  • Oh silly youtubers, what will you fall for next? Some filmmakers actually need a camera cage. They need that bigger monitor and have to attach it somewhere. They're using v mount batteries or other external power solutions etc. Building a little cinema rig is necessarry for some jobs. But youtubers? Most youtubers buy cameras cages just because they look cool lol.

    Adding weight and volume to a rig is a good thing for handheld use.
    Unless you’re going for a very shaky style, your hands SHOULD NOT directly touch the lens housing or camera body.
    It’s all about circles and tangential velocity. Y axis and x axis circles - your sphere of control, yaw and pitch/pan and tilt. At a longer radius, you need more velocity to cover the same movement in the same amount of time. It’s a lot to type out, but basically you have more granular control over the camera the further away your hands are but past a certain point there are diminishing returns on this principle. If you have your hands at the minimal possible separation from the imaging site and lens, then the smallest little inputs from your hands will be much more drastic in your footage.
    For weight, the vibrations and small jerky motions are easier to manage if you are holding something heavy. This is anecdotal, but I know I have more steady hand held performance on a heavier rig than a lightweight magnesium camera body. When you start to tremble from it being too heavy, go gym. Lol jk. Just practice and find a weight that feels like a good balance.
    I’d recommend people think twice before buying a cage, still. But weight and volume painted as a pointless “monstrosity” is a vague generalization that overlooks the benefits of those systems.
    Shout out my fellow box camera brain users dependent on having a cage 😂

      What is the benefit of shotgun mic over wireless mic. I just got a Lark wireless mic and the audio is so much better (i'm a noob just starting out). I still see pros with no budget limits use shotgun mics so there must be some reason

    • @GearlessChris
      @GearlessChris 10 місяців тому

      @@user-DaleAcosta I got that particular Sennheiser mostly because of the wind protection, it also is pretty small compared to my Sennheiser MKE 600, and the 400 has switches for boosting or cutting the signal. I found with my Sony X3000 camera, the signal from the Rode Micro was so strong it would clip audio most of the time.

    Instead of a cage, you can wrap your action camera in a grapefruit sized ball of bubble wrap. Then cover it with duct tape, to hold the bubble wrap on. Now you're protected ! But unfortunately, the lens is now blocked. So find a three quarter inch wood boring bit and drill down to the lens. It may take a few trial holes to find the lens, unless you were clever enough to mark the spot. While the bit's pilot auger has a tendency to gouge the lens, think of the bright side. Now you will have amazing lens flares, and you didn't even have to pay for the modification. Of course, if you make the same mistake that I did (choosing bubble wrap with connected cells) you will have to redo the process after the bubble wrap deflates. The good news is you won't have to wait very long because it deflates in a few seconds. Another bit of good news is due to modern technology. If this had been a film camera, all the holes in the camera made by bad guesses about the lens location would be light leaks. And these are too, but black silicone RTV can plug those holes. See! Modern technology. No need for fancy brackets to connect accessories. More duct tape. Anyways, HTH.

      Genius 🤩
      Plus you could throw it at your friends head while playing in the sea getting great action footage and it wouldnt sink, with added application for live streaming Tsunamis until the cell towers went under, but then you could get an Elon Musk NWO phone and do it via satellite 👍🏼

    I also utterly despise the camera cage. BUT I have a Sony ZV-E1 and I'm moving to Las Vegas. As hot as the cam can get at longer run times for Full Frame 4k 60fps I'm gonna need that Tilta Cooling System. I am such an "Anti-Cage Guy" I considered only buying Tilta's bottom plate with the hinge to click the Tilta fan into place and run a battery for the Tilta fan from my chest pouch with the USB chord sticking out (when I need it). However, it be nice to have a power source mount point for the cooling system anyway and for only about 60 bucks extra it's worth it to have the mini cage, bottom plate, handle and extra mounting points with the cooling system. With the tilta stuff on and the new cyborg level autofocus along with the current software it pretty much makes the cam better than the FX3.

      I bought a reasonable high quality smartphone clamp for my EOS R7. When making the tilting axis a bit more stiff, you can also use the clamp without smartphone as "handle" to grip the camera "videographer like" on top. Ofc only with lighter lenses, still a hot shoe mount. I never understood this cage nonsense unless you really needed it.

