´s to check out the store and buy a patch cable and a slide. When I was going to pay I asked the salesman if I could try the powerboost and even though he knew I wouldnt buy it he said yes and gave me a guitar and amp to try it out. When I was about to play, Anthony Macari came and told me the whole story about it I was so impressed by how nice they were and it was one of my best experiences ever, I remember leaving so happy. (The sound was the best I´ve ever heard too, no clue why David Gilmour and so many used the powerboost).
I just realize I used the same guitar Josh is using in the video, that's so cool
what an amazing story
This probably sounds a bit weird, but Macari's must smell amazing!
mick was smelling it
Chris Warburton I would say it smells like guitar polish, London, and dust. So yeah, not bad.
Tone is in the nose
That "burnt dust" smell of old circuitry.
That’s not weird at all. I love that stuff. Sweet sweet smells of vintage gear.
Woke up to a new TPS episode..... today’s going to be a good day.
tgif
I’m normally not one to comment on videos, but I’m 15 minutes in and holy shiiiiii....!!!! That Mk I sounds amazing!
"My memory is a bit fuzzy"
Yes. Yes it is. GOLD! :D
When JHS and TPS combine its guaranteed to be a treat.
Look at Josh, wearing a Fuzz Face t-shirt with no respect haha
I remember Macari from my visit to London. Such a fun and talkative person, I'm sure he's like that with everyone.
Shout out to my wife Karen, it’s her Birthday today! She’s so supportive of me and my tone endeavors! Happy Friday to all. Hope everyone is keeping safe in these crazy time. This one hour video is my stress-free guilty pleasure every week. Thank you Dan & Mick for what you do!
Hope-a you are keeping safe as well, friend
And happy birthday Karen
The sound in the Mark 1 through those marshall amps. Pure divine goodness.
I swear it I came across a Mark 1 that sounded like that -no matter what it cost….I would do anything to get it….I’m not gay and I would give as many hand jobs as it took. They could call me hand job harry…..”the 1965 Tone Bender Mark 1-the pedal you would Whore yourself to get”…..has a ring to it…..that thing is the best Fng pedal I’ve ever heard.
@@flyjohnson711 what are you smoking, i had a good laugh at this comment though
@flyjohnson711 I can relate to every damn word you typed brother and agree completely👍
The world needs this right now.
Maybe my favourite episode. So interesting. History followed by demos for each. Just amazing. Thanks guys. I'd go buy a Tshirt, but I think I own them all. 😊
"I won't get in the way, I promise!"
BAMMM! THE JHS-SHOW!
THE most epic crossover episode in the history of ....well... HISTORY!!!!
Josh is kind of like ranch. Just makes everything better! What a cool dude.
I think he is more like Sambal Olek, makes everything better, with a kick!
Cool ranch
Talk about kids in a sweet shop 👍😁🎸🎸
as soon as i see a video with Josh Heath Scott in it i click on it asap! Josh is the best !
We are all quarantined so I hope this gets a million views coz it’s such a great episode!!
I can not put to words how much joy this episode is bringing in the midst of such terrible circumstances
A pure gem. Image a world only with regular, like calbe, TV. NONE of that would ever be produced or see the light. There is a lot of good stuff out there! Thx.
Much needed during these strange times.
End of the world is surprisingly boring as hell though. 😏
I always heard that there's a Chinese curse that translates to:
"May you live in interesting times." 🏥
David D “this is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper”. T.S. Eliot.
A Tremendous 58'27" worth of video awesomee! TPS plus Josh and Anthony M. ! That MK 1 and P90's what a sound, noise, sound :) ! and cleans your ears at same time !!! Stay healthy and safe everyone.
I've been waiting like 5 years for this episode
Great, thanks guys, now I want a £900 mk1 tonebender...
That Mark I was by far the best sound I heard the whole video.
Love how the JHS intro plays over the Pedal show
I love how Mick has his birthday t-shirt on in the past.
Shh, you're not supposed to notice that!!
I feel like lots of ppl talk abt how amazing lp tone was especially back in the 60s when it was either cranked amps with tone benders or range masters.. but the strat w fuzz is not talked abt enough. Easily on par w that beano sound or the green, beck, and page tones. I think lps are so legendary bc of their sound straight in, theyre so full they dont need to add anything but maybe a transparent boost to add just that little bit more gain sometimes. The strat was made for pedals and can channel all the gain through its pickups and needs them imo.
I can't believe I watched all four of you discuss Tonebenders for an hour !?......man was it good !.............tx
18:06 - "Yup smells fuzzy"
20:51 - The look on Dan's face - they all look stoned and are just passing the joint around waiting their turn
The entertainment value is off the charts on this one.
