Funny timing for me; I watched an episode of Rizzoli and Isles yesterday that featured a Spyker C8 Spyder. The centre-lock wheels (specifically the associated socket wrench) were a significant plot device. Somebody writing on that show is a real automotive enthusiast. Interesting cars seem to pop up in quite a few episodes, and the characters will comment on specs and other minutia, getting the details right in a surprising way.
This has to be one of the best cars when it comes to materials. There's so many luxury cars, even the highest end rolls that use plastic for no reason except to spare a buck and some effort, but not this car. It's almost impossible to find plastic anywhere. They really went all out. It's one of the things I love the most about this car, and its successor. Also, I think one of the reasons the mirrors are a giant piece of aluminum is because they might have expected or even intended people to use them to open the door further.
Correct me if I am wrong. The sticker that is shown for the Spyker lists the V8 as an Audi 4.2L 40 valve V8, which was equipped in the B6/B7 Audi S4, which I previously owned. The first R8 had the 32V direct injection V8. Also, the engine that is in the Spyker has the same intake manifold as my S4.
Thats not an S4 engine. Those use chains. its the 4.2 from the 2003-2006 A8 D3 BFM. Even more so look at the auction listing, It literally says "June 2022: Timing belt, water pump, thermostat, idler pulley, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, camshaft seals, and serpentine belt replaced, engine oil and filter changed, brake fluid flushed, transmission fluid flushed, coolant flushed, engine air filter replaced, throttle body cleaned, A/C compressor replaced, rear lid struts replaced, door hinges/pivots adjusted, shifter mechanism adjusted, reverse lockout point set, set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S installed"

This is such a special car. I've only ever seen one naturally on the road, and it was years and years ago here in SoCal, well before I was a car enthusiast. It was my big brother who I was with whom pointed it out to me as we drove past it!
Nice! My brother has worked over there. I've been in the factory with him after hours for a private tour. The Le Mans car was also there. The workmanship and detail of those roadgoing cars was really impressive. I think he said Busta Rhymes and his entourage once visited the factory, he got to shake his hand.
I went to the dealer that had these in Portland Or. I was amazed at how everything single part was specially made, sometimes hand maid, for this car. The sound of the engine was beautiful. The salesman said they just weren't selling. Probably because of no name recognition.

