Hello Stacey [ StaceyRPG ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tar-rya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

Welcome to the Nightwish world! Great reaction. They are not well-known in the US, but they're very big in Europe and South America. They also tour in the US. Super talented band and their live performances are really legendary. You'll read comments about their live performances a lot 😄

Tarja, the lead singer here, has classical training.
Tarja was Nightwish's first lead singer. They have had 3 and the current one is Floor Jansen.
You'll probably get a lot of requests to react to Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 with Floor, it is amazing, mind blowing performance!🔥🔥
I'll recommend another song from Nightwish. It is called Slaying the Dreamer and it's live from End of an Era. It is also with Tarja as the lead singer😊

Hi Stacey, you're a breath of fresh air in the Reaction Video world. You're smart and savvy, you pick up the details, you're energetic, fun to watch and you get it right every time. It's showing, because you've more than quadrupled subscribers just in the few days since I decided to witness you're journey. For recommendations, Nightwish, Ghost Love Score is apparently the most reacted to song on UA-cam so you probably have to go there. At some point I would steer you back in history to 1969 to 1999. Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, Black Sabbath (Ozzy AND Dio), AC/DC, Disturbed, ZZ Top, Journey, Triumph, Deep Purple, Metallica, Van Halen, Queensryche and so many more are all bands who have popped out the eyeballs and dropped every chin, in every reaction video there is.

    Hi Stacey, greetings from UK
That was a great reaction, thank you 😉
I will add my voice to others who will recommend the song "Ghost Love Score" from the Wacken 2013 concert. Wacken (pronounced Vah-ken) is a small town in Northern Germany who once every year in August host one of the biggest Metal festivals in the world. Nightwish headlined this festival in 2013 and the concert has gone down in history as one of the best ever!
"Ghost Love Score" from that concert is one of the three most reacted to songs in UA-cam history! 😁
Metal music has several sub-genres. The style that Nightwish play is called Symphonic Metal. They compose and record music with several world class orchestras and choirs, and use backing tracks and midi on the keyboard to help enrich their sound

Not only was this performance live, but Tarja actually had the flu during this concert.... I still can not believe how she was able to perform an entire concert with the flu, but she did it, like the metal godess she is!
Welcome to the fantastic world of symphonic metal, in which Nightwish is one of the absolute pioneers, but there are a lot of great bands nowadays, Within Temptation, Epica, Amberian Dawn, Xandria and Leves Eyes just to name a few
I have watched a couple of your reactions and you have definately got a new subscriber here!

She does indeed have what they call classical training. Not to the point where she could work as a classical opera singer .... the career of Nightwish took of when they were pretty young and, well, this combo worked pretty damn well as-is. Better than with a strictly pure classical sound.
Nightwish has had 3 singers over the decades. All unique, all pretty damn cool.

Andrew Lloyd Weber loved this version also. Oh no you asked for more Nightwish 🤣😮 everyone will come flooding in now with links to other live performances mostly with Floor their current singer, which is fine as she is is amazing as well. Any song from their Wacken 2013 concert is pretty epic...but I love the duets with Marco (the male vocalist here) such as Ghost River, Romanticide or Last Ride of the Day, as having two top tier singers in a band is so rare!

Welcome to the magical world of Nightwish. This is a fantastic band, composed of a group of truly talented musicians who all play for the song, not to show off their own particular expertise. The result is the proverbial "whole being greater than the sum of its parts." You will find that each song is different, but has that wonderful Nightwish touch. And, you will also find that there isn't a bad song in the bunch. If you follow General Gabriel's list you will have the best performances for each song, but don't feel that you are constrained to follow that list in order. Go where your heart leads. I have just subscribed and will be following your journey with great interest.