    Personally i do at times use the smallrig cage on the dji action4 but in this case i think as a mic the 'Wave W1-C Wireless Lavalier Microphone" makes more sense its wireless 8grams and works well no convertor neeeded since its usb-c. I use it on my bicycle videos where the camera is near the headlight (in its original cage) but the mic is somewhere on the back of the bicycle with a massive fluffly. The only downside is that the smallrig mic is not made anymore.. you can find them still i got mine for 70 euro at some discount.

    Small Rig cage resulted in the death of my GoPro 10. Pushing my finger thru the hole to use the power button, allowed the edge of my fingernail to wear away the rubber part of the button. In other words, with the Small Rig cage, you can't operate the buttons with the "flat" part of your finger.

    I wasted money on a cage. I can see it if you’re only doing horizontal video and you’re not really changing lenses while you’re doing that. Otherwise, it’s just a hindrance. A good L-bracket would be a lot more useful for most people. Gives you quick and easy landscape or portrait orientation on a tripod or monopod with any Arca type head, because both bottom and side already serve as Arca plates. Not as easy to do vertical video with a cage rig. You can still add an extra cold shoe atop the side of some L-brackets if you need it.

I had one for my 6400, but then I always use a tripod so can attach all my bits to the cage held up by a tripod... hand held it's too impractical for me, heavy restrictive. Hand held I use a $2 silicone cover accessory for bag scrapes. The cage is not for protection though it looks like it is... a fall is still a fall regardless of cage, the internals will get shocked. The silicone coat is likely better than the metal cage.

    Hello Mr. Conspiracies,
    though I dont disagree with your opinion on cages for safety you did miss one very common use for cages: the second tripod-screwhole. Having your camera unscrew itself during a shoot is super annoying and even the fx3 only has a single screwhole.
    Ye if you only go handheld or dont Touch your cam on the tripod its different, but thats not all youtube-shoots.
    Besides that a cage can help with balancing for tripod or shoulder-rig usage. Shifting the weight back to compensate for heavy lenses can help a lot.

    I got a cage for my a7c and out it on the day I bought it. It has lived on a tripod since. Never have I taken it out nor has it ever needed to be protected. I guess you’re right, I fell for the “ you can build your setup with this cage” scam.

    i just got a cage for my M50 and i kinda hate it, i mean, it gives it so much stability hand held, i just shot the most stable low to the ground video of my cats i have ever shot... and was thanks to the weight... but i hate it so much, it does not fit in my bag anymore, its heavy and i don't feel like its needed at all... at least not for me... i will try to keep using and learning to use it, and if i don't like it at all, i will sell it and that's it.
    btw mine was 20 euros in aliexpress LOL.

    Buy a pistol grip, mount the camera backwards, then spray it with insulation foam after it dries, cut away the extra and you have the perfect rig. Oh yes the rain does kill, the pipes in the dome are lead, when they turn on the water...beware! I like the fuzzy dark cloud like thing in the video!

    I had a cage for my alpha for a while, thought it would protect against scratches and such. It was a pain putting it in and taking it out though, don't get me started on the squirrel army that surrounded it every day trying to get at the peanut butter on the hot shoe.

    • @thatcherfreeman
      @thatcherfreeman 10 місяців тому +1

      I think you're supposed to just leave the camera in the cage all the time. If you're taking it out all the time, the cage life probably isn't for you tbh

    • @flightographist
      @flightographist 10 місяців тому

      The cage is intended to be used when you rig it, if you are not rigged and not in studio or on set why would you lug around all the extra weight? Not everyone has multiple bodies laying around, try and remember that.@@thatcherfreeman

    Didn’t you change the auto focus settings so that it stays locked onto your face longer? I think you’ll have to change that again if you wanna be able to throw things up in front of your face and have the Nikon focus on them.

  • @koma2000music

    You don't need a cage if you don't have a camera! ... Thanks for the Nikon autofocus test, it focuses quite smoothly IMO. I actually like that it prioritises the face, and finds it easily.
