    Here in the UK the practicalities of setting up a business are quite different although the principles are much the same. The best thing I did was going on a short business startup course with my local Chamber of Commerce. This told me all I needed to do, gave me loads of advice and pointed me in the right direction. And the best bit was it was completely free. They also threw in a free business mentor for the first year. This led me to finding a good accountant who did all the legwork in setting up bank accounts, taxes and incorporating the business. This wasn't free but he saved me far more than he costs and he's stayed with me for the last decade and is always my go-to when I have a problem or whacky idea. Don't try and do this on your own. It will only end in tears. Reach out and you'll find there's help out there if you just ask.

    I have been using quickbooks for 20 years and love it. My CPA wife approves of it cause I don’t have to bug her 100 times a day lol. Plus everything is streamlined and ready for taxes.
    One question I’d like to know is about portfolio work for new clients. Obviously with the digital world that’s the first look someone’s going to have. So how many images do you recommend to have on say IG before potential clients will even consider you? Is it best to have a diverse portfolio vs say a more specific area like baked goods, cocktails or menu items and so on? Should we also be working on developing short videos for social media, with quick transactions and sweeping shots? Didn’t know if clients are looking for all encompassing photogs. Last question, sorry have a few is on a printed portfolio, do you ever find taking print work into a meeting more compiling vs showing them your website or IG account?
    Appreciate all that you do in this space and more. I have 25 years experience behind the camera, from fashion to weddings and anything in between. However I’ve only in the recent months decided to start thinking about the food industry as a client outside of headshots. It’s a different animal with many hats for the Photog to wear but I’m loving it thanks for inspiring us all.

    Even with all of the options of doing things electronically back when I used to work as a photographer I kept a small note book in my camera bag I wrote down the client, products sold, mileage and expenses nothing fancy just a way to keep track and I transferred those numbers too my computer later on.
    Also if you buy a lot of things on Amazon get an Amazon Business account and buy your supplies and equipment with that account that way at the end of the year if you need to you have a way to add up your expenses.
    I'm not doing photography as a business I was taking care of my Mom before she passed away and I did not do any business as a photographer, the state closed my business account, which is not a big deal I can always start again right now I'm working a part time job and other gigs until I decide when I want to start again. Still got my camera gear😀

    I use Quickbooks, but I have my accountants handle all the book keeping for $300 a month. It may seem expensive, but it keeps me out of trouble with the IRS.

    Contemplating as to if I found all this stressful or not. A tiny bit is the answer. I am a certified digital archivist currently under contract and I have had to do several of the same things in that capacity. As well, I handle my husband's business setup, social media and website. Think the part that I found that I am still in the dark on are the various tax forms. The forms that clients would be asking for and how those are generated. I might should clarify. My husband calls it our website as I contribute photos. I call it his website as I am first an foremost an archivist. I went through a photography program to take better images of museum artifacts. I'm a good bit slow on the artist side of the equation.

    Can I ask a question about cropping picture for instagram, if it`s not going to be 1:1. Do you crop in camera or afterwards. I don`t crop in camera because I can`t choose 4:5. But if I crop afterwards it sometimes get`s to close.

    • @TheBiteShot
      @TheBiteShot  2 роки тому

      I always crop in post so I can have other cropping options for one photo. Software like Lightroom, Photoshop and CaptureOne all have the ability to set the aspect ratio for cropping so you get the exact sizing you need.

    Why is your video skipping? It drops out - goes blank for about 1/2 second every couple of minutes in the vicinity of the 5-minute mark. Just want to bring this to your attention. Perhaps it's a problem with your camera.