Yeah, even if you're not in love with the design, but the amount of detail shows how much effort was put into it, and it just makes you look. And the more you look, the more you discover, and before you know it, you're actually liking this car.
It's gorgeous. That steering wheel is indeed so much more beautiful than the follow up one with the airbag (I think that one was fitted in your previous review)
If Spyker ever made's an Automatic they should make it in to a lever like an aeroplanes control lever, when you push the lever all the way you get would get it in to a D gear, push it back in R gear and straight up N/P gear and next to a gear lever there would be a red lever which would activate the sport mode if you push both levers together.
Spyker are the kind of small, artisanal manufacturer who are prepared to think outside the box. The design blueprints for the Neo drew their inspiration from the aerodynamics of a diving falcon, the composure of a ballet dancer, the curve of a suggestively raised eyebrow, and the assertiveness of a cluster bomb. This is the kind of pedigree you need.
This car is so rare, so imagine my shock when someone showed up with one at a local car show. I flipped out. Barely anyone realized just why it was so special and rare and either ignored it or just cared about the looks.
I was waiting for this one! BTW: Spyker is still a Company as of now, they didn't disband. There are quite a few Spyker C8s in German Ownership including the C8 Aileron, which i hope you get to review sometime! The C8 Aileron is even more amazing and even quirkier if you'd believe that! @@curtisalex456 Nope. They're only back recently. Honestly, after two failed attempts, not expecting much. Too bad because they made some awesome, unique cars.
The Spyker C8, what a car! As you may know I'm from Holland where the Spyker cars were produced. Spyker's heritage lies in a company that started out as a producer of cars (fist under licence of Mercedes Benz, producing there own cars from 1900) and merged with a Dutch company that produced planes. The first cars they produced in the late 1800's up until 1925 when they went bust were very invinitive with four wheel drive and the very first car with a 6 cylinder engine. To many prestiges races and low sales due to high prices made the company go bust several times. Car production stopped in WW1 because the army needed planes. The New Spyker company started in 1999 and produced there first car in 2000. The C8 was the model that started the brand to set off and got good ratings and was even reviewd by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear. History took the company back to it's roots an the same mistakes were made. In 2006 the company bought a Formule 1 team and for there second year in F1 they bought Ferrari engines but forgot to buy the much needed software to make the engines run. The company also started building racing cars for the FIA GT endurance races, running the 4.2 V8 engines produced by VW and Audi. They would run under the name of Spyker Squadron and weren't very succesfull. They made countless mistakes in F1 and even the Scuderia Ferrari couldn't look away and helped them out by giving them a much needed base software tune for the engines Ferrari provided for the F1 cars of Spyker F1. More mistakes were made due to the same problems they stumbled on back in the first Spyker company, cars were to high priced and sales were very low, so there was little money to pay the F1 team and a pair of experienced drivers. Only a year later in 2007 the F1 team was sold with a loss of 30 million dollar on the purchase price alone!! The boss of Spyker, Victor Muller quickly found a new money pit and tried to buy Saab of of GM. This also went horribly wrong and by the time he found the money, GM pulled the plug saying that Victor had tried to by Saab With money from a Russian Billionaire who had a strong bond with China. Spyker was lost, an F1 team was lost and Saab was lost due to huge mistakes made over a very short period of time, just 12 years. A sad story but luckely they made some amazing cars in the beginning, the C8 and the C12 (which was never produced but one prototype was build which was supposed to use the W12 engine from VW) aswell as the Spyker D12 Peking to Paris, an SUV not competing with BMW or Porsche but with Bentley and Rolls Royce. The D12 was to become the ultimate of the ultimate luxury SUV with a Bentley derived Biturbo W12 engine. But even before it took of into production the money was drained and non were made. I hope the cars that are made will live a long life and maybe someday I can get my hands on one.
That shifter mechanism is awesome. The coolest aspect of this car and definitely the coolest shifter of any car ever. The way everything looks so analog and mechanical is beautiful as well. I wish more cars did this.
Its a BFM from the D3 A8. not D2 S8. Super easy to tell cause the valve covers are not interchangeable between them, even has the A8s fuel rail and wiring harness layout.
@@k8-sr495 No. BFM is just a timing belt driven 4.2 5v engine. BFM has different oil cooler, accessories, only ever came in automatic crankshaft layout, coolant cooled alternator, updated intake plenum flap design. You can swap the Audi D2 S8 cams into it and have it retuned with bigger fuel injectors and timing to get around 380-400hp N/A. You can do 450lb-ft before you need to change the rods. Same goes for the rods in 1.8T, and 2.7T. The BGH, BGJ 4.2 is found in the Phaeton that would be similar to the one in the A8 D3, same with the 4.2 AXQ found in the Touareg. Just typical Doug, he occasionally say "boring" about fonts, buttons or whatever when he reviews a car, but when he reviews other cars, he prefer buttons.
This car appeared in the 2007 film War, driven by Jet Li. It appeared in the movie for maybe 10 mins tops but that was enough... the movie did a perfect hero-car matchup... the whole time while watching you were almost certain that it had hidden gadgets and hidden tech even though they are never used... obviously because Jet Li is enough deadly on his own.
Yes, his review style and how he is on camera has changed a lot since then, in my opinion. My guess is this car is so cool and weird he wanted to redo it
I'll admit I'm Dutch but man, Spyker did such a great job on this car. I remember seeing one every now and then and not being particularly impressed (just an Audi engine I thought at the time), but the focus on design has put it through the test of time with flying colours. Especially for a low volume automaker! This car has touch areas and shapes that make its experience almost unrivalled by cars from the same period. It's a real shame it didn't work out for the brand. I recall they had quite a promising SUV design on display circa 2008 (forward thinking!). And of course Spyker almost got to own Saab. Thanks for the review!
@@pinut187 nee, dat ben ik niet. I wouldn’t call a half year of both companies hemorrhaging money and barely producing vehicles on uncovered loans a successful ownership per se… They tried.
That is one of the most gorgeous car interiors I have ever seen. I imagine the interior door handles are "upside down" to facilitate opening the doors with the hand furthest away, in the Dutch manner. This ensure one looks over one's shoulder for hazards (e.g., cyclists) before it is opened.

