I'm so glad that they picked Bathory as number one. Bathory created two genres, Black Metal and Viking (folk) metal. Thomas was a genious but sadly he never got to live long enough to see how legenday Bathory would become.

BATHORY - athory was a black metal band/musical project formed in 1983 in the city of Stockholm, capital of Sweden, by multi-instrumentalist Thomas Börje Forsberg, better known by the name Quorthon. The band is considered one of the creators of both black metal and Viking metal. Bathory closed its activities definitively in 2004, when Quorthon passed away. The band's name is a tribute to the Hungarian Countess Erzsébet Báthory, considered Hungary's most famous serial killer. In the 1984 album if Morbid Tales where we heard in the songs Return to the Eve a woman in narration and Danse Macabre, this looks like a movie score with violin and something atmospheric (can be confused with gothic). Most people mention the 1985 album To Mega Therion, because there is opera and orchestra here. From To Mega Therio album from Celtic Frost, Christopher got the name for his band, THERION, is considered the father of symphonic metal, but it is very different from Nightwish. They mix the 70's prog and classic composer Richard Wagner. I believe that this band is in fact symphonic for the great choirs and great orchestras, using many opera singers. The DNA would therefore be Uriah Heep, Celtic Frost and Therion. The band started in 1987 and released 17 albuns. It started like death metal and has always used themes geared towards paganism. Most of its lyrics are written by Thomas Karlsson, head and founder of the magical order of Dragon Rouge, which Johnsson is a member. Therion (Christopher) is the father of symphonic metal and the starting point is the song Symphony of the Dead (features more atmospheric keyboard sounds as well as soprano vocals and classically styled clean male vocals by two guest musicians.) from album Beyond Sanctorum (1992 ) and the song Paths. Finally, and very importantly, Christofer invented symphonic metal as opera. the Symphonic Term was not created by him. In fact, Christofer recognizes that Nightwish made the genre popular, but criticizes those bands that came later, because the idea is to compose operas and not just orchestrations.
*My favourite METAL bands from Sweden are : AMARANTHE, ARCH ENEMY, SABATON, EVERGREY, HAMMERFALL, EUROPE, METALITE, AMON AMARTH, THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA, MAJESTICA,...* 🎵🎸🎭🎹🎵💿🎵🔥😈🔥
I like In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, Katatonia, The Haunted, Sonic Syndicate, At the gates, Dead By April and many more. It is amazing how good metal bands comes from Sweden. Just like from Finland.
Somehow Sweden’s greatest metal band, the doom pioneers Candlemass, didn’t make the list. Instead the focus was solely on technical metal bands (well maybe not Bathory…)
While not active anymore, back in the 90's Edge of Sanity was very influential in the metal scene. Same goes for Tiamat. And the list was great, but it boggles my mind that At The Gates wasn't mentioned, nor Candlemass and Katatonia, Dark Funeral, Watain, Soilwork and well I don't personally like Sabaton but you cannot deny their popularity. Also, Europe might be too soft for todays audiences and rather classified as hard rock, but they have their roots in metal as well, as doheavilly disputed but quite popular Ghost.
I personally really like all of these bands, i found it wierd Sabaton was not on there though. The Swedish metal band iv'e been listening to the most in recent time is Raubtier. Mostly because of how much i like Per Hulkoff's songwriting and how good they are live.
My favorite music genre is Heavy Metal and Power Metal!🤘🤘 My favorite band is Sabaton 😎🤘🤘😎 Sabaton will always be my favorite band! Best band in the whole world if you ask me! 😎😉 Warm And Kind regards from a big Sabaton fan in Northern Sweden🤘 ❤️🇸🇪🇸🇪❤️🤘
Meshuggah should be number 1 simply because of their influence. Metal in general they should be put high in. Wether you like them or not, you can’t deny they are one of the most influential metal bands of the last 2 or 3 decades.
@@danieljansson2310 No, Meshuggah is still more influential, they created djent, majority of today’s metal is djent or djent adjacent. Tomas’ style of drumming is also quite influential, although he wasn’t first with it, he did it very well, if not the best.
Bathory are my number 1 favourite band. Sadly the guy from the band died in around 2004. He was a pioneer and invented both black metal and viking metal.
