Great video! I am the guy who bright up Malta during your 1 million subscriber live event a couple of months ago. Malta was a trip of a lifetime for us. I would also suggest don’t miss out on visiting the Hypogeum and other spectacular historic archaeological sites around Malta! Malta has some of the oldest and most important sites in the world!!!
Be aware that buses can be unreliable in country areas, being infrequent and prone to cancellation or being full up. Also, they mostly stop running by around 10pm, so plan your evenings accordingly. The narrow roads and the heavy traffic also mean that Malta is dangerous for cycling: so much so that you seldom see anyone on a bike. Apart from that, Malta is a beautiful place.
(Melanie here) My husband is Maltese and we have been to Malta twice ( last visit -October 2023). We really enjoy staying in Mellieha Bay (have done a hotel one time and an airbnb) which has a very nice beach area. We toured a bomb shelter in Mellieha that was a moving experience for my husband since his father would go into those during WW2. Also, I can definitely recommend - Mdina (interesting, peaceful walking around) and eat at Fontanella (worth the wait for the view and the food - pastizzis and cakes are fantastic among other things). Also we had a great tour of Valetta. Get pastizzis at Manuela (certified authentic). Ferry to Gozo is reliable and then use the hop on hop off bus on the island.
@@davebonello1944 you walk down Kingsway from the top end of Valletta, then you come to a large square to your right, just past two red English phone boxes (hope they are still there) you will see loads of tables and umbrellas. Enjoyed your video. I visit Malta often can I also say, you don't have to drive. Public transport is very cheap and ultra reliable you can go from one end of the island to the other for less than 3 Euros . Then get the ferry to Gozo (a cheap alternative to the tourist boat trips). Also Mosta is lovely to visit especially the church and the unexploded bomb from World War 2. St Georges Bay has a lovely sandy beach and on the public transport route too. Im from the 🇬🇧 UK .
Your video convinced me to add Malta to my list this year. Thanks, Mark! I'm sure the locals appreciate you for showcasing their beautiful country!💪🏻🇲🇹
It's so great to see Mark totally gushing about a place. This makes me really really want to visit Malta, especially since the big siege there is one of my favorite stories in history.

As Danes and now both 76, my wife and I have visited Malta 10 times during a few years, for up to 7 weeks. During the Maltese Independence Danish Unions became contacted and started a joint built of a Danish Vacation Center in Mellieha, which has lately been added to with areas on both sides. Today it is a fully Danish owned area with Danish Designed and, Maltese like buildings from chalk stone on a large area (And a private tunnel below the road, to Maltas finest sand beach!), and direct planes every week to Luqa. We have "Danish Calls" in the Loudspeakers, when we leave again. It is free to rent also for other Nationalities, if wanted, but mostly used by the Danes. We of course also have sight seeing during the vacations to major sites on Malta and Gozo. With Maltese based and living, Danish Guides. By that, the still existing Disney-Set for "The Popeye Movie" became designed and built by the Danish Arkitekt and Professor, while also building The Center in Mellieha, and main Actor, Robin Williams lived in Mellieha during the filming. 😀
My earliest memory of travelling to another country is from a family holiday to Malta when I was 3, which proved to be pretty memorable in its own right due to to the fact that our ferry back to the mainland from Gozo on the last day was cancelled, which led to my first (and only) helicopter ride, since that was the only way to get to the airport in time for our flight home.
@@MatthewHeraghty For years, I thought that that was what had happened, but I was talking to my mum about it recently and she told me that the ferry company had actually just pointed us in the direction of the heliport and we'd had to pay for the flight and then claim the money back off our travel insurance later.

I love Malta so much! I went last year and I'm going back later this year and I cannot wait. Regarding the humidity, I didn't think it was all that bad in September. It was quite hot (30 C/90 F) but not so humid. I was quite comfortable in the shade. Now, it could very different in the summer for sure. And winter, apparently, it can feel kind of damp and chilly from the humidity but it never gets bitterly cold. This was a good video for anyone who hasn't been to Malta yet because clearly he is enthusiastic about being there (something I relate to so well).
Thank you, Mark. A helpful video about one of my favourite destinations. Malta has so many layers of history it is worthwhile taking some time to explore the island and discover other areas than the very popular ones. In Valletta we boarded the Hop on Hop off bus and appreciated the opportunity to travel round and hear about the island - if it is still running I would recommend the tour.
No word about the movie locations or Popeye village? I think missed you also the Island Gozo and Camino that are nice to visit by ferry. The bus is a good way to travel and prizes go up a lot in the summer not to forget.

