- You guys wanted it, so I made a review on it! Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue really took me by surprise; I knew it had to be somewhat decent given how many of you not only mentioned it but also voted for it in my latest poll, but I was not prepared for just how good this game was! I wish I'd had the chance to play it as a kid but I suppose any time is better than not at all.

ABOUT THE GAME
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! is a platform game based on Pixar's 1999 computer animated film Toy Story 2. It is the sequel to the first Toy Story video game. It was released for the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh in 1999, while a Dreamcast version followed in 2000. The computer versions were released under the title Disney/Pixar's Action Game, Toy Story 2. A different version, a side-scrolling platform game titled Toy Story 2, was also released for the Game Boy Color in 1999.
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! was re-released as a downloadable game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable in 2011, followed by a downloadable PlayStation Vita re-release in 2012. A sequel to the game was released 11 years later, based on Toy Story 3.
The game's plot is relative to the Toy Story 2 film, and begins at Andy's house as Al McWhiggin steals Woody from the family's yard sale. Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Rex, Slinky and Mr. Potato Head venture out to find and rescue Woody. After leaving Andy's house, the toys enter the neighborhood in which Andy lives, then proceed to Al's Toy Barn, the penthouse where Al lives and finally the airport terminal and tarmac where the movie ends. At the end of the game, Buzz has a final battle with Stinky Pete (a.k.a. the Prospector) and two of his in-game henchmen. Contrary to the movie, defeating Stinky Pete is the end of the game.

This game was amazing. 100 percented it recently and it still holds up.
Imagine my excitement when I found out that Traveler's Tales also made a *Buzz Lightyear of Star Command game!*
And then I played it. You might want to take a look at that...
Also, if you're playing an emulation, the Mexican Banditos were in the NTSC version and changed to just bad cowboys in the PAL version.
Ohh yah I got shown a pic of the blonde evil cowboys! I can see why it was changed though. 😂
God this game was easily in my top 5 as a kid... behind Spyros 1,2 and 3 😂
My copy died a while back though 😭 gotta grab a new one after seeing this and have another nostalgia trip! I loved “A Bugs Life” and “Tarzan” too... would love to see you do something on them!

fun fact: the Mexican bandito enemies were found offensive so in later versions they were changed to blond haired cowboys

Hay Tori, love the video. Love this game as well. But I never could complete this game even though I could get to the final level. My favorite level of the hole game is.., Al's Apartment. The level and music was just so good.

The soundtrack alone tells something deep inside me that there is so much to look forward to and enjoy. And not just the game, but life in general.

So glad you reviewed this game! I voted for it because I did play it as a kid and remember loving it, and thought you'd like it too and it'd be a good game to review and play. My brother still owns this game on PS1 (He still has his PS1 and a ton of games) but he won't let me play it, so it was fun to see it again. It was a favourite game of mine on the PS1, but my top favourites were Spryo: Year of the Dragon, Croc 1 & 2 and Themepark world, though I loved so many and played so many (Like Speed freaks, though I always lost on that game). Love seeing the PS1 games again as they bring back so many happy memories.

@@ToridoriGaming I kinda get why he doesn't want me to play certain ones having grown up with him, but I know he'll let me play some eventually if I ask nicely (he let me play the original spyro games, though I didn't play the first one since the camera sucked so bad), though that would require him to leave his room and get of his computer long enough for me to lol. I could easily go and sneak and play them if I really wanted to since I know where they are ;-)

Theme Park World is that one game I remember playing the most of as a kid and is the one game I'd love to play again it was so much fun. Well, that and the Croc games. Speed Freaks would be fun to play again, just to see if I could come anything but last as I sucked at it as a kid.