Thank you Doug, As always your presentations are remarkably enjoyable. Your exuberance is unmatched, and that makes you a remarkably likable human. .....like me!!!! Cheers!
Spyker and Pagani have the best interior designs, nothing really comes close, not a single switch or button in the interior is plastic or stolen from a parts bin, and the exposed shifter linkage is so cool i love it, the definition of how a special supercar interior should be.
Now this is a wicked cool design for a roadster!! Love the propeller use with the vents and steering wheel! Don't you wish Doug would get excited about reviewing a car he already had reviewed before? Funny to look up the D8 Peking to Paris (great name!) - I forgot about this thing. From 2008, it really was ahead of its time and had a kind of ungainly shape that now is commonplace from the GLE Coupe to even the Toyota Crown. Cool cars.
I've driven one and it's pretty fun. Feels like some sort of weird kit car. The top of the windshield was the flat-out weirdest thing I've ever experienced.

It's the same thing, check points, Doug score, etc.
I could see if old video was 5 minutes but no its the same time and nearly same review.
I looked one over and found no plastic, I'd expect there to be some, somewhere, but I didn't see any at least in the interior, just leather and metal.
Either way, it is not the RS4 V8, which is the point I was trying to make.
@@TPC-ll5yy Look up "C8 Spyder #016 - SpykerEnthousiast" this is the car used in the movie "War" and shows it being disassembled.
Been to their factory in the Netherlands back in the aughts. Didn't get to drive one unfortunately. Damn shame they didn't gain enough popularity to keep them afloat. Really unique and gorgeous cars. Definitely on my dream garage list.

I don't think I have ever seen Doug smile so much in a car or use the word cool as often. Only a great car can do that !
I love the spyker. It was the first super car I got to sit in when I was a kid, so it’s always had a special place in my heart
I have never seen this car before but i love it. I love how Doug always finds weird but cool cars to review
You’re in luck then because he’s reviewed it before so you can watch him do it twice.
Quality, styling, and cool factor should have all been a 10, not an 8. Either way - I was happy to watch another review of a Spyker!
23:34 Im surprised the Range Rover flying up on Doug’s rear end didn’t give him a heart attack.

Can’t believe Doug didn’t notice the KTC toolbox. The Nepros screwdriver matches the car so well! Interesting it has German drivetrain and Japanese toolbox…
The Spyker C8 was / is my favorite supercar of all time. Having seen a few of them in person, they are just stunning in some of the details
I got to drive one of these as a Valet back In college. It was insanely cool to drive. Best car I ever had on the drive by far!
Glorious and silly, done with an artisan eye for detail! To quote Jeremy Clarkson: "It works brilliantly parked outside the best restaurant in town."
I got to go for a ride in a Spyker a couple of years ago. Definitely a bucket list car. The attention to detail is astonishing. Like nothing else😊
I'm sure there is at least one in the US.

Why would someone know that you are from The Netherlands? Not Holland…
That shifter mechanism is awesome. The coolest aspect of this car and definitely the coolest shifter of any car ever. The way everything looks so analog and mechanical is beautiful as well. I wish more cars did this.
Unfortunately cars today are trying to look like cell phones on wheels with all the exaggerated display on the exterior & interior.
pagani does it too very cool indeed
Great car, great review. Just one thing, it wasn't an R8 engine, it was a re-fettled version of the Audi D2 S8 engine.
Its a BFM from the D3 A8. not D2 S8. Super easy to tell cause the valve covers are not interchangeable between them, even has the A8s fuel rail and wiring harness layout.
@@3n3ly7m9 Has this DFM engine been used in any other Audi car prior to the year 2003?
Then you have the ART 4.2 and AWN 4.2 would be found in the C5 A6. All of them are reliable 4.2, and the last good ones made before they switched over to Chain driven.
That gear shift lever is on another level.
Ohey the only car I've been as in love with as I have since it came out.
I really wish there was more content around this car. It's such a perfect combo of modern and art deco type vibes
The way that Range Rover stopped so close behind the Spyker while Doug was driving it made me audibly gasp in fear lmao

I feel like Spyker is the type of car company I would make if I had billions of dollars and just wanted to make the coolest car possible. No cost cutting with sneaking in plastics, no cynical business decisions, just pure uncompromising quality for no other reason than the simple love and devotion to craftsmanship. There really aren't many companies like Spyker these days
Yep, but that was also the downfall, to bad, we are still proud of it. They even drove the 24 h of Le Mans, not briljant, but pure as marketing.

I believe you are correct. Though I believe it was not just a one off. I’ve seen (Y-tube) at the very least, one white and one black. Very odd, but it sorta was the first ultra-luxury and speed SUVs (V8 & W12s).
Funny to look up the D8 Peking to Paris (great name!) - I forgot about this thing. From 2008, it really was ahead of its time and had a kind of ungainly shape that now is commonplace from the GLE Coupe to even the Toyota Crown. Cool cars.