As a sucker for Metalcore and melodic. here's a list of a few i like (not in specific order) 1. Imminence 2. Dead By April 3. Orbit Culture 4. dEMOTIONAL 5. Smash Into Pieces 6. Self Deception 7. Follow The Cipher 8. Escape The Day 9. Rave The Reqviem 10. Amaranthe 11. Scar Symmetry 12. In Flames 13. Sonic Syndicate 14. Eyes Wide Open 15. Evergrey 16. THE DAY WE LEFT EARTH
Pretty much every band on that list have in some form pioneered some sub genre of metal music and every single one in those band are excellent musicians. In my view, the one band notably missing from the list is Sabaton. While I'm not listening to them myself they are the only (Swedish) band today that are anywhere close to filling arenas by themselves. From a personal point, Orbit Culture is one of my most listened to bands (and they just released a new single).
Sweden is one of the most influential countries when it comes to Metal as well. Especially when it comes to Death Metal. Early Swedish Death Metal was originally inspired more by Hardcor Punk than Metal. But very quickly there were two kinds of Death Metal forming in Sweden. Stockholm Death Metal, and Gothenburg Death Metal. Stockholm Death Metal was raw, fierce and extreme, almost resembling Thrash Metal, while Gothenburg Death Metal was more melodic and fast paced, sometimes resembling Black Metal. The first Stockholm bands were Morbin and Nihilist that formed in 1986 and 1987 respectively. Nihilist was the pioneers of the "Buzzsaw" guitar tone, which would become one of the trademarks of the entire Stockholm Death scene. The most prominent bands in the Stockholm scene were Entombed, Grave, Dismember and Unleashed. The first death metal band to form in Gothenburg was Grotesque, who formed in 1988 and were influenced by both early death metal and black metal. After the 1990 disbandment of Grotesque, the band's vocalist Tomas Lindberg and guitarist Alf Svensson formed At the Gates alongside brothers Jonas and Anders Björler. At the Gates' melancholic and melodic take on death metal proved immediately influential upon fellow Gothenburg bands, with Eucharist and Ceremonial Oath quickly adopting a similar style. Dissection and In Flames were also an early purveyors of this sound, additionally incorporating elements of black metal and folk music respectively. By 1993, Dark Tranquillity too began to incorporate more melodic elements influenced by At the Gates. Following the 1996 disbandment of At the Gates, critics dubbed this style the "Gothenburg sound", and At the Gates, Dark Tranquility and In Flames as the "Gothenburg big three", credited as pioneers of melodic death metal. Bands outside of Sweden inspired by the Gothenburg scene are usually called Swedecore-bands.
Melodic Death Metal music is one of Sweden's biggest music exports, and as such it's sometimes also referred to as Swedish Death Metal. We have Soilwork, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Scar Symmetry, The Haunted... The list goes on.
freakin vibed with that a super lot. top musical content. super glad I came across your channel! 😵A suggestion as well! October Ends' new song is on a whole other level. You should react to their new song! 🔥
I practically agree with the list. I'm familiar with all of the bands. I guess because I'm a gen X metal head living close to Sweden. I discovered Opeth in 1998 and they blew me away instantly. Also love their new prog rock style
There are hundred of Swedish metal bands that made it big internationally and hundreds more that are really good..... same as all nordic countries to be honest and yes I think (have not fact checked this, just heard it a bunch of times) that Sweden has the most metalheads per capita in the world.
all of them you saw is very popular in Sweden and in some big part of the world, but we have alot of more popular Metalbands that are famous all over the world.
Been a swedish hardrocker since the 70s. Kind of lost interest in the 90s, but Sabaton woke me up again, so for me they are easily the No. 1. Other cool "newer" swedish bands: Brothers of metal, Follow the Cipher, Nestor, Amaranthe, Majestica,
My favourite metal bands from Sweden are Sabaton, Amon Amarth, Sonic Syndicate (back when they were a melodeath band, they're metalcore now) and Soilwork. And I highly, *highly* recommend watching the live version of Sabatons En Livstid I Krig. Funny part about that song is that depending on language (It's sung in English and Swedish) you get 2 different povs. The english is an overall description of the Thirty Years War whilst the Swedish depicts the views of a common soldier.
Not to mention the Killing Ground song, Ett slag färgat rött in Swedish. The English version is a bit more laid back or how you should call it. It doesn't take up the fact that the Caroleans slaughtered their russian prisoners. There were no heroism there. The Caroleans took their revenge on the Russians.
