Heart breaking to see a plant die. 😞 We learn though. If I remember correctly, you got that Astrophytum when it was raining or the plants were just watered heavily. I suspect the rotting was caused by fungus. When Daz and I were just new growing them, we had about a dozen Asterias that rotted off one by one. We were very puzzled because the potting mix was very porous and we were very careful in watering. If the plant had been infected by fungus even from the nursery and we unknowingly just repotted it without treating it first, it will always be a losing battle. So what I do now whenever i get a new plant is to clean it first and soak it in a fungicide diluted in water for at least 15 mins before potting it up. Refrain from watering for a week. So far so good. Thanks for sharing, Ana. Ingat lagi sis. ❤️🌵🙏🌸🌺🥰
Yeah those asterias we got already had issues, just took a little while to manifest, still have one left from that batch that made it and is doing well thankfully. Whenever I have cactus rot it’s usually after their first watering after dormancy, like with my Turbinicarpus swobodea. Such a shame when this happens, but it’s just one of the many challenges growing these plants. Thank you for sharing this informative video with us Ana, from Edith & myself, stay safe and have a wonderful day and upcoming weekend 😊🌵☀️🌺🌸🌼🏜☕️
Oh Edith! You have a good memory. Yes, I bought this just after we had rains here during the winter. And that nursery did not have a roof on top of the cactus shelves. Although when I reported it, I did not see any signs of rotting. But yes, it could just be starting at that time. I am interested in that anti-fungal dip that you do . Do you mean it won’t burn the roots? I will message you on IG. Salamat sis! 😃🌵☕️
Thank you Daz. Why do we always learn the hard way? 😩 From the extent of the rotting, it looks like it has been there a long time and it just took a while to show itself outside the cactus.
Oh no Ana, so sorry to see your Astro nudum has rot, I have lost a few Atros in the past too, and never knew what caused it, its so gutting when we lose plants we love. This is such a helpful video for so many growers especially with showing if it could be rot or not, and because the lower brown scarring at the base is commonly seen on many healthy cacti it can be worrying for some new growers that may think its rot, and your video is so helpful in showing the difference between rot or not, and brilliant tips with the brown spots on cacti too, thanks so much for sharing this wonderful and very informative video Ana, and sending you tons of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a fantastic Friday today XXXX
The dreaded root rot strikes! Uggh. It makes me feel like I failed. But then again, we learn, move on and still continue the hobby. 😉 Yes, I get questions on the browning of cacti so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to show them the real root rot vs the not. Cheers Lyn and I’m looking forward to your buds opening very soon! 😃🌺🌸
Yeah sometimes you will never know what causes it to do so. Lost a few in my over 50 years of growing cactus & succulents. I have the same euphorbia. It got a spot about an inch from the top. I watched as it started to progress. I cut the top three inches below the tip. Laid the infected piece aside so I could watch it , and it shriveled up quickly!!! The plant remains perfectly healthy. Glad I cut that piece away cause it would have killed it! Yeah I don't mind a little "bark" on the old plants, it's natural. Look at cacti growing in the desert, they all get bark as they age. Perfectly normal. From Morris park in the Ozarks have a great evening!!!!Peace,Love,Plants!!!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌿
I can't tell how important this video is! thank you allot Ana for sharing these insights. i just discovered your videos a month ago. its so relaxed, honest and with allot of passion.
It’s always so gory when this happens. So sad. Interesting to see what the situation was inside though, thanks for showing us the good and the bad. 🌵🌵🌵😳
Ughh. The dreaded root rot strikes again! 😖 Can’t help but blame myself but we learn, move on and the hobby still continues. Thanks so much for your kind words. 🙂
Oh man, I'm sorry to see that. And I just had the same thing happen to me with one of my new ones. It literally went down hill over night. I am very upset. I'm glad you figured out what to do with the others. I've had some with sun burn like that recover.
