So glad you reacted to this beautiful classic love song! I just knew you were going to really love it!❤ This song helped re-ignite Kenny's career. Lionel flew to Las Vegas to pitch the song to Kenny. It was a song he had pitched to The Commodores, but they turned it down. It was titled Baby. However, Kenny was telling Lionel about this wonderful lady in his life. So when Kenny asked what the name of the song was, Lionel quickly changed the name to Lady. And the rest is history. They also became best friends. While Lionel's house was being built, Kenny and his wife invited Lionel and his wife to live in their guest house. Lionel has written many other songs that you'll like. Songs like Three Times a Lady, Still, Just to Be Close to You, and Truly just to name a few. Best wishes!

My boyfriend (now my husband) took me to a concert with Kenny Rogers two years after this song came out. Also, in person, Kenny’s voice was off the charts. I don’t think back then they could truly capture the quality of his voice.

This live version is the only one to listen to. The recording is flat in comparison and wouldn't elicit the same reaction. So glad you did the live version 😘
The original name of the song was Baby, because The Commodores (with Richie) already had a song named Lady (you pick me up) so you do not release two songs with the same name. Then Kenny got Lionel to produce his album, and he gave him a song named "Going back to Alabama". The Kenny was telling him he had a new Lady in his life, so Lionel reworked the song a bit and named it Lady. The rest is history as they say.

This is absolutely beautiful, yet a performance I love even better is him singing it with Lionel Richie in Las Vegas in 2018 I believe. Only a couple years before he passed. To witness the love between those two men is a beautiful thing to see & I'll be Andre finds a few tears. Kenny tells how their friendship began 30years before, when Lonel wrote the song for him. Cute story & moving performance. Another beautiful song by Kenny would be perfect for you two. It is called 'Through the years' & is for longtime, loving partners.

Lionel wrote the song for his own band, The Commodores, but the guys declined so Lionel thought of his friend Kenny's voice would be perfect and called Kenny to offer it and even helped produce the recording.

I've seen videos where both Kenny and Lionel talk about how he wrote it.
Kenny hired him to write this style of song for him for his album. Lionel said he had this song, but was rejected by his group the Commodores. He played it on the piano, but he only had the opening melody and the word "Lady". Lol
And they claimed that he wrote half of it while he was sitting on the toilet.
