How can you argue a title release on 4K is dumb if you've never seen the film? Bashing a movie you've never seen is not cool. But, even if you did see the Robocop film and disliked it, I wouldn't agree that that alone makes it a "dumb release." We all own movies that others would hate or dislike. To each their own. Put everything on 4K and let each individual decide what's worth buying and what isn't.

I agree. I actually liked this film but still not as good as the og but I like the new twist Alex Murphy and OCP. Overall a good film. Wouldn't call it a remake, more a retelling
A lot of times, if a studio doesn't offer what I want, I make my own boxed sets. I buy the films individually, then put them in a multi Blu-ray case. In many cases, it saves money, and gives me the more complete and comprehensive set i want, and usually ends up saving me space on my shelf, to boot.
Great topic. Those were really dumb releases. I also hate releases like Paramount Scares with movies you already bought 2 or 3 times before. Or Warner Bros with the flimsy carton Interstellar Boxset where you have to smudge your disc with your fingers. While initially it was like their normal Boxset releases. I cancelled it immediately when they changed it

The NeverEnding Story takes the top spot for me. The replica chainsaw is dumb to me but you can still get a standard edition. It’s a business decision to sell replica to people who want them. On the other hand, if people have a choice to get standard edition of The NeverEnding Story, many will not get the big set. Imprint knows that and tried to take advantage of that by releasing a ginormous set ONLY.
The thing that upsets me the most about the Texas Chainsaw box set is they locked two new special features in it and I’m very interested in those features but I’m not gonna spend $200-300 just for that alone. Also the chainsaw itself looks super cheap, you could get a replica for so much less
This reminds me of that Mad Max metal tin box set from about 12 years ago. That had this thick rim sticking out on the bottom, which caused it to damage any movie that was next to it.
Lionsgate recently said on a podcast that the steelbook set for Rambo was expensive to make and didn't sell as well as people think. and those type of steel boxes are not likely surface again. So reprinting that as a sat was never gonna happen.
Don’t get how that set didn’t sell well when they are out of print. Perhaps they had to clear the remaining stock with a huge discount at one point. The other funny thing about this is that this release went below my radar for some reason. By the time I saw Ken or someone else showed it off, it was already sold out. I thought something like this would have benefitted with a boutique release, since it was already available individually in 4K long before. A studio release in a box set with only the steelbook covers as the pull factors aren’t enough reasons to double dip.

Ken, I bought the Robocop remake for my son at Dollar Tree. My son is deaf and can't speak although he can moan and groan. One of my son's favorite actors is Samuel L. Jackson and he's in that movie.
The same packaging the saw series had is the one my collection of Mr. Robot came in. It's so hard to get the discs out of it, i really hate it because i feel like im about to break the disc taking it out.
I don’t think it’s dumb at all. People love that move especially if you grew up with it. It’s nice to have something special to mark the 40th anniversary. You don’t have to buy it and you will get a standard edition at some point. The main issue is the delivery cost as it’s in Australia. I don’t know how much postage is to America. I purchased it recently and it didn’t come to 200 dollars. It’s £126.44 ($154) excluding delivery but it was £150 ($182 dollars) including delivery for me in England. It’s a big purchase but if I ever want to sell it I will make my money back if not more.
Agreed. Every movie deserves to be on 4k. Each person can then decide which ones are worth owning and which are not. And no two people will agree on every release, so put them all out.
As much as I loathe the case that they used for the Saw set, I saw a 10-film set as inevitable, given that they also did 7-film, 8-film, and 9-film sets before, and with those sets, the first 7 films were crammed onto 3 Blu-rays/4 DVDs with no extras. Meanwhile, the 10-film set has the movies on individual discs, the 3D version of Saw 7, and the special edition DVDs of the first three films that have extras that were never on Blu-ray. The set has nothing new, but it has everything a completist would want from the Saw films. If only they put it in a better case...
The quality of the movie is not really the reason to release it on 4k or not. I am sure there are hundreds of movies on 4k with imdb rate worse than the Robocop remake.
New to your vids but have you seen the horrible DVD release of Stargate SG-1 that had the 3D gate on the box? It's old but one of the worst sets I have, as all the disks are in cardboard sleeves that ensure the chance they get scratched to heck every time they're removed! That Criterion 40 looks like similar packaging!
Some dumb releases I can think of is, I Know What You Did Last Summer getting a steelbook for the Blu-ray version and no steelbook for the 4K version. Also, raising the price for the Deadpool and Wolverine 4K steelbook to $65 was anither dumb move smh.
Criterion 40th Anniversary box set would be GREAT for new collector on 50% off sale. 😃👍 Every year we have more and more collectors joining the physical media family.
Then they should avoid Criterion. Criterion has fallen so far behind other boutique labels that it is shocking. They are just betting on people buying their terrible releases based on name recognition.