Scary Fear, I get the feeling that I failed. But then again, we just move on, learn from it and try even harder. 😉 Yeah, I am hoping this little astro with sunburn will recover. I have my fingers crossed.
the same happened to my Myriostigma Nudum...was really heartbroken yesterday... The brown thing at the bottom of cacti is called Corking...which is a part of natural aging process of cactus, some would also say that it is the plant's natural defense from rotting...😊
Such a bummer to lose your astrophytum!! I’ve lost a couple of cacti just in the last few months due to rot 😞 but great info for us to use when we see brown or black or even yellow. Thanks Ana!! 🌵❤️
Rotting in astrophytums is indeed hard to tell, it is because of their hard outer body. It is quite saddening, but atleast we learned a lesson. Hi ma'am! 😊
Spectacular buy, Ana. I would have bought some of them myself. I've a pot of String of Dolphins too which is trailing now. A year ago I bought a cactus and there was a 2in cutting growing inside beside it. I was very careful with how I replanted it and now I've a full pot. So happy!! I simply love hanging succulents. 👍👍😍😍
I was worried with my gymno thought i was rotting until i watched this video. Then i guess it's not. Thanks for the info ana. I really want to have chit chat with you cause you know a lot about cactus.
My oldest astro is about 10 years old with me by now and also has those brown marks. They appeared when it was around 3 years and at first I got scared, but after inspecting closely, I came to the impression that it has started to cork. I have no idea if I'm wrong, but the plant is still happy and growing!
Eloisa Louceiro oh then it must be normal for astros to have those dark marks at the bottom!!! This makes me feel so much better. 😃 I keep thinking that I am doing something wrong. Thank you so much for sharing that information about your own astrophytum. 👍🏼🙂☕️
Thank you so much for this informative video, Ms. Ana! It's really disheartening to see a plant dies especially if it's been taking cared well for a long time. I lost some cactus and succulents in the past months due to over-watering caused by recent typhoons here in the Philippines. Through your video I can at least know now how to differentiate whether if my cactus are having root rot or not. I hope things are doing well for you. Stay safe!
It was so helpful and sad to see what root rot looks like for cactus. Also, knowing that not all black spots mean disaster is hopeful. Thanks for sharing and stay blessed ☺️👍❤️.
Normally rotting could also be due to an open wound (it could be a small wound not noticeable ) somewhere at the rim of the cactus. When watering it will get on the wound and that’s where fungus can breed and enter thus killing the plant.
Oh no 😱😪😪 poor baby. Maybe it was overwatered from the Seller which it does not show until weeks later. Bummer 😔 Thank you so very much for all the knowledge, they were all excellent info. I love the fact that you shared with us the issue and provided us with excellent solution.😊💓😊. Keep on Ana💓💓💓🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I'm glad I found your channel 😊 I'm a newbie in growing cactus. I panicked when I saw that the bottom part of some of my cacti started to get yellow but after watching this vid., now I know its sort of normal for them.
I am so sorry for you lovely cactus. I don't think it was your fault, beeing such an experienced cactus grower. Most probably the damaged was in progress when you bought it. Bacterial infections destroy a plant overnight and smell bad but this was not the case. This was clearly a degrading slow process. That cactus was overwatered for long before you bought it. That's my two cents❤️❤️
Oh Fernanda, if this is correct then it makes me feel a lot better. I do remember that I bought this from a nursery that did not have a roof on top of its cactus rack. I bought it on a rainy week in winter. I inspected the cactus when I replanted it but did not see any rotting. Maybe it was just starting at that time. Thank you Fernanda, your 2 cents is worth way more!
Thank you so very much for your video...I now know what corking is...I've yet to experience the delights of rot...But at least now I have pointers...Again thank you 😊
I had a browningia herlingiana that did this similar rotting but not stinky, my best guess after dissecting was maybe he got too cold during shipping? Hard to tell for certain tho lol
Content creator Sheffield Made Plants video on root rot called : The Shocking TRUTH About Root Rot Most People Get Wrong. He also has a couple of other vids to stop root rot & another vid where he uses a cone shaped clay thing that he uses to water automatically, as it being porous leaks water really slowly when inserted into the soil
I lost a cactus recently to root rot and I couldn’t do anything to save it in time, by the time I discovered it, it already was fully hollow and falling apart
Thank you for doing this video. I was about to ask you if you could show us different spots on cactus that may look odd but are actually normal for a specific type. I find that I have “cleaned” off growth I thought was not supposed to be there to later realize it’s part of its growth/character. Like fibers or spots ,etc. Can cacti get scale what does that look like. I have a blue candle in an arrangement n it started getting yellow spots. I moved to less bright sun n now notice beige scale looking spot not tiny like usual scale. This was very helpful n hope u do more. Really helps to know what to look for n what’s a concern n what’s normal. Also which Neem oil do u use n how strong dilution?