Nowadays, whenever I hear "Traveller's Tales" my mind jumps to three things: Crash Bandicoot, Sonic R and the endless line of LEGO tie-ins. I never had Toy Story 2: BLTTR when I was younger so I should get it sometime if I can find a good price. I did manage to get Toy Story 3 on Wii which is still a really good game, too.
The only thing I remember having TT attached to it was Wrath of Cortex, because of Clancy Brown's booming voice stating, "Developed by Traveller's Tales." I could be remembering wrong of course. 😂
I know I'm late here, but on the box for the PC version, it states how the robot toys are apparently part of Zurg's army. I guess that's how the developers explain all the enemies in the first 2/3 of the game. As for Al's toys, I don't know, maybe Stinky Pete sent them all out? Oh gaming logic...Great review by the way! This is a childhood classic for me.
What a nice review of probably the best Disney Interactive title. I recall i never got into the Zurg boss fight because acquiring tokens got just more and more harder. And it took me forever to find out how to deal damage to that giant slime monster. I like it when people talk about games they enjoyed more than talking about bad games usually so yeah, i liked this.
The Slime Monster was probably the hardest for me, though I didn't want to mention it because I thought I was just bad. I got pretty tired of Buzz announcing, "You are a sad strange little man." everytime I took damage from it. 😂
Those mice on the elevator level can f*ck right off with their miniscule hitboxes. Grew up with this game, I play through it pretty much every year, already did it in 2024. Massive Multiplayer Online open world games cannot match the sense of scale of playing through Andy's house as a kid.
I remember this from childhood. I played it on the PC back in the day (we had no consoles until I was 11 or 12). So awesome, and seeing it again gave me a massive nostalgia boost. Knowing it was actually good made me feel AMAZING that it's not just faulty memory!!
I hated those spinning poles. But I figured out that if you aim for the part where the pole connects to the wall, it worked well. Same for the ziplines. I always jumped towards the wall rather than the pole.

Sadly when i was a child, i never had games like crash bandicoot or morrowind however i did have this game and this game was 70% of my childhood games
i thought that noise the t rex makes was a goose lol until now .

Me and my brother played this game when we were kids, we never got passed the second or third level for some reason.
Time to get back into it? :D
On a real PS1, I use Active Camera mode through a whole playthrough. But I haven't done that in over a decade. On a PS1 emulator or the PC version, I use Passive Camera mode and map the camera controls to the right stick. The rotation is still a constant (rather slow) speed, and there's also still no pitch control, but it is a bit more natural to play this way.

I do feel like Toy Story 2 could benefit from an N Sane, Reignited, Nitro Fueled remaster but unfortunately as you mentioned the game is pretty dated to the point where I doubt Disney and Traveller’s Tales care enough to remake it which is a shame
Well Hit and Run is apparently in talks to have a remaster, and MediEvil is coming out in a few weeks! Don't see why this couldn't get one. I was surprised it didn't after release of Toy Story 2!

Hey Car29, please don't feel bad! I started this review before my mum-in-law went downhill, and nobody knew just how ill she was until it was too late to do anything about it. I do miss her but I'm feeling much better than I was two weeks ago, and I'm sure she'd rather I carried on doing the things I loved than sat around being miserable.

This game was my childhood! I had the PC version which is identical to the PlayStation version. I recently patched it to work on a more modern OS in a higher resolution; incidentally, running the game in a higher resolution like 1080p or 4K messes up the hit boxes making it even worse! I know this cause I’ve experienced it! It’s worst when using the spin which either won’t hit enemies, or it will and you’ll get hit too, making the later bosses an annoying pain! Especially the Zurg boss, GOOD GOD IT WAS A NIGHTMARE!!!
UPDATE, Turns out the hit boxes on PC aren’t affected by patching it with widescreen support, they just suck in general. And the reason Zurg was so fucking hard to beat is because he moves WAY too fast when playing on a computer with a CPU faster than 1.0 GHz .
That's so strange, I've never heard of higher resolutions messing up hit boxes but now I'm intrigued. 🤔
Guess I'm gonna have to rewatch Toy Story 2 at some point and try out the game. I've always heard great things about it, more reason for me to play it!

WOW, another DEEP memory. We had this game when I was really little, so little that I never got past the alleyway level because of my poor coordination and dumb child brain. I wasn't even sure this game was real until you flashed up the footage of that alleyway. I remember liking this game enough that I kept trying, but at some point we lost the disk.
Discs always seem to go missing, I'm starting to wonder if there's a disc fairy as well as a sock fairy!
I used to play this for hours, trying to get to the final boss and finish the game, but without a memory card it was near impossible and hard. I never end up finishing it, but it was fun and challenging game to spend my saturdays on along with other games to swap to when I got bored and tired of it.
Ahh the good ol' days of mem cards... remember getting a new game and having to sacrifice a save file to make room for it? 😂

