    As a (former) anorexic myself, I could imagine how Karen felt singing this. Some of it was confirmed listening to this interview. Some things they still don't understand. It was thought she was too young for some of the lyrics but that wasn't true. Part of anorexia is trying to be perfect but it's that striving for perfection that prevents intimacy. It breaks my heart that she was never able to experience that. Thanks to her though millions have been able to. After 15 years of an eating disorder I was able to start recovering. I'm fully recovered today AND happily married. It's been 19 years since my last hospitalization and I'm symptom free. If you or a loved one is struggling, know that help and recovery are now possible. We have Karen to thank for a lot of that.

      It's refreshing to hear of your success in your battle with Anorexia. You can certainly understand better than most Karen's ability to be such an Angelic individual in her life yet lie through her teeth about her illness. It's so easy in hindsight to see how it eroded her life yet nowhere did it ever seem to affect her voice. Maybe in her concerts or interviews, but after years of pouring over over a thousand videos I never saw anything that was affected. She had an amazing Soul. Her song "We've Only Just Begun" was a song that I had wanted played at my wedding only for my Bride to nix the idea due to the song being a bit before her time.

    Sang her songs to dad after he lost his speech and ability to walk from stroke. He remembered me singing them over and over through the 70's, so he knew them well, and he loved it, brought him such joy. I've had a few record deals in my life, and no doubt, Karen is who taught me to sing more than anyone.

    The most requested song during my time as Disc Jockey at KELI 1330 AM Tulsa was Close to You with Superstar a very close second. Looking back I still get choked up when I watch her funeral. That was the hardest job of my life the day that I announced her death just minutes after it came across the wire. I can only say that were it not for UA-cam and digital medium the world would have been cheated from hearing what I always said was the Most Recognizable voice on the planet. it NEVER took more than 2 notes of Karen's voice to know who it was.

      “Instant Radio” said Phil Ramone. “You knew it was her on the first note. Uncanny” Quincy J described Karen as “inherently soulful” - she didn’t have to wail or scream, she could hit any note effortlessly and you always heard what she was feeling..,

    The lyric touched me as soon as I heard the song. I didn't realize the song was not a hit in the 70's.

    • @shyman99
      @shyman99 4 роки тому +6

      It was a hit in 1976. It reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Richard's definition of a hit was probably Top 10 on the Hot 100 chart. But unfortunately disco had taken over by 1976 and soft rock was not getting played as much. So it's a testament of how great this song is that it did that well as the second single from an album during this transitional period in music. Great songs outlive fads and that's why this song will always stand the test of time.

    • @graceweber2822

      @@shyman99 Thanks I didn't know this. Richard sure missed the mark when he didn't release "I just fall in love again" as a single years ago.

    • @shyman99
      @shyman99 4 роки тому +2

      @@graceweber2822 - I so adore "I Just Fall In Love Again". To be honest, most of the songs on their albums were good enough to be released as singles. Had they released the song that was later made popular by Anne Murray, it would have been the 4th single from "Passages". The other three didn't make the top 30 (again, the changing music scene) so even Richard would not have been able to convince A&M to release another single. Lush ballads were only played on Adult Contemporary radio at that time and not popular radio. The three singles they released from "Passages" were the ones that were most appealing to pop radio at the time. Anne Murray's version was sped up a bit and shortened, which helped it be played on popular radio. But it doesn't hold a candle to the Carpenters' version.

    • @Coowallsky
      @Coowallsky 3 роки тому

      That wasn’t Richard’s call to make. The record company does that. The problem was the song was over 4 minutes and couldn’t be abridged. It would have also been the 4th single from the LP and they wanted the airwaves clear by the time ‘Christmas portrait’ was released.

    For the very first time, I see a documentary which spent 45 minutes to cover one song, in the course also cover the great legacy of the Carpenters. Excellent song and excellent documentary on my all time favorite musical duo and their also mega-talented associates. I live in California and went to Japan 27 times and know well of the major devotion that country has always had for The Carpenters. In a Lawson Station convenience store in my hotel basement, in between a couple of J-pop songs, was an instrumental cover of "I Need To Be In Love."

