@@mockeyfan4244 You can! But you need to add one more cup of sugar to it when you reheat it, to make up for the sugar that was used to make the crystals, otherwise, it won't be diluted enough. You can also use the liquid in other things like as a base for drinks, it is essentially a simple syrup.
Hi Matt, enjoyed the video. Will be making with my son. One question: for the 3 cup sugar/1 cup water mixture, how much flavoring should I add? I’m using LorAnn super strength flavors. I tried to scroll through the comments to see if this had been asked before, but didn’t see that it had. Thanks so much!
Awesome! Glad you liked the video and are going to try it out. I recommend using 1/2 to 1 tsp of flavoring to start. Once the liquid cools down a bit and before you pour it into the mason jar, glass, cup etc. You can take a spoon and taste a bit of it. If it isn't strong enough add another 1/4 tsp or so. That super strength stuff goes a long way.
Thanks!! Any hard candy flavoring will work. They can be found on Amazon, cake decorating stores will probably have them, Walmart may have them. Here is an example on Amazon amzn.to/3IKpsG6
hi matt thank you so much for this video! i was wondering, can you put more than one skewer in the sugar solution? or will affect the growth of the candy?
hi there! You are very welcome. It depends on how large of a container you use. If you use like a large pot you can space them out, but in the jars or glasses like I showed in the video, then no, that is too close together. :) Good luck, let me know how it turns out.
Hello Matt, thanks for sharing. I do have a question, can I insert more than one stick in same jar at the same time? Secondly, can I reuse the colored sugar mix after 7 days of forming the first rock candy?
Hi there, no you can't, they will grow together and stick, unless the jar is really wide and the sticks are at least 2 inches apart. You can reused the sugar liquid, however you will need to heat it in again and add an additional cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew, because what is leftover isn't very concentrated. If that makes sense?
Very neat thank you!!! I laughed hysterically when you said 5-7 "DAYS". Lol, I just knew you were going to say minutes or hours even. 🤣 I will still make. But so glad I watched in its entirety first.
Thank you! Yeah unfortunately you can't rush the science of this. It just takes a long time for the crystals to grow properly. :) Glad you watched the whole thing!
For the ones that stick to the jar and cannot come out... take them and put them into a hot water bath (hot tap water) with the water coming up to about an inch from the top and in about 5 minutes they will slide right out. Yes you will have a huge jar shaped candy but you can chip it down to a smaller size.
Hello! It can, but you will need to reheat it and add 1 additional cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew on the stick, otherwise it won't be concentrated enough.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Yeah it was supposed to be a experiment, but my mom said no because she didnt want to waste sugar -_- and then get sick for eating too much sugar :{
You are very welcome! So glad your experiment worked! These types of food science projects/recipes don't always turn out correctly the first time, but happy you were successful.
You can but will need to reheat it with an additional cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew on the sticks, otherwise it won't be concentrated enough.
Hi. I remember Rock Candy from my childhood-in about 1955. Since then I did not see it around. Now I am over 70 y.o. and by a chance I was shopping in Chinese grocery and they had Rock Candy. I bought it and found, that the sugar is a lot less sweet then if you just take in the crystal form from grocery. And I am wondering if the change it the sweetness is caused by it's crystaline form or if the Chinese add something to the sugar to make it crystalize better or faster and as a secondary effect the sugar is less sweet.
Hi, while you can, you need to reheat the liquid and add another cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew on the stick. It entirely depends on the container, the ones I show in this video, you can only do one, if you try and do two they will just grow together and be stuck together, there needs to be plenty of room around them.
You are so awesome. Thanks you for sharing this video. Ready made is so expensive and I make a lot of teats your video has saved me a lot of money. 2 questions..... Can I add white food coloring to make my colors pop more and can white only be used?
You would need to reheat the leftover liquid and add about another cup of sugar to make up for the sugar loss, otherwise it won't be concentrated enough.
You can heat it back up and add another cup of sugar and make more rock candy, other than that, not much. Since it has been sitting so long at room temp, I don't recommend drinking it, or using it in drinks. But you are certainly welcome to try that.
Yo mate,I was planning to made this but I have a question tho, after we put them in the cups or jars do we put them into a fridge? Or out of the fridge?
no sorry, I don't think that will work, but you can always experiment and try it for yourself. But it really needs to be only pure sugar water or a flavored extract.
@@alaablue3638 Let the liquid cool down a bit more, it is probably still too warm when you put the stick in. And make sure the sugar on the stick is completely dry.
Hello, you are welcome! :) No sorry, if you put two sticks in the jar they will grow together into one larger one, haha. Great question. :) If you made more sugar solution you could use a wider container like a pot and put a few in it spread apart like 3 inches apart. But only one in the type of jar I used in the video (mason jar)
@@shonahendley2298 You are welcome! You can store them at room temperature for several days. If you are giving them away, I recommend buying little treat bags to wrap them with. Or put individual sandwich bags or something over them.
So what if it starts crystallizing on the bottom of the jar? Do I use the double boiler method? Do I just pour it out and add another cup of sugar? I make a lot of this stuff and it feels like such a waste at the end of each trial when I'm going to reuse the same flavoring.
