Nothing about color meanings here, just the reason they came to be....

Exactly, I am assuming that Kano used white to symbolize purity. From a practical standpoint, white was used so that you can easily identify if someone is bleeding and that you can tell who has washed there gi.
Blue was later added for competition yes, but they might have adopted blue in particular as it is also a color that symbolizes purity. Blue is a very popular color for clothes in Japan. BJJ adopted many traditions from Judo.

Charlie white in ancient samurai times means that the warriors were ready to die

dont forget in the 2000s gi colours were just getting out of hand so IBJJF said there can only be like 3 colours. no more purple and red and tie dye in comp.

Gimme a patchless white gi. The patches at my school are ass ugly and make the gi's look horrible.

So if you don't compete that means you're not allowed to wear anything but the white gi?

Wear whatever color you want. Some gyms are super picky, but most are pretty chill. I have a blue and black, my son's is camo and my daughter's is purple. Our gym doesn't care as long as you don't rock another school's patches all over your gi
