- In today's video I go through my gym bag and show you the things I bring with me to BJJ training. This video is in response to a lot of questions I've gotten from a lot of White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu who are curious about what they should bring with them to training.
I include the normal stuff that you're probably familiar with. But I also include a few things thats maybe you don't know about or didn't think of.
If you see me talk about the Stnky bag in the video and want to check it out. Look them up at stnky.us/ and use the promo code Chewjitsu at checkout for a discount.
Gameness bag in the video: amzn.to/3w1FVgS
A solid carb powder for hard workouts: amzn.to/3m2goQk
Tea tree oil: amzn.to/3d2dW84
Hope the video helps!

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY. - Спорт
Got my 6th class ever tonight. I love it
Edit: 3.5mo later I'm a 2 stripe white belt. I'm so fulfilled right now with my choice to start
Edit: 1yr 1mo later I've been a 4 stripe for 10mo now, promo ceremony is in 2 weeks, wish me luck
Edit: I GOT MY BLUE BELT!!!
Edit: 3-4mo since I got my blue belt, still training atleast 3days per week, sometimes more if I have time. I now help out newer white belts with some moves that are challenging. Love every second
Edit: 2.5 years in. Still blue belt. Still very very much in love with it, but have no time to train. I go every chance I get, but I'm at maybe twice a month. Can't wait to get back
Edit: I'm back to 3days a week. 1stripe blue belt now. Nvr give up even if u get the blues!
Keep going man.
Good stuff keep pushing, I’m working on my fourth month 💪💪
We all wish we could go back to that point (no matter what they say). Enjoy, and welcome to the Fellowship!
Im 9 months in brother, it’s been life changing, have fun
2 months in. One of the best decisions I’ve made in my adult life.
Keys to defeating Chewie - bad breath and long finger nails. Noted
Check and mate
screw Basic hygiene
🤣🤣
Might as well not shower prior to training either lol
Don’t forget the pee pee/poo poo germs
I'm an adult but "pee-pee, poo-poo germs" still hits hard.
So true.
😂
Harder than a 350 purple belt knee slide my dude
Always funny hearing big burley savages use that type of language haha
@@davidharos8867 ugh Id tap 😂😂 lmao im playing dang that hurts even when i did it with a blue belt thats 30 lbs heavier
I’m a Female w/ long hair, so these are some things I keep in my bag:
-variety of hair ties (tiny plastic ones, skinny standard ones, and scrunchies). Depending on how I’m doing my hair, I usually need more than one hair tie.
-hairbrush
-good sports bra sans zipper or metal parts.
-makeup remover wipes and general body wipes. (I come after work and don’t want to feel gross or leave makeup on my training partner’s gi)
-basic first aid kit
-feminine hygiene products
-towel for sweat (while at gym)
Car/home
-towel/seat cover in my car for my cloth seats (no shower at my gym right now)
-at home I use a pedicure sponge with tea tree oil on my feet, I also use a tea tree oil leave in conditioner in my hair.
All good recommendations! Do you have a brand you like for sports bras? I want to buy new ones but it's been increasingly hard to find high support ones w/o zippers or metal.
@@emschlef I don’t have a specific brand since I tend to get a lot of mine from TJ Maxx or similar stores. However, I look for thick straps for extra support, high necklines/no cute front V detail, and good overall compression.
Different bras are optimized for different sports and body types, but for me, I want it to be comfortable, but also functional. I really like the high neckline sports bras because if I’m not wearing a typical rash guard, I don’t have to worry about showing cleavage or having my partner’s hand getting stuck somewhere I don’t want it. They’re also good bc they tend to ~flatten~ things out more than other lower-neck varieties, which I find is more convenient/comfortable when I’m rolling. Hope that helps!
Tea tree oil kills lots of gross stuff. Including kitty cats. So be careful. I love it but have to be careful of poisoning the wife's cat.
also, if you're a female... painkillers! you might save your own, or even better your training parter's training session with them. Cause you can't really train with a person who's in pain...