  • @denniseudela411
    @denniseudela411 5 років тому +8

    First of all Thanks so much for the producers of this exhaustive and interesting "analysis without paralysis" documentary of this beautiful ballad. The timing of this album came when The Carpenters were starting to have a decline of airplay in the US radio and were branded as "Antiseptic music" being so clean, lush, and perfectly produced & arranged. It is indeed an imperfect world, as most radios then started to divert to loud, noisy music as part of fad evolution (not timeless). HOWEVER, case in point - Japan, thats why they produced this, and just as enthusiastic and well-embraced this song was The Philippines, were it became a No. 1 hit especially to the high school age range. It was so popular & meaningful there that they still play it on the radio even today as if it never left. Even the well underrated follow up album Horizon which was almost basically snubbed by the US radios was a huge hit in the Phil. especially the gems: Love Me For What I Am & I'm Caught Between Goodbye & I Love You. The Filipino people also appreciated The Carpenters' unique talent & style like the Japanese listeners as most of us are very sentimental or hopeless romantics! ;^) ...I'm confident Mr. Richard Carpenter who I highly admire ( I wish I had his talent...but only a selected few can be given such!) together with her beloved late sister can attest for the Filipinos love for their timeless music... he's visited our country & even accompanied former president Gloria M. Arroyo singing a song Richard would have never thought somebody actually knows by heart, the song "I Have You" which is Pres GMA's favorite song during her teenage years! That reflects how much we made their songs a part of us... from the teenagers newly exploring "puppy love" to the president of the country. Whoa! OUR LOVE & APPRECIATION TO THE CARPENTERS!

    Thank you for this tape. Helps heal the loss of Karen and also fills my heart to know she was appreciated. And that everyone that helped make their sound so perfect and beautiful were as genuine as she (Carpenters) were. I was blessed to see them in concert in 1974. I think the only singer close to the beauty of Karen's voice would be Celine Deon. You'll agree music has changed so much away from smooth loving ballad sound and lyrics that we only have our CD's to keep us sane and happy and moody like we were years back. That music is part of our souls indeed. God Bless

    just wow! thank you for this! this song always brought on good memories. the very first time i heard of this song "i need to be in love" was in the philippines when i was in my teens. the song was played over and over on the radio in this little barrio where we used to live, far away even from capital city of manila. as filipinos we knew what good lyrics are, and then coupled that with some awesome melody, and there you would have this gem of a song. back then in the philippines, we have this thing called "songhits" or "jingles," magazine-type binder we bought that comprised listings of contemporaries of old and new songs, with lyrics and chords, so one knows what the lyrics are saying; and if you want to play your guitar there were chords provided as well as basic as you can get to the basic guitar chords from d, c, e, a, b, g, f. with the b minors, a minors, e minors, etc... this is one of these songs i memorized back in the day, and learned to play on the guitar. and also the first song that i knew mentioned the word "imperfect" without a snag ever, it was just a perfect fit there, that i wondered, why a song is so full of these english words that kinda belongs to you in that moment, simple and complex at that time, but you just go on until next day, and you'd hear the song again. fast forward to this moment, the song is always awesome to listen to with karen's magnetic awesome voice. it gets you teary-eyed almost! thank you! :)

    I'm so glad that the solo piano intro was re-added to "I know that I need to be in love." The first copy into of the cd release of A Kind of Hush had what sounded like a flute intro. I just assumed the master had been badly damaged and this was a work around. Carpenter's recording always had excellent sound quality with Now and Then being a possible exception.

    It makes me sad that Richie never got the credit he deserves. He was the genius behind the band. I'm a big fan of his art.

    To me she was the most perfect singer in the world, and I have never quite gotten over her being gone; and also Richard never got enough credit for being a musical genius that he is either. They were a perfect duet.

    Hi Richard, I did your exactsame medley from New London Theatre in 1976 on a sound system and a mic in Paris but no one seemed to like it..! I'll keep working on it though; my favorites are Goodbye to Love, You, Yesterday Once More and Yesterday Once More Reprise and Ave Maria. Hope you and family are really well xxx

    O que é a vida!os anos 70/80 já vai longe, porém a voz inconfundível de Karen continua viva em nossas memórias.
    Não sei como me expressar como cada vez que ouço essa dupla "os Carpenters, volto aos belos anos em que a Karen me faz recordar ela como se fosse hoje em 10/21.
