You explained this 1000x better than my BMW service advisor did. Now I feel much better that I didn’t attempt to do this job myself. I would have failed royally. Thank you!
Haha no problem man. Yeah it's a terrible job.
How much did it cost?
@caffey500 I’m not too sure on cost but I’m guessing somewhere around 2000 dollars
Thank you for this video!! Saved me a lot of time staring at this wondering where to start haha (GM tech here) just trying to figure out a way to hang the motor since it seems they changed tow hook size, the one in the vehicle won't work. But I'll figure something out. Thanks again for posting this!!
No problem man. Let me know if I can do anything else to help out
@adamv481 - What did you use instead of the tow hook?
Wow. 13hrs. So crazy these BMW’s.
I know! Way too involved for a oil pan gasket job
For those wondering what other options you have for supporting the engine, since the fenders are plastic-on-plastic, you can support the engine from the transmission bell housing using a screw jack, or even a bottle jack with a wide base, and use some type of rubber blocks (or cut some thick rubber from really dense farm rubber mats, stacked together, to support the engine once you drop the subframe. Worked for me, but if you're working on jack stands and need to get that heavy and awkward sub frame back into place, use two slim hydraulic lifts, one in the front and the other back, to position it and raise it until you can get it into place. Also, if possible, support the heavy and awkward power steering system from the stop with a chain because repositioning it is a PITA.
Thank you!!
Very helpful. Very typical BMW job.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful
My local BMW dealership wants $2500 to replace the oil pan gasket. Now I see why...
Nice! Thank you
Thanks for the video and explantation! Does this apply to 2014 X6 as well? My guess is yes...
Pretty much the same job, thanks!
How much is the labor for this, my x5 has oil pan leak
What about the pipes from intercooler to turbo and intercooler to charge pipe?
did you have to remove them? Because there will be some slight engine movements while intercooler is not moving. I am afraid it can break intercoller hose or crack the pipe
Yeah, I try not to move the engine much more than I need too while doing this job
How much did you charge for this? I think I need the same service
Good video but torque specs and all that stuff would be nice ... or I can’t find the part two ,
Next time ill try to add torque specs to the video, thanks for the advice.
Is everything the same except for the front drive axles on an sDrive?
Yeah without the front diff bolted to the pan and the front axles going through it its a lot nicer job
Sdrive and Xdrive all same procedure ?
The xdrive is a bigger job. Front differential and front axles need to be removed
Where did you put the mounts for the top side engine support? My X5 s35 has plastic fenders on the side
I can’t remember how I do that exactly, sometimes I will support it from the bottom with screw jack
@@EuropeanAutoRepair Ok, I'm faced with an issue, the tow hook on my wife's s35i 2016 X5 doesn't fit in the hole meant to attach an engine support bracket, so I guess I'll find a small screw jack, or pneumatic piston jack, to help support, would you say either of those options would suffice?
@@greathairengineer yeah either one of those would support the weight I’d say, are you performing this job on a 2 post hoist?
@@EuropeanAutoRepair yeah, it's a two post top hoist, got it from Amazon, but my fenders are plasticz sadly. So without finding a tow hook that'll fit the hole in the cylinder head to support it, I have limited options, even getting an engine crane would still be a challenge as I need to source that tow hook that'll fit.
I could be wrong but this might be the tow hook you need www.ebay.com/itm/114828394295?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=czr4P2HTRBi&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=8ua412dftay&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
How did you get out the diff, and did you have to drain it?
You can remove the front axles and the drive shaft along with the 4 bolts that hold it to the oil pan and just grab it right out. If you don't tilt it you won't loose much fluid if any
My guess bmw x6M would be the same cause dealership want $3800 from me
Wow that's a lot, i think that job may even be more work.
Yeah, I got a similar quote from my BMW dealership. I have a 2012 X5 and they quoted me $3,680 for this.
Dang. I got quoted 5,580 for this. I think they might be trying to overcharge me but idek
That's a bit too much