@@emschlef Senita athletics! Affordable and so comfortable. I train in the Sarah, the strappy, and the Lotus.
Gum/mints are good, but I keep a travel toothbrush/toothpaste when I roll.
Underrated comment here! After rolling with some smelt breaths, your partners will appreciate you even though they don’t mention it
I have a small notebook and pencil in my bag used mostly after class to write down those little details that complete a technique sort of like a training log. Super helpful when I first started.
I do the same, but wait until the next morning, and write it down during breakfast. that way the details are still there, but it's also a good memory exercise.
This! Yes. Composition book here. I just finished my 5th day (ever) and I already noticed I needed this. Also, if I'm scrolling through UA-cam (like this), I'll write down things I want to ask about like, What is a Kimura? Asked that question today! Lol, perhaps I shouldn't have! *rubs shoulder*
Guys I can't tell you what to do, but a really good mouthpiece is the best investment you can get. My teeth are already crooked I don't think my parents, girlfriend, or dentist would appreciate me showing up with missing teeth.
I accidentally chipped two people's teeth in one training session one day. I immediately went and bought a good mouth piece.
Any suggestions?
sisu
I asked my dentist what I should get. He’s a bit of a smart ass, which I appreciate most of the time. He said “a good mouth guard might be a hundred bucks but a new tooth can be a couple thousand, don’t be stupid”. That really stuck with me lol
@@FrMatthewharrington Best mouth Piece ever
I don't even do BJJ, I do Judo, but alot of this stuff still applies, like the nail clippings, my heel got sliced by a toenail, chest scratched by a fingernail, the slides and pee-pee poopoo germs thing still applies, crazy how this stuff carries over and how similar yet different these martial arts are.
As someone that may have to go directly to the gym after work without going home first, I keep some natural baby wipes in my bag. I wear leather work boots all day long, so I feel better giving my feet a wipe down before getting on the mat. Just to kind of help with any kind of smell.
That's really considerate of you! And a really good idea. I use alcohol hand sanitizer to do the same thing. But baby wipes are a good shout!
Never thought about it before.. just rubbed the skin of my feet with a towel. Your way is better!
I will start doing this. I'm in the exact same boat and I can smell my feet when I take off my boots for training. If I can smell them, so can everyone else. Great idea!
I've been tempted to go to class after work but thought it be a no no since I do construction
I keep a styptic pencil in my bag for the occasional minor cut. People don't usually like being bled on.
They still have those? I'm on it!
I use super glue
@@Chewjitsu good choice
I actually used to put all the stinky, after roll, clothes in one of those plastic bags they give you when you buy stuff at the stores before I put them in my gym bag. Worked great, too.
the stinkwave when you open the bag tho.. jesus
@@AxaFin 100%! I wanted to call in a biohazard team to assist me.
I've worked out on traditional heavy bags ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxp9-sf95nqfjey-uyzxUzQ7m9MXRPK1BE a spherical stuffed "wrecking ball" bag, and now this thing. What I like about it is that it has the heft to stay largely in place so I'm not chasing it around. It's tall enough to allow for headshots and body shots, but it's short enough to give an uppercut somewhere to land. I'm very happy so far. Filling it was a bit of a cluster. For top-offs, I've learned that you can screw the supplied nozzle onto any basic plastic water bottle. I can't speak to durability as I've only had it a week.
Extra set of clothes! Nothing crazy, just a shirt and pants. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go somewhere else after training and needed some clothes to wear!
God bless! So glad you brought up the Stnky bag, been looking for a solution like this for my sweaty Gi.
Other essentials:
- a spare underarm deodorant stick
- a mini first aid kit: bandaid, liquid skin, joint tape. If not for you, then for your classmates if the gym's kit is missing anything.
- ear guards, in case your ears are really sore from a previous practice
- spare mouthguard
- spare clean underwear: depending on how hot and sweaty your day was, it might be considerate to put on some fresh undies under your gi pants right before practice.
spare mouthguard?
