Regarding the region A locked 4k of this movie and the comment at 6:12 "...whether it's intentional, whether it is by accident, I don't know exactly what is going on..." You are one funny guy, Ken. Scream Factory: Oh, its region A locked? Oops, our bad. This "accidentally" slipped our notice. We'll make sure to keep an eye out for any more "accidents" in the future.
Yeah, I have noticed Shout has had to make A LOT of apologies lately for issues with their releases. I am still bum-hurt over what they did with their Bruce Lee set. Watching an amorphous blob that is supposed to be Bruce Lee walk into a restaurant in the Return of the Dragon disc...still stings...especially when, instead of replacing the bad disc(s), they re-released the movies separately using superior Japanese masters that you had to purchase all over again. -___- This started a massive distrust I now have with Shout. I only buy movies I absolutely need, instead of being a completitionist.
I remember watching parents protest outside the theater on the news causing some theaters to pull the film. Six months later they release it again to theaters and I think it even made more money. My only gripe with this release is it's just region locked, UHD discs should be region free.
@ True. That doesn’t change the fact that 4Ks have generally been region free and implementing region locks at this point (especially if the companies/studios weren’t before) just creates problems. Not having to worry about regions has been awesome. I’d like to avoid buying another player years into the game.

One of my faves as well. First saw it in the theater. I only have the DVD which also includes Part II. I don't have a 4K player, but this release makes me want to get one. I love special features, too.
Gilmer Mccormick is still gorgeous to this day. She was great as sister Margaret who always felt bad for Billy and stood by his side whenever he was in a bad situation with Mother Superior.
If it's region locked, I'm guessing Shout ran into a licensing issue. Region locked 4Ks are pretty rare and it's usually due to an international copyright holder blocking the region due to them having the rights for distribution. Silent Night is actually one of my favorite horror movies. It's actually well made, fun and has a great atmosphere. I wish the uncut version got a 4K disc but I'm fine with the theatrical version due to the quality of the uncut inserts. It's a little too jarring.
It’s most likely region locked because the distributed doesn’t have rights to sell it outside the US but SF wanted to get it out in time for Xmas anyway
It's been 40 years since this film was released in theaters back in 1984 i remember discovering this film on the Internet back when i was a kid and knowing about it's origins and it's controversy around its release back in 1984 this is one of the most controversial films of it's era this film is more felt like The Passion of the Christ of it's era when it was made i'm glad a got a 4K release from Scream Factory this is one of those holiday horror classic like My Bloody Valentine and Halloween this film is ahead of its time it's controversy it's still be remember by a lot of people including those in the horror community and myself also is Silent Night Deadly Night 2 getting a 4K release Ken?
I got this release. I also got the previous blu-ray release from Shout...and I have the Anchor Bay two-movie set of the original and the remake. So I feel pretty solid when I say I like this movie...a lot! That said, I am pretty sure Shout factory used the same 4K master from 2017. Understand that when you program the HDR layer, you can use that to correct film damage as well as add or deepen color (*color grading.) I think Shout's business model is to perform the 4K scan with minimal clean up or at least use a previous 4K scan from the license holder. Then spend time using the HDR programed layer to clean up the image quality for an actual 4K transfer. They release a 2K blu ray from the 4K master with the minimal to no clean up. Then re-release it later as a 4K disc with all the clean up. The only proof I have of this, is their recent releases of Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. They simply took the Sony 4K master and added Dolby Vision (Sony only released with HDR10.) They did no additional work on video quality. IN fact, I think Shout hasn't done ANY film restoration work since...maybe 2015?
I've got the uk 101 films 2, 3 Blu-ray pack of this set, and it includes an extended cut of the first film on another disc too, and yeah it's good. Oh I think a 3d steelbook image would be awesome,
I am hoping that scream redoes Terror in the aisles that is one that I noticed a lot of scratches and visual noise on I hope they get the same ambition they did with silent night deadly night to clean it up and give it the attention it deserves
I don't understand why the poor cut footage can't be improved like they did with the My Boody Valentine uncut footage, which looks fantastic. I believe those were less-than-ideal source materials (video tape?) too.
I watched this for the first time just back in November. It was very enjoyable. The uncut version has some excellent kills. It sucks that the footage is of very poor quality (not as bad as the cut footage from Friday the 13th part 7) but I prefer the uncut to at least have it

Yeah hard pass for me. Scream factory needs to start including the longer versions of these movies on 4K! For a label that has spent the last 4/5 years mostly just rehashing their Blu-ray catalogue on 4K it makes no sense. 99% of people want to see the longer cuts of these movies when they watch them, we don’t mind if the extended bits come from a lower quality master and won’t match the rest of the film, this has been happening before 4K was a thing and seems like most collectors accept that is the case sometimes. I really don’t get why they made that decision , the only thing I can think of is maybe Arrow or another label has exclusive 4K rights to the extended version. Maybe that’s what happened with Life Force as well seeing as how Arrow is releasing the international cut of that in 4K whereas Scream just had the blu ray for it. This is such a mixed bag release because on the one hand I commend them for going back and cleaning it up more and adding new features but I have to think the unrated version will get a 4K release somewhere down the line so I can’t pull the trigger. I stayed away from Life Force for the same reasons and was rewarded for it so fingers crossed we see Arrow put something out. A box from Arrow with the first 2 would be amazing and really compliment the release from Vestron of the other sequels. Thanks for the review Ken! No matter what the people say on Reddit, your enthusiasm for physical media and creating these videos helps people inform their purchase and channels like this are one of the best resources for labels to get an idea of how their releases are being received and what they can do to improve.
Scream factory is so lazy. Arrow are releasing the international cut in 4k. Scream factory said it couldn't be done, so it was an extra on blu ray. Also with AI the Unrated scenes could be inserted into the 4k and look really good.
I understand why they didint include the unrated cut on 4k. Them scenes do not look good at all. I hope they do part 2 on 4k as well. I still would like some reversible art or something.
One of the cool features they had ALL THE WAY BACK to DVD days called “Seamless Branching.” Which would be used for cases just as this one. Ideally, you’d choose which version you wanted to watch on the main menu. If you picked the Theatrical Cut, it would place as was designed. But if you chose the unrated version, for example, you’d get that same file played back to you but seamlessly adding in those other parts of the movie missing from the other cut. This works well with adding more- not so much taking away (so Directors cuts like Blade Runner would be nearly impossible with this method) so that’s probably why you don’t see it as much if at all these days- but something like Silent Night Deadly Night could ABSOLUTELY use Seamless Branching to add in those few shots (which DO look bad, you’re not wrong there).
Maybe the scenes don’t look that great…But the rest of the movie does! So why should I be forced to watch the whole rest of the movie in a lower quality if I want to watch the extended cut? Just make a disclaimer saying the source for the extended material was less than ideal and that there will be a shift in image quality for those bits. Labels have been doing this for over a decade and it’s a much better solution than what Scream is doing atm.