Thank you so much. Yes, cactus can get scales, too. I encountered scales in one of my columnar cactus. You can see them in this video. ua-cam.com/video/WClzOzvBd3M/v-deo.html
What if my cactus is starting to wrinkle and feel soft but I don't see signs of root rot? I am waiting for my new dirt to officially arrive to actually check the roots though.
Maybe the cactus is just thirsty. Dehydrated cactus will also look wrinkled and feel soft. Or it might have completely lost its roots and is still in the process of regrowing them back. Good luck!
My cactus started rotting after 2 years for an unknown reason. I 100% did not overwater it. I learned my lesson when I overwatered one of my echeverias. But the cactus was healthy and growing and watered sparsely. It had a ton of pups and looked awesome. What could have caused this? Could it be underwatering actually?! If it was fungus or some bacteria, I don't know how it would get there. It was indoors. It was only the middle stem so i cut off the bottom and all the pups seemed unaffected. It is right now "disassembled", waiting for the roots to form.
I’m sorry your cactus rotted. I’ve had some rot as well for no reason. Sometimes, it starts with an insect/animal bite that gets infected. Sometimes, it is just fungus or bacteria that is dormant and when the right conditions come up, it suddenly becomes active and takes over your cactus. It is good that you got healthy pups out of it. Good luck rooting them so they can continue the life of your cactus. 🙂👍🏼🌵🌵🌵
Hi Ana, If you have time love, what is your opinion on what's wrong? I have a Ferocactus Latispinus and it's oozing sap from one areole on the crown at the sight of the growth. I'm growing it in a shallow small ceramic cereal bowl with 3 other desert barrel types. He is only about 3.81 centimeters in diameter. No pests are apparent. I water him only when he's been dry for several weeks. He gets about 4 to 5 hours of direct full sun but it's showing signs of slight scotching so I don't think he's getting too little sun. I've done lots of research but no solutions. Thoughts?
Is it soft where the sap is oozing out from? If yes, it might be top rot (fungus). But if the sap is clear and the cactus is not soft, maybe it is extra flora nectarine. Perfectly normal for ferocactus to do this.
Oh no☹️. So sorry about your cactus. This video was very informational. Thank you so much! I had one issue with one of mine and i had no clue what to do. I picked at it like it was a scab😂. Now i know maybe i shouldn't have done that🤦🏻♀️🤣
Thanks for insightful video. I was wondering if you have advice about my moon cactus. I have had it since May but noticed it was taking a long time for the soil to get dry so I waited about a month till it was fully dry before I watered it again. I didn’t realize it was too much as it had root rot. I cut off the blackening parts so only a very small section of cactus is left; the top orange scion is fine for now but will not survive without being grafted to another cactus. Can I use any cactus like the Stenocereus Pruinsus Cactus or mini cactus to graft the Scion for moon cactus? I already have the mini cactus. Or would you recommend another cactus or can I keep the original cactus in the soil though it has been substantially cut with only a tiny bit of root left?
hmmmm still wondering if mine got a sunburn or a little rot hole. i rescued mine from a garden that was abandoned and got destroyed by the last storm :c i potted one that had it's root intact and out of ground (because of the wind and rain) but it had a little hole up top, it hasn't gotten bigger but it hasn't healed either so i'm not sure what it is.
Shame because it looked like a nice looking cactus at first glance before you showed the rot. I keep Astrophytum's and they are well known to be sensitive to too much watering . I personally dont think you caused this though, my guess is its been watered over winter, almost a guarantee of disaster for this species. and being you only had it from feb onwards probably happened before you received it. Great video thanks for sharing with us all.
Great tips. One of my Coral crested cactus is starting to turn yellow starting at the stem. Its not soft yet should I cut it let it heal for a days? Then potted it up.