So yeah... Nightwish is probably the deepest rabbit hole on UA-cam, and if you follow the rabbit, like Alice did, you'll find yourself in a wonderful wonderland, full of magic. Tuomas, the keyboardist, founder, and main composer of the band, is a big fan of Disney (just like me), and he likes to put some Disney references here and there in some of Nightwish's songs, like the above mentioned Alice, and Peter Pan. You should check out his side projects, an album called The Life And Times of Scrooge McDuck, and a band called Auri, together with his wife, and Troy, another member of Nightwish. When you get to Ghost Love Score, the Wacken 2013 version, you will undoubtedly get what we Nightwish fans like to call a "Floorgasm" 😁 A little play on words, her name is Floor, and she is the third vocalist in Nightwish. What makes me a little sad though, is that noone seems to notice the "Tarjagasm" at 2:50 in this performance. Floor is amazing, both on stage, and off it, but Tarja, the first Nightwish vocalist, had it too.
There is a more recent Nightwish version of Phantom of the Opera, where Floor sings together with Henk Poort, who she first met in the dutch TV show Beste Zangers. Henk wanted to perform Phantom of the Opera with Nightwish, which they later did. He actually was the dutch Phantom, and if I understand it correctly, he was Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite Phantom. If you want to dig a little side burrow in the rabbit hole, I can recommend watching the videos Floor recorded from her home during the pandemic, where she lets us into her home, and shows another reason why she is so loved, she's not just a pretty voice. Great first reaction to Nightwish, I am looking forward to more 😊

If you like theater with a rock/metal edge and rock operas you definitely came to the right place. The whole of symphonic metal is very theatrical per se, and then there's stuff like Ayreon and Avantasia doing actual rock operas with multiple singers/characters, etc. The rabbit hole goes deep :)

So glad I came across this Sta cey. Nightwish are theatre. This version was some years ago - if you like phantom so much - I suggest you look at Nightwish's latest version (a couple of years ago) with the present lead singer Floor Jansen accompanied by Henk Poorte - who was the Dutch phantom for many years. They performed it on a Dutch TV show too called 'Beste Zangers'. But there's so much more to Nightwish - definitely Ghost Love Score at Wacken Festival 2013 first!! Cinematic Metal at it's best!!😊

Well Gabriel has beaten me to it -- again!!! Ha Ha! Obviously lots of info to dig into. However, I could mention one or two points that are most important. The band had three singers: Tarja, Anette Olson, and Floor Jansen (current). Everyone kind of has their favorites. Much of the popularity of the band now revolves around the singing of Floor. But you are off to a good start by beginning with their original singer. It can lead into a very interesting subsequent video: you see, Floor recorded a VERY FAMOUS version of "Phantom" as part of a Dutch singing show called "Beste Zangers". I will try and leave the link in the "Reply" section below (as a notorious poster UA-cam cancels any links I leave in the main comment. I believe Gabriel has the same problem). If you wanted, you could then follow that video with one of Nightwish and Floor's most popular songs, "Ever Dream", from the Wacken concert of 2013 (link below), as a great intro to both Floor, and the current (since 2013) rendition of Nightwish.
Second, the actual MOST POPULAR song and video of them all is "Ghost Love Score", from Wacken. The only problem here (perhaps someone already warned you?), is that EVERYBODY does Ghost Love Score. It's actually the most reacted to of all music videos with over 1,300 UA-cam posted reaction videos on it. So perhaps better to start a little of the beaten track? PLUS, one of Nightwish's most beloved songs, "The Poet and the Pendulum", is about the breakup of the band with Tarja, and Tuomas (leader and keyboardist) feelings of depression and suicide after this happened, which he then encapsulated in this song. Very famous, but Nightwish Army fans "freak out" if the reviewer didn't do any research on the fact beforehand. By watching Tarja's video first, you have already got half way there! ☺🤗

First time here because of the thumbnail, and I’m so glad that your introduction to nightwish is with Tarja, what a great reaction! Stick to tarja if you like Nightwish, and eventually you’ll get to what everyone loves now which is Floor’s era. Songs like Crownless and Gethesmane are great gems with tarja as a performer and nightwish in their golden era. Cheers! Had to subscribe after this :)