What a fabulous fuzzliciously delectable aural journey, history lesson and downright magical moment. Thanks guys. Respect, Macari's.
The opening Tele licks on that Mark I is the equivalent holy grail tone for fuzz that the Klon
Centaur is for transparent overdrive! It just sings,...it rings,...it sputters,...it is totally fuzzolicious! It’s the clip’s chips!
Love it. The next step would be to get Stuart Castledine, Steve William Pigdog and David Maine on the show.
Dominic Jacobs great idea !
And Steve Giles. Best MKII I have ever heard.
When the corona madness is over please come to the states and do a show with Josh at JHS headquarters!!! Sovtek MiG 50 edition!!
Excellent, excellent show, guys. I'm late to this particular party, but so what. Internet.
That first version was so good. Blew the others away imo.
I’m going to be watching this over and over again! Cheers guys. So glad that the Tonebender is reclaiming it’s no1 status in the fuzz world after all these years! Pioneering and big boxes rule!
Mick smelling the 1.5 @ 18:05 is so human it’s epic.
I made a bit of a pilgrimage to Macaris last year and tried them all... the MkIIIs etc were great ... but then I played the Mk1 and I felt like I had discovered the most amazing thing ever... unfortunately, I choked... I may never forgive myself.
These tones... I love fuzz!
Anyone else find themselves uncontrollably yelling “yeah baby!” every time the volume gets rolled on?
I'm watching this and hoping against hope that at the end, we have an announcement of a JHS/Solasound collaboration on an "every Tone Bender in one pedal" thing like the Muffaleta.
:O
The Bendorama?
@@MattVogt2 The Macarina
Yes please yes please yes please yes please yes please yes please yes please yes 😃
I've been hoping for that...but with all the different transistors and stuff I'm not sure if it'd be possible - would it...??? If so, I'm gonna get one...
You could rule the world with the ToneBender 1
A FIELD TRIP.. !! God bless you guys. Am only thru the first 2 minutes and smiling ear to ear. Happy quarantining everyone.
Great episode! Love Josh!
Love that Mk I. Something about it that stands out from all the others. Nasty goodness.
Me: Watches episode, goes digging into pedal box for Magnetic Effects Solar Bender.... realises sold it for a handful of beans before Christmas...hangs head in remorse, recriminations and self-loathing to follow...Consoles self with JHS Pollinator acquired in trade last week. Not the same but still fuzzy glory. Fantastic episode.
Holy Shyte.... those P-90's growl !!
Best effing pedals ever made!!
Great to see the three kids out playing. Loving every minute of it. Be well!!
I was anticipating the ending to be like “here’s a Tonebender for you, for you and for you!” but it didn’t happen. Hope Mick buys that Les Paul.
That Les with the mk1 was magic! I shed a tear
Loved the JHS vlog intro music!
Best TPS ever!
Possibly the best ever episode. Tonal gold. The people, the history, the nerdery, the sounds. And I don't even get fuzz pedals!... So where do I buy one of these mk4 things?
Thats what it is, not really a fuzz. a bunch germanium and no clipping, its just a fuzzface with other values, its really amazing how the same two circuits make these icons. they probably didnt understand that 10 components can do what it does. did the TB 1---1,5---2 and 3! they all fit and dont ever feel like mkiii is "better" than the 1. its apples n oranges and i love them!
The Bender's are def a whole rabbit hole, which leave(more common renditions of) the Fuzz Face and Muff in the dust. When I first really began experiencing them more than a decade ago, my fundamental idea of what was possible tone and sound wise was entirely different, so where once I thought the Pi with Tone Wicker, or the initial Soul Bender, were big steps up, exposure to the early Bender's and the Buzzaround blew those away.
But clearly, also, how carefully even those simple Fuzz Face circuits are handled is significant; there's a huge difference between the Dunlop, or Fulltone, and the Analogman (for ex.) takes on essentially the same idea.Fuzz is ,- and clearly began as,- an effect that benefits from "boutique", personal treatment.Currently, there are even some very interesting refinements being made to the Muff that expand upon some of it's well recognized limitations.
It's a happy day for those with a thing for sweet dissonances.
That was really interesting. I.V is my favourite
DAN YOUR SONG IS A BANGER
Ah, cheers mate
Amazing episode. Felt like the best field trip ever. Really love how you guys show the versatility of fuzz. Like a wise man said, “All you need is fuzz. Fuzz is all you need.”