I dunno that Saw set looks awesome with all those films included, Blu rays etc in a compact package. I'd tape the disc hubs gently to keep discs from falling out and be happy with all the content.
Gimmick packaging is stupid. The Third Man - gorgeous box set. But the whole music box is crap, it worked twice then never again. No response from publisher when I wrote to them or tweet them. 10:59 the emphasis you put right here hurts me Ken. Ouch. I’ve been trying to get that video up to 14k man. I watch it all the time. I love this release. I love the disc art, art cards, box art, I love how the disc are reminiscent of a puzzle. It’s fun. I love the SAW films. I take no issue with this release, it’s the 20th anniversary it’s a special release and I’m not sure if we will even get that 11th entry. Mine isn’t broken and I use mine almost everyday. I shuffle through my discs just fine and no scratches. I’ve watched all the special features for all 23 discs to celebrate the 20th anniversary. I catalogued each feature in my “spiral” note”book” and I adore this particular release.
The set seems real cool, but I haven't had the best of luck with this sort of packaging. My Twilight Zone Blu-ray set is very similar and while I don't have any scratches on my discs (Blu-rays aren't prone to that like DVDs) they fall out and you do have to take out several to get to the one you want. Still I'm happy it works for you and enjoy the set 😎

I know Ken was really struggling to get those discs out in his review. It can be a hassle but I throughly enjoy the puzzle aspect this gives me. Even knowing which disc is what is part of the fun for me. Totally understand why this boxset gets the hate though. Thank you yeah it’s everything I would want from SAW so I’m a happy camper 🧩🎮🌀
That Trainspotting 4K packaging was definitely the dumbest of anything I bought. I’m thinking of making a custom case so it can go better with my T2:Trainspotting 4K. I thought a lot of the Walmart steelbooks were dumb, some stores still have a lot left over. A lot of the dumbness is the pricing, like $25 is too much for a blu-ray only steelbook (Mill Creek). And I’d actually like to get the Cutthroat Island 4K, but not for $35! How are you gonna overprice one of the most notorious flops of the 1990s? And I thought Shivers was an odd choice for a Vestron steelbook. It’s too obscure, and how are you going to put it out as a steelbook when you could barely move the slipcover, which I already have? I love David Cronenberg, but not that much. They should’ve just put out more copies of Maximum Overdrive, that’s one I don’t have at all.

Any 4k (or bluray) set that has the disks in individual cardboard sleeves that can't be pulled out without touching the diak surface. I pulled all of the Avatar way of water 4-disk collectors edition disks into normal mukti disk case.
There are thousands of people who are being introduced to the Criterion Collection every year, and the 40th anniversary boxset is designed for them. You don't have to know the company, just the movies that they released. Also, while on sale, it was $10 per movie. There's nothing stupid about buying a boxset that's designed for you.
Somebody just getting into a company is unlikely to buy their greatest hits boxset, rather, they can just buy the titles that interest them for far cheaper and leave out the ones they don’t care about.

They did Twilight the same as the Saw release. Stacked disc and all. I didn’t like how the blu rays where but I was able to stack it where only the main movie was shown.
Contrary to what you think of a film, it's never a good look to call something dumb without every giving it a try. ROBOCOP remake has its fans and though obviously inferior to the original it does several things better then the original.

This felt dumb at the time, or maybe just a bit disappointing, but when I opened up my Mexico 4K Trilogy box set and found that only one of the movies was on 4K, that felt pretty dumb to me. I get that with the other two movies there was probably no point in doing them on 4K based on how they were filmed, but it was still something of a let down when it happened.
yeah! it's silly for The Texas Chainsaw Box set, I even think the 4k Collectors Edition of The Conversation was a bit silly too, as you get a Cassette Tape of it soundtrack, which wouldn't be used, as they should have included a CD with a pretend Cassette Tape instead, for that price, which was £59.99, in the UK.
I bought the remake of RoboCop because I liked the movie and I saw the original when I was ten but I didn't remember much of it. When I saw the remake I liked it and I went and rewatched the original and loved it too.
Yeah, I totally agree on that Criterion box set. I have collected a lot of Criterion's and why would anyone want to buy that? Like you say, how would it serve people like me who already have a lot of those titles in the box set and for a newbie, wouldn't it be better for them to slowly dip their toes in the waters of Criterion titles so they can get a taste of the movies before buying more of them? I honestly thought about Chainsaw cus I'm a collector. But common sense prevailed. I knew it sucked. If it had more stuff then maybe but it gives nothing. I with you, I spent on Neverending Story and I'm so much happier with it. I believe it's the best restoration I've ever seen of a film I've always loved.
Whats funny is the trainspotting one glows in the dark but ive not seen anyone bring that up at all. You have to put it directly in the line of sight to the sun, which you never would when its on the shelf. Just pointless. The criterion 40 disc set i believe is all bluray. Buts its a pretty good price at $10 a disc. Usually its $20. But its gor very few people, which for a celebration sucks.

