After doing a bit of Googling, I realized most websites out there are writing a bunch of fluff where their sole purpose is to drive you to Amazon so they get a commission. You can tell they don’t even care if it’s the right board for you.
Don't get me wrong, there were some websites I came across with helpful info, but they were straight-up overwhelming. So I thought to myself... if I was just getting into longboarding, what would be the most important factors to help me pick the best longboard.

A lot of people requested specific board recommendations, but it’s hard to since stock often sells out and it’s such a personal decision. I didn’t wanna make a blanket statement, so if you need help, drop a comment with your specifications and I’ll do my best to recommend options for ya. Thanks for watching and all the support! Appreciate you!!
Shred Shack any board from loaded really
It you are just a beginner just go with a Punked board they are complete board set ups that are honestly good quality for a fair price. It’s a start for someone looking for longboarding starter kit.
Justin Milligan no I’m not a beginner I just like reviews for loaded boards and there are far and few in between and I really like how the guy review boards that’s why I want him to review any loaded boards
Justin Milligan and lmaoooooooooooooooo no go for a landyachtzs board instead for the price you’re getting the absolute best quality and if you can get the FG watercolor that extra layer of fiberglass is amazing and also the wheels the wheels are incredible
Yo would u consider doing a review on the 44” quest super cruiser

I kept running into fake articles when looking for a dancing longboard that had absolutely no idea what they were saying and were just tryna sell amazon boards
Also heck yea go used! There’s plenty of boards out there sitting in peoples garages collecting dust and they’ll probably be just as good if not better than an amazon board
Haha it's crazy! The majority of sites are selling Amazon boards
For real. I finally stopped looking on there, went on to various forums before finally finding my Landyachtz Stratus. 100% worth the $200 I spent on it. It's perfect for me and anything I want to do with it
As a beginner who has read many other "beginner guides," I can confirm that this video is perfect and easy to understand. Thank you for making such an informative yet short video.
My recommendation for anyone starting out is to cycle through a bunch of different used boards. Every time I changed boards, I broke through a skill plateau. No joke, riding a Penny Nickel Board after my first board was crushed by a bus was the biggest skill booster. At first I hated it because it was such a contrast to my stupid long pintail cruiser, but that contrast challenged me to get good. Then I converted a skate deck someone left in the lobby and learned a completely different skillset.
Currently rocking a 38" 2012 Tomahawk which I absolutely love, but I'm thinking of getting something a little more nimble with a kicktail for slapping sidewalks. And the cool part is, I wouldn't know that if I hadn't tried a as many boards as I have. Also thinking of grabbing a dancing deck just because I know it's another way moving the progression bar a couple more notches.
This is really solid insight Mike, thanks for sharing. It's all about progression !!
I absolutely agree! I bought a ZFlex Pintail for my first time, and was having difficulties with that off the bat. Then I bought the Landyachtz Drop Cat, a Sector 9 Drop through, and now riding that top mount zFlex is no problem at all. (I love it now that I've got down carving) Also bought my first "short" board not too long ago (Landyachtz Dugout), so I can tackle shorter styles, but trying different boards has definitely built my skill up 100%.
I'm a fan of cheap, used, and even low quality stuff for starting out in most things. It's a learning experience. If you're not too invested or attached to your board because it's an old beater or cheap deck, it's easier to find the things you don't like about it, or you think you don't. You won't feel as compelled to like it just because you spent $500 on top tier stuff that doesn't fit your size, weight, or riding style but the hype told you is the 'best'. Once you get to know what you like and don't like by feel and function then you'll be able to choose the board that's right for you. A LOT of it is individual though, and that's why there's so many options. There is no 'best' overall board that you can buy without experience. The 'best' board is the one that you feel is an extension of you, with nothing extra and nothing missing, regardless of brand or discipline.
Try to ride or at least stand on as many boards as possible, ask your friends who skate if you can feel their board out. Stand on it and notice how your feet fit, how the concave feels, and how much of what kind of concave it has. If you can (and if you have basic skills like pushing and turning), roll around a bit and notice how tight or wide it turns or carves. Try to notice what different heights of boards feel like, and trucks as well. Different brands of trucks perform differently, none are any better than the other generally, but if you like to carve then some trucks will dive into the carve and give you a surfy, flowy feel at low speeds. On the other hand some riders (like myself) HATE feeling any dive or dip in the turn, and will look for trucks and bushings that eliminate it. Be aware of it. Does the board feel like it gets higher or lower in a carve? Do you like it?
And that's the big question to ask when you try ANY board, do YOU like it? Does it fit? Is the concave comfortable? Does it have a nose or tail and do you use them? Does dive feel good or bad? Ride as much different stuff as you can and remember what feels good. Remember WHY it felt good, what you like about the size, shape, concave, flex, stiffness, and all the other details and look for boards with those features for any serious purchase.
If you're so new to skating that you can't so much as push, then get any borrowed or secondhand board that will fit under your feet and learn to just get comfortable standing on it. Stand on it indoors on a rug and just pretend you're rolling while you watch youtube videos. Just get used to feeling the board under you, the trucks leaning, and eventually your body will figure out what to do. Binge watch something while standing on your board and you'll soon find a comfortable stance that feels natural.
Ahh the same mindset as drawing using different boards is like using different mediums and learning an entirely new skillset.
@@Daniel-tx2vt Pretty much, just extend that to everything. Personally i like the cheap, basic, or manually operated stuff when starting out in almost anything because it forces you to learn to overcome challenges early and adapt before you develop muscle memory. You encounter problems and break stuff, and when you do, you learn a lot more about the subject by having to apply theory to solve a problem, increasing your own knowledge and experience in the subject. The biggest benefit though is by doing this i learn to deal with limitations and problems, and find out WHY better or more specialized equipment is worth it, or right for me.