@@alanmusa7143 ?
I keep a couple of compression bandages in mine. A couple of times I've had elbows or knees tweaked a little bit, and sometimes a good compression bandage can make the difference between finishing the class and having to sit it out. Also makes it feel better the next day if you get it wrapped up immediately.
Something you've talked about previously that has become a must have for my gym bag is a lacrosse ball to work out any muscular knots, etc. from training! Thanks for the advice as always Chewy, great video!
Nice! Great thing to have on hand!
I recommend soap and a small towel. After having some minor staph infections (impetigo) on my face I now will try to wash my face and get everything off while I am still sweaty and my pores are open. If there's a bit of time between finishing class and showering, try to take a bit of a longer shower to allow pores to re-open and wash out the grime you picked up. The type of soap isn't as important as washing your skin out thoroughly.
Bingo, I wash hands and face (and dry them!) before I leave, then take a good hot shower with soap when I get home. Knock on wood, nothing nasty yet.
Great stuff. I have a small bottle of sanitized (pre-pandemic) as well as a few spare contacts and solution. I probably went 6-7 years of judo/bjj training before I figured out to grab the contact stuff. Another thing I carry is a lacrosse ball for trigger pointing muscles. And tape. A lot of tape.
Hey there, binge watching your videos, my son (who’s 11) started 6 mths ago and myself (45) just started BJJ month ago… I also put Vick’s vapor inhaler, it opens up sinuses really well, I have inflamed sinuses sometimes & it’s really hard to breath especially all crumpled & folded up, so this is a tremendous help, thx for your videos, greatly appreciated
Happy to say I had some of these the rest r now on the shopping list. Love the BJJ community
Awesome. I carry most of the essentials you spoke of. Need to check out the tea tree oil and reverse grip extenders. One thing I carry is anti-acids. It happened more when I was new, but when I don't time my meals right with training I can get pretty bad heartburn.
I am new to bjj and this video helped a lot! Looking forward to this new journey!
I try to put a foot long sandwhich or chicken pasta in my gym bag as a between gym meal.
I'm a newcomer to all this. I really appreciate your videos man. You're very welcoming and you have a wealth of information for people who simply don't know anything. Bless you man! I start my first day of bjj tomorrow. I think I am ready.
Other essentials for me:
1. basic first aid kit (gauze, bandaids, q-tips, polysporin, vaseline) for minor cuts/abrasions so that they don't interfere with your training or make the mat unsanitary.
2. tensor bandage(s) in case of sprain and/or any brace you have from past injurie(s) in case of re-injury
3. at least 3 hair ties (if you have long hair), 2 for my braids, one in case someone else forgot theirs
4. a snack. In case you push yourself too hard or miss a meal, have something sugary to pick yourself up, and keep you going after training
5. a hand towel. my gym doesn't have showers, it's important to wipe the sweat away so you don't freeze on your way home.
My teacher says that safety is always worth splurging on. Thanks for the mint idea :)
As someone who rolled only 6ams for years. It became just a regular habit to hit the mouthwash before heading out in the morning, made me feel better and I'm sure my partners appreciated it.
I have a lot of the same things. I keep nail clippers in my car. I also keep BCAA and EAA both in my bag. The BCAA doesn't have dexterous. The stinky bag is kind of cool and would make a welcome edition. I will also sometimes keep a shaker cup.
Liquid band-Aid. It’s the best for stopping the bleeding and you can keep rolling.
That finger extension tool is genius.
I keep two kinds of different massage rollers in my gym bag as they’re helpful before and after BJJ. I have one for my lower back and one for my forearms as I have bad tendinitis.
Back when I was training, I noticed that different gyms had different "smells" that would transfer to your gi/no-gi clothes and, then, to the rest of your clothes. It was getting to the point that my wife had begun insisting I stop training. It wasn't MY smell because I knew what that was from years of competitive sports, Karate/Kung Fu/Tae Kwon Do, and weightlifting.