I absolutely loved this game as a kid!
Played and completed it in full multiple times.
Heck I remember even liking it so much that I tried to do a really ghetto review of it where I would literally just record the screen with my mother's camcorder and talk while playing, then stop and record another bit in chronological order. Never did anything with it but hey xD
And after that, I would bring out my Action Replay device to have myself some fun with stuff like Moon Jump codes so I could go explore all the outta bounds stuff. I remember even stumbling upon parallel worlds
I played it on the N64 so sadly I didn't get to enjoy those short video clips from the movie, something I really loved doing in A Bug's Life on the PS1.
I'm actually impressed at how good the PS1 version looks and if it wasn't for the warping and wobbling textures that can't seem to make up their mind, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference
I also just love the premise and idea of being this little toy in all of these macro sized worlds where common stuff suddenly become these giant obstacles.
It just makes you want to go and explore every little nook and cranny of the environments to see what you might stumbled upon.
If you like that too, then I would absolutely recommend you give the game "Toy Commander" on the Dreamcast a look. Not a platformer but you get to explore this enormous house and do all kinds of missions while interacting with stuff. It's great but nobody seems to ever talk about it these days...
I will say, in Toy Story 2, the scale of some of the stuff isn't quite right. Like just how enormous Buzz is when you actually compare him to the plane in the airport xD
It's hard for me to say whenever Toy Story 1 or 2 is the better game but 2 is definitely a hell of a lot easier and more fair, so I think that one might be my favorite, even though both games are quite nostalgic for me
ONE thing I was always a tad disappointed with as a kid was that the really cool opening sequence from the movie where Buzz is gets to fly around shoot at stuff wasn't in the game... I wanna play that!
Despite how often we always bitch about movie tie in games, I do kinda miss the old Disney ones of the 90's. They were usually pretty solid experiences that would have been great even without the licenses.

Being tiny in a normal sized world is one of my favourite genres of games, if you want to call it a genre. But I will definitely agree the scaling seems to be all over the place... maybe the plane is supposed to be one of those 8 seater propeller driven planes? 😂
I think I remember the first game, I believe my brother owned it. But I can only recall small bits of it and I recall the game being a bit tough.
@@ToridoriGaming Could never get past the claw machine boss in the first Toy Story game. The game is overall really damn punishing and unforgiving but the claw machine is where the difficulty really starts to rise.
Never been able to complete the game without cheats.
Same thing with Aladdin.. The Genesis version at least.
I should really check out the 3rd Toy Story game sometime as well. I heard that one was also decent.
As for those macro world games, surprisingly few comes to mind actually.
Chibi Robo would be one as well Mr Mosquito and the aforementioned Toy Commander
I suppose Army Men would also count but I'm not too familiar with that one

Toy Story 2 along with A Bugs Life which were both obviously made with the same game engine, are among my most favourite PS1 games even to this day. Please could you also do a video review of the latter as well please Tori ? I’m surprised you haven’t already and I would really like to see it 😊

The GameBoy Color game, "Toy Story 2" is unrelated to "Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue". It's a wholly different game by a different developer.
I'm currently playing this game on the PS5 atm. I forgot about those mouses back when i played it on the PS1. I guess i can thank whoever came up with the ingame save on the current gen console. If i miss the mouse on the wall, i just quick load and i'm back ready to jump a second later. Unlike the PS1, you'd have to spend 5 minutes going all the way back up again only to miss over and over again 😒

I would be intrigued to hear your thoughts on Wrath of Cortex. It's not bad on its own, but it falls short when compared to the original games especially Warped.
I actually played Wrath of Cortex a lot when I was younger, I liked it! 😊
IIRC, the only level I couldn't 100% was the tarmac. The race on that one was impossible for me.

Hey Tronnus! I can try, but it's a bit difficult to balance background music. What sounds really loud and overpowering to someone wearing headphones is very quiet and barely noticeable to someone playing the video through a tv. :/
Had this for PC when I was a kid! It was frustrating to figure out, but it was so good, and I did beat it. Bosses were actually pretty challenging for a 3D platformer!

