I Walked +20,000 Steps A Day & This Is What Happened!

  • After breaking a couple of ribs 8 weeks ago, my activity level suddenly dropped. I wasn’t really been able to do anything while they healed, but I still kept busy...
As a result, I managed to put on a few pounds during this 8 week period. But now that my ribs have healed, I have been motivated get myself back in shape, and I am turning towards what I know worked in the past.
Walking is my favorite way to get in shape, just making the effort to take some extra steps, you can make such a huge difference in the long run. So I slapped my FitBit on to keep track of my steps and made it a goal to try and get at least 20,000 steps everyday to help jump start me into getting back into shape.
In addition to the 20,000 steps a day, I worked to keep my caloric intake to around 2000 calories a day so I could create a caloric deficit that would allow me to start burning up fat.
Here were my result for the week:
Day 1 - I managed to get 22,776 steps and my body burnt 3744 calories for the day
    Day 2 - I got 20783 steps and burnt 3634 calories
Day 3 - was a huge day for me. I managed to get in 35,328 steps and burnt 4634 calories
    Day 4 - 20,377 steps and 3552 calories burnt
    Day 5 - 25,159 steps and 3921 calories burnt
    Day 6 - 25,377 and 3941 calories burnt
Day 7 -21,974 steps and 3766 calories burnt
For the week I got 171,774 steps totaling slightly over 80 miles and burnt a total of 27,192 calories while only taking in around 14,000 calories. This allowed me to create a calorie deficit of 13192 calories for the week.
So my starting weight at 205 pounds, my body fat percentage was at 20.3 and my water weight was at 59.7
After 7 days of walking over 20,000 steps per day, with the average step count coming out to almost 25 thousand a day.
I was able to drop down to 197.8 pounds. It’s actually even a little better than the numbers show because I currently am retaining 1.2% more water at this lower weight than I was at my higher weight.
My body fat percentage dropped by 1.5%. That’s over 3 pounds or 1.4 kilograms of pure fat. My Muscle Mass also went up from 38.8% to 40.1 %
I am always amazed how something so simple as walking, which we do everyday anyways, is so effective. By being mindful to do it a little more, you can make some big differences in the long run!

I wonder how he knows he lost “pure fat”. I recently got a body composition scale and while I have lost 9 pounds, 2 of that was muscle, and I am making a point to get adequate protein, collagen, and creatine. I am lifting heavy-ish weights as well as walking with a weighted vest. Disheartening. I’m an older woman and I can’t afford to lose muscle.

    • @kevincampos766

@@mellocello187 He might be right or he might be wrong. Dont get absorbed in all these little details. The only accurate way to see your body fat is a dexa scan. Just look in the mirror and try to be objective and as long as you are hitting your protein goals, you are set!! Just trust the process.

Well, not quite. If you don't mind your caloric intake, your appetite will likely go up, which will result in overeating, and you can't outrun a bad diet. Additionally, vast distances should be spread in 25-35 minute session, to avoid cortisol buildup, which is related to fat gain, particularly in the lower abdomen and in and around your face. Hair loss too. And no, it doesn't matter how good your dietary choices are, your body will make an effort to store fat around that area, likely to prevent organ damage due to high levels of stress (kidneys, thyroid gland, brain (?)). It makes a huge difference over a period of months. Otherwise, I completely agree with your point, for I've been walking 20k+ steps daily for the past 2 years. Without skipping a day. It brings a huge carryover to all of your lifts in the gym, keeps stress levels low (assuming you're not doing a 15km walks in one session), keeps the body fat low, improves your cardiovascular health... And the list goes on. I managed to lose around 70kg of fat just by walking and intermittent fasting, without damaging my joints or any other body part. Same can't be said for running. Walking > running.

was difficult to achieve at first, as Software Developer I'm quite sedentary and was only doing ~2500 by default. but I begun to do all my ways (groceries, dentist, haircut, gym etc.) walkin - no car, no bicycle and (especially hard) no motorcycle.

if you lower cortisol with walking for the next days, you burn body fat.
if you increase cortisol with running, you will burn calories.
this is the most important difference.
if you only burn body fat, you don't get hungry.

Not average day to day regular walking because I don’t think the average normal person does that amount in steps in an hour with regular activities. I’m very active at my job and even at home and I don’t do that amount of steps in an hour unless you work at job that requires you to be on your feet moving non stop like maybe pushing carts outside a store, and even then that’s a lot of steps

50,000 steps takes way too long..About 7 hrs and 30 mins to complete if you walk at an average pace. If you’re a fast walker, it takes about 6 hours and 40 minutes.
So anywhere between 6 hr 40 mins and 7 hr 30 mins to complete 50,000 steps depending on how fast you walk.
Very unrealistic for the majority of people to achieve.

Yeah it doesn't make sense. At normal weight I burn about 800 calories per 20K steps, and surely he is not that obese to burn much more than that. My guess was that his daily expenditure (calories you burn just by existing) were added on top of that, but even then his daily calories would be around 3000 - way too high.

    • @otrebligoh
      @otrebligoh 4 роки тому +1

That's the total of calories he's burning in a day, some walking or running apps by default show the total amount of calories burned in a day. Considering your weight and height a person would burn around 1600 to 2000 calories a day with regular everyday activities. So if you add your 1000 calories burned by walking plus your probably 1900 calories you'll get those numbers too

instead of lowering cortisol, the cortisol will go up. that switches off fat burning. you will burn more calories but far less body fat. it will make you hungry a.f. and if you ignore the hunger and don't eat good animal protein, then you will end up damaging your metabolism which is not easy to fix.