@@Alysonmarie-2399 I said "not flawless", and I'm sure Tarja will be the first who would agree with that. She is down-to-earth like that. She didn't have opera training, she studied Lied singing, which is close to opera but not quite. I think she herself said to be able to sing an actual opera she'd need at least a year of very intense training. It was in an interview after the Nightwish split. It doesn't take away from her abilities though!! As I said, she is amazing in what she does and I love her. If she'd wanted to become an opera singer, I'm sure she would've done great with it. But I'm glad she dedicated herself to both classical AND rock

Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish and Symphonic Metal! There is a bit of an in joke with fans regarding professional voice coaches and opera singers who react to this song, and it goes something like "I came for Tarja....I stayed for Marco!" Great reaction, loved your enthusiasm and how much you embraced a new genre of music playing with a song you clearly know and love. Andrew Lloyd Webber also gives this version a huge thumbs up!

if you really want hard dark spell-binding Tarja (and Marko too) with Nightwish:
(even some rocking on invisible guitar, head windmills, and etc theatrics too)
(remember, the concerts/albums/covers must be BEFORE 2006, for Tarja's performances)
    (not ranked, just listed)
    1. Slaying the Dreamer
    2. Planet Hell
    3. Wishmaster
    4. Kinslayer
    5. Ghost Love Score
    6. The Siren
    7. End of All Hope
    8. Dead to the World
    9. 10th Man Down
    -----------------------------------
    Nightwish's 3 singers:
    1. Tarja (original singer): 1995 to 2005
    2. Annette: 2006 to 2012
    3. Floor (current singer): 2013 to 2020+
everyone knows Floor, she's super popular with everyone, especially right now, and is a really good singer, having a huge variety of singing capability (pop, classical/opera, belting, growling/raspy), able to sing nightwish's old songs that were for Tarja's classical/opera singing, as well as new songs for her own variety/range of singing abilities
Unfortunately for Annette, she's a pop/rock singer, and a very good singer too, but her pop/rock singing just didn't go that well with nightwish's music, which was made for Tarja's dark classical/opera singing. So, usually, she gets left out.
so, it comes down to "Targasm” (Tarja) vs “Floorgasm” (Floor) in terms of the Nightwish singers in who you like most, if you like classical/opera singing better, Tarja is better at it, but that's all she does back when with nightwish, as nightwish was created for tarja's unique dark operatic singing/voice, (now with her own band, or solo, she does a greater range of singing), but she does it really well, she's really got a beautiful voice, if you like more pop singing, belting and growling/raspy, with or without classical/opera singing, than you like Floor better
I knew nightwish from the early 2000s, so Nightwish will always be with Tarja, but Nightwish with Floor is really good too, but it's Tarja, who's my favorite singer with nightwish
(many others will help you out with Floor's songs, so I'll just stick to Tarja's songs here)
    ----------
if you do like Tarja with nightwish, here's some good ones:
(just make sure the song performances are before 2006, else it's not tarja who is singing)
    (NOT ranked, just listed)
    1. End of an Era (her last concert with nightwish, hard to find good quality and the entire concert, as it gets taken down)
    2. Phantom of the Opera (her duet with Marco, really good, both of them together, this song was actually used in the Phantom of the Opera remake movie in 2004)
    3. Wishmaster
    4. Planet Hell (marco sings in this song as well)
    5. End of All Hope
    6. Dead Boy's Poem
    7. Nemo (watch the official music video and also her live performance of it)
    8. Kinslayer
    9. she is my sin
    10. wish I had an angel
    11. slaying the dreamer
    12. the siren
    13. dead to the world
    14. 10th man down
    15. walking in the air
    16. ghost love score
    17. dark chest of wonders
    18. bless the child
    and many more too
    ------
this is about the 'phantom of the opera' with tarja nightwish, but it applies to tarja for all other NW songs too:
Tarja has her own stage performance/presence, but the focus is on the entire band (much more respectful), unlike with floor, where the focus is almost entirely on her, and also, Phantom of the Opera isn't about that much showmanship, so you're not seeing more of Tarja's performance/presence (love how the camera work and Tarja worked together, with her ducking down, seeing Marcus as he delivered his singing, and then Tarja stands back up, seeing her face back in the camera as Marco's part ends and hers begins again, Tarja is really such a team player, as she could have had all the focus upon herself, like Floor gets, but instead she chooses to give the entire band the respect and focus that they too deserve, it's not all about Tarja, like it is with Floor, despite how good Tarja is and thus how she could be the entire focus with nightwish, as is Floor with nightwish)
there's other songs, where Tarja was way way way more stage performance/presence/showmanship, including hair windmills, rocking an invisible guitar along with empuu rocking his guitar, along with her doing her squatting too as she sings and taps her foot/leg to it, as she's swinging those hips too, along with her getting the crowd involved as well too, and etc stuff, you got to watch way more songs, to really see her amazing stage presence/performance and showmanship, as Phantom of the Opera is likely the one song with the least of that stuff, due to the nature of the song itself, being about their singing (contrasting and then cacophonous harmonous duet, nothing can compete with Tarja and Marco voices duet'ing), though Marco and Tarja had a bit of showmanship and fun snuck into it, with Marco pointing to his face and Tarja's facial expression reactions, while both song their parts

