    I gifted myself a dancing longboard a little over a week ago for my upcoming 56 birthday. In that short time, I've added two more boards for my boys and their sister rides her kick scooter while we practice. I hope to be able to ghost-ride (jump off, run, and jump back on) like you in the next week or so.
    Same-day Update: Ghost Ride complete!

      don't worry! skating can be fun with someone but if you need help to first start balancing and getting on, there's no shame in that. about 2 weeks ago I had someone help me get on all the time and now i can just simply cruise around without help

    I love how genuine and wholesome this video is.
    I in the last 3 weeks bought two different longboards.
    Bought an electric longboard first but that was what open my eyes to push longboards and I quickly discovered longboard dancing.
    After riding an electric skateboard for 2 months straight and then buying a push longboard, they were two different worlds.
    A lot of how you felt in the beginning of your learning in this video is basically a lot of how I was feeling and still do. Still don't even have a full month of push longboard experience yet

    Not sure how, but I managed to sprain my wrist a few years ago when I first got a longboard. It's never been the same.
    Just saying that not to discourage longboarding. I'm still longboarding.
    Saying this to not ride like an idiot.
    Well, I can't say I was riding. I was on flat smooth ground and I wasn't moving at all. And I still managed to kill my wrist. It's 100% my own problem.

    beginner skater girl here! I’ve been longboarding for 11 days (as per the time i’ve posted this comment), and i’ve learned a lot! so i thought i’d write down a bunch of stuff i picked up online and through real life experiences. (do note that english isn’t my first language, i hope my grammar’s good huhu)
    1. Do your research! (skating style, different boards, beginner tips)
    - it’s easy to just get a random board and start. but i really recommend doing your research on how everything works before buying anything. this is cuz your first board relies on what skating style you wanna try out (for example, I’m more into cruising and dancing. so for practicality i got a board that’s more for cruising but has similar characteristics to a dancing board)
    - ask people who skate for some tips! or join communities online and read a bunch of their stuff. i found that theres only so much you could research on your own
    2. Get good shoes!
    make sure your shoes are good for skating! the cashier from where i bought my board from recommends a sole thats flat and bends well for beginners so you could really feel the board. when your a little more intermediate, a sole thats a little thicker and sturdier is better since you’ll be using them as brakes. generally, its recommended to get shoes that are padded inside so theyre easier on your feet :))
    3. Bend your knees, Learn different ways to stop, and wear atleast 1 kind of protective gear
    - this i am still trying to get used to 😭 its for both stability and safety so make sure to keep them in mind
    - for the protective gear, i used to not wear any. but after a few close calls, i’ve gotten a glimpse of how important they really are HUHU
    6. don’t be afraid to get hurt and fall
    - I’ve been told that get injuries are a rite of passage. so bruises, cuts, and scraps are super normal. you won’t get anywhere without risk nor will your journey really be worth it.
    - as a nursing student, i suggest to be prepared when you DO get hurt. if possible, try to carry around a first aid kit (bandages, gauze, bandaids, antiseptic). knowledge on basic first aid on open wounds, joints, and bones are pretty cool to have also!
    - for me, i got my first injury during the first time I rode my dad’s longboard (this being my serious first time on a skateboard, EVER). I got a skin abrasion on the side of my foot thats about half an inch big because i didn’t wear the right shoes like my dad said 😅 girly my dad’s board flew forward and i did the splits 😭 after seeing my life flash before my eyes i was on my neighborhood’s pavement 😭😭😭 but even after that experience i found that i still loved what i was doing! so I patched my foot up, put on the right shoes, and practiced more (with a lot more caution)
    5. Just don’t give a fuck
    - i find that people are too busy with their own lives to mind you. as long as your not in their way, relax! their judgements mean nothing in the long run. if other skaters judge you for being a beginner, its their fault being so sucky and weird.
    7. Appreciate the small things, celebrate small wins!
    - it could literally be a good outfit or a new playlist, whatever gets you excited to pick up your skateboard and practice works!
    - i find that being excited about the tinniest things like balancing properly, turning, or going a little faster is great for progress! Like earlier, i got over the fear of going downhill and turning!! even with a few close calls achieving these small goals are soooo worth it!
    8. practice frequently!
    - skating is a lifestyle. so incorporating it in everyday life makes it easier to get better!
    i hope this helps!

      Totally feel you on the confidence thing, I had a few stumbles like you saw in this video and immediately afterward I'd feel SO tentative. I figure it's just like riding a bike, I've been doing that for so long I don't even think about the mechanics of it now, my body just does it and has 100% faith that i'll be able to stay upright. Someday we will get there with roller skates and longboarding too :)

    fun fact it’s easier to go over cracks if you jump up off your board instead of trying to tilt the wheels of a longboard. if you hop a little so your full weight isn’t on the board when the front wheels hit the crack it has the same effect

