I'm a Japanese. I speak Japanese, English and Chinese. Such a way as this learning to write in Chinese is nice for a better understanding of the Chinese pronunciation. Thank you for your guidance of teaching me Chinese in an effective way as in this video programme. .
So happy that you also include Traditional Chinese :) Too many people use simplified!
😊That’s what my channel is for❤️謝謝!
amen !! so true. There are somethings lost using simplified. one should use traditional chinese in my opinion. 😊😊
For me if I’m going to learn Mandarin, I want the traditional characters, makes more sense, right? No short cuts. Plus, why would one need to simplify the characters, if there’s a phonetic system to help learn the sounds/tones etc? I think the combo of the two is ideal. :)
@@melphillips1608 When I was in school, our Mandarin teacher did not teach us phonetics. Another school I went to had the phonetics in our text books, but was learning Cantonese. My siblings and I would usually write anlacised phonetics next to new words we see. Still a lot of effort to remember how to read and write the Chinese characters though.
Taiwan (number one) uses traditional exclusively.
So does Hong Kong, but they speak a different language.
I transitioned from using pinyin to zhuyin and I’ve never looked back! It helps so much when trying to accurately pronounce the characters! Thank you for this video!
I taught myself zhuyin a few months ago and it only took about 2 days. It’s convenient when you are trying to find specific characters on apps like Pleco dictionary since you can type the tones in and the exact pronunciation. It’s similar to when I learned Thai because they have a symbol for every specific sound so if you know the writing system, you can pronounce any word exactly how it should be. It’s definitely a lot slower to text with zhuyin, but with practice is gets a bit easier since your hand memorizes where the different symbols are. Even if some people think it might be useless, it’s still fun to learn and a good skill to have because I’ve seen things written in zhuyin in Taiwan before next to the characters, sometimes at temples for chanting purposes since they use a lot of Classical Chinese with uncommon transliterated characters. Glad you made this video so more people can join in Taiwanese culture. I think this is an important skill for anybody trying to study specifically with Taiwanese mandarin as I am.
謝謝分享👍👍👍🥺ㄒㄧㄝˋㄒㄧㄝ˙ㄈㄣㄒㄧㄤˇ
with 注音 there is no preconcieved way to say english. 注音 is learn a phonetic symbol learn a sound and its always associated to that symbol. then just learn combining medials with finals with tone rules which seem to come natural if one has a native speaker helping you. great post!*
I'm learning Zhuyin just cause it's cool and I've also learned katakana and hiragana, even though what I'm actually studying seriously is Simplified Chinese characters and Mandarin :P
I'm from Mainland China, but since middle school I started watching a ton of Taiwanese (BL) drama. It made me fell in love with Taiwanese culture and I wanted to learn traditional Chinese characters and bopomofo.
I know now there are lots of BL dramas! 一定要來台灣玩~! Please come to Taiwan🤗
I'm japanese🇯🇵!! I recently started to study taiwanese because I have a taiwanese friend at a university. This video is pretty helpful for me😊🎵 感恩♪

We in Malaysia learn Pinyin but later I noticed that in our dictionary 注音 is also used, it fascinated me so much that I taught myself that after graduation from high school. It took a bit of time for me to get used to it but I've never been happier knowing Zhuyin, I only wish I had grown up with Zhuyin instead.
Before my era, they used to teach 繁體字 and 注音, I wish they had kept that so that I wouldn't have to labour myself to relearn the traditional way from zero, it's so useful since I now have a Taiwanese friend and will have more in the future.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, we need more Taiwanese teachers! I really enjoy your videos. 真的很謝謝你,老師!
Your message made my day! Please do not hesitate to share this video with Chinese learning community in Malaysia 🇲🇾😊 ❤️
I learned both. My mother taught me when I was maybe 6 or 7 while I was going to Chinese school. I could use a Zhuyin dictionary, but I completely forgot it all when I started using Pinyin in Highschool/College level Chinese. In my opinion, it's easier to find the proper word when using Zhuyin to type.
I’m also from Taiwan but I moved to Canada when I was little so this video has been helpful for learning bopomofo again
This is excellent! Thank you for creating this video and for adding zhuyin to tour content! I’ve found zhuyin to help get a head start with pronunciation and it’s a good motivator particularly for self learners. Like Miss Lin says, the key is to master it quickly and keep going! Good luck!

I was born in Mainland China but grewup in New Zealand and was forced into Mandarin classes at a young age, I still have nightmares of learning Mandarin with Pinyin and Simplified characters. But Traditional seems a lot more approachable for me.
Native American and multilingual! Since I know Japanese, Navajo (Studies the most), and Arabic (With Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and hints of Swedish,) I thought this would help me learn Chinese easier. 👉🏽👈🏽 I'm not the most focused due to my AuDHD, but this is just for fun! ^^
you have such great teaching skills and clarity in these kinds of videos, the fact that you teach us how to pronounce in your own voice just makes the pronunciation clearer and better because most recordings use either google translate or some kind of source to teach us how to pronounce it and its kind of difficult!
Thank you for noticing! 😊❤️
Thanks Ms Lin, you teach very well.

