I have a different perspective. Although English has only 26 letters, it needs to have one distinctive word to describe a thing or concept. When a new thing emerges, the English needs to come up with a new word for it, while the Chinese just needs a composition of some existing characters with relevant meaning or context to make up a new combined word. A few examples: 火=fire, 箭=arrow, 火箭=rocket; 电=electric, 脑=brain, 电脑=computer; 温=warmth, 度=degree, 温度=temperature. By learning a thousand common Chinese characters, it should be adequate for normal daily use.

They don't. Chinese characters are built of a limited number of components (admittedly more than English's 26). It is quite possible for a Chinese person to deduce the meaning (and pronunciation) of any new word they encounter.

Korean has possibly the best writing system of any language ever devised. The main places where it breaks down are due to the period between when it was invented and when it gained widespread acceptance. But, it's still by far the best writing system for actually translating between written and spoken language that anybody has created. Probably the next best thing would arguably be IPA and that's rather limited in some other ways.

    in brief:
This video provides a detailed introduction to the Chinese phonetic system, often referred to as the Chinese alphabet.
The video emphasizes that this "alphabet" is designed primarily to assist with pronunciation, since written Chinese relies on character-based radicals instead of a typical alphabet.
The Chinese phonetic system is colloquially known as "Bopomofo," named after the first four letters: bo, po, mo, fo.
The video covers two main systems for writing the Chinese phonetic system: the Pinyin system, which is widely used in mainland China, and the Zhuyin system used in Taiwan.
The Pinyin system uses Latin letters, whereas the Zhuyin system uses unique symbols.
The host suggests that learners start with Pinyin due to its familiarity and ubiquity, but advises considering learning Zhuyin as well to avoid common pronunciation errors that come from applying English pronunciation to Pinyin.
The video then proceeds to provide a comprehensive walkthrough of the Chinese phonetic system, offering unique mnemonic devices for each initial (beginning sound) and medial (middle sound) in the system.
These sounds are divided into several groups based on their pronunciation characteristics:
    -labial initials,
    -dental initials,
    -guttural initials,
    -palatal initials,
    -retroflex initials, and
    -dental sibilant initials.
Each initial is illustrated with a corresponding example, Pinyin representation, and Zhuyin symbol.
The host connects each symbol to a memorable image or idea to aid learning.
The video also introduces three medials, providing similar mnemonic techniques for each.
The video emphasizes that proper Chinese pronunciation also involves different tonal qualities, but leaves this topic for another discussion.
The text is providing a mnemonic and visual guide to learning the Chinese alphabet, specifically focusing on the zhuyin system, also known as Bopomofo.
    - The symbol ㄠ is described to look like two bent knees of someone who's fallen, with its pinyin being AO.
    - The next symbol, ㄡ, is reminiscent of a bow tie in the process of being tied, pronounced OU in pinyin.
    - For ㄢ, the best English equivalent given is the 'a' sound in the Spanish word for bread, 'pan'. The pinyin is AN, with the zhuyin potentially resembling a baker's hat.
    - The pinyin for ㄣ is EN. It's best compared to the "-un" part in the phrase "young'un", suggesting an older person referring to a child.
    - The pinyin ANG corresponds to the symbol ㄤ, described as being similar to the word "wrong" without the 'wr', or like an 'a' sound followed by 'ng'.
    - ㄥ is likened to the word "dung" without the 'd', spelled as ENG in pinyin, with the zhuyin resembling a nose sniffing dung.
    - Lastly, ㄦ (pinyin ER) is compared to the uncertain sound of "err..." one might make when hesitating in speech.
The text encourages multiple repetitions of these lessons, possibly with songs in Chinese, to aid learning.
It also suggests visiting the website singandlearnchinese.com to download a Chinese pronunciation chart, and to check out the Sing & Learn Chinese song teaching videos for further practice.
It ends by encouraging learners to share their new knowledge and promising more videos in the future.

I'm learning Chinese using a tool that shows flash cards in hanzi for you to read. When you hit the space bar it gives an audible pronunciation and also shows the pinyin. For me I found that using this method I picked up pinyin without really thinking about it. At the start I would write down the hanzi character followed by the pinyin followed by my best attempt to write it phonetically in English. I did find that my home grown phonetic approach had a tendency to lose the tonal content a bit so beware lol. I now find that I can read the pinyin and in many cases I don't need the pinyin either. The biggest hurdle I have now encountered is trying to understand someone speaking to me. It's the classic ask a question you have practiced only to find you don't understand a word of the reply lol.

    • @vinicioslucas7319

This alphabet is barely used to write a text, I've seen it used to characters that you can't write in you phone or to don't write a curse word... This is used in dictionaries and it shows how to pronounce some character. I can write "shui jiao", but it can mean 睡觉 (sleep) 水饺 (a chinese food) 谁叫 (who is called ...), And a lot of different words, so you still need to memorize the pronunciation and meaning of each character.
If you are learning now, it's very hard at the beginning but it gets way more easier by the time

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 3 роки тому +4

Chinese doesn't really, there have been a few Romanization systems developed and bopomofo is pretty much exclusively used as an input method. Chinese does have an alphabet of sorts in the form of components. It's just that they aren't used the way that an alphabet is used. They're arranged into a character and can be used to guess the likely meanings and pronuncation of an unknown character. In the mainland you'll see Pinyin being used on signs as a way of helping people with poor literacy get around at times, but even with tone markers, which are usually absent, it's still a poor replacement for characters due to how many characters share the same spoken syllable and how many words only consist of one or two syllables in the first place.
But really, any effort to try and view Chinese as having an alphabet is going to be misleading and of only marginal utility, at best.

Amazing video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

No wonder, I have been eating some times in a chinese restaurant, but owner is from hong kong. He corrects my pronunciation and I got a little fruatrated and confused. He explained me the why's, but to me it is easier to learn mandarin and pronounce it as the most common pronunciation used. Still, I am really happy. Phrases I have learned I am able to communicate with him. Thank you for confirming pronunciation I have learned.