Amon Amarth is probably the best viking metal band there is. and At the gats is an honorable mention, their album "Slaughter of the soul" might be the most influential metal album of all time.
Band, I don't know. But there is an album from 2003 called The Great Fall that trumps everything else I've ever heard in metal. First of all, it's a compositional masterpiece, second, it has a completely unique sound. It's a dark and mysterious concept album revolving around the end times and the fall of humanity - a dark journey to the end of the world. It's melodic, neo-classical and slightly symphonic. Unlike everything else - it sounds like nothing else. A real gem, completely hidden in obscurity. The band is called Narnia.
For me - despite note being a metal-head - my favorite swedish bands would probably be Dark Tranquility (in the list) (melodic death), and Candlemass (not in the list) (epic doom).
As a swede and a massive metal head I can definatly say that there are a lot of great bands from Sweden. Some of my favourites Swedish bands are In Flames, Soilwork, At the Gates, Grayscale Season, Meshugga (sometimes). Death metal is the biggest one in Sweden I think (or maybe power metal, idk), but there are so many genres that there is something for everyone. But outside of In Flames (wich I adore) I mostly listen to Japanese or American metal bands, because there are more in the genres I like. I really like melodic death metal (In Flames), ´´metalcore´´(Architects, A7X, BFMV, SiM, Lamb of God, Spiritbox, Children of Bodom), and many many more (Gojira, 5FDP, Metallica, Slipknot, Megadeath). I especially like alternative bands that are complex: Sokoninaru, Polyphia, Ichika Nito. But the bands I like most are the japanese ones like: SiM, Sokoninaru, Maximum The Hormone, The Gazette, Wagamama Rakia, Telecide, Pascode, Ladybaby, Babymetal. And outside of metal I´d say Nirvana, The Oral Ciggarettes, natori, eve, TK, radiohead, Yoasobi. Did not mean to write this much hahahha, I guess I just really love metal.
Meshuggah, Amon Amarth, In Flames Dark Tranquility and Arch Enemy are my favorite bands. Amon Amarth's songs are about Viking mythology and history, and so they have sometimes been labeled "Viking metal" although the band insists they play melodic death metal.
I'm just going to point out one thing, since this was about Swedish music; - Sweden has *a lot* of great punk and prog music! Especially the latter is almost unique to Sweden. It's not that hard to understand that there's much metal in Sweden, considering that the Black Metal scene started in Norway and Sweden, though. -:)
These bands are certainly good, but there are so many great bands in Sweden that it's hard to say which ones are the best.Anyway thanks to Sweden for the good music and keep it up.
From the list I like Arch Enemy, Hammerfall, Amon Amarth but there are missing atleast two definitely worth of mention like Amaranthe and especially Sabaton that is very close being the biggest metal band in the Sweden at the moment. Then I shall add very energetic Dynazty and Brothers of Metal that is nice etheric viking mythology style band.
Quorthon aka bathory is a L E G E N D!!!!!!! Influenced many genres of metal top albums first wave of black metal viking metal top albums and a true pioneer.Sadly he left us early.. respect r.i.p. in VALHALA!!!
Yeah I would say that’s an alright list. Some of my favorites are: Bathory, Marduk, Sarcator, Eternal Evil, Gehennah, Watain, Dismember, Nifelheim, Bastard Priest etc.
I think this list is a few years old, still good but a bit outdated. For now I would say that for instance Orbite Culture, The Halo effect, Sabaton and a few others would make the list
I love many metal bands. But I do not have a specific genre I like more, it all depends on what I feel like listening to at the moment. I listen to all kinds of music. :)
Some of my favorites that are not included on this list are Sabaton, Hellacopters, Imperial state electric and Mustasch there are also Ghost and lots of other bands I think you will enjoy listening to them.
There are so many good metal bands from all genres in Sweden and it would take me forever to write them all down. So, i will instead give a shoutout to some bands for either being childhood friends or who i got to know while we played on tours/festivals together: Avatar Månegarm Fejd Amon Amarth Warheim Istapp Thyrfing The Last Band They all deserve their praise. I of course did the Swedish thing here and never mentioned my own band 😂
In flames is hands down my favourite. But amon amarth and arch enemy is really good live. Wicked energy and crowd going nuts. Also love Sabaton as many said in the comments. Worth mentioning is the halo effect, imminence and soilwork. Bit smaller bands but I really enjoy their music. Cant believe someone created a list of swedish metal bands without Sabaton or Ghost for that matter. I would not say metal is the most popular music in sweden. Among my friends (not very good sample) I would say 2/3 listen to some metal songs. Growling seems to be the hardest to digest for my friends but I love it.
