OMG Joanie this is so on point about networking!!! First I have to say your content is nothing but superb and you are so generous in the sharing of your knowledge of the industry, thank you :) I don't normally make comments but I just had to about this one. I have been in business, sales then photography, for over forty years. Over the years I have always believed in the style of networking you talk of here. I totally agree it works!!! I often get business from the guys I have networked with at events over the years. It is not unusual for people I have known for twenty years or more to say, hey Graham, we are organising an event, are you still doing photography. Or my daughter is getting married will you shoot the wedding as we would love you to cover it for us. Maybe it's something else, it' no matter the point is they may not have even seen my pictures. I'ts good enough that they know me, we get on and they want to give me the work. I can't emphasise enough how this has been the biggest sales tool for me over the years. You are right, the last thing you do is sell your specific skills when networking, that comes later. I could go on about this for hours but you have covered one of the most important points in building your business so well here!!!
Alot of great and helpful information. I've been shooting for 4 plus years and with videos like yours definitely makes it less scary continuing to pursue this wonderful career as a professional photographer. Looking forward to learning so much more!
I love your videos, they always make me feel better. Might I just pitch one thing to you? Either take your lens off auto focus or get a lens that doesn't breath so much. You have such an engaging manner and face and I find it takes me out the moment when you eyes are very often going out of focus. This is meant to be a positive comment, please, I hope you take it as such x
I’m loving this series so much! Thank you so much, Joanie! I like how you explain things in detail, what to expect and how to be realistic. Looking forward to the next video! :D
Joanie, thank you so much for sharing this sweet and seriously jam-packed video. I took notes so I definitely know I'll be implementing what I learned. Have a wonderful week too!
I've been watching your content for years, I finally started my food photography buisiness this year and so far its going great! Thanks for all the amazing info youve provided, its been instrumental in my journey. For restaurant photography, do you have a specific kit that you use for that? Specifically a lighting kit, the main thing holding me back from that is that, do I bring my whole lighting set up to the restaurant?
That is awesome! And yep, I have a prior video sharing my setup for small restaurant photoshoots. Of course, if it's a larger scope in terms of the images and production then I'll bring more, but for the straightforward local restaurant photoshoot this covers it: ua-cam.com/video/VCR0i1cUvdo/v-deo.html
Hi! Here ya go! Dear ___________, I hope this e-mail finds you well. I'm reaching out because I'm a commercial food photographer and long time fan of your cookies. I especially love the chocolate dipped variety and shared them with my family last week. They were a hit! My business focuses on creating high quality images and videos for food brands. We handle productions large and small and love bringing the visions of creative marketers into reality. You can see some examples of past work and my portfolio (provide link). If you have any campaigns coming up or have any photo or video needs, I'd love to set up a call to learn more about your business and how I can help. Thank you for your time and consideration. Regards, Joanie Simon JoanieSimon.com (e-mail address) (phone number)
You are a sweetheart I have been thinking of doing this course..since a while now. Just would like to ask you I live in new jersey is it advisable to do it at a community college in NJ cause the courses here would by less expensive than a private course or will skillshare be a good decision
Hi Joanie, thank you so much for sharing all your wisdom. I absolutely love your videos and I have learned an awful lot by watching them. One question I have is if you end up doing a lot of ecommerce photos as well when working for food producers, for example? I love doing the styled food photography but I really do not enjoy the ecommerce side of things. How do you deal with this?
I know Aputure is popular for portable quality LED options. I don't have any specific models that I've used of theirs, but that's the first place I'd look.
Hi! It's from Audio Technica. I've had it for years and it's been a great mic. adorama.rfvk.net/c/2647954/51926/1036?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adorama.com%2Fatatw1701l.html
Are you able to comment on the proportion of clients who bring their food items to your kitchen to be photographed versus you going to for instance restaurants to photograph food that is being prepared in their kitchens. For my part it would be important to know this as a beginner in order to plan lighting.
For me personally, at this place in my career most often we're shooting in my studio and the client provides the product and my stylist and his team bring and prepare the food.
Anybody know where to find local advertising agencies or e-commerce clients in an Area? I search google but just cannot find anything other than people who build e-commerce sites and info e-mails for people looking to build sites..? Thanks
also just to add that Joanie that honestly no one in this space deliveries content in such a logical and structural way, my mind is always left invigorated, inspired and informed about my next step a head.
Definitely seeing a lot of that! Social media video has been a big part of my business the last couple of years. About 50% of the work I do for clients involves short form social videos and that continues to be the trend.
Even though i worked in food photography professionally and then quite to open my interior design office (that's my university degree) but i still enjoy and love taking food photography and photography as an all, and my insta page reached 650 pictures i think (private account though 😅), and still going, i would like to thank you for your great contact and amazing personality, and if one day you visited Kurdistan, hit me up to do some photography 😄
I love the increased level of quality and production value in your videos. Get going and keep growing
Thank you for your video. I just started getting into food photography.
Great advice! Love this longer video, very informative. It's hard to keep a long video interesting when you're head bobbing, and you did a great job.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Joanie, I'm loving this series! The business aspect is SO HARD for me, particularly finding clients. So helpful! Thank you!!!
So glad it has been helpful! You’ve got this 🙌
Awesome Joanie, really helpful, thank you!
I began going to photography school early last year because I was so inspired by your food photography. It's been an amazing experience so far. :)

Great video! Whats the cool thing you are doing with those jump cuts? Really like that, far less jarring than the start stop thingy I do haha.
That is all the magic of Yousef, our video editor. Not sure his method but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you drop him a line: www.yousefah.com/
@@TheBiteShot you have a winner there. Looks great! Hope you are keeping well

Thank you, Joanie! Networking has always intimidated me, but thanks to you now I know it doesn’t have to be awkward, stressful or unauthentic.

Do you do any other genre of photography for fun? If so, could you do a video on it?
LOVE THIS. Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this Great Video. Can't find the link for the outreach email template you are talking about?

Do you recommend new/ beginner photographers to attend these trade shows? Awesome video BTW truly amazing 🤩
Networking at any stage of the game is great. Never hurts to meet new people and make connections 🙌

Hi joanie ,you are amazing as usual.
What's is name of the mic you are using in this video?!

Do you suggest a paid site for copyright images? Next time we need you to talk about copyright images please.
Dear bite shot I'm just really confused how to put together a mood board for clients
also just to add that Joanie that honestly no one in this space deliveries content in such a logical and structural way, my mind is always left invigorated, inspired and informed about my next step a head.
I like to build mood boards in Canva. They have some easy templates where you can drag and drop in images.
Are clients asking you to do more videos due to the rise of TikTok and Instagram changing to more video platforms?
Definitely seeing a lot of that! Social media video has been a big part of my business the last couple of years. About 50% of the work I do for clients involves short form social videos and that continues to be the trend.
First comment !!!!
I really assumed that food bloggers just ran around with their iPhones and did their own shooting.
