  • A great comment by Don leads to a discussion on how taking supplements can lead to less hyperarousal. And why this can become a problem.

Last night i woke with physical symptoms of anxiety and I experimented with staying in bed rather than getting out (as i was so tired). Sometimes I take a little passionflower at night if i feel very awake and sometimes it can work, sometimes it doesn't. Last night i tried something that a massage therapist told me to do which was to tell myself that everything was ok, but while doing so, to hug myself and stroke myself (i.e. my arms) almost like soothing a child back to sleep - I felt so hyper that I am surprised that it worked, but it actually did, it calmed me and I went back to sleep. It was like a really nice self-compassion exercise and it was strangely soothing.

      Hi Nicki,
It’s so nice you found relief and you know, it can be a bit tricky when we think something made us calm. We teach a lot here about delegation, that when we think “oh nice, hugging myself will take care of my anxiety” - this leads us to an effortless place where we no longer try to control our emotions, and then we find peace of mind, the magic is in the delegation! And this is why it can be confusing that something “works” sometimes or “stops working” 😊

This is a weird one Daniel, I wonder if you've encountered this...
I had insomnia but reading your book and following your advice I've been doing great now for at least a month.
However, I have one bad night a week maybe. I'll have a bad night, sleep great for four or five nights, then have a bad night due to hyperarousal.
During the week my anxiety grows and grows until I have a bad night until I basically have to reteach myself your teachings so far. Rinse and repeat.
I'm absolutely delighted at my progress thanks to the teachings BTW, I'm back at the gym etc. I know it's a speedbump but it's odd to me.

Hi! So so glad to read this, well done living a free life again 🙂!
What you share here, super common and we call it success regress. Search here and you’ll find a video on it, I think it’s in the This is Natto playlist.

Thanks Daniel for that episode it was fantastic.I Get everything you say about the thought process it’s not the magnesium that made me sleep it was the thought the magnesium made me sleep. Its like saying some one gave you a sugar pill and said it was magnesium you would still sleep better as it’s the thought your were still taking magnesium. That makes a lot of sense as I’ve tried so many different supplements over the months, once you have a bad night of sleep you think oh no I need to research something else as this supplement isn’t working anymore, the big one Melatonin! but no it’s all in the thought process Great! I love the model by the way it’s a great way of training your brain to think differently, will study it more. Thanks again Daniel for all you time and effort much appreciated . Cheers Don.

Donald Stokes- Okay, now how is it you’re writing my comments??😃 I’ve learned the SAME things you have, about sleep, hyperarousal, and if I take (insert supplement name), I will/won’t sleep. Example: I deeply dislike drugs, however I had an ER visit from a 2 week stint of 0 sleep and was hallucinating. Husband takes me to hospital, they give me Valium!! I didn’t sleep even an hour...after VALIUM. That’s how hyperaroused my brain was. Fast forward 6 months, I look into the cognitive aspects of insomnia and practice an attitude of “Oh well, I can’t make myself sleep, so I’ll just let everything go,even the cbt for a little while, lie down and read, and whatever happens, happens”. There were a few expletives in there as well. 😉Things have steadily improved since that day. I’m learning how to take the pressure/expectation/anxiety off of my desperate desire for sleep, and, in so doing, have acquired more and BETTER sleep than I’ve had in 14 months.😎 Great channel-Great community.

Donald Stokes. - Wishing you the best as well.🙏 Daniel’s channel is really what helped me finally accept I have the ability to sleep. I figured I was unique, a hopeless case, but after watching tons of his videos I realized I too have hyperarousal keeping me awake. I thought all the deep breathing exercises was supposed to help!?!? Turns out that it’s exactly what was failing my brain’s ability to sleep.😖To think of the wasted time and exhaustion! But, we learn and grow and it’s all okay. I hope my experience can assist another person in distress. Be well 🙏

Hi Daniel, just recently discovered your teachings and I’m deeply inspired to learn more and apply the wisdom that you’re offering. This video left me just a bit apprehensive, and I’m curious if you have any feedback… are you saying that essentially all supplements/pharmaceuticals focused on sleep-aide are placebos? That is hard for me to understand, as it seems clear that there are plenty of substances/molecules/chemicals that do in fact directly yield a physiological reaction of drowsiness… even just chamomile tea! I gave my young daughter some chamomile tea before dinner the other day, and she fell asleep on the couch within 30 minutes, totally unprecedented for her, and she certainly didn’t have any active thoughts associating that tea with making her sleepy. I certainly understand the value of decoupling attachments to ingesting supplements from sleep outcomes, but do you truly not believe there are some things that are valuable for amplifying one’s sleep drive, that can be helpful for the process of obtaining good sleep? It seems to me like that approach could in fact still work beautifully with your overall philosophy, especially if you remain NATTO of the substance you’re taking? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Daniel! When you say do something you enjoy does that include watching a tv show? I have started to do this every night now and I feel like it is something that I believe helps me get sleepy. So has this thing that I enjoy at night now become a sleep effort? Maybe I should stop doing it? Kind of confusing to me!

HI Alyssa, you're right... sometimes we don't really know our intent. Watching tv can be really nice, I do this every night with my wife. Check Insomnia insight 491, it's on this very topic.

Hi Daniel. Question on hyperarousal. Mine keeps me up and I get maybe an hour or less some nights. I know you’ll say “do nothing” about it but I feel it’s just making my daily/nightly fear response worse and it’s just continuing on and on. Do I just lay there and do nothing about it?

    • @thesleepcoachschool8192
      @thesleepcoachschool8192  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Sam,
I would say this, trying to make it go away is what makes it stay. So if we say “should I just lay there?” then there’s an assumption in the question that there is a better/worse thing to do, that there is some way that we can control our emotions… which is very natural to wonder of course. But it’s really when we see that there’s nothing we can do to have control, and that trying to lower hyperarousal makes it higher…. That’s when you see the flip side.
Anything we do without any intent of lowering hyperarousal, anything we do that is meaningful or fun and shows that there’s much value even with hyperarousal… this leads to more and more peace.

Did your sleep get better? I also have hyperarousal and having 0-1 hr of sleep a night (except for 4-5 hrs last night!). It's so hard! I try to remember to the great Dr. Claire Weekes approach to anxiety: accept, float (or surrender) and let time pass.

@@beaniez8854 hi beanie z. Sleep is sporadic. I haven’t really moved forward unfortunately. Some nights 6 hours some none. No rhyme or reason. I’m still trying to learn and understand what the success stories understand that I don’t. Yes I love Claire weekes so I am trying to re read her and understand but not use it as control tool. But that in itself confuses me.
