I so appreciate you being kind to your beginner self. I've watched these kinds of videos and thought, "wow that looks like what I do now" and feel crappy when they make fun of it or rip it to shreds.
    Thank you for being kind.

I hope you know that videos you posted 3 years ago are still helping people. This video is amazing. I can't tell you how many times I have said "Nah, I can't do a paid gig. I'm too new, too inexperienced, too whatever...". You're so right. You have to just go for it. Thank you Joanie!

Great information, thank you! I've done a few paid gigs knowing nothing.I'm now assisting a pro photographer who had a production company for 27 years and learning a TON every shoot. Lighting is one of my responsibilities on shoots and I have no background or real understanding about lighting other than natural light. I learn more every time we go on a shoot. We're doing a big project shooting environmental portraits ... so much FUN and a lot of work. I'm so happy to have found you!

I have JUST started my business this week and this was SO needed. I do headshots and portraiture and it is TERRIFYING to feel like you don't know everything yet still are handing out contracts and charging booking fees and being official! Your video had me cracking up in places because man... do I know those feelings! I had been holding back for so long, thinking I needed to know way more than I knew... my first two headshot clients actually got me onto the recommended photographer list for the top acting agency in town. I literally cried when I got that news because the voices in my head, man... it was validation, and so is this video. I have a TON to learn, but had to trust that I actually know enough because at the end of the day, when people see my images, they're delighted. Me? Still shocked to know people can be delighted with what I do. Ha ha ha! Thank you for the great video and the wonderful encouragement to those of us out here just putting on the wings.

Thank you so much for this video! Seriously so helpful. I'm currently in that stage you described as having those voices in my head that are keeping me on the fence about valuing my work more and starting to charge for my photography. This video definitely gave me a push in the right direction and I greatly appreciate it! :)

I really appreciate and admire your honesty about your own work and learning experience. Too many artists want to tear into each other during a critique because at some point in their own career it happened to them and it was called a critique. The fact is critiquing is also an art form and not done properly it can stunt an artist growth.

As soon as Donald Trump got elected it really put on perspective that confidence is way more important than actual skills in pretty much everything.
I mean it was 2015, 3 years ago since she started and now she as a youtube channel and Free e-book and stuff ... Dont get me wrong but ... you know ...

    • @kylestewart4444

That it is: insane. But that's a major (not only) reason why the photography business has become a race to the bottom. Stand out, learn the craft, be different, teach others.

I'm more into portrait and landscape photography but this video really made me feel like I could relate. I came from a Nikon entry level D3400 and it was an amazing camera but the wife decided to surprise me with a Sony Ar7iii which is hands down...WOW. My point, you hit a lot of topics where I know I was thinking one way and my camera decided to shoot another. I come from an IT background but I feel with any career path, you never know it all, you're always learning. I think thats what hit home with me the most, Ive subscribed and not because Im interested in shooting food, personally, I am more a taste tester but I love you ideas and how you relate. I look forward to watching more of your videos to give me the inspiration I need to do what I do. Side note, I'm still anticipating that first paid gig. Not that Im not trying, Im honing my skills more but I think you may have pushed me into the direction of...lets give it a go and Ill do my best and learn from it. Thank you!

Joanie - I can't begin to tell you how much you've helped me!! I recently lost my job due to Covid and because of a small technicality, I wasn't able to get unemployment, so I've been scrambling like you can't imagine as I'm just trying to figure out how to pay my bills now!! Straight up scary - I'm all by myself with absolutely no other income to help. This seems like something I think I can do without a huge amount of drama, so I'm sure trying to make this happen. I have shot as 2nd shooter for numerous weddings, and I've done a fair amount of marketing & advertising photography, but I've always worked for someone else... partly because I know that my greatest weakness is the business side of it all - thus, the reason I was always more than happy to let someone else be in charge and handle all the business part of it. Now I'm at a point where literally just paying the bills is where it's at for me so I'm learning real quickly that I desperately need to learn the business side so I can hopefully make something happen here for myself. Obviously, not having any money for training, I'm having to really depend on the training I can find online for "free"... so THANK YOU for putting this channel together and for giving so much of yourself to help others (you're literally helping me keep my apartment and my vehicle at the moment - basically, just my life in general, no extras). Thank you so much - I simply cannot tell you how much this channel and these videos have meant to me and how much they've helped!!

I cannot even begin to explain to you how this helped me! I have been scouted to be in a Worldwide Art show at the end of November, here in Houston. I am terrified, excited, and stressed on level 10. I have been offered little shoots here and there and I was not even close to being ready for that but when I was asked about this one I jumped right in bc waiting is only prolonging the anxiety of getting the first "gig" over with. I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing and you literally just put all my fears at ease! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Really nice job providing useful info for those of us still riding with training wheels! Thanks so much for taking the time to share what you've learned.

thank you so much for making this video and sharing what you didn't know when you first started. I will do my first paid photoshoot today and I'm so glad I found this video and watched it because it honestly really boosts my confidence! just like you, I didn't know my rates and I almost reject the offer last week but my friends encouraged me to take it and so I did! and then this video is a big help to make me realize that it's okay to not know everything because you just started!

I just celebrated my one year anniversary of my first paid shoot (150 bucks to shoot a university pops orchestras coffee mugs they were selling). I can tell you the greatest teacher is doing. It feels good now to do a shoot on something I’ve already done and learned from.