Started cruising recently on the same Dingy blunt. I got a longboard from "Spiele-Max" (a German company for kid's toys) few years ago and it costs only 40 euros. I mean, I can use it, but I think a good board will be a much better experience

My first proper board was a mini cruiser, I used it to get around my college campus. Now I use a full size longboard with a platypus shape (with a fairly broad nose and tail) to get around my hometown. Our streets and pathways suck here though (small semi-rural town in Ireland) so I've been considering getting some chunkier wheels.
Finally I've picked up a super cheap standard skateboard from Amazon recently to try learn how to ollie, just for fun.
I like how the racer dude was still wearing vans
Im a downhill/freeride skater for 3 years now and still enjoyed watching this. Great video my guy. I think average sized 33" to 39" drop-through boards are also good overall boards for beginners who dont know yet which style their into.
Dude I'm stokeeddd to hear that. Great suggestion. I agree, that a range of 33-39" is very solid for a beginner. Thanks for watching!

I'm a beginner and bought a higher quality board (Arbor)and what I noticed is it's been easier to learn on because the board wheels so smooth. Some of the cheaper boards are just so difficult to ride as a beginner because the wheels kind of trip you up (in my limited experience).
I've had an Arbor longboard too for about 4 years now and they are very smooth, longboard wheels are generally softer than skateboard wheels, which is why I've never preferred skateboards
Dropcruiser is great. Slap some phat 97mm wheels on there for crappy roads.
I just got a Quest Super Cruiser (44 inch board) and I’ve been obsessed. I got it used, like new, and I have noticed nothing wrong with it. I went on a 2 mile total ride. 1 mile to a shop, 1 back to my house. With it being my first long ride on the board I noticed that after about a mile, it started making a slight noise when riding fast but without too much pressure in the front. Apart from this tiny thing, it has been a complete blessing and i completely love it

Only thing I would change is landyachtz to high tier
@@danielfriedman3814 no. Landyachtz boards for the most part are made in China and are cheap easy to reproduce boards. They have some higher end stuff made by locals in Vancouver but the majority of Landyachtz stuff is cheaply made. You will find with most brands they will have a lineup of cheaper boards that are just meant to put boards out the door and make money. Hence the dinghy. They use those boards to make large profit and then will make higher quality more limited boards.

