I’ve lost a couple of my cacti over the last few months, due to rot, two of which rotted for no reason. I unfortunately had to compost all the rotted ones, because they were small, I just didn’t have enough to save, and I made the mistake of not letting my cuttings callus over. These videos have been invaluable, even with my beginner mistakes 😅

How to save my cactus which is 6 feet tall its base it blackened by over watering and its huge single trunk at the base whichhas rot.how to save that 6.5 feet tall cactus
Hi! I followed your advice to save a 20-year-old cactus. Three weeks ago, I cut, sprinkled with cinnamon, wrapped in plastic (to hold), and placed the cactus in a cool, dry location indoors that gets indirect light. So far, so good. I see a bit of callousing but do not see any evidence of roots yet. I watched another of your instructional videos that illustrates wrapping the cactus in paper and placing in a glass. I am wondering if you have "next step" video for the one above that shows how that particular cactus evolved (your storage, callousing, rooting, and planting). I don't want to mess this up, and I have never taken care of a cactus before. Your videos are FaBulous!
Hi Amy :-D thats fantastic you have saved your 20 year old cactus, and brilliant that your cactus is callusing over, the roots can take many months before they will develop, and usually roots will start to grow from the callused end anything from 3 -12 months, unfortunately I don't have a video of the follow up on this cactus, but the roots started to grow after about 9 months of having this cutting air drying and rooting, and once the roots developed I potted up the cactus and it bloomed this year, The god news is its normal for the first few weeks for the cactus to focus on forming a hard callus at the bottom and then roots will develop in time but it can take a god few months and patience is the key, so happy you love my videos and thanks so much Amy for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalonI am so happy to hear back from you and to receive your encouragement! I don't know what I'm doing, so I really do appreciate your guidance. There is a point forming in the center of the base (which I thought was a root, but since I watched a few more of your video, I realize that it is not a root). Also, there is a bit of what looks like mold forming on one side. Is there a way that I could show you photos? I just want to make sure that I am saving this cactus and not causing harm. My husband and I inherited it from a relative we lost about 15 years ago, so this rescue mission is an important one to me. Again, thank you so much for your great advice and super positive vibes!
@@AmyMoredock Hi Amy :-D yes you can send me a photo via email at lyn@desertplantsofavalon.com I may not be able to get onto my emails until tomorrow morning as I have to go into work this evening, but I will be able to check first thing in in the morning for you XXXX