This was new from when I started BJJ. I switched gyms for a short time and the smell changed as well. It seems to be a heavy-contact sports thing. BUT I found a cure...
It was simple enough. I started using OxyClean in the washer (a full scoop with every load) and, after about a week or two all the smells were gone. I feel pretty confident that it was the OxyClean because we forgot to buy some for about a week and the smell returned.
Maybe this isn't an issue for anyone else, but I'm a firm believer that this will work for others. I readily acknowledge that I may just be abnormally sensitive to this and it isn't an issue for anyone else, but it DEFINITELY works for me!
Anyway, my $.02...
I also have my mouth-guard and a set of knee pads (I recently got bruises and swelling on the inside of my knees, I think it is more of a beginner thing though, until the knees are conditioned for jiu jitsu).
I also carry a mouth guard. It helps a lot from getting canker sores.
Glad i found this channel. Great advice! That shirt is awesome BTW.
This was a good episode; thanks. Comments were also good.
A small foam roller, baseball, LAX ball, really anything to assist in stretching for your warmup or cool down
The tea tree oil tip after the shower is solid advice!
A pumice stone is good to have, too. Not necessarily to keep in your bag, but at home. The bottoms of your feet can become dry, cracked, hard, and scratchy. Which could scrape or even cut your rolling partner. A good trick for softer feet is to smother your feet in Vaseline, put on heavy socks, go night night, and the next morning your feet will be a lot softer. Now, I will admit I’m super anal about my feet health, but can’t hurt, right? By the way, your channel is one of my faves, and you do a excellent job of explaining all things BJJ while being relatable, compassionate, and humorous. 10/10 Will watch again. 😊
Thanks for the video brother. Bless ya!
I would add a nail file to smooth off any edges of the nails that can catch on skin or Gi material.
That Stinky bag is just what I need! Always felt weird washing my big gym bag everytime.
Very cool,, different and informative!!,, thx🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great video man, thanks
I usually keep some alcohol wipes in my bag as well as some glucose tablets. Good for the same things as the dextrose powder he mentioned but can also be used if someone in the gym is a hypoglycemic diabetic.
I don't take the entire bin of BCAAs, but I use a little container with a pre-measured amount for post-training. I also take 2 bottles for water. If I'm doing multiple classes, I will usually go through both.
Additionally, I usually keep a towel from slowtide, some shower products, deodorant, clean pair of chonies and wipes for getting clean post-training. I have a 40 minute drive home and don't want my car smelling like mat funk. The quicker you get to the shower, the less chance of ringworm, etc.
Did you mention a towel to wipe off your head and face between rolls? You’d be amazed how much sweat gets absorbed in your hair. But when you’re bald and shave your head like me it’s just nice to wipe the sweat off between rolls before it drips on your training partners
me too, fellow follicle challenged lol
I feel you brother. For some reason I always seem to lose control of my sweat aiming ability when I'm rolling with one of the girls at my gym. I guess she is just unlucky and I always hit her square in the face!!
Ive been carrying liquid skin called New Skin. Really like it since band-aids dont stay on.
New skin+ FABRIC bandaid+ athletic tape is the magic combo
@@BobBob-il2ku what do you mean "FABRIC Brandaid?"
@@Morganwmahan a normal bandaid
Just bought nail clippers, I knew I was missing something thanks!
Linex is one thing me and almost evryone at my gym uses is Linex. Its amazing for if you have any kind of muscle pain.
I've been training for 6 months and at this point I'm afraid to ask
6 months is nothing. Just ask
^What he said
6 months ain't nothing
I have a little pocket in my bag that has some band-aids of various sizes, some antiseptic spray, gauze, and some coban wrap. I've seen some people catch some scratches or wounds that end their day because of the blood and I like to have this available so they can clean and dress something and keep training of they want to.
I have head gear, mouth guard, sweat towels, gum and mints, and some Dude wipes (wet wipes, basically). Towels are great but sometimes of you need to wipe your eyes or wipe something up/off your body, it's nice to have something sanitary and disposable.