Arrow owns Robocop 1 currently, and their 4k DID come out last year... and it is GlOrIoUs! BTW; Shout Factory, unless they just Failed to announce the Special Features on the site, has taken the Top Spot for Dumbest Release of 2025 right from the Get Go! The Who's Tommy 4K, where the ONLY Special Feature IS the FEATURE. What a sad let down.
I agree that TCM boxset was the dumbest of them all, basically trying to take advantage of the hard-core TCM fans and horror collectors but I don't think must people fell for it.
I don't mind the Saw set. I had Saws 1 through 7, as individual blu-rays. So, I was getting 3 movies I didn't already own, and the box set takes up less shelf space than the 7 blu-rays (which I then got rid of.) As for the Trainspotting 4k, I just put it with my mediabooks. I have a shelf that's just mediabooks and slightly odd-shaped cases. Trainspotting fits in just fine there.
By the way, does anyone remember the old Back to the Future Trilogy set? possibly the first time it came out on blu-ray? It had to come with instructions on how to take the discs out, and foam pads between the layers. To protect the discs? So the spacing was right? I don't know what the were thinking. That was dumb. I got the next Trilogy release (30th anniversary?,) and gave away the older one. Not my problem anymore.
As far as Rambo goes, I have the individual 4K's with the slipcovers, and that's good enough for me. That Rambo Steelbook boxset is nice, and it was one of the last boxsets sold at Bestbuy before they stopped carrying physical media. But, I'm totally fine not owning that boxset because it means I don't have to have the abomination that is "Rambo: Last Blood" in my collection. What a god-awful movie. I'll never understand why Sly did it? It's not like he needs the money. Now, for my fellow film enthusiasts, who actually liked "Rambo: Last Blood," I bear you no ill-will, different strokes for different folks, I get it. And if you're searching for that beautiful boxset, more power to you, and I hope you find it at a decent price. I love the first four Rambo films with numbers 2 and 3 being my favorites.
I did get the Robocop remake, but it was bought used on blu-ray for only about $3, because I was curious, and I had seen Joel Kinneman in other things and liked him. Have not yet watched it. Question: regarding not getting the Rambo sequels released on 4k; maybe they didn't own the rights? I ask because I would love to have Scream 4 on 4K steelbook. I have all the others on 4k steelbook, but the rights apparently are not available.
I would have bought the Rambo set because I missed it. I just bought those only two reissues and still missed the middle chapters. Dumb enough from the studio.

Yeah Ken, that Saw set is just like the CBS DVD sets of Star Trek and Twilight Zone I have, where a billion discs are crammed and stacked haphazardly in those cradles, making it an absolute nightmare to deal with. The chances of scratching every disc you take out of these stupid things is very high - and, as you said, it makes it nearly impossible to find something that may be buried on a disc deep in those trays. I'm definitely skipping that Saw set.
I know where When Evil Lurks will be on my shelf, it'll be with the other W titles. Heck, it'll be the only title without words on the spine. It'll be super easy to find. lol

In his review for the boxset he said he isn’t holding that against this release since all studios do that since the beginning of home video. Halloween has done it. He owns Halloween 1, 2, and 3 as a complete collection. Jurassic Park has done it John Wick has certainly done it…. Exact quotes I have memorized… fast forward to this video… he knocks this release for that reason. Not sure why SAW gets bashed and not any other series when they do the exact same thing.