Loved, loved, LOVED this game - haven't played it since the early 00's, but often re-listen to the brilliant soundtrack for nostalgia. I honestly can't choose a definitive favourite level or music track from the game - they all have their own merits! :) I remember running into a nasty bug on Level 12 which made it impossible to beat as Zurg would be unreachable, therefore not allowing Buzz to hit him, but aside from that I could never fault the game.

Toy Story 2 is my all-time favorit on PS1! Soundtrack, Level- and Enemy-Design, Gameplay ... everything on top-notch!!! And on top of that a TOY STORY-game!!! For a kid like me, that was extremly influenced by the movies, this was the shit! I also played Toy Story Racer, Toy Story 3 on PS3 (always chose PS3 over PC in compare the character-animation in PC is just horrific) and the games for GameBoy.
But oh, I wish, they did the whole series like Buzz Lightyear to the resque!!!

Its deffo one of my fav ps1 games besides Crash and Spyro. I did not know you can cheese that Train challenge XD that was always my least fav puzzle aside from the one in Tarmac Trouble!! (After 20 years...I never found a quicker solution until now)
The Mexicans that you shoot in the airport level and Al's penthouse?....yeah that does not exist in the PAL version. In the PAL version...they are more like Cowboys...I think they changed it for Europeans because...well, shooting Mexicans?? (Sings) *1990's Casual Racism*
I'm surprised you eased through the mini bosses. The Jackhammer and the Blacksmith were always the two I had most difficulty with. And the final boss being the last three mini bosses is kinda lazy. But overall I do enjoy the game.
Now review Bugs Bunny Lost in Time...and while you're at it, the sequel!! Bugs Bunny and Taz: Time Busters!! Those two are also favs of mine!!

I have to be honest I... didn't find the Jackhammer or Blacksmith. I fell off the construction yard twice and gave up until a later date (which never came because I gave up 100%ing) and I have no idea where the Blacksmith is. 😂
And Bugs Bunny is on the list because it's a childhood favourite of mine!
@@ToridoriGaming if you do decide to go back at look for the blacksmith...hes on top of the roof in zone 7.
This is why talking to rex sometimes helps. You can find him in the luggage carrier in zone 2

When I was a kid, I could only get up to the Alleys and Gullies level, and then I somehow got a cheat CD, and the moon jump cheat was a god send lol

@@ToridoriGaming It's funny, because Buzz's wings go like crazy, and then the game tries to stop you, so you sort of float in one place for a bit, and then you go up.
You need to review Ice Age 2 and Ice Age 3, those are actually fun games

Ahh a bugs life, a classic. Had in on PC, but the buttons placements was a pain sometimes.
My dad used to rent it for me from Blockbuster, I could never do the chase level with Hopper. 😂

I like crash bandicoot wrath of cortex I played it when I was a teenager
Also I pretty much beat RC in the exact same way till I eventually unlocked the rocket shoes
I played a demo for this on my Ps1 Demo disc from fall of 1999. This game is far better than Toy Story 2 on the GBC and the original Toy Story on the SNES and Genesis or Megadrive as what you would call it. I would love to see you play Star Wars Episode I Jedi Power Battles on the Ps1. Some say it is awesome and others say it sucks. The controls make me want to rip my hair out in many places but it has its fun moments. I'm bald now because of that game.

Glad you got around to and mostly enjoyed this one! Personally love this game. It's not God tier or anything but with the standards of licensed games, it's bloody great. Traveller's Tales were ahead of their time before they got forced to make Lego games all their lives.
I think the el bandito dude actually got changed to a less racist model but I'm not too sure on that?

It's a very very abysmal game. I can't go five minutes without raging in this game on how hard and difficult everything is. The controls on some levels are so muddy that you can't even control your character. I played this when I was younger and I'm still finding things out about this game that I did not know what even was in this game. This game has so much in it that an average player would not know that it was in it because of how terrible and awful this game is. I can continue on telling you how terrible this game is, but I don't want to make an essay on how terrible this game is in the comment section of your video. So if you want to know how terrible and bad this game is, then just played yourself. I wouldn't even make my worst enemy play this game.
I am a video game collector, I own this game, and I will never get a game more fucking horrible than this game is.

Perhaps if I said Tomb Raider 1 (a game I really like) then Blasphemy sounds like a good word. Fortunately, I said one of the sequels because I can't stand repetitive and outdated combat, and artificial enemy placement.