Rose Hussey yours have them, too? And they are growing? Must be a common thing for astros. 🤔 Knowing that other growers have them too makes me feel less concerned.
I know that you are the expert, however I have cactus similar to yours and none of the healthy ones have any dark around the bottom. I suspect yours is being caused by the layer of rocks on top. Rocks tend to hold moisture longer than cactus soil or various cactus mixes. Fungus can be in the mix however the rocks holding that moisture is probably leading to fungus and rot.
What if you have just a little bit of rot at the bottom but the roots are still intact? can I just cut the rot of and leave it to dry or will the roots take damage? :) What should I do instead?
Hi anna I lost plenty of astro as well due to root rot but im not sure if it has connection to root triming this year I learnd that thai people practice root triming and after adapting that practice I kept my astro thriving now. I am not sure if this is the reason why I am now not experiencing root rot to my astro
Marky Dee you are the second person to tell me about cactus root trimming practice in Thailand. They do that to their seedlings, too when they transplant. 🤔
Cactus Caffeine indeed, I just figure it out the rationale behind that, possible that they do that to prevent the development of fungi, because if a plant does have a root that is no longer efficient it will eventually die, and when roots die it decompose and later on will spread, but not quite sure hahaha.
Sroush Abidar maybe it is mold. Do you live in a humid place and your soil is always damp? If it is mold, I would scrape it off if you can, sprinkle cinnamon powder on top, then spray it a little with water. Then try to keep your soil dry or improve air circulation around it. Another possibility is it could be salt and mineral deposits from your water. If you have hard water, the minerals from the water tend to form white powder on top of your soil.
@@CactusCaffeine hi yes I'm in the UK always Cloudy and wet . Another question for UK weather how many times watering Cactus and what kind of liquid food is great? Thanks for your time 🌹
I have a spot in my garden that I’m trying to fill up with dirt to raise it. That’s where I dump my old soil. Nothing is planted there and the sun disinfects it. 🙂
Though i know almost nothing, i think you have too deep pots. ! I think it should be a bit wider and shallower. Secondly, with humility , would like to say that you may have been over watering it.
@@CactusCaffeine Hey there... Messaged on FB that I found you after searching for aide on my 4 foot cactus I've had a few years on my balcony here in Southern California... It had seemed to be doing impressively well, always blooming several green leaves on top late Aprik-Oct with just afternoon direct sun... Anyhow, several weeks ago I noticed the top going brown, & last couple weeks extended a few inches further. So, yesterday I pulled off that decayed top & used knives to further dig out a few more inches of interior rot but was hesitant to remove the further complete top area after seeing the sun dry it somewhat well. Do you think it's best to remove that too? Salamat, -Glenn😎

It is a good practice to spray or water with neem oil every now and then. It takes care of any dormant pest/fungus.

Is it soft where the sap is oozing out from? If yes, it might be top rot (fungus). But if the sap is clear and the cactus is not soft, maybe it is extra flora nectarine. Perfectly normal for ferocactus to do this.
@@CactusCaffeine Clear sap and firm cactus, so relieved. Thanks for the advice. 🥳
Oh no☹️. So sorry about your cactus. This video was very informational. Thank you so much! I had one issue with one of mine and i had no clue what to do. I picked at it like it was a scab😂. Now i know maybe i shouldn't have done that🤦🏻♀️🤣
I recently lost my Bishop’s Cap to this. :-( It was also a new cactus from a big box store.
Some bees atack euphorbia plants and they produce brown mark to protect
Thanks for insightful video.
I was wondering if you have advice about my moon cactus. I have had it since May but noticed it was taking a long time for the soil to get dry so I waited about a month till it was fully dry before I watered it again. I didn’t realize it was too much as it had root rot. I cut off the blackening parts so only a very small section of cactus is left; the top orange scion is fine for now but will not survive without being grafted to another cactus. Can I use any cactus like the
Stenocereus Pruinsus Cactus or mini cactus to graft the Scion for moon cactus? I already have the mini cactus. Or would you recommend another cactus or can I keep the original cactus in the soil though it has been substantially cut with only a tiny bit of root left?
hmmmm still wondering if mine got a sunburn or a little rot hole. i rescued mine from a garden that was abandoned and got destroyed by the last storm :c i potted one that had it's root intact and out of ground (because of the wind and rain) but it had a little hole up top, it hasn't gotten bigger but it hasn't healed either so i'm not sure what it is.