Used to love their store in Charing Cross Road (just a few yards from the Selmer emporium). I dunno whether I used to deal with Anthony's
Father or Uncle - he was quite tall - in the sixties from 1967 onwards. Always had an amazing and colourful window! Best, Pete.
would have been my Dad - the height thing jumped a generation :)
@@macaris_official There was always tons of interesting stuff there. One time I saw a horn you could link to a guitar amp. Yes, it was a real brass horn about the length of a trombone connected to a driver which inturn was screwed to a mic stand. Never saw anything like itanywhere else! They used to line up their pedals along the window - real attention grabbers. Did you know the funny little store in Earlham Street (down by the Seven Dials? That was where Clapton used to get his Banjo strings from for his Les Paul - only for the high E. He just moved a light set down one...
@@ptrisonic so cool - you know you are jogging my memory on that horn thing- I KNOW I've heard something about it before !! Thanks for thinking of us and getting in touch - best- Ant
Josh is so wholesome I would take him on any road trip.
I just bought a colorsound fuzz, third run, from Anthony this afternoon. It is THE sound you want. Grab one while they have them, I dare you to not smile when you hear it plugged in. EPIC!
I love these That Pedal Show on Tour video's! More of these please.
That first Tone Bender sounds amazing!!!
The MkI sounded other-worldly!
I love this! I love that this platform provides you guys with all the creative freedom to do what you want and collaborate with other like minded individuals without having to deal with corporate BS. Bravo!
Thank you Timothy. That that comes across means a great deal to me. Mick here. Thank you!
Bitter sweet watching this video. I haven’t been to Macari‘ s in twenty years and was really looking forward to visiting at the end of this month.
But then the world exploded. 🙁
Straight in as one of the top 10 shows you've ever done. Brilliant, so many thanks.
Brilliant! I've got to say, the Mk 1 blew me away! For me, they nailed it first time.
My Mk1 Tone Bender from Maccaris landed on my doorstep the day before you filmed this . I got number 39 built by David Main and I’ve not yet stopped grinning .. absolutely incredible... no, that don’t even sum it up ... it’s just fxxxxxxk
I bet you those are all on back-order by now. I still can't afford to worry about it. Next year!🎸
I’m unsure I think most were pre ordered but occasionally someone put deposit and dropped out , that’s how I got mine , I couldn’t afford it , sold a 60s gretsch to get it ... but fuck you only need one guitar but more than one pedal.. no regrets , by far the most beautiful pedal I’ve ever had . It’s a Till death do us part affair
15:20 ...?? Everyone at a loss for words?? Lol wow this is amazing
It's always good when y'all have guests that aren't there just to plug something. It definitely feels more genuine and with light spirited musicians like Josh. So enjoyable.
You know a story is going to be good when it begins with someone called "The Clock-Eyed Lady".
Watching Josh with the Fuzz Buzz... LOL The way he touches it is so funny!
Fun Show…Thanks Guys
4:00 “Prefab Sprout Dressing Room” sign in the background. How cool!
Josh is so good, his channel is surely the second best guitar pedal channel on UA-cam?
I work a few minutes walk from Macari's - had a play of the rosewood Tele you can see in the window. Utterly glorious guitar and shop.
Best content ever
great great show 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Smacking the Marshall to stop it from crackling... at work we’d call the Percussive Maintenance.
Cheers chaps, most excellent episode, intriguing stuff indeed. That Mk1 ...... just righteous. :)
Hoof! Great to see the rivolta put through its paces. Killer!
Gah... what a great video. I have a D*A*M Sola Limited Run Copper Tone Bender Mk 1.5 that I bought from Macaris in 2015 (#18) and it is fantastic... a 'forever pedal'.
ill be expecting a JHS “Crispy Velcro” soon ;)
What animal would you put on it?
JHS Firefly, now discontinued, but a tone bender with a bias control. Check it out!
Amazing! I was in Macaris a few days after you filmed this and they were all talking about you guys and then my wife and I went to the Peter Green Celebration gig. That was a good day........ hope you guys are well and will be able to keep the content coming in these weird and difficult times
I Love the sound of Fuzz in the morning.
Great job getting Andy along for this one.
So cool...I actually got a MkII from Anthony....awesome pedal of course...super interesting to hear the history of it!
I just got a Sola Sound BUM Fuzz from Macari’s 4 months ago. I love mine. These Tone Benders just have giant tones. Thanks for the video, this is fun!
Mick fuzz sniffing the 1.5!!!! 😂😂 funny thing is I'd most probably do the same. 😂 brilliant guys loving this.
aaaah ! when 3 legends meet . . . magic !