As much as I loathe the case that they used for the Saw set, I saw a 10-film set as inevitable, given that they also did 7-film, 8-film, and 9-film sets before, and with those sets, the first 7 films were crammed onto 3 Blu-rays/4 DVDs with no extras. Meanwhile, the 10-film set has the movies on individual discs, the 3D version of Saw 7, and the special edition DVDs of the first three films that have extras that were never on Blu-ray. The set has nothing new, but it has everything a completist would want from the Saw films. If only they put it in a better case...
By far the TCM plastic chainsaw takes the cake. What were they thinking.
The quality of the movie is not really the reason to release it on 4k or not. I am sure there are hundreds of movies on 4k with imdb rate worse than the Robocop remake.

New to your vids but have you seen the horrible DVD release of Stargate SG-1 that had the 3D gate on the box? It's old but one of the worst sets I have, as all the disks are in cardboard sleeves that ensure the chance they get scratched to heck every time they're removed! That Criterion 40 looks like similar packaging!
Some dumb releases I can think of is, I Know What You Did Last Summer getting a steelbook for the Blu-ray version and no steelbook for the 4K version. Also, raising the price for the Deadpool and Wolverine 4K steelbook to $65 was anither dumb move smh.
I'm beginning to think Criterion made that set specifically for me. Surprisingly I only had 2 of the films so at 50% off it was actually a good deal.

I dunno that Saw set looks awesome with all those films included, Blu rays etc in a compact package. I'd tape the disc hubs gently to keep discs from falling out and be happy with all the content.

Gimmick packaging is stupid. The Third Man - gorgeous box set. But the whole music box is crap, it worked twice then never again. No response from publisher when I wrote to them or tweet them. 10:59 the emphasis you put right here hurts me Ken. Ouch. I’ve been trying to get that video up to 14k man. I watch it all the time. I love this release. I love the disc art, art cards, box art, I love how the disc are reminiscent of a puzzle. It’s fun. I love the SAW films. I take no issue with this release, it’s the 20th anniversary it’s a special release and I’m not sure if we will even get that 11th entry. Mine isn’t broken and I use mine almost everyday. I shuffle through my discs just fine and no scratches. I’ve watched all the special features for all 23 discs to celebrate the 20th anniversary. I catalogued each feature in my “spiral” note”book” and I adore this particular release.
The set seems real cool, but I haven't had the best of luck with this sort of packaging. My Twilight Zone Blu-ray set is very similar and while I don't have any scratches on my discs (Blu-rays aren't prone to that like DVDs) they fall out and you do have to take out several to get to the one you want. Still I'm happy it works for you and enjoy the set 😎
@@TheTonyahawk Absolutely and yeah I can understand it doesn’t work for many people. I think I’ve just become so accustomed to it that it doesn’t bother me too much. I know Ken was really struggling to get those discs out in his review. It can be a hassle but I throughly enjoy the puzzle aspect this gives me. Even knowing which disc is what is part of the fun for me. Totally understand why this boxset gets the hate though. Thank you yeah it’s everything I would want from SAW so I’m a happy camper 🧩🎮🌀
That Trainspotting 4K packaging was definitely the dumbest of anything I bought. I’m thinking of making a custom case so it can go better with my T2:Trainspotting 4K.
I thought a lot of the Walmart steelbooks were dumb, some stores still have a lot left over. A lot of the dumbness is the pricing, like $25 is too much for a blu-ray only steelbook (Mill Creek). And I’d actually like to get the Cutthroat Island 4K, but not for $35! How are you gonna overprice one of the most notorious flops of the 1990s? And I thought Shivers was an odd choice for a Vestron steelbook. It’s too obscure, and how are you going to put it out as a steelbook when you could barely move the slipcover, which I already have? I love David Cronenberg, but not that much. They should’ve just put out more copies of Maximum Overdrive, that’s one I don’t have at all.
Similar to Trainspotting... Those special edition A24 releases drive me nuts. I got the Talking Heads Stop Making Sense 4k and I have nowhere to put it. I just kind of lay it on top of my shelf

Trainspotting has atrocious packaging, I spent $25 for a custom Amaray.
There are thousands of people who are being introduced to the Criterion Collection every year, and the 40th anniversary boxset is designed for them. You don't have to know the company, just the movies that they released. Also, while on sale, it was $10 per movie. There's nothing stupid about buying a boxset that's designed for you.
I agree. Incredible value for new collector looking to get started with the Criterion Collection if bought @ 50% sale.
Somebody just getting into a company is unlikely to buy their greatest hits boxset, rather, they can just buy the titles that interest them for far cheaper and leave out the ones they don’t care about.

They did Twilight the same as the Saw release. Stacked disc and all. I didn’t like how the blu rays where but I was able to stack it where only the main movie was shown.
Contrary to what you think of a film, it's never a good look to call something dumb without every giving it a try. ROBOCOP remake has its fans and though obviously inferior to the original it does several things better then the original.