Greetings, Stacey. And welcome to Nightwish and symphonic metal.
I would normally recommend reactors to watch the version by Floor Jansen and Henk Poort immediately after seeing this.
But since this is actually your first Nightwish video, I'm going to go with the comments on this one.
"Ghost Love Score" only to make sure your journey is on the right path and you get the full experience out of it.
Besides, it's better to get to know Floor Jansen this way first so that you familiarize yourself with her and the band before going for her solo performances.
The version you're looking for is "Live at Wacken 2013".
And please look for the videos uploaded by Nightwish or Nuclear Blast Records for best quality.
The Nightwish Army is very passionate about their band, so I have to mention a few things first. Try not to talk over the video especially the singer.
As an advice, pause the video if needed, and take it back 5 or 10 secs before you continue.
Some people will get triggered if they hear you compare Floor to Amy Lee. 8 out of 10 people who watch that video make that comparison and some just don't know how else to process that. lol
Please ask questions, the Army will be more than happy to answer.
If you really enjoyed this, you're going to love the 2013 to now Era with singer Floor Jansen.
She is from the Netherlands and the band hails from Kitee, Finland.
The band started with 5 members but in 2009, added the talents of a multi instrumentalist from the UK, Troy Donockley.
At the time he appeared on their studio albums as a guest musician and even toured with them.
As luck would have it Floor and Troy both became permanent members in June 2013.
I know this is a lot to take in after your first video, but it'll be worth it.
Gabriel Bardac already left you his message.
Follow his blueprint for the best enjoyable experience.
You're going to love this journey. The rabbit hole goes deep, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.
    😊❤️🤘🤘
    Already subscribed.
Can't wait to see the rest of your journey into the Nightwish rabbit hole!! ❤️

    Hello Stace.
One thing you may notice is the extensive collaborations between various band members in the European Metal/Prog scene.
If you use some of those collaborative 'hubs' as a jump-off point, you will introduce yourself to an incredible wide variety of bands and musicians... the horizons are very broad.
The band Nightwish has had 3 female lead singers : Tarja (the singer in this version of Phantom) left in 2005, followed by Annette Olzen who left in early 2012. The current singer is Floor Jansen, and she is impossibly talented... just beyond stunning. She actually HAS 'sung the phonebook' and made it interesting (but don't bother looking for that video at this point.... there's 50 or so titles to watch before you go there, lol.
To really get the full effect of Nightwish and many of the other European bands, setting aside preconceived notions of song construction and simple melodic patterns (repeating over and over) can be set aside... yes, you may find a verse/chorus/verse pattern here and there, but often there is much more.
I don't think you will be one to 'sit back and enjoy' the band... you look like you get fully engaged.
You will have a blast. (my prediction... not a commandment)
Oh, and make room for some entirely new songlists... you might not go back to whatever you've been listening to in the past.
    I know I haven't.

