    I've made the mistake of underwatering my cacti. People think that because they live in the desert they only need watered a couple times a year or something like that. Its not true. They may survive treatment like that but they won't grow or flower. As you said, keeping the feeder roots from desiccating without rotting is the trick.

    • @theplantprinceph

    Hi! I have my baby cacti currently on a south facing windowsill in the UK where it can be quite bright and warm on a sunny day. Where else can I put my baby cacti for the three months before opening them gradually?

    • @theplantprinceph
      @theplantprinceph  8 місяців тому

      South facing windowsill is actually a perfect spot. Unless there’s a problem, you don’t have to relocate your cactus. If you have a greenhouse that would be better, or you could also put them under grow lights just be careful not to place them near it since it may cause sunburn.

    In india summer days are very hot and cactus on my balcony their soil dry very quickly. I gave them stored tap water thrice in a week. And some small cactus ruined it's natural color and turned yellow. What to fix please help.

    • @theplantprinceph
      @theplantprinceph  Рік тому +3

      There are several reason why cactus turn yellow.
      First is probably because of sunburn. Since small cactus are vulnerable they may get sunburn from sudden extreme temperature changes, especially if the cactus is in direct sunlight. Unfortunately if this happen, you can’t fix it. The solution would be, put it in a more shaded area, or put it under filtered sunlight (with UV plastic sheet).
      Second would be too much watering and not allowing the roots of the cactus to breathe. Too much water makes it impossible for air to travel to the roots. With no aeration, the roots would likely to get root rot especially if your soil is not gritty. Make sure that you allow the cactus to dry in between watering, and that you use a gritty soil mix to have proper aeration in the soil.

    good day! in hot weather, the earth dries up in 3 days, does this mean that you need to immediately water the cactus?

    • @theplantprinceph
      @theplantprinceph  Рік тому

      Hello,
      I also live in a place where the soilmix dries up fast. What I usually do is to just give water enough only for the soil mix to get moist, then water the cactus fully after another days.
      It will be like this:
      * Mon - Full watering (water comes out in the pot’s hole)
      * Tues
      * Wed
      * Thurs
      * Fri - a little amount of water just to make sure that cactus roots will remain active and will not dry
      * Sun
      * Mon
      * Tues
      * Wed - Full watering (water comes out in the pot’s hole

    hi, do i need to wait for 1-2 weeks before i water my cactus after repotting?

    • @theplantprinceph
      @theplantprinceph  Рік тому +1

      Hello👋🏻 After repotting, I usually water them after 3 days. This will give them time to heal the roots scars from planting/transplanting.
      Be careful on the amount of water you give. Since there are only a few roots, I only moisten the soilmix to encourage root growth. I do this for atleast 1-2 months.
      After 2 months or when I notice that there are plenty of roots, that is the time I start watering them full (until the water goes out of the bottom of the pot).

    How you fix the wrinkly cacti that have been underwater? My cactus suddenly got wrinkly after flowering

    • @theplantprinceph
      @theplantprinceph  8 місяців тому

      Just water them thoroughly, you could water them twice in one watering session to make sure the whole soil mix gets wet. It will eventually get better. If it doesn’t get plump after days from watering, I suggest to check the roots for root mealybugs or root rot.

    In your environment, how often do u water your cactus?

    • @theplantprinceph
      @theplantprinceph  Рік тому +2

      I really don't have an exact schedule or specific time interval. I usually check the condition of my cactus. But on average, I water my 2 inches pot cactus atleast once or twice a week, 3 inches pot cactus atleast once a week or every two weeks, and larger cactus once or twice per month.
      I water more frequent when it is summer or when it is windy, and less frequent during rainy season. To give you an idea, here's an example.
      3 inches pot Astrophytum asterias
      • Usual watering will be once a week or twice a week.
      • During summer it will be once or twice a week (especially if the air is dry, and heat is intense)
      • During rainy season it will be once every two to three weeks.

      Watering with 5 mL of water is not sufficient for the cactus. This will also be tiring if you have a large collection of cactus. Cactus thrive on places wherein it rains occasionally, I’m pretty sure that they sip water more than 5mL to prepare for droughts.

      You can water the whole cactus. In their natural habitat they get wet all throughout because of rain and sometimes flash floods. You just have to make sure that your place is windy and you water the cactus when the sun is not intense preferably late afternoon or early in the morning. This is to avoid sunburn.
