  • Trunk opens too fast, spring broken. This is a do it yourself video on how to do the replacement. Car is a 2011 BMW F10. Used an equivalent spring purchased online.

Thanks so much for mentioning to remove that mini clip on the joint head. Was wrecking my brain trying to figure out why it didn't immediately snap in. Once removed , it snapped in no issues.

The right side passenger trunk tension spring is to smooth open the trunk (avoids hitting ur face), the Left side spring Helps you close the trunk (as you lower the trunk to close it in a normal way, if you let it go or it slips of ur fingers when its down about to close, the trunk will stay there slowly and wont spring up suddenly.

thanks for the video, i bought my spring off ebay and it wasnt a bmw original, i had problems at the rear end i.e. the ball and socket end. the socket end of the spring was slightly different to the original in that it had a small piece of spring steel on one side presumably to make it more secure and stop it popping off when in use. i found it impossible to push the spring onto the ball in situ and was going to give up but noticed that the ball was actually threaded into the bodywork of the car and was quite easy to remove. i used pipe pliers to then clamp the spring socket end and the ball together and it popped in ok, i used grease on the ball and socket and put a spare nut on the thread of the ball to protect the thread.(it would have been much easier with a vice but i dont have one at the minute) , it was then quite easy to install the spring and screw the ball end back into the body and its working fine, cheers derek

Your video has an important tip - to remove the spring clip next to the absorber ball joint end.
Without removing the spring clip, it is next to impossible to fit the absorber onto the ball attachment! I was afraid that hammering the absorber end will either crack the absorber joint or something else. TQ so much.

Thanks for the video! Anyway is it enough to just change the right one? I've just learned there's also a spring on the left side

For my case, it was enough to fix the issue.

Good video. It's a little tricky getting the old springs off and the new ones on. Note that the driver and passenger side springs are different lengths. The passenger side (right) is about 1/2 longer. Makes a big difference in trying to get these installed.

Change both spring on both sides, about $100 total for both BMW original and Lifetime Warranty! - FCPeuro

At the 9 second time, the part # is stated in there.I got it from Amazon.
To answer your second question, @LaloMan had a comment on below to change both sides, which makes sense.