Triple antibiotic ointment is another one that always stays in my bag... Any time I have a little spot that looks like it could be something, I put that on right away. Speaking from experience, Staph infections are NO fun.
Oh I wasn’t aware this could happen
I use the alphabandz they're pretty awesome for exactly what your talking about. I do Kali also...there's a lot of grip action going on in both.
I also use Lysol Landry Sanitizer liquid in with the wash for all my gi and Nogi stuff.
I'm usually going straight to the gym after work, so I pack some easy clothes to throw on for the drive home. Extra t-shirt, gym shorts if it's warm out, sweats if it is cold and gym towel. In a ziplock bag, I keep antibacterial skin wipes, hand sanitizer, and a small first aid kit. I also keep a traveling toothbrush. It might be weird but I always brush my teeth before class.
Awesome video great information shared.
Hey, how r yah. So what I started mine out with is a basic beginners style Reebok unisex recyclable bag black colored and so far I put a set of shin guards in there and I'm waiting on my no-gi (rash guards etc.) gear & sparring gloves to come in still. Next on my list is combat prescription eyewear cuz I'm poor eyesight and am a more confident striker so I'll really only need those for that reason in my opinion; just would like the xtra aid I guess. Next I'm going to get these things you explained here! I got about a month left of building my gym bag with everything I need left as much as possible, please wish me luck I am being serious about doing bjj I am 28 years old am kinda l8 I feel but i know I got your support I been watching your videos soon. Thank You.
I keep gum, my gi, my no gi stuff, my inhaler (I get asthma really bad and I often need it right in the middle or right after warm ups), a bottle of core water (it’s got electrolites and it’s just really solid water for working out), mouth piece for when i’m rolling, deodorant and nail clippers.
New to JJ ( about 5 weeks in) besides what was mentioned, a bandana, a roll of KT tape and a mouth guard
Thank You... Really Cool Video!!!!
Aways great advices coach 👏👌🏼
Tea tree is a beast man it’s awesome as hell
I keep a towel in my bag. Definitely a game changer.
A power band to stretch and warm up my old shoulders.
Great quality footage! Did u change cameras? If so which one do you use now?
-Minty gum to prevent rancid breath
-Ankle brace from RDX because I messed up my ankle during a failed Muay Thai stance switch
-Hair ties. When I teach kids, without fail, someone needs a hair tie. I'm on my second pack of 30 hair ties in the past 6 months
-Elastic bandage roll because sprains happen easily, as mentioned above
-Silica gel packets so my bag can dry more quickly after I remove my sweaty gear
-Mouth guard. I use a Venum one now, but I'll be upgrading to a thin Sisu mouthguard soon.
-Sometimes but not always Defense Body Wipes, which has tea tree oil. Or something similar in case I need to be somewhere before I get home and shower.
Awesome info!!👍
Had my first class today 💪🏾
Baby wipes are good to have before stepping on the mat.
How’s it going?
@@calebhumphrey6331 It's going great thanks for asking. Still trying to get used to people sitting on me haha
I am a newbie, but I definitely keep a bottle of NewSkin and some Ball Spray in my gym bag. The NewSkin is great for Mat Burns (I may have gotten that advice from you)
They sell a combination bag and laundry bag and wash bag for nurses and doctors scrubs. You can find it on Amazon and that’s a good way to take away or store your dirty stuff and encourage you to wash it.
Lol he literally had it in the video.
Good stuff. As I approach my blue belt and 40 years of age may I suggest BioFreeze roll on as well. Great video.
I didn't know this was a video for my wife until I saw the bag 😂. Its so true.
I keep my old glasses in my gym bag. I take off my glasses whenever I'm drilling or rolling, but I usually have to put them in a spot where someone might step on them. If I don't have my glasses, I can't drive home, so I try to keep a spare in my bag or in my car.