I think Arch enemy is my favorite metal band from sweden. When it comes to subgenre it is pretty hard to choose one, I think it is either Melodic death metal, or folk metal, but ofcause it can change from day to day and what mood i am in. I also enjoy some power metal and Symphonic metal.
You could make a top 40 list and still only have world class metal. Having a swedish metal band list without Sabaton, Soilwork, At the gates and Dissection just feels wrong but so does removing any of the bands from this list.
At the gates is not in that list!? I see you get many good recommendations in the comments. But I'd like to add The crown. The five first albums are great. On Crowned in terror Tomas Lindberg (At the gates) does the vocals and writes some of the lyrics.
A top ten list of swedish metal bands is incomplete without at least thirty of them.
The first band, Entombed, the singer "Elge", died recently but when I was 13 years old he taught me to play the drums. Thanks to him, I toured Sweden with my band as a drummer, He was a very good drummer and a nice person :)

My favorite swedish metal bands that are not in this lists are:
Amaranthe
Sabaton
Dynazty
The Halo Effect
Tungsten
Rexoria
Metalite
My favorite music genre is Heavy Metal and Power Metal!🤘🤘 My favorite band is Sabaton 😎🤘🤘😎 Sabaton will always be my favorite band! Best band in the whole world if you ask me! 😎😉 Warm And Kind regards from a big Sabaton fan in Northern Sweden🤘 ❤️🇸🇪🇸🇪❤️🤘
Dissection definitely deserved a top 10 spot
It is a shame Jon killed a man, went to jail and then later killed himself. His music is amazing.
Meshuggah should be number 1 simply because of their influence. Metal in general they should be put high in.
Wether you like them or not, you can’t deny they are one of the most influential metal bands of the last 2 or 3 decades.
I would say that Bathory should be no1. If you Ask any band on that list of there influences they say Bathory.
@@danieljansson2310 Yeah, Bathory is the kind of band that the musicians listened to and learned from. Definitely a deserved spot.
@@danieljansson2310
No, Meshuggah is still more influential, they created djent, majority of today’s metal is djent or djent adjacent.
Tomas’ style of drumming is also quite influential, although he wasn’t first with it, he did it very well, if not the best.
Bathory are my number 1 favourite band. Sadly the guy from the band died in around 2004. He was a pioneer and invented both black metal and viking metal.
As a sucker for Metalcore and melodic. here's a list of a few i like (not in specific order)
1. Imminence
2. Dead By April
3. Orbit Culture
4. dEMOTIONAL
5. Smash Into Pieces
6. Self Deception
7. Follow The Cipher
8. Escape The Day
9. Rave The Reqviem
10. Amaranthe
11. Scar Symmetry
12. In Flames
13. Sonic Syndicate
14. Eyes Wide Open
15. Evergrey
16. THE DAY WE LEFT EARTH
No Arch Enemy in that list? Melodic as f*ck!
Yes, my guy. We have more than 10 metal bands xD my favourite from this list is in flames 😚
I think Ghost can fill pretty big stadiums too but I guess you could argue if they are metal
I like sabaton and hammerfall among others. There are so many bands in this genre here in Sweden.
My top 5:
1. Orbit Culture
2. Sabaton
3. In Flames
4. Amon Amarth
5. Dark Tranquillity
Bathory are the best Swedish metal band. One of the most important metal bands ever.
Mustasch,Avatar and Clawfinger.Ohh and Sabaton.
freakin vibed with that a super lot. top musical content. super glad I came across your channel! 😵A suggestion as well! October Ends' new song is on a whole other level. You should react to their new song! 🔥
Definitely In Flames, Mesuggah, At The Gates and loads more☺️
I practically agree with the list. I'm familiar with all of the bands. I guess because I'm a gen X metal head living close to Sweden. I discovered Opeth in 1998 and they blew me away instantly. Also love their new prog rock style
In Flames has my biggest respect of all rockbands!
