  • Richard's appearance on Japanese TV in December 1996 included a countdown of the best selling singles in Japan, a special Top of the World video, interview and perfroming Karen's Theme on piano.
I've seen clips of these on UA-cam, but never a complete version as uploaded here.

Really creepy how 1996 Richard was inserted in Top of the World.

It's great how they inserted 1996 Richard into the "Top Of The World" clip. Or was it very early AI? 😮😊

Like how did they do that?!

@@leinpacheco5365My theory is that they used green screen, a filler actress for Richard’s close up and they overlaid the 1976 performance with current Richard. Also love the Mariah pfp btw

@@amazingstarzz I love Mariah as well, but The Carpenters will always hold a special place in my heart. I grew alongside their music.

For, the “Top of the World” performance, how were the 1996 Richard and the 1976 Karen were paired together? Was it a live performance with an actress who was dressed as Karen, and was the live performance morphed with computer-generated imagery based on the original music video?

It looks like they did have a "stand-in" for a short part. I was no prepared for how emotional this illusion made me feel. Especially the "skootching" on the piano bench at the end.

@@kwpresThat and also i think they transposed/burned the 2 VHS/Films to create an overlay somehow

Who was the actress dressed as Karen? Was she a Japanese actress? I couldn’t tell because the camera was too far away from where she was dancing.

Billy, I have never seen that promo film used in the clip for "I need to be in love." Is there a complete version available somewhere?

There is, but unfortunately it's completely prohibited to upload it on here and it gets blocked immediately.

@@carpentersismIt possible for you to upload it on Google Drive or another site and share the link?

@@carpentersism thanks. How much of this is stuff that Richard can't do anything about? Or is he reticent to put it up? I'm guessing 40 years ago people had no idea what the long term impact of "rights" would have on long-term promotion...especially for Carpenters since they essentially ended new material in 1983.

I would really love to have a video explaining the impact they had on Japan. I have no frame of reference to comprehend it and its never been convered in any of the terrible documentaries that focus too much about stupid dieting.
They seem to be even bigger in Japan but how big? Why? Do they continue to be huge in Japan, etc.