I’ve been longboarding on a cruising board for 2 years I just got a freestyle board today and I’m so excited to start riding a new style. This wasn’t wasting for me at all and thank you for the information
Highly recommend against buying a retrospec board bought one as my first longboard the deck snapped while I was cruising around a park. Got a replacement and the same thing happened. Save up and get a landyachtz or some other reputable brand
Yup, I completely agree with you. The only time I'd recommend it is if the person doesn't know if they want to get into longboarding. But in most cases, I'd recommend saving up more and avoiding it. Thanks for the suggestion!
Punked is a decent brand I got a sick drop deck. Yea it snapped but that was because I let my friend kickflip it.
Thanks for this comment, I was thinking about buying one 😅
Yeah I have a Santa Cruz longboard just bought it 5 days ago haven’t ridden it cause it’s snowing waiting till summer to ride it I have a land yacht and a random board I bought off of Amazon and that’s the one I use in any weather just waiting for it it snap so much flex just not when I’m bombing hills 😂 I don’t have pintail boards I hate them don’t know why
I just bought a retrospec for 70 mannnnnnnnn
When I started early this past summer, I knew I would eventually want to upgrade but wanted something simple to cruise around on. I went with a Retrospec 41" Pintail which I got for only $60, so I was not expecting much, but I'm thrilled with it so far - to anyone looking for something similar to me (an absolute beginner looking for casual fun) I absolutely would say the great reviews for Retrospec are accurate. However, I know now that I am confident on a board and will want to continue this hobby for a long time, so I am planning on upgrading as predicted. Thanks to your channel, I've started saving for a Dinghy board to downsize, yet upgrade - so that I can commute around my college campus and learn some tricks.
Awesome to hear, thanks for sharing this! As long as you’re okay with a smaller deck, then the dinghy will be a really solid next board. Thanks for watching!
its truly an addiction lol, i have 2 i would have more but uh cars are pretty fuckin heavy lmao

Helpful info, great production value. Just everything about it is spot on. Subscribed and I’m recommending you to my friends as well. Keep up the great work!
My first board (that i still use) is Globe cruiser board i got off of amazon for about $150 and it is a wonderful board, it rides so well and feels great. I later bought new bearings and some shark wheels because of the environment I ride in, but overall the original board was a 10/10 from me
when ur a beginner who just happened to order the perfect shape cause it was the cheapest one 😂
pls tell me which one all of the ones i see are like £100
Didn't find this video until after I got my first board. I went with a 40in drop down from Santa Cruz and so far it's been a great experience.
Great video! One thing I’ve learned over the years of introducing friends to longboarding is never assume they know anything. I have had friends that buy a surfy type longboard and want to bomb some hills. So I usually recommend for beginners a solid drop-through longboard. Most people don’t know what I mean, but they’re looking for stability to go down some medium sized hills. Anyway, love watching your channel!
I have a few Loaded and Landyachtz boards, which are amazing. I also recommend Bustin for the mid-tier. Huge props for Muir too, they do free shipping on everything
Bustin is another I've heard so much about but never tried. Can never go wrong with Muir in my opinion
@@concrete-waves I don't see a double-drop board behind you, so not sure if you have one, but the Sportster would be an awesome board to review. I checked the price again and it's actually more of a top-tier board pricewise. Great videos!

I decided to teach myself how to longboard being stuck at home starting in March, and my Ehler has held up really well! I actually just put my second set of bearings on. And if you're into asthetic stuff, you can customize what graphic it has & all the other components on the build-a-board site. I'm kinda a tall guy in a semi rural spot, but my 41" was in the $120-$140 with some of the options I chose. For a beginner with craptastic balance who was testing the waters, I would highly recommend them for a first board. 👍
I have the platypus shape one and I haven't seen many people use those so far. Knowing they're freestyle and versatile is kind of reassuring because I wasn't 100% sure. Thank you!
Just picked up the Landyachts Drop Cat 33" and it is a BEAST. Super versatile for cruising or freeride and stable enough for bombing smaller hills. Would definitely recommend for people who have a budget above 200.
This channel is absolutely underrated.
Keep going!
Thanks so much! Appreciate that
For your first board, trying them out in person (in the store) or asking a friend to try theirs is a great way to figure out what length and shape of board you prefer
Love the content man.
I recently got a drop through board and would love to see you make a video about them regarding pros/cons and how to get the best use out of them. Cheers!