I love your Parodia scopa its so beautiful 💖
Thanks.
Aww. I hope you are correct because that will make me feel so much better. 😉 thank you so much for your kind words.
Great tips. One of my Coral crested cactus is starting to turn yellow starting at the stem. Its not soft yet should I cut it let it heal for a days? Then potted it up.
Oh no Ana ☹️ 😢 good video though I was wondering why one of my astrophytums has that brown mark 🤔 and is healthy and has still been growing
Rose Hussey yours have them, too? And they are growing? Must be a common thing for astros. 🤔 Knowing that other growers have them too makes me feel less concerned.
Cactus Caffeine I will take some pics of mine and send them to you via Instagram 😉
You are a good teacher. 🌵🌵
Thank you, that is so kind. But sometimes the best learning is from experience. And I learned mine the hard way. 🤦🏻♀️🙂
Anna, thanks for sharing.
Thanks, this was very helpful.
Noticed the worms? Being eaten from inside! Soil looks dry, so perhaps it’s a pest issue??
Probably. Could have been an insect bite that started the infection. 😔
Love your videos!!!
Thank you ☺️
hi, can you write me what kind of oil did you spray? i dont speak very well english and i didnt understand. thank you so much for your precious infos
Neem oil 🙂
So it's just discoloration? Thought it was rotting. I just cut mine bc i thought it was rotting. I'm airdrying it. Will it survive?
I’ll watch first 😊👍 ? I think the roots are not yet stable
😄
Maybe an insect burrowed in and an infection took over.
I would rather take that as the reason rather than the possibility of me overwatering it. 😄
What if you have just a little bit of rot at the bottom but the roots are still intact? can I just cut the rot of and leave it to dry or will the roots take damage? :) What should I do instead?
Yup! It’s rotting alright 😞
Cactus Haven 😭.
Did you remove the dirt it was in the store?
Connie Beal most of what I can but not all. Do you think it was due to the old soil?
Hi anna I lost plenty of astro as well due to root rot but im not sure if it has connection to root triming
this year I learnd that thai people practice root triming and after adapting that practice I kept my astro thriving now.
One of my cacti are turning yellow and is limp. Is that root rot?
It could be if it is starting from the bottom. I would remove the cactus in its pot and check its roots. Good luck!
Loved it! Extremely helpful and informative! Subscribing right know!
Thank you and welcome! 🙂🌵☕️
Heartbreaking :( [cradles my Bishops cap]
Blackheathenly it is. 😔 But we learn, move on and try harder. Learn from my mistake, best of luck to your Bishop’s cap. 😀👍🏼
That is root tot for sure.
K Titus 😔
What fertilizer can be used for cactus?
بالتوفيق ان شاء الله. وشكرا لك.
Very useful video!❤️❤️❤️
My fairy castle Ang zebra going brown? What must I do?
How long before cactus start rotting due to wet soil?
Watch out your coffe
Lol! 😁
Hi . On top of my Cactus soil is white like salt or fungi ! How clean and remove please? I changed soil 3 weeks ago .
Thanks for your time 🌹
Maybe this video can help answer your questions. 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/7VtDYOY-mfg/v-deo.html
It is lignification isn”t it? Normal in adult plants🤩
Do you reuse the soil from the rotten cactus?
I have a spot in my garden that I’m trying to fill up with dirt to raise it. That’s where I dump my old soil. Nothing is planted there and the sun disinfects it. 🙂
Yes it’s a rot alright🤯!
You know why Cactus rot because they have soggy soil
Though i know almost nothing, i think you have too deep pots. ! I think it should be a bit wider and shallower. Secondly, with humility , would like to say that you may have been over watering it.
I take this as a learning experience. I feel like I failed but I will move on and try even harder. 😉 Thanks so much!
I am over cactus for this poor behavior
What type of oil?
Neem oil. 🙂 Great natural fungicide.
@@CactusCaffeine Thanks so much!

Thank you for stopping by! 🙂🌵☕️
Salamat,
-Glenn😎
Great information!!
