    You should add: Just because it's a very small place.... doesn't mean that you can travel around quickly. Cabs might be faster but I use the buses (tal-linja card) and going somewhere just a few kilometers away can take a really, really long time and you need to factor that in when making plans.

    • @RyanSmith-hv4qk
      @RyanSmith-hv4qk 5 місяців тому

      You should add : if you are on a seriously low budget then it can take a long time to travel around…. I am just back home from a holiday in Malta where i spent 800€ in 6 days. I spent at least an hour per day in taxis and they where not even expensive in comparison to Britain. Public transport more so busses specifically are always much much slower at getting you to your destination but also much cheaper. Even the bus here in Scotland where I live a short journey takes 1hr 30+ minutes to complete from Airdrie to Motherwell where as if I got a taxi or drove in my car it would take 15 minutes…. Yes it is more expensive but such is life lol

    • @cliffarroyo9554
      @cliffarroyo9554 5 місяців тому +1

      @@RyanSmith-hv4qk I have not enjoyed the few times I've been in cars in Malta (too many cars in too little space and drivers acting too crazy) so I stay with the buses (at least they're bigger than most other vehicles.... O will say bus service has generally improved in the last 4or so years and is more reliable (if agonizingly slow).

    I can't help but smile because I can relate to you so much about the driving in Malta part of your video. I also get heated up when talking about driving here as I also drive in Malta. It is somehow such a relief that it's not only me who feels this way about the drivers and pedestrians here, why they drive like that and when you think about it, the small stupid road accidents should not happen if they just follow the rules and give way to others when needed. 1-2 seconds to wait, stop can avoid these road accidents and traffic.

      Please consider the amount of cars running around most of them taxi with foreigners driving with a lot of motor cycle mostly with foreigners driving
      Compare the population per 1 km squared with other countries for sure it s with the highest. And this is one with makes driving and parking the way it 8s

    Your honest straight forward comments are refreshing from the point of view of this born & breed 60+ year Maltese native who has seen this Island change over the decades. You have discovered most of our warts, bothered to look below the surface of our official "tourist" spiel and still fundamentally "like" us & this rocky Island home! 🙏

    In my country Nigeria which is in the western part of Africa, Ehen is a normal everyday word for us and it's used in 3different ways, it would be difficult to see a Nigerian not using that in their everyday sentences, ehen is used mainly when speaking our broken english called pidgin english it's used as an exclamation in 3different ways, so if you see a Nigerian using that term you must understand it was gotten from home, you are either using it to concur to what the person is saying, or you use it when you are surprised at a statement the person makes cos you weren't aware, or you use it after daring a person in a conversation

I am so ashamed that I have never taken the time to learn the language but I know that you are spot on with your coments of not over doing it. Maybe a bit beyond the scope of this video but I am Maltese and I can tell you that a lot of Maltese people complain about fireworks, particularly the extremely noisy (bombs) petard. I love the colourful night time ones, but something needs to be done regarding petards + we don't need launches at 8am. (Where I live they do an entire week of this, barely 300m away from my house) Traditions change and evolve over time (the same thing happened in Italy). So by all means, complain because a lot of us dislike the noisy bombs/petards, just because something is traditional does not mean it cannot be altered.

    • @ds5379
      @ds5379 Рік тому +4

      Before you try and change the traditions of a country, the country needs to feel that you belong there enough to request a change in traditions.
      Maltese people complaining about fireworks is one thing (they can't be told to go back to their country). Someone who has been living here for 2 years complaining about fireworks is something totally different.

    • @MapperMalta
      @MapperMalta Рік тому +1

    Be aware that buses can be unreliable in country areas, being infrequent and prone to cancellation or being full up. Also, they mostly stop running by around 10pm, so plan your evenings accordingly. The narrow roads and the heavy traffic also mean that Malta is dangerous for cycling: so much so that you seldom see anyone on a bike. Apart from that, Malta is a beautiful place.

    Malta is my country, I am definately Maltese and have always lived in Malta. But it is true the so called "Festi" have become heavy to support to say the least. When I was little the Festa would be just during the weekend and we would have only the Church Fireworks and some few more from the Band clubs. It was nice, simple and it truly was religious. Unfortunately nowadys the Festi turned into " a Sodoma and Gomorra", I see nothing religious in these Festi anymore. It's just an excuse to drink and party for a whole week, and for the Band clubs to compete on who will have the biggest and most bombastic Fireworks of all. But obviously this is just my opinion, no offenece to no one.

    What’s funny to me is that last month, we spent about 3 weeks driving around Sicily before flying from Catania into Luqa, and I honestly told our taxi driver the day we arrived in Malta that I was so glad for the calm driving! It seems that even the crazy driving in Malta feels like a slow Sunday cruise when compared to Sicilian driving! I think I would have been worried about trying to learn to drive on the other side of the road, however. That definitely messes with your mind when you first experience it.

    Maltese is very close to classical (Medieval) Arabic. Many Maltese, especially the educated ones, are fluent in Italian. English is the island's second language.

    Great video! We're visiting Malta soon and I'd like your input on whether it's worth renting a car to visit the main sights of the country. Also none of us have ever driven a right-hand steering wheel car, in a left-side driving country haha, so coupled with the erratic driving of the locals that you described, should we perhaps just stick to buses to get around?

      @AlexinMalta Malta guide book is simple to read. It is well fragmented by section of good places to go, the best beach to go, the place to visit, some of your favorite places to dine and many more. Who ever want to come to Malta, Alex guide book is a must to buy. I can feel you have put your heart and soul on it, and you did it !! So well done Alex, after your success of UA-cam, Alex malta guide book should be the next. I suggest you do a partnership with travel agency who sell Malta ticket and your Alex Malta guide book should be included for their trip. You will be able to sell volume of your Alex Malta guide book with those travel agency and it is a win win.

    To be fair.. there's more beaches than just those 3. Malta is an island..the shoreline is full of beaches! Most of them, in the south, you don't konw about because they are not popular with foreigners. Theres are also a lot of secluded beaches, if you know how to find them, where you can even be swimming by yourself!

    Hi Alex! I'm going to visit Malta soon for the first time! I'm also thinking about moving there in the future (TEFL). Thank you for giving all the information! I was wondering and hope you don't mind me asking: are you living with a roommate?
    I can imagine it being hard (financially and socially) to live alone (but also nice, haha). Best wishes, Karin!