Cool! This video got posted right when my wife and i were at Malta. Another don't from us would be: don't forget your sunscreen! The sun's UV intensity levels can get pretty high and especially when you're white skinned you burn easily. Takes only a little time in the sun to feel the sting already so do yourself that favor of sunscreen protection. We visited Gozo island and i strongly agree to not pass that up. We had a great week on Malta and enjoyed the environment, architecture, food and the people's friendly service. I agree that traffic can be a thing. Not so much the driving on left side part but the rush of it. There will be honking if you slack or seem indecisive. And small motorcycles will just be passing you left and right at any given moment. A thing i felt unsure of though was the level of construction going on. I mean in and of itself it's great. But i feel like they are going for luxurious boulevard style in some places that (in my humble opinion) could potentially diminish the cultural and historical identity of those parts of Malta. Nice spots already had those typical loud music tourist stands and restaurants with loud happy hours. I know it sounds like i'm turning into a grumpy old guy lol. I just hope they are not going to turn it into a second Ibiza. Because i think Malta has more to offer than that culturally.
There are still large parts of Malta that are peaceful and calm, but you have to take the time to go there. St. Julian's and Sliema are full of nice places to go but there is no way I would want to live there. But if you do, you can take a 15 min drive and feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. (I am aware that not everyone's interpretation of "the middle of nowhere" is the same. 😅)

Good timing as I am looking to go soon. What strikes me is high the prices are for Southern Europe. Is it that expensive because they speak English / were colonized by the Britts? I call it English speaking taxes, i.e. the reason why Belize and Jamaica are more expensive than surrounding countries.
Don't forget that Malta is a small island with a population of over half a million. As such it faces a big overpopulation problem. So, if you're visiting be repspectful and don't litter.

So they speak Maltese or English? is it like Eire where they speak Gallic as a second language? I love your videos as I'm to old to travel and it makes me feel like I'm traveling.😂 I should have waited until the end of the video.
It's very easy to be an English speaker in Malta. Everyone speaks English (unless they're older - in that case they might not speak it so well) and speaks it better than a lot of native English speakers do.
It's not 3rd world at all. The public transportation just isn't all that reliable because there's so much traffic. That doesn't make a country 3rd world. They have all the typical "comforts" of any European country, except for great public transportation (it's still better than public transportation in most US cities).
Omg in the first 24sec of your video you showed my belated grandparents street. Thanks really surprised. That's gzira opposite the gzira health centre. I now been living in UK since 2012. My grand ma passed away 8th Sept😢 2022 at 4am
Malta is overcrowded, the roads are a nightmare and outside of Valletta & Mdina its by and largely an ugly mess. Gozo is much nicer, but sadly is slowly going the way of Malta because the government does nothing to control the destruction of the islands by the seemingly untouchable property developers and Gozo is next. So sad but the islands are being destroyed by greed and corruption.
Factoid: you may notice a cross in the top left of Maltese national flag, which represents the George cross that was awarded to the tiny island nation by Britain for the courage of its people in resisting the massive barrage of the Nazis. Ps good job Wolter, all bases covered.
What's with all the negativity - all the recent "DON'T" videos? You should stick with more positivity like your earlier videos. Even in this video, you talk about so much fun stuff to do, but I wonder how many people are turned off by the "don't do this" attitude. Nice video BTW with LOTS of things TO DO when traveling to Malta.
Kinnie is awful, one bottle is enough for 10. Maltese sausage is awesome. Try the pastry called a Wudy, frankfurter with cheese inside in their delicious pastry. Also deep fried ice cream is easy to find.
malta is a real mix. sliema is crazy crowded. no fun, pretty fast. but the water everywhere is nice enough. food is meh. people in sliema are formal and distant. i think valetta gives the same vibe. gozo is pretty cool. quiet and serene. but, malta is a weird place. a lot of crains everywhere = a lot of selling out, a lot of corruption, and way way too many construction sites and noise. nothing to see here, in a sense. just too darn densely packed in most of "tourist" malta. they don't have kids much in malta, which is weird. very catholic, but no kids? weird world.

It's very easy to be an English speaker in Malta. Everyone speaks English (unless they're older - in that case they might not speak it so well) and speaks it better than a lot of native English speakers do.
The ‘Dont’ is don’t go there after May and don’t rely on the public transport. Weather is great, sea is beautiful but boy it’s a bit third world 😬
It's not 3rd world at all. The public transportation just isn't all that reliable because there's so much traffic. That doesn't make a country 3rd world. They have all the typical "comforts" of any European country, except for great public transportation (it's still better than public transportation in most US cities).
Why they hate tree's?
You don't mention the wonderful coastal walks and stunning scenery. You can get away from it all and not see another soul for miles
Did you go to the Popeye Village?
The Maltese Bippy.
Kinnie is awful, one bottle is enough for 10. Maltese sausage is awesome. Try the pastry called a Wudy, frankfurter with cheese inside in their delicious pastry. Also deep fried ice cream is easy to find.
I was told they drive on the right… 😮
I think that horse at around 2:00 was lame please choose carriage rides carefully xx
Those wrascaly wrabbits yummy 😂. I already have my water shoes
malta is a real mix. sliema is crazy crowded. no fun, pretty fast. but the water everywhere is nice enough. food is meh. people in sliema are formal and distant. i think valetta gives the same vibe. gozo is pretty cool. quiet and serene. but, malta is a weird place. a lot of crains everywhere = a lot of selling out, a lot of corruption, and way way too many construction sites and noise. nothing to see here, in a sense. just too darn densely packed in most of "tourist" malta. they don't have kids much in malta, which is weird. very catholic, but no kids? weird world.