There’s something so satisfying about UA-cam videos that answer all your questions. Thank you shred king 👑👍
I’m not a freestyle rider, more of a cruiser myself. I actually tested out a drop through board and found out that the lower center of gravity that’s have with the drop through was way more comfortable. I’m not a scientist but considering I’m a bigger guy I feel like I had more control due being a little closer to the ground unlike how I am when I’m on a cruiser. Plus almost no wheel bite on the drop through so that’s pretty rad. I just wanted to share my opinion because maybe I could help some people out along with this really good video guide.
BRO YOUR CHANEL IS SO UNDERRATED!! I just subbed finished binge watching all your vids, great stuff and so helpful keep it up👍
This video definitely helped me confirm the board I had in mind. Mini cruiser 24" maple deck, with pu wheels, and 3.25" aluminium trucks (probably the first thing to upgrade down the road).
Bought an arbor brand freestyle board as my first a few weeks ago. I’m 22, Never skated before, and I totally suck, but I never knew I’d love it so much.
Thanks for the awesome advice and the informative video!
My first board was a never summer and ever since then I've been in love with the boards so much so I own 2 now a clutch and heist but sadly I had to buy them used since the company has stopped making longboards and is now focusing they're attention to their snowboards. I would strongly recommend never summer if you can find one. Great build and excellent quality boards
That cruiser board looked so much like the street boards I was riding in the 80's
Getting a bit old for street and flatland freestyle, but I been curious about longboards for a while.
And it looks again like the freestyle longboard might be the best fit for me.

My first board was a 40 inch mercer. It was about $180 and platypus shaped. My reason for getting that shape was because im not really interested in tricks but i want to dance on or around my board. I also got it that shape for cruising and to avoid wheel bite. I just got into longboarding and i actually just got my first board a few months ago like in july. I mainly just want to cruise though. I have 2 boards now but i want all different types and start a collection 😁
Trying to start long boarding and this vid helped SOOO much!. Thanksss
My first board was from Osprey Action Sports and I got a 40" pintail complete longboard, with slide gloves and a helmet for £56. I used it to learn dancing/freestyle and learned how to pop shuv, ollie and nollie bigspin on it. The deck lasted me almost a year, the wheels lasted a bit longer and I'm still riding with some of the same bearings from that board 2.25 years on. If you're in the UK, you should definitely check them out.
BRO iv been watching your videos for awhile now I swear I just love how you explain things with so much ergonomics I believe wholeheartedly anyone watching your videos will learn more as a beginner then any other you tuber
I bought a skateboard first and have decided I enjoyed the cruising aspect of it most, but it wasn't comfortable. So I bought myself my first longboard. A Retrospec board. Don't remember the name but it's huge (40+in) and was about $60. I swapped the bearings for Fireball Bearings (my friend uses them in his longboard and feel amazing) and that's been my set up. I like how wide the board is and how much concave there is. The length is a bit difficult at times to manage since I'm not very tall. The wheels are harder rubber so I'm thinking about replacing them with shark wheels.
Today I just bought my friend's Sector 9 longboard. Unlike the RetroSpec, it isnt a drop-down so it feels like I'm flying. A bit....weird to get used to. But I like it. It's smaller than the other one and the wheels are softer. I'm tempted to put some better (faster/smoother) bearings in it but I'm not sure what to go with if I do
I know this is 3 years late but I love the Shark Wheels.
They are epic
My first board was a sector 9 board which lasted for 4ish years of daily use, very solid board, until I left it in my underground storage room for too long and it got moldy beyond repair. That’s why I’m here, thinking of getting another longboard, possibly another sector nine. They’re definitely capable of making great quality long boards that can take a beating.
what about quest boards are they better then a skateboard for cruising around a town?
your videos are so underrated your quality standards are very very good
Thanks so much bro! This was really helpful. You broke things down so they were easy to understand. I used to skateboard in high school. I’m gonna try out longboarding now. I’ll probably get a Loaded mini cruiser with a kicktail and soft wheels.
Been here since 200 and am glad that you are doing so well, I watched all your videos full through to help with the algorithm since you deserve a more subs, cheers mate
Mannn that means a lot, thank you. Really appreciate that!
This channel is so underrated.. Your content is amazing, keep it up!