I was too confused with pinyin, because if you are used to latin characters, it's very confusing to not pronounced 'I (sometimes)' and use 'j' 't' 'h' 'q' and so on for sounds that are not quite, or very far from my own use...Zhuyin solves the problem, you learn the sounds with the characters and there is no confusion.
To be frank, Pinyin’s initial targeted audience was primarily illiterate Chinese peasants in 1950s, i. e. someone with no previous exposure to Latin alphabet. And it did become a drawback when teaching foreigners Chinese.
Yes, ‘false friends’. That’s what I was finding. Isolating, I can pronounce correctly, but when reading and trying to say it out loud, then English brain interferes, ruining the flow. ;) Looking forward to using zhuyin to help. I think it’ll make it easier to transition to learning the characters when I’m ready.
Pinyin is super fangbian
Same thoughts. I find pinyin confusing, it's like they gave ABC characters different sounds.
Zhuyin, being native to Chinese folks, would obviously convey sounds accurately.
謝謝您!

Wow 🇹🇭泰國的朋友!🇹🇼same here!
@@MandarinWithMissLin I love Taiwan but I hope they switch to simplified chars 😅 traditional characters are harder to read on screen because of the many strokes

xiexie lin, now i know what bopomofo is, i got started on just pinyin but i will give it a try
Zhuyin was tought during my elementary days here in Philippine chinese schools in the 90s. We also have chinese dictionary where u search it by zhuyin. But now a days their using Pinyin..
我剛開始學中文的時候用拼音。
因為很容易猜怎麼唸。
而是打字的時候也很方便。
可是有時候用注音發音比較明顯
例如「ㄖ跟ㄦ」「ㄨ跟ㄩ」這類
所以兩個都知道更方便。
我打字的時候、如果忘記用哪個注音才對的話就用拼音。
不急的話用注音慢慢打字就好
我在慢慢學〜
不要太認真XD
This is super useful for those of us intending to live in Taiwan !

I learned zhuyin in 3 days through the website/app called Memrise (it's free guys). It really works. However, I still have trouble of finding a connection between zhuyin and the Chinese character (how the word is made, is it derived from zhuyin)...
Anw, your lecture whether in English or Chinese are always very effective and so easy to understand ;)
老師謝謝你
Memrise:) I’ve heard that one! Sounds effective too. 😊as for characters, 多寫、多看 慢慢 write a lot, read a lot, give it some time.
I think I understand what you mean. There isn't a connection between the zhuyin and the character, it's all arbitrary. You have to learn each character by ❤️ .
Thank you 2023
I'm a little late to this video lol.. But I just wanted to say thank you! I've been studying Chinese for a while, but I got interested in learning this system because my boyfriend is from Taiwan. Very very great video.
Glad my content helps! I know many of your loved one is Taiwanese:) Keep up the good work. Feel free to join my free speaking workshop
When I studied Mandarin in Taiwan it was called 注音符號 . Never heard it shortened to just 注音.
thank you so much!
I’ve made many videos teaching Chinese language vividly and in a funny way. I hope you can recommend my videos to those who want to learn Chinese.
My mandarían has definitely improved but only for reading and writing. My speaking sucks. I guess because I’m a shy guy. It’s easier for me to read and write. I hope to meet miss pretty Lin one day.
Thank you