You should check out Brothers of Metal, nice music and some humor thrown in as well 😊
We are very proud of our Metal music export 😊 You should check out Avatar as well their Bloody Angel live performance is gold! 🤘
My favourite Swedish Band wasn’t even in this video “Candlemass”
Therion was one of the first Swedish Metal Bands i listened, Opeth and Arch Enemy amongst my favs too
There are hundred of Swedish metal bands that made it big internationally and hundreds more that are really good..... same as all nordic countries to be honest and yes I think (have not fact checked this, just heard it a bunch of times) that Sweden has the most metalheads per capita in the world.
You should check out Sabaton and Majestica.
Best Swedish metal band is Candlemass.
all of them you saw is very popular in Sweden and in some big part of the world, but we have alot of more popular Metalbands that are famous all over the world.
Missed the arguably biggest two, Sabaton and Ghost
I really like brothers of metal which are quite new. Also norse inspired.
My favorite band is Vildhjarta. They are the forerunners of a sub-genre called "thall", which is also a sub-genre of a sub-genre called "djent".
Meshuggah or Amon Amarth are #1 depending on my mood.
I'm just going to point out one thing, since this was about Swedish music;
- Sweden has *a lot* of great punk and prog music!
No mentions of Scar Symmetry 😮
My favorite melodic death metal band.
therion was the first real symphonic metal band.. evolved from a more death metal band.. they need way more recognition
Mert, it would be interesting to hear your top Scottish Metal bands. BTW Candlemass is my top
For me Candlemass is always number one Swedish band!
Quorthon aka bathory is a L E G E N D!!!!!!! Influenced many genres of metal top albums first wave of black metal viking metal top albums and a true pioneer.Sadly he left us early.. respect r.i.p. in VALHALA!!!
My top ten list of Swedish metal: Avatar, Candlemass, Therion, Lillasyster, Heavy load, Sabaton, Backyard babies, Hammerfall, Europe and Desultory.
Yeah I would say that’s an alright list. Some of my favorites are:
Bathory, Marduk, Sarcator, Eternal Evil, Gehennah, Watain, Dismember, Nifelheim, Bastard Priest etc.
I think this list is a few years old, still good but a bit outdated. For now I would say that for instance Orbite Culture, The Halo effect, Sabaton and a few others would make the list
If you like Nightwish, you should really check out Sabaton... no 1 imo....
So, i will instead give a shoutout to some bands for either being childhood friends or who i got to know while we played on tours/festivals together:
Avatar
Månegarm
Fejd
Amon Amarth
Warheim
Istapp
Thyrfing
The Last Band
They all deserve their praise.
I of course did the Swedish thing here and never mentioned my own band 😂
Metal is Extremely popular in Sweden.😊
My favorit band are Sabaton,Amon Amarth,Arch Enemy listen to them daily.
Sabaton, Miseration. At the gates, Scar symmetry, Majestica, Dismember, Narnia, Astral Doors, Candlemass and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Entombed. Best Swedish metal band ever.
Majestica, Tommy has a great voice and guitar skils
I think Arch enemy is my favorite metal band from sweden.
When it comes to subgenre it is pretty hard to choose one, I think it is either Melodic death metal, or folk metal, but ofcause it can change from day to day and what mood i am in. I also enjoy some power metal and Symphonic metal.
Out of the lot - the ones that stand out in my opinion are Meshuggah and Opeth - stellar bands with an amazing catalogue.
You could make a top 40 list and still only have world class metal. Having a swedish metal band list without Sabaton, Soilwork, At the gates and Dissection just feels wrong but so does removing any of the bands from this list.
Bathory is amazing. Candlemass, Dissection, Katatonia and so many more could be on this list.
I have to put in a word for Soilwork, I just love them. My favourite song is Stålfågel.
Gates of ishtar
Dissection
and all the Dan Swäno bands 😊
1. Gotham City
2. Zone Zero
3. Heavy Load
4. Mindless Sinner
5. Axewitch
6. Witch
7. Onyx
8. Rubycon
9. Insane
10. Highlight
Sabaton is the onesI listen to most, Majestica, Smash into pieces, Hammerfall and the OG Europe
Not so many of my personal list of top 10 metal bands from Sweden.. But good bands overall for sure.
Proud swede 👋👌
Fantastic bands all of them. Also check out Witchcraft, At the Gates and Skraeckoedlan.
At the gates is not in that list!?
I see you get many good recommendations in the comments. But I'd like to add The crown. The five first albums are great. On Crowned in terror Tomas Lindberg (At the gates) does the vocals and writes some of the lyrics.