Just the video I needed to watch, all clear now. Thanks a lot, a freestyle board is now waiting for me 🙌🤩
I started boarding earlier this year on a Kryptonics (very affordable but I wouldn't buy again) then a Sector 9 but I wasn't completely comfortable until I bought my Landyahtz Tugboat! After trying out cruisers at a skate shop it was the best board for me and it totally helped me gain confidence in my skating! 1000/10 would highly recommend!
Here’s a tip for budget; go to a local skate shop! They have longboards and everything you need, no shipping and often they’re marked down a little bit for the same quality :)
Thanks for the vids, Team Shred. Super helpful. Beginner question: I want to set up a longboard as a surfskate - do I want a firm deck or flexy? (want to have fun carving and practice surfing skills)
After buying a cruiser earlier this year I don’t WANT to be spending anymore money on boards but... I’ve kinda been wanting a longboard but I for the life of me couldn’t figure out what kind I wanted/needed. This video was very helpful though! Now I feel like I got a better idea of what I need so thank you!!
Great channel. I'd like to bring up: pumping, pushpump. I began in the end of my 40ies, so these very low decks & setup that tends to go pretty straight helped to avoid nasty falls. I also had good experience with downhill as a cruiser as they are super stable, a bit difficult to go around corners on sidewalks...
Suggestion For New Longboarders: If you have a low budget, upgrade your board with Zealous bearings. They’re great bearings that are under $20. Just remember not to clean or relube them though, since they use a special nano-ceramic lube. This shouldn’t matter though since they'll last a few years without any cleaning.
I have my 15 year old red bones in my penny nickle board, and they still glide smooth as butter. I've taken them completely apart 3 times, cleaned them with rubbing alcohol, then re-lubed with red bones speed cream.
@@brianfischer5609 I personally love red bones, but I usually dont recommend them to new skaters because of the higher maintenance

Thanks Josh, I appreciate that!
Thank you so much for making this video, I'm gonna see how I like the Icarus longboard from Loaded. Please make more videos in the future, these are amazing.
The Sector 9 Lookouts are also very good beginner boards, I went from a penny to the Bico Lookout (beautiful board, $200) and I'm honestly very pleased with it. Fast, very easy to balance on, and great quality bamboo. Flexes pretty well without feeling like it will snap. The only thing I have a problem with it is the bearings, but Zumies carries REDS bearings for pretty cheap, which makes the board feel like butter. I use my board mostly to get from point A to point B, as well as just free cruising for enjoyment. One of the best investments I've ever made.

