Dani, thank you for your intelligence and compassion. I am so glad that you continue to feature the legendary Carpenters in your musical analyses. The Carpenters' musical accomplishments were extraordinary. Yet they remained humble and hardworking with all their success. They were a class act!

By the changes in her face alone, let alone the year, you can tell she was quite clearly in her struggle. While not writing this, she sings this as someone who is telling you her story and, by many accounts, this was a clear part of her struggle: her appearence as she saw herself and the yearning for and seeking love and acceptance in her personal life, and feeling she couldn't find it. Shows you that all the fame and love from fans does not overcome personal struggles and one's past in their personal life. That's what counts. That look of the raised eyebrow, grimace, and tilt of the head as if to say 'not for me, well wish I had found it, I never found it' at the end of the song is haunting and extremely telling. Whatever it all is she's feeling, it's all over her face and she looks extremely sad and resigned. She is not wanting to die; she is just so sad. I know that look...

This performance was part of a BBC TV special recorded in London in November 1976 during the Carpenters' European tour. My Mom and I were incredibly fortunate to get tickets for their concert at Birmingham Hippodrome during the same tour and I remember "I need to be in love" being one of the highlights of an absolutley wonderful evening.

It cracks me up when people talk about how amazing her voice is. And it is. But it’s the lyrics of these songs that touch our soul and make us relate to how she feels not how she sounds! Who doesn’t want to be in love how she expresses so eloquently! I pray God let’s us all feel that way someday. She just did us all the favor of not having to say it ourselves. And beautifully I might add lol ❤️

Dani, I enjoyed your video: What can I say about Karen that hasn't been said. I am a huge music lover and in my lifetime I have heard and loved Hundreds and hundreds of music artists and I love them all, but NO ONE can touch the voice of Karen Carpenter. I have never heard such a glorious voice in my life. Her vocals were perfection on every song and nobody had the emotion she had in her voice. I suggest you listen to "I'm Caught Between Goodbye And I Love You" and I am sure you will be blown away as we all are. Karen was a Genius in what she did and not enough is said about her brother Richard who was so Genius in what he did for the "Carpenters Timeless music. Every album every song is just a incredible music experience.. Stay well and take care Dani!!

Thanks Dani for the lovely sentiment. I don't think, from appearance, Karen was too far gone in her disorder in this particular clip. There are other live performances though where you can see it in her face as you get closer to 1982 when she passed. That gaunt, sunken cheek look that I can't bear to watch. Ah, Dani. Her emotion just pours from this. Was this the reason for her quick romance and marriage to Tom Burris? She so needed to be in love and have a family of her own that she rushed to marry an unvetted man that could give her neither? The song is as sad as her life going forward. So beautiful in voice and just wanting what most of us want or are lucky enough to have found.

That wasn't preachy, Dani. Her struggle was due to her perception of a lack of kindness, from what I've read, from her mother and stupid media people. What's amazing about her is how good she is live. This video wasn't dubbed, yet she was on-pitch perfectly with no breaks or mistakes. Can't tell you how many times I've watched a live video of a singer and wondered, "Why does she sound so bad, while she sounded great on the record?" Same with men singers. Karen could sing things the first time and they wouldn't have to do another take, the first one was that good. Effortless is a perfect description. Thanks for doing this one. :)

I liked the Carpenters from when they first hit the scene. After high school I joined the Army Military Police, and got stationed in Germany. I remember I was driving on Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, coming from the Base Exchange. We went there because it was a bigger store than the Army one that was on my post. Anyway, I was getting ready to leave the Base, and it came over AFN Radio in my car, that Karen had died. I remember that I was heartbroken, and just could not believe it. I was not aware she was struggling with anorexia. You get sort of disconnected when your on a small post in Germany. Which was one reason why we would drive the hour to go to the store on the Air Base. It was a very sad time for sure.

I feel although she married, she never really found the love she was looking for. I think the Lord called her home just so she could see just how much she really was loved by so many people around the world. We do need to remember to be nice to others because we don't know what they are going through or dealing with. Great message to send to people Dani ! THANK YOU.

It’s very sad to lose her so early in life, her disorder wasn’t really known in those days. From what I’ve learned the doctors she saw really didn’t know how to treat her or what to treat her for, whether it was physical, emotion or psychological. She herself being insecure didn’t know how damaging her disorder was. Her Brother was devastated and felt guilty for not taking it as seriously as he should have. I
Like your understanding of her & your assessment of her lovely voice. That was a live performance and in those days they didn’t have the enhancements like today. Still her voice was lovely and as you stated “effortless “, her sadness came out in many of her songs. Thank you & God Bless You !! 🙏🏻✝️

I absolutely love this song, Dani. I agree with you. There is so much emotion in this song. And, yes, Karen Carpenter was anorexic, but after several years of studying about Karen Carpenter’s life in part of my spare time, I recently discovered that the reason why Karen Carpenter was driven to anorexia (which resulted in Bulimia caused by emetine intoxication from Ipecac Syrup) was because she wasn’t given as much of her mother Agnes’ love as was given to Richard, Karen’s brother. Karen was criticized by her mother for her hips being “too big”. Karen couldn’t help it. God made her to look like that. Karen’s and Richard’s father Harold had the brink of the musical genetics in the family, while Agnes didn’t have an ear for music at all.

Great review and you are on the money with how sad the Bulimia side of her life was, most people have no idea about the illness and the fact that it is a mental illness my wife suffered with an eating disorder from 16 years old,she wasn't just beautiful on the outside but had a heart of gold and never said or done a harsh thing ever and was only ever concerned about the happiness of others, the sad thing is they are so tormented by how they see themselves regardless of how the world percieves them, they hate themselves from inside and struggle to find happiness, she is in her 50s now and she never managed to conquer the illness. our marriage ended in divorce after 25 years and every time I hear a Carpenters song I cry my soul out and die of shame and guilt of having abandoned the love of my life to her inner demon

by this time , karen was injesting more than 60 weight loss pillls daily . the normal dose was one . yet , she continued to sing like an angel , and put on a face that seemed to say ...i am fine . many great tallents die in the artist world from too much substance abuse , but she really did not realise the effect had on weakening the heart . plus , anorexia fools you to never see your illness . always need to be thinner . she also really did need to be in love . the jerk she married was not the one . she escaped into herself perception of safety . elvis got fat , karen got thin . two vocalists that i believe were far more than just pop singers with great tallent . i met both . last thing karen said to me after a concert in columbus , ohio in 1973 ....was "write me a song " . i wish i had . i still maight . thanks for the tender realization of your review that she WAS ...the melody..........she WAS the song . 'how can you tell the dancer , from the dance " poet ...W,B. yeats.

Karen's favorite song, probably because she sung it with a broken heart.

She started getting skinny around 1974, she's skinny in this video so she was obviously sick. She got a lot skinnier than this.