Hi Lynn! Hope you've had a great summer! My cat knocked over a huge 40 year old cactus and it broke into smithereens. Lucky though, because it was full of mildew and rot. I managed to save all the little pups but the main stems were full of rot. I did exactly what you did and applied cinnamon and left it to dry for about a month. Everything is potted up and looks good. I haven't fully watered, just used a spray bottle and gave a few spritzes. Should I not do that at all and just leave it dry?
Just discovered the first rot on a cactus of mine :(( I inspected the roots and they were healthy looking but from the stem up and it was pretty mushy and brown in some places. Don’t think it’s due to overwatering. Maybe it already had this when I got it but I didn’t see it due to the crests of the plant hiding it? And I only notice it now because it was spreading idk :( I do remember tearing off some dried up parts from the plant when I got it on the underside of the plant. Really sucks was the second largest cactus I owned and I really loved how the crests made it look like a brain. It was some kind of echinopsis if I remember correctly, only created. Hope I’ll be able to propagate from the cuttings I took, not sure, first time doing this. Really sad though :(((
Oh no I am so sorry to hear about your Cactus, I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you will be able to save it from cuttings, its gutting when this happens to cacti we love, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and Happy Holidays XXXX
I have this kinds of cactus ,it grow very healty and very tall and is started to blooms , but i don't know what the name of this cactus ,please tell me the name of this cactus and i really like your cactus video.🌵🌵
Hi there :-D thats fantastic you have this cactus, its a Cleistocactus samaipatanus, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
Hi there I have a cactus that looks like a similar species but a lot slimmer, maybe a quarter of the diameter & it’s never flowered & have had it about 5 years & it’s grown from a teeny tiny pot to taking over quite a big pot & it’s started to go yellow & floppy at the base of his branches & I think it’s got root. 😢😔 I’m thinking I’m going to have to do as you have suggested with his green ends to try to save as much of him as I can . I would love it if I could send you a photo to help me figure out what the species is & to make sure I definitely need to do this before I take a knife to him & butcher my original plant who I love so much & has real sentimental value xxx
Hi Clair :-D so sorry to hear about your cactus and I hope you will be able to save it, you can send me a DM on Instagram if you are on Insta ? if not you can email me a photo at lyn@desertplantsofavalon.com and I will try my best to ID and help XXXXX
Awwww I will keep my fingers crossed that you can save your cactus and thanks so much for watching, wishing you a wonderful plant powered Thursday XXXX
Hi Phyllis, it can depend on the type of cactus, but if it has leaves it may be an epiphytic cactus like a Christmas or other type of Holiday cactus, it can be normal for the lower leaves to go brown at the bottom and as long as the cactus is not rotting or has any signs of insect pests then you can prune off the dead leaves at the bottom, thanks so much for watching and happy growing XXXX
Hi Violet :-D yes the good news is this cactus has re rooted now and recovered really well, thanks so much for your fantastic comments and support, and wishing you a wonderful plant powered weekend ahead XXXX
Hi there, once the cutting has dried I put a bamboo cane into the pot and tie up the cutting to support it and stop the cutting from falling out the pot, happy growing and have a wonderful plant powered weekend XXXX
I cut mine and left it to callus for a few days, but instead of drying, the cut part got mouldy. I cut it again, but the middle is looking rotten, a little brown. What should I do? 😢
So sorry to hear about your cactus, if the middle part is going brown sadly it may be too late to save the cactus, sometimes the rot can spread too fast into the cactus to save it and it can be impossible to save once the rot has gone further, thanks so much for watching and wishing you a wonderful plant powered new week XXXX
Hi Andishe :-D yes you can use the same method, I hope you can save your cactus, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
Hi there :-D yes the good news is if the cactus is brown at the base but not soft and squidgy then its most likely due to natural corking, some of my 2 year old seedlings do this too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX
Hi there :-D some cacti varieties e.g Stenocactus can go pink at the bottom once they have been cut and this is normal during the drying time, but if you notice any brown or black or the end goes soft and squishy this would be rot and you will need to take another cut, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
We took cuttings from a 7' tall 40 yr old cactus and I let them sit to callous and the bottom of the cuttings are turning black! I read that this is a fungal infection. The mom plant is fine and still huge. Don't think the cuttings can really be saved.
Oh no with the cuttings turning black, this definitely sounds like a fungal problem and your cuttings may not be saveable, you could try cutting back the cuttings again but the fungus may be inside of the cactus tissues, thanks so much Sandy for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon I threw the worst out, cut the other one and put Cinnamon on the wound. The largest one is doing OK. We shall see! I just gave those rat tail cuttings new soil with more peat moss and perlite. I'm missing something in their soil. They dry out and I think I'm not watering as much so hoping this will finally get me some healthy roots! I enjoy the challenge... such a fun journey!
Hi Jo Anna, so sorry to hear about your cactus, unfortunately it sounds like it is too late to be able to do anything now because if it is dripping and floppy the cold would have damaged it completely, its gutting when we lose plants and the very cold weather this Winter has damaged and killed a lot of growers plants, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon Thank you ☺️ my daughter was given the cactus from a teacher at school when she was 11. She’s now 24 and I feel awful. This happened after I repotted it. However, I cut the very tip just to see and it’s solid. I am doing what you have suggested. Fingers crossed 🤞xxx