@@rajs4012 Personally i don't really have any experience with the brand, but it depends on how serious you are. I'm sure by the reviews that it's decent enough to learn and cruise around on. If you've never skated before it could be worth it, but you've also got to realize that at that price the trucks and wheels will probably be pretty low grade compared to quality cast trucks.
If you've never rolled on a board and can accept that you'll need to upgrade as you learn then it seems like a good deal, but if you've skated in the past and have some experience, you might be better off just going with a higher quality complete.
Just make sure before you skate it to look at it carefully, inspect the trucks and make sure they're straight, both in the mounting and in the bushings. Check that the pivot cups are flush and the same depth, it's not that uncommon for the baseplates to be machined incorrectly. Make sure the bearings spin without feeling wobbly or chunky. They don't need to spin freely, they're packed with grease so they feel 'stiff' at first, as long as they feel smooth and straight. If everything works then just learn on it, figure out what you like and don't like, and maybe break stuff, replacing it with better quality stuff you KNOW you want as you learn what fits your style.
And remember, bushings can be cheaply bought in stiffer and softer durometers, throwing a different set on can change the feel entirely if it feels either too stiff or mushy for your weight and style.
me too. 😆
@@sydneytas oh cool cool, yeah based from what I know it seems like a good choice for beginners.
this would’ve been useful a couple months ago when i ordered my first longboard 😅
Stoked on your channel man, amazing video production! I'll hopefully eventually getting into making videos like this soon! Maybe you can show me a thing or two.
I really like my Globe Prowler, I had that thing for many years now and it never let me down. I still ride the standard wheels and bearings that came with it and both work flawless, the deck also held up really well and is made up of bamboo on mine.
I also drove it in the rain many times and the board did great in this weather, although you shouldn't drive in the rain too often, mostly because of the bearings.
The only thing is that the shape of the board may feel a little weird for some of you, I always call it a fish shape, but I don't think it's really called like that.
Have fun with longboarding my friends 🤙🏼
I kind of want a magneto bamboo longboard wish me luck its $130
The moment I said that he said the brands were not good lol
Wow the most likes I've ever had is 2. Thanks guys lol
@@laurenc1376 I bought a swelltech or state instead
@@laurenc1376 I bought a Swelltech surf skate instead
well shit...I did too..
Some extra comments from someone who's been longboarding for a while:
For dancing, I'd say get a topmount dancer so you have big kicks. Landyachtz, bastl and timber are good makes.
For cruising, if you seriously want something to commute on or go a long distance, get a dropthrough, dropdown or doubledrop. They get your foot as close to the ground as possible and it makes it easier to push. I commute in a city and use a landyachtz switch with big soft wheels. I spend less effort and go much quicker than people on cruisers. The lack of a tail and big turning circle hasn't really been that much of an issue, YMMV.
For downhill/freeride, everyone has to start somewhere. Remember to get slide gloves and protection. Landyachtz, rocket and rayne are good makes. Learn to slide on a small hill, preferably with someone to teach you.
If you are unsure you can get a dancer as you can try light downhill/freeride on them. If you like downhill then get a proper downhill/freeride deck.
Yea I got a switchblade and the turning radius has caused some bails but overall it's a great board.
This is awesome info, thanks for taking the time to share this
This is good to hear, I'm not interested in doing more than cruising but I live in a suburban/rural area so I was looking at drop throughs for extra stability on bad roads. But everywhere I've looked when I try to research good cruising ones tells me to just get a minicruiser. Will continue my quest for a dropthrough for cruising!
I'm still pretty new, and bought a tan tien from a friend a few years back, and recently a loaded coyote. You're 100% right, I've travelled with my tan tien and its been a solid form of transport in 3 different states ive lived in now. I can not recommend loaded enough, I love them so much. it's lasted so long and has so many miles, 0 complaints.
Just got a loaded board, very excited.
Subbed at 400, already at 2k... growing up too fast 😪 fr tho, another banger. This channel is gonna be big.
Yooo thanks Hayden, appreciate that!
already at 9k now, predicting 50k soon the videos are just too high quality not too
I also recommended Yocaher brand as well, it is in the midrange price category and the shipping is incorporated in the price. It is online. They have pretty solid boards, (my longboard is literally in my profile picture). Great video dude!
Holy fuck was this the most honest video I’ve ever watched. Thank you.
You deserve a min of a million subs bruv, your videos are clean, you speak plain and straightforward and bring out some really great analogies, thank you so much for this, it helped a lot. You are awesome
Really appreciate that! Thanks for the kind words
I have a question...
I was considering getting that platypus type so I can turn a corner if I needed to. I realise you can tighten it and it isn't really supposed to turn like this...but after tightening I still end up getting the board to touch the wheels. Figured the platypus shape would be the best for getting around campus and taking a tight turn if I need to. Is this the best type for longer rides and tighter turns?
I have a long board recommendation: Beercan Boards they are good quality mid range in terms of price and they are really cool
Thanks for the tips, this was very helpful. 🤟🏽
I just got my long board and already put tons of stickers on it💀 this was super helpful so thanks you for that dude
Bustin and Santa Cruz for the mid-tier longboards
I bought a drop down longboard and it's the best for me
Ye, came here found your video because online shops don't give me any info on how to pick the right board.
Thank you for this!
Thanks. That did help. I want to go riding with my wife when she goes biking. Just cruising down the concrete trails.
