  • It is time to repot the cacti that I purchased during my Fall Plant Haul video. This video will show how I repot a cactus, and what I do after buying new cactus from nurseries or big box stores. I will also share some tips about the soil that I use.

    The cactus soil that I use has cinders, perlite, pumice, processed forest products, processed softwood bark, compost and composted worm castings. I do see some volcanic rocks in it as well. I add more pumice for rot prone cactus.

      After watching your video, I decided I needed to shop around for cactus and cactus soil. To my astonishment , I found 2 very good places and shopped very contentedly ! I’ve been shopping at the wrong places . Both had actual cactus soil mix ( which I bought) and the nursery had a very good cactus/succulent selection . So thanx for making me rethink my shopping strategies👍

    I never handle my cacti with gloves, and I'll tell you that I absolutely do get pricked. All the time. It's more about how much you can handle getting pricked rather than avoiding it, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with using gloves!

    Hi Ana, new subscriber here. I live in Las Vegas (41 years) in the NW part of the valley near 95/Cheyenne. I have just recently developed a keen interest in succulents, euphorbias, cacti and house plants. I have one cactus that I brought here from California when I moved here. It has given me many offspring. After watching several of your videos I'm now more interested in cacti. Since Plant World sold to Moon Valley nursery years ago we're left with very limited choices for finding plants. I look forward to more videos from you and sharing the love of plants along the way. (My daughter-in-law is Filipina from Pangopango.)

      Hi Joan! It’s nice to meet a “neighbor” here on UA-cam. I always go to Star Nursery as they are closer to me. Except their plants are not labeled. Yes like cactus because they are tough in our climate. Plus their flowers are beautiful. 🥰 Keep in touch, Joan! And hello to your daughter in law! 😉

    Hi Ana, how do you do? I was wondering if you can help me with this question. I am in Canada and here is very cold, would you please tell me or recommend what kind of soil should I use or buy for my cactus, succulents and rhipsalis. I use terra-cotta pots for all my cactus and succulents and I keep them in my south leave room. Please advise. Thank you so much for your videos.

      Any well draining soil that has more inorganic than organic since your weather is usually cold and humid. You can start by buying a cactus soil from the store and just adjust accordingly

    Thank you for the great vid! I watched a guy the other day use a newspaper folded over several times and wrapped around the cacti to lift it out and also to hold it in place while repotting whilst only holding the newspaper “ends” that were pinched together on one side of the cacti (I hope that makes sense). Obviously wouldn’t probably work the greatest while trying to remove old medium with water if you were to get it wet.... but otherwise seemed to work well. Protected him from the needles and help prevent needle damage from him. Thought I’d share with you in case you or others wanted to try it sometime. Best wishes 🌱💕

      Thank you for sharing that to us. I also use an old shirt or for the really mean spiny ones, an old pair of jeans to handle the cactus. I grab whatever I can to handle the cactus cause I’m such a cry baby when it comes to spines and glochids. 😂

    I wish the cactus mix I buy here looked like yours. Ours looks like regular potting soil /: And it’s humid here in Dallas so I’m making my own gritty mix following research that I did. Last spring I added perlite alone to the soil and it made a big difference with my succulents .

      Yes, you should always adjust depending on your climate. Mine is so dry that I still add coco coir sometimes to my cactus mix. Plus I also use tera cotta pots. For you, more inorganic than organic is better. 🙂

    Great to see your large cactus nursery and the healthy plants. As far as my potting mix we seldom get ready to use potting mix in India. So I make my own with cocopit, riversand little broken pieces of coal and a liberal dose of perlite. Should we add any organic/inorganic manure in the potting mix for cactus?

    I live in Riverside, California, and I'm not sure what other's suggestions mean when they say do or don't do something particularly in the autumn or spring as I think most of those suggestions come from people who live in wetter and cooler places. I've some succulents that are said to be particular about when to water and when not to water.
    Just how are the seasons, spring, autumn, winter, and summer for semi dessert where I live.?

    I think that they came planted in coco-perlite mix, i.e. a mix of perlite and coconut coir, not peat. The coconut is much better than peat. I also learned that from experience. Peat is harder to wet once dried, and tends to absorb rather than provide moisture when it is too dry. Peat also retains too much water, which is a problem in places with more precipitations, especially in winter (The Mediterranean are).

      Succulent Hauz Those are Leuchtenbergia principis. Some call them the agave cactus because of the way it looks. I buy gardening gloves with a hard cover on the palm. Di ko alam anong tawag sa material basta the type that glochids don’t cling to although really sharp spines can still penetrate it. I use tongs, too to handle my cactus. 🙂

One of my cactus it’s sort of by yellow color with Teenie tiny spikes on it and if you don’t get those out right away you will find them to pull!! They get Infected and you think that it’s going to get better but it doesn’t it just starts over again and over again and over again! I stay clear of that plant! I love your show and how you tell us how to do everything. It’s just a joy to watch it!

      Oh, I buy mine at a local nursery store here. The other brand that I use is the house brand soil of Star Nursery (Nevada and Arizona locations). I don’t think they sell it online. I try not to use those with peat moss. Peat moss gets too compact and is hard to rehydrate when it gets very dry.

    Beautiful cacti Ana! I’m new to the hobby and struggling to find the perfect soil best for my climate. I only have about 100 desert type cacti now and going to stop buying until next spring, so I can see how they do this year. I am using the forbidden (according to many haha) Miracle Gro for cactus and succulents. So I guess I’ll see next how they do. Hopefully I won’t have to repot them all with some other soil mixture. I think terra cotta pots are perfect for cacti for both drainage and looks. Thank you for sharing these little beauties!!!

    • @billastell3753
      @billastell3753 4 роки тому +1

      I live in a northern climate and tend to over water so I use terra cotta to promote quick drying. Works well for me. The trouble with miracle grow is it does hold moisture. Where I live and given my inclination to over water it will cause rot in rot sensitive varieties.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  4 роки тому

      Hi Karen. 100 desert types, wow! I would love to see your collection. I used that brand of soil before. It is better than many other brands but the main thing I don’t like is that when it gets too dry (which happens often in my desert climate), it is very hard to get it wet again. The water would just sit on top of the soil for a long time before the soil absorbs it. But my cacti thrived in that soil, too with added perlite or pumice. 🙂 i hope all goes well for you and good luck this winter. 🙂🌵☕️

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  4 роки тому

      Hi Bill, thank you for your input. That is the reason why I use my left over Miracle Gro for my leafy/fleshy succulents because they like more water than cactus. 🙂 Cheers to terra cotta pot users! Hahaha. 🌵☕️😁