This felt dumb at the time, or maybe just a bit disappointing, but when I opened up my Mexico 4K Trilogy box set and found that only one of the movies was on 4K, that felt pretty dumb to me.
I get that with the other two movies there was probably no point in doing them on 4K based on how they were filmed, but it was still something of a let down when it happened.
It wasn’t a secret that the other two movies were blu-ray only.

yeah! it's silly for The Texas Chainsaw Box set, I even think the 4k Collectors Edition of The Conversation was a bit silly too, as you get a Cassette Tape of it soundtrack, which wouldn't be used, as they should have included a CD with a pretend Cassette Tape instead, for that price, which was £59.99, in the UK.
I bought the remake of RoboCop because I liked the movie and I saw the original when I was ten but I didn't remember much of it. When I saw the remake I liked it and I went and rewatched the original and loved it too.
Yeah, I totally agree on that Criterion box set. I have collected a lot of Criterion's and why would anyone want to buy that? Like you say, how would it serve people like me who already have a lot of those titles in the box set and for a newbie, wouldn't it be better for them to slowly dip their toes in the waters of Criterion titles so they can get a taste of the movies before buying more of them? The audacity to talk smack about a movie he hasn't even seen is wild to me. I actually like the Robocop remake. I heard people talk down about it for years until I saw it. However, I enjoyed the more serious take it took on Robocop source material. It reaches into borderline horror territory at times. And how can forget about that absolute star-studded cast the remake has. He really should watch a movie and form his opinion and not hop on the hate bandwagon before deciding to put it in a list of "DUMBEST" releases.

I honestly thought about Chainsaw cus I'm a collector. But common sense prevailed. I knew it sucked. If it had more stuff then maybe but it gives nothing. I with you, I spent on Neverending Story and I'm so much happier with it. I believe it's the best restoration I've ever seen of a film I've always loved.

The criterion 40 disc set i believe is all bluray. Buts its a pretty good price at $10 a disc. Usually its $20. But its gor very few people, which for a celebration sucks.

I don't mind the Saw set. I had Saws 1 through 7, as individual blu-rays. So, I was getting 3 movies I didn't already own, and the box set takes up less shelf space than the 7 blu-rays (which I then got rid of.)
As for the Trainspotting 4k, I just put it with my mediabooks. I have a shelf that's just mediabooks and slightly odd-shaped cases. Trainspotting fits in just fine there.
By the way, does anyone remember the old Back to the Future Trilogy set? possibly the first time it came out on blu-ray? It had to come with instructions on how to take the discs out, and foam pads between the layers. To protect the discs? So the spacing was right? I don't know what the were thinking.
That was dumb. I got the next Trilogy release (30th anniversary?,) and gave away the older one. Not my problem anymore.

As far as Rambo goes, I have the individual 4K's with the slipcovers, and that's good enough for me.
That Rambo Steelbook boxset is nice, and it was one of the last boxsets sold at Bestbuy before they stopped carrying physical media.
But, I'm totally fine not owning that boxset because it means I don't have to have the abomination that is "Rambo: Last Blood" in my collection.

I did get the Robocop remake, but it was bought used on blu-ray for only about $3, because I was curious, and I had seen Joel Kinneman in other things and liked him. Have not yet watched it.
Question: regarding not getting the Rambo sequels released on 4k; maybe they didn't own the rights? I ask because I would love to have Scream 4 on 4K steelbook. I have all the others on 4k steelbook, but the rights apparently are not available.

Yeah Ken, that Saw set is just like the CBS DVD sets of Star Trek and Twilight Zone I have, where a billion discs are crammed and stacked haphazardly in those cradles, making it an absolute nightmare to deal with.
The chances of scratching every disc you take out of these stupid things is very high - and, as you said, it makes it nearly impossible to find something that may be buried on a disc deep in those trays.
I'm definitely skipping that Saw set.
I know where When Evil Lurks will be on my shelf, it'll be with the other W titles. Heck, it'll be the only title without words on the spine. It'll be super easy to find. lol

In his review for the boxset he said he isn’t holding that against this release since all studios do that since the beginning of home video. Halloween has done it. He owns Halloween 1, 2, and 3 as a complete collection. Jurassic Park has done it John Wick has certainly done it…. Exact quotes I have memorized… fast forward to this video… he knocks this release for that reason. Not sure why SAW gets bashed and not any other series when they do the exact same thing.