    I love this!! I wanted to learn to longboard when I was 14 with my brother and his friends, but finally learned with my husband (bf at the time) when I was 19. I love how freeing it makes me feel, like I could fly heh. Haven’t done it in quite a few years, but watching this makes me want to get back into it. 💛 Would love to learn dance moves, too.
    Idk if you learned how to stop, but foot breaking is what I’ve learned to do. Need smooth shoes, like Vans. Helps to slow down too when you’re going down a steeper hill. Only problem is your right foot always wears holes in them, but I think it’s the easiest way and your board doesn’t go rolling off.
    Can’t wait to see you keep going!

    when you put your foot forward to push more. thats when you stop
    I see this video is progression, multiple clips when you're at different levels.
    I havent made it to the end yet. I'm at 9:11. Complete coincidence, I promise.
    right at 9:04 when you put your foot forward on the board so you can push with your other, you could drag the pushing foot to slow down or just put it down. Another way to stop is just to carve a lot. turning slows you down, and once you're going slow enough you can put your foot down. Stopping going uphill is easy as hell. Stopping going down hill, you could learn to power slide, or just carve the shit out of that board. Going real fast could also use a power slide.

    Though I started longboarding before the COVID lockdowns, I really took to it during the lockdowns. To me, practice has always been fun, even when I am seriously messing up a new skill that I am still learning. Fun has been a key motivator. And sometimes, it does help to see how a trick is done before trying it for the first time. Now, some folks are intrigued watching me, wondering if they, too, would have so much fun longboarding.

      Aww I'm sorry you feel like that :( I feel like following writers makes me want to keep getting better at writing, seeing the Olympic hockey team made me want to improve my hockey skills - do you think there's something maybe a bit different with painting?

    • @lisamann6669
      @lisamann6669 3 роки тому

      @@AllySheehan i’m unsure - it could just be a question of selfesteem and of how content you are with yourself but it might also be different with painting.
      I’m not trying to say other peoples ary can’t inspire me, it sure can! But it can also dishearten me to see other people have such a distinctive style which i struggle with a lot or seeing them do a certain technique very well which I struggle to do.
      In the end it probably just comes down to being able to motivate yourself to train.

    I attempted a hill on day two, like a BIG one that had no possible end to it besides leaping off and hopefully clearing a large footpath to tumble onto grass. I did it, pulled something in my foot and grazed my hands and knee. I rolled over 3 times and my board just smashed the curb. Funnest shit ever and I got off lucky, I advise coming up with a safe escape plan then me and dont listen to 200s rap while skating... makes you do reaaal dumb shit.

If you skate mongo ik its not popular but it's okay do what's best for you love the positive vibez from this video.

    yeah. if you want to invent something dont talk about it. send a letter to yourself in the mail or something of your idea to prove the time you thought of it maybe in case it comes down to that. researching if the idea exists and then going into the patenting is next. i tried to invent something but i sucked at it and ended up failing. so perhaps dont listen to me also (always believe half of what you hear and none of what you read)

    • @johnk.264
      @johnk.264 4 місяці тому

      I don't know... It just seems a little odd if you've always been skate/longboarding on regular wood boards with grip tape.
      Also I'm not sure if it's optimal for a beginner because the lack of concave makes it easier to fall of when carving/ taking faster turns and makes it more difficult to maneuver. And I'm not sure how the material would chip on the nose/tail when you fall off and the board slams into a wall.
      BUT if the special design motivates you to hop on the board more often and brings more fun than a regular then it's the right one for you... That is very subjective :)
      I don't know how your current progression is with longboarding but in the video while pushing, your front foot was too close to the center of the board. Try to move it closer to the nose of the board bit by bit while pushing until it feels more comfortable. And bending your front knee more while pushing will make you so much more stable and makes pushing less exhausting. Like really engage your quadriceps while pushing. And bending your knees in general is a good Idea because the closer your center of mass is to the ground the easier balance and carving etc. will become. I hope my Tips are helpful to you. Keep on skating it's a great hobby 🤙🏻 also such an inspiring video :)

    Ally your editing is FIRE!! What are the main differences between your pink and purple board? I get that the sizes are different, so would you say the main difference is that the purple longer board is better for balance and stability, or is there another reason? :)

    • @AllySheehan
      @AllySheehan  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much!!
      So the longest (dancer) board is definitely easier for balance and stability, because it's longer it ends up sitting lower to the ground - you can see in side on clips in this video how i kind of sink into it?? So it feels like you're not up so high, whereas the shorter boards don't "sink" as much so you're a bit higher up.
      The shorter board (platypus size) is great for carving and sharper turns, but that also just has to do with how tight/loose the trucks are.
      Basically the longest board is more fun for cruising and dancing, the smaller board is better for going fast and turning fast. There is probably some kind of better description on their website!

      @findleypollock760 3 роки тому

      @@AllySheehan Thanks Ally! This might sound like an odd question, but do your hips get sore from long boarding? I feel like with carving might twist my hips to one direction and cause some soreness (I already have hip issues).

    • @AllySheehan
      @AllySheehan  3 роки тому

      @@findleypollock760 not odd at all, that's a great question to ask :)
      My calf muscle on the side i'm balancing (not kicking) with gets a bit sore, but honestly that's it!
      By week four i actually use my hips less for carving than i thought i would in that earlier clip when i talked about turning.
      If you watch the clips where i'm carving underground, i feel like its mostly just my feet doing the work now!