I keep hair ties whether I have my hair long or short. Someone always needs a hair tie so I've got everyone covered! I keep not just nail clippers, but a nail kit with tweezers and small scissors too. In my car I keep mints, but also have my inspiration attached to my dash with velcro - a patch to remember someone I know who committed suicide due to job-related stress. Manage your stress and try that new hobby, sport, activity you've been putting off because you will "get to it later". My coworker doesn't have a later.
I always keep a small travel size aerosol deodorant spray…just in case i need a quick freshen up before class…i hate to stink or smell others. Great video…thank you!
I just got started with BJJ but I like to keep a roll on stick of bio freeze in my bag. I also, as a diabetic, keep glucose tablets or glucose gummies in my bag along with a dedicated meter for checking my blood sugar. The reason I say it is dedicated to my BJJ bag is so that the only time it comes out of the bag is before and after class and should I need it during training.
Guys, don't forget Analgesic Liniment (icyhot, biofreeze, etc.). Any time you have some sort of pain, maybe it's from jiu jitsu or something else, it's always nice to roll/spray some of that onto the affected area for relief. I have one in my gym bag and one in my Jiu Jitsu bag
I do this, too....
Stinky bag! Genius!!!
Defense body wipes if your gym doesn't have showers, a small first aid kit with second skin bandaids, anti bac ointment, and compression bands for my forearms post class.
Tape is a must. I burnt all ten of my fingers that I couldn't type at my morning job back then for at least two weeks.
Imagine Burnt toe knuckles then getting in the shower
@@sickbrwnrice1291 don’t need to imagine. I have the pain burned into my memory
@@Bubba55595 lmaooo for real tho
@@sickbrwnrice1291 I kinda like it
I once tore a rotator cuff after being slammed by a new guy and couldn’t lift my arm at all...made my forklift job very difficult as I couldn’t operate to lifting mechanism.
Your Channel is fantastic
I carry a plastic garbage bag for used stuff but I use a mesh mummy bag so in case I forget to bring one my stuff can air out and doesnt sit there getting gross
And I always bring a phone tripod because you never know when someone wants to take a random group picture and you'll be the hero every time
Mouthguard is a good one to keep in the gym bag
Great video
liquid bandage, use it for mat burn. The stuff works better than anything else
That stinky bag thing sound really cool.
Travel size Vaseline that I dab on top of my feet before rolling to prevent mat burn. And 2 mouth guards!
I think something maybe overlooked is a nail file. Freshly cut nails, even though they’re short, are super sharp. A nail file will dull them out, just my two cents.
Looking healthier from when I started watching you. 👍👍
love you chew,. come roll in aus !!!
I've been training almost 2 months, only woman at my BJJ classes (which doesn't bother me in the slightest). Some of these things below I carry guys could use ofc. I think the last one is very important and everyone needs! :)
- Gi + No Gi gear
- Athletic tape
- Deodorant
- Mini first aid kit
- Female hygiene products
- Hair ties
- Mouth Guard
As a guy with long hair I agree Hair ties are a must! Just makes sure they're metal-free ones.
@@Jono793 Yeah absolutely! I use the thick solid band ones that don’t use metal or plastic or anything like that. Much more longevity from them, right hold.
@Ina Pahmeier no one gives a damn sorry bot
Digging the new camera 📷👌
Thanks!
I think emergency glucose tablets (or a roll of smarties candy if you prefer) also is super good to have in a bag, ESPECIALLY if you're diabetic and you feel low blood sugar coming on. Nearly passed out during class before because of blood sugar, so always be prepared!
That extension tool is sounds good for electrical work
Maybe I missed you mentioning it, but I keep a small first aid kit in my bag. Never know when you might need a bandaid or some IBU Profen.
In my gym bag: the souls of my opponents!
sucks covid still very big here in the Philippines. Was really getting into bjj around 6mos in but then everything happened march 2020. tried the bjj at home thing but nowhere near as stimulating so for the last year just did other stuff. really hoping to roll again soon
Shower gel, gumshield and deep freeze spray 😁
Liquid bandaid is also very valuable