@@kjordan5782 That can happen especially with a smaller glass or jar. If you follow the written recipe there are trouble shooting tips, more information then found in this video. www.inthekitchenwithmatt.com/homemade-rock-candy
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I appreciate the link and I read through it and didn't see anything about reclaiming or reusing the syrup besides running a little hot water to release the stick if it gets stuck at the bottom of the jar. In the future I will use bigger jars if that's the case but I'm only interested in finding ways to recycle the syrup after the 5-day wait or 14-day wait. I guess I will try to do the double boiler method and having hot water in a pot and then putting my mason jar within it and hopefully that will break loose the crystals that form at the bottom of the glass. Thank you for your help and I appreciate your time.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt also this would be a great idea for some content to drop to show people how to recycle the syrup. Hell I'd subscribe and like for that!
Thank you! you can reuse the liquid but need to add an additional cup of sugar when reheating it to make up for the sugar that was grown on the stick. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt ty so much for replying back so fast. Would i need to add more flavoring or should it be just fine and do you think it would work with 2 sticks at the same time if you gave them enough room
@@kevinf4946 You are welcome! You probably won't need additional flavoring. If there is enough room 2 sticks will work but it would need to be a much wider container. For experimenting it is better to use those smaller cups like I showed in the video, then you can make about 4 candies from one batch as opposed to 1 large one. But two sticks in a mason jar won't work, they will just grow together.
@@kevinf4946 You are welcome! It is definitely more of a food science experiment than an exact recipe that will work the same way every single time. But super fun to play with especially when you see the crystals grow. Good luck and have fun!
It works quite well, as long as the syrup isn't too hot, so just let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes before pouring it into the cups. Fun idea for science class! I recommend giving it a try on your own first, it can be a little finicky. I will always remember my high school Chemistry class where we made ice cream with. Food science is so fun!
Matt I let the liquid cool for too long and when I put the sticks in it was like slimy and a bit solid if that makes sense. do u think it could still work
Hello, you can use the liquid again, but you will need to heat it up again, and add one more cup of sugar, to make up for the sugar that was used to created the rock candy.
You are welcome!! I am not sure, but I assume a dryer environment works better than one with lots of humidity, but I don't know for sure. It grows great here in Phoenix, AZ which is hot and dry climate.
mmm good question, I have never tried that, so I can't say. I am guessing the disturbance might cause a problem as you suggested. But a fun experiment to try for sure!
Hi Matt, I'm atteping this recipe however, when I put my sugar stick with the seed crystals into the jar with my sugar solution it appears that most if not all of the sugar dissolves/falls off my stick. Wondering if that should happen. I waited until my sugar solution was essentially cold (cooled for over 20 minutes), and still the sugar falls right off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hello! You still may have some sugar crystals on there, that you can see. I would just leave the stick in there and see if crystals start to grow on it, you should see them after a day or two.

@@inthekitchenwithmatt Oh that's okay. Thank you
@@alaablue3638 You are welcome!
@@inthekitchenwithmatt So i tried it out but the sugar on the stick keeps falling into the liquid. May i ask why does it fall off?
@@alaablue3638 Let the liquid cool down a bit more, it is probably still too warm when you put the stick in. And make sure the sugar on the stick is completely dry.
Hi thx for the tutorial. This might be a silly question but can u put more then 1 stick in the jar? Trying to make these in bulk😏 thx in advance
@@inthekitchenwithmatt thank you so much for responding. Also 1 more thing. How long will they last once made & How to store?
@@shonahendley2298 You are welcome! You can store them at room temperature for several days. If you are giving them away, I recommend buying little treat bags to wrap them with. Or put individual sandwich bags or something over them.
Wow it awesome great upload
Thank you!
Thanks so much this really helped
You are very welcome! :) Glad it was helpful.
Very cool! Awesome! I love it!!
Thank you!
Can you reuse the candy syrup after the first batch of candy is done or do you have to make fresh every time?
You can reheat it, but you need to add another cup of sugar to it, to replace the sugar that grew on the stick.
Hey Matt love the video. What can you do with the extra liquid after its done. Can you reuse it to make more or will it not work the same.
Thank you! you can reuse the liquid but need to add an additional cup of sugar when reheating it to make up for the sugar that was grown on the stick.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt awesome ty again for taking your time and replying. I will just experiment around with the 2 stick idea lol
@@kevinf4946 You are welcome! It is definitely more of a food science experiment than an exact recipe that will work the same way every single time. But super fun to play with especially when you see the crystals grow. Good luck and have fun!
How did the plastic cups handle the heat from the sugar syrup? Want to do rock candy for a lab for my 6th grade science class.
Matt I let the liquid cool for too long and when I put the sticks in it was like slimy and a bit solid if that makes sense. do u think it could still work
Just reheat it. :)
I Hope you Will answer Bcs Its old video but after ill do the Crystal can i use the liqid one more time?
Hello, you can use the liquid again, but you will need to heat it up again, and add one more cup of sugar, to make up for the sugar that was used to created the rock candy.
Hey Matt! Thanks, I needed this for my Science Project. (In Which Environment Does Rock Candy Grow Best?)
You are welcome!! I am not sure, but I assume a dryer environment works better than one with lots of humidity, but I don't know for sure. It grows great here in Phoenix, AZ which is hot and dry climate.
Can you change the jars they are in after 3 days or so and get multiple colors on them, or does the disturbance cause a problem?
mmm good question, I have never tried that, so I can't say. I am guessing the disturbance might cause a problem as you suggested. But a fun experiment to try for sure!
Thanks I need this for my project
You are welcome! Good luck on your project!
Its almost summer ima do this!
Have fun!