Nightwish Medical Tent Tooth Repositioner, head-bang-collision triage specialist, and Mosh Pit Search and Rescue team member.

Marko Hietala is no Antonio Banderas ;-) For me, this version is closer to the original novel. The original Phantom is ruthless and a murderer and a rock singer fits that bill better than an opera singer. There is another version of the song, closer to the musical original, with an opera singer as the Phantom. The current singer had promised him a joint performance and you saw it on the card at the end of the video:
Nightwish - The Phantom Of The Opera (ft. Henk Poort) (LIVE)
In the early 2000s, Nightwish, together with Within Temptation, established symphonic metal as a subgenre and Tarja established opera singing in metal.
This is the first singer, Tarja Turunen. Good chemistry is deceptive. Due to artistic and private differences, she was fired immediately after this concert. That's why the live album is called "End of an Era". Tarja has also remained successful solo:
Tarja Shadow Play live Circus Life version
If you follow Gabriel's list you will come to Ghost love Score
at. It is the song with the most reaction videos on UA-cam.
Marko is already the band's second bassist and was already a well-known singer. Unfortunately he left the band in 2021 due to depression, but is currently touring solo. The current video, as guest singer:
EXIT EDEN - Run! feat. Marko Hietala (Official Video) | Napalm Records
Nightwish's second singer Anette Olzen lost in the duel Tarja against Floor. Her jazzy pop voice didn't suit Nightwish and she was fired from an ongoing tour two days before the next concert. Only works really well for a few songs:
Nightwish - Slow Love Slow live Montreux Jazz Festival 2012 HQ
She is still active too, but is still just the ex-Nightwish singer:
The Dark Element - "Songs The Night Sings"
    Other Symphonics:
Within Temptation - Bleed Out (official music video)
VISIONS OF ATLANTIS - Pirates Will Return (Official Live Video) | Napalm Records
Blackbriar - Mortal Remains (Official Music Video)

Thank you for your reaction, Stacey. I defy anyone to find a better version of the Phantom than this one. As you said, flawless. There are so many comments about whether it was Tarja or Marko that really made this version so amazing. Both were brilliant but in reality, it is the combination of the two of the them together that makes it so special. There are many special moments of Tarja era Nightwish, as already mentioned. Tarja was sacked after the concert and started her own solo career, which is also amazing and really showcases just how brilliant she is. A couple of examples that you must try out are her song Innocence live, ua-cam.com/video/Lq-genEQNLA/v-deo.html and her cover of the Muse song, Supremacy, live ua-cam.com/video/e5zEb5xFlIE/v-deo.html. Just a suggestion; if you enjoy the fusion of rock and orchestral music, allow me to suggest ‘Two Steps From Hell’. You’ve prolly already heard their music and didn’t realize it. They primarily write music for movie and video game trailers, and their music has been featured in trailers for several Harry Potter movies, the Chris Pine Star Trek reboot, Indiana Jones, No Country For Old Men, and many others. Their music is more orchestra-focused than rock-oriented, so it may not be exactly to your taste. But it’s extremely theatrical (movie trailers, duh) and because trailers usually only run 2-3 minutes, their compositions are typically a brief emotional roller-coaster ride. Each one is a musical journey. Their slogan is “Music makes you braver”, and after listening to pretty much any of their compositions, you really feel like you could run through a wall, and take on a dragon.
Excellent choices would be “Dragonwing”, “Flight of the Silverbird”, “To Glory”, or a longer love song-esque called “Soñera”. A few final notes, TSFH isn’t a band, it’s a music production company, comprised of two composers. And while most of their music is instrumental (again, movie trailers) when they compose for themselves, their lyrics can be English, Latin, Norwegian (one gentleman is from Norway) or who knows what. I think you might enjoy their work.

Why not got to the source (wink wink) and try "Everybody dies" from the Ayreon Universe show. This concert was a best-of but he did 2 others wich are way closer to the albums which contain a complete story. "The theatre equation" and "Electric Castle live".