新年快乐老師!
我觉得注音是使学习快
🥰ㄉㄨㄟˋ :) 新年快樂
I like zhuyin a lot. Especially because in my native language many letters make different sounds. The worst for me were definitely x, and especially q, which is like a k but out of the back of the mouth in my native language. Zhuyin takes practice of course, but I like it a lot. Especially when typing. I made it a habit to always type out every single character in zhuyin including tones. So I just remember the tones better, because with pinyin you don’t have that possibility :)
Glad you like it🥰
I think your language is Arabic, or anyway it uses an Arabic-type writing system right? I know because I studied the Arabic alphabet too and then by studying Pinyin I got confused by the q sounding like a "c" instead of the arabic ق "qaf"
@@sasino I'm late here, but by his nick I would guess either greenlandic or inuktitut as his language.
I have many Taiwanese friends that pronounce “er “ as “e”. When I was a kid, I used to go to Chinese school that taught 注音, and I was able to use a Chinese dictionary, but I completely forgot it. 😫
What do you think of using bopomofo to write foreign words, like with katakana?
Very pretty 😊 Taiwanese girl.
Hello im from south korea
If u wanna keep learning,I suggest that u need to text in ㄅㄆㄇㄈ keyboard 😃
Wonderful video!!!
It's so helpful, your teaching skills are so well ❤️
And I have a question:
Can I learn the bopomofo system to study simplified chinese? bc all the videos who teach bopomofo, are just for the mandarín of Taiwan, who use traditional characters, but I want to learn the simplified one, while I pronounce correctly each characters
So I have this question...
True! This combination is very rare. Haven’t seen it:)
Hey! Thank you for this Interesting video ^^
but what are the names of the Mandarin Zhuyin and Hokkien Zhuyin? Or are they represent the exact same sounds?
看完後就用注音鍵盤吧。你會學得很快。
I cannot speak for people who do not speak English or other Latin based languages ( eg Spanish , French ) , but for me pinyin is by far the easiest way to remember pronounciation of a word ; and also typing 汉字 。Bopomofo is similar to an alphabet as it is a phonetic system . Though it is so different to most ( popular ) languages . With the exception of Arabic . Arabic is hard to read and write as letters are connected within a word . Do you have any Japanese students ? How do they find the Bopomofo system ?? Your videos are very good btw 👍
Yeah I see what you meant 😊My Japanese friend found ㄅㄆㄇㄈ is hard at first but it really helps them so much with better pronunciation. For my students who are English speakers, they turn to ㄅㄆㄇㄈ because it flips their brain to Chinese mode. :)
@@MandarinWithMissLin Very interesting that English speaking students turn to Bopomofo !! I will have this in mind then ☺️ Keep going with your UA-cam channel , it is very good !!! I have had some tutoring but now I am " self educating " . Your channel has helped me a lot !
Bopomofo is like katakana and hiragana I think
I can teach my little one zhuyin now he finds it easier
❤️ㄏㄠˇㄅㄤˋ amazing!
I may be wrong about this, but I consider zhuyin to be a bit like stenography for Chinese. When writing pinyin, you need to spell out most sounds with up to three letters, whereas in zhuyin that's just one each. I have installed a zhuyin keyboard on my phone and intend to only use that now when typing. It will be slow at first, but I'm sure the effort will pay off.
對! 沒錯😎👍👍👍👍👍
One issue, how do you use 注音 to spell out words that end with "ong" like 中? And how would you combine the bopomofo for words like 学 (xue in pinyin)?
ㄓㄨㄥ中;學ㄒㄩㄝˊ :)
Where is the 02 video Miss Lin? I can't find it.
ㄗㄘㄙ is the hardest...lol 我也不知道拼音。 我知道注音。 😊😊😊😊

these are the things that appear when you change to chinese keyboard? from abc to these characters.

I'm preparing for the Level 3 TOCFL right now and the steering committee's word lists only have pinyin and no zhuyin 😢
Did you download the 8000 word list from www.sc-top.org.tw/english/download.php ? It's the first link under the Reference section. it's a zipped spreadsheet with columns for pinyin and zhuyin. It also comes with the fonts that you can install to get the zhuyin ruby text.
i have a question! typing in Pinyin vs Zhuyin which is faster??
In zhuyin, for example:
If you want to type the character "是" in Pinyin, you need to type 3 letters, "s-h-i"
But in zhuyin, if you want to type the same character, you just type the Simbol "ㄕ" Since it represent the "shr" sound
Here is the phonics of bopomofo: ㄅㄆㄇㄈㄉㄊㄋㄌㄍㄎㄏ ㄐㄑㄒ ㄓㄔㄕㄖㄗㄘㄙ ㄧㄨㄩ ㄚㄛㄜㄝㄞㄟㄠㄡㄢㄣㄤㄥㄦ || here is the sound for bopomofo: . / V \ || ( btw I am from Taiwan )
Wow good lesson🌻 but you know some times Chinese character doesn't make sense to me 😁😂like 学生 means student. blablabla
How to memorize
why did I only hear about zhuyin now? lol, hope to master it soon
😊🔥加油加油!
Is it "be, pe, me, fe" or "bo, po, mo,fo"? "e" sound or "o" sound?
You’re right it sounds more like be pe me fe:)
@@MandarinWithMissLin in what way, it is easier to remembering them? You mentioned some are from parts of characters. Where one can find out more about the origins for them? I found it difficult to remember them arbitrarily.
Huh it's like hiragana or katakana
I studied chu in, pofomofo, I am not too keen about pinyin. I prefer chu in.
貓咪
Instead of BOPOMOFO I heard it as PO-POH-MO-FO, TO-TOH-NO-LO,. KO-KOH-HO and so on
😥😭 I’m only just beginning. This bopomofo/ zhunyin is very different and difficult. So why don’t the Chinese just spell out the words using these scribbles to make up the characters? These all too different from the words they are meant to spell out . It’s all too confusing -
Some of them look like japanese kana and get me confused lol