Hi Wario :-D yes the fantastic news this cactus survived and has now re rooted and growing again, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Wednesday XXXX
Hi Jason :-D I am not sure about spray bleach as I have not used it personally, I think the best way is to completely remove any signs of visible rot first before using any type of bleach, the bleach may be too strong for the plant tissues, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX
Hi Anita :-D yes let the cutting callus for two months before planting and then very lightly spray around the base of the cactus with water to help rooting, but still keep mostly on the dry side, the cutting will still send out roots if the soil is kept dry too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon thank you so much. If it works, I will be sure to come back and let you know. It’s Winter here in the US. I live in Buffalo,NY. So I have grow lights. But I will make sure the cutting is kept out in low light. 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Hi there, its best to let the cactus callus over once it has been cut for at least a month or until the cut has fully hardened, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
Hi Everyone,(BEGINNER QUESTIONS) Something similar happened to my cactus and I have no idea who to ask on this but when I cut it open there were little white bits of pus coming out and I’m unsure why? Also I put plenty of sulphur powder on the cactus wound but I’m unsure how I will know roots are growing and when to replant the cactus with new soil? I’m so sorry but I’m really new to propagating a cactus so I’m really unsure what to do? I would greatly appreciate any and all advice. Thank you xo
Hi Sophie, so sorry to hear about your cactus, I think that the white pus could be one of two things, the first could be a fungus from the rot, but the other could possibly be caused from Mealy Bugs, often both foliage and root mealy bugs will burrow into the plant and lay their white nests and hide in any places they can get into on cactus, this can cause the cactus to weaken and rot, thats great news you have used the sulphur powder, you need to leave the cactus cutting unpotted until it has formed a very hard white crust at the cut of the cutting, it can take many weeks or months depending on the diameter of the cactus cutting, once the cutting has fully callused and formed the white dry crust at the base of the cutting you can plant up in a dry gritty cactus soil, if its your Fall? Autumn now its best to keep the soil dry until the following Spring, the cutting will still send out rots even if the soil is dry, Good luck with your cactus and sending you lots of love and plant power for a wonderful Sunday XXXX

Hi Mick :-D I hope you had a fantastic Summer too
Hey Lynn,
I also had a problem with my San Pedro cactus , but cant find any video that van help me out.
Would you like to help me ?
Kind regards Gil

Hi

How do you care for cactus that flower and the leaves turn brown at the bottom
Hi Phyllis, it can depend on the type of cactus, but if it has leaves it may be an epiphytic cactus like a Christmas or other type of Holiday cactus, it can be normal for the lower leaves to go brown at the bottom and as long as the cactus is not rotting or has any signs of insect pests then you can prune off the dead leaves at the bottom, thanks so much for watching and happy growing XXXX
Did you get it cut to grow roots?
Hi Violet :-D yes the good news is this cactus has re rooted now and recovered really well, thanks so much for your fantastic comments and support, and wishing you a wonderful plant powered weekend ahead XXXX
So... how you make it stand after it dries???
@@desertplantsofavalon the sad part is that it wasn't brown when I cut it the for the first time. I should have prevented the mould from forming. 😭

Hi there, I did this. And the end started to turn pink. Is this normal during the drying time?
Hi there :-D some cacti varieties e.g Stenocactus can go pink at the bottom once they have been cut and this is normal during the drying time, but if you notice any brown or black or the end goes soft and squishy this would be rot and you will need to take another cut, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon thank you! 🥰

Hi Jo Anna, so sorry to hear about your cactus, unfortunately it sounds like it is too late to be able to do anything now because if it is dripping and floppy the cold would have damaged it completely, its gutting when we lose plants and the very cold weather this Winter has damaged and killed a lot of growers plants, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

would spray bleach work?
Hi Jason :-D I am not sure about spray bleach as I have not used it personally, I think the best way is to completely remove any signs of visible rot first before using any type of bleach, the bleach may be too strong for the plant tissues, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX
So for two months you allow it to callous?. Then spray base?
Hi Anita :-D yes let the cutting callus for two months before planting and then very lightly spray around the base of the cactus with water to help rooting, but still keep mostly on the dry side, the cutting will still send out roots if the soil is kept dry too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
