Your Fight-Flight-Freeze response to Stress

  • When we are aroused by actual or perceived threat (including chronic stress or past trauma), our sympathetic nervous system (or our flight-flight response) is activated to protect us. However, if the perceived danger is too high and the chance of safety is very low, then the dorsal branch of the vagus nerve is activated, leading to a low arousal state, depression and, at its extreme, a freeze or fall response, where we actually faint or dissociate.
    If someone has been in pain for a long time and there’s associated stress, trauma, anxiety or depression, it's likely their system is dominated by the sympathetic or the dorsal vagus nerve. And once this fight or flight reaction occurs, it takes much longer for the body to come back into the pre-fight or flight state.
