- The A & M sound stage and parking lot was the setting for a variety musical concert as various artists participated in a live telethon being transmitted by satellite to Japan August 22nd. Some artists performed inside the sound stage such as The Brothers Johnson, Ray Parker Jr. etc. Richard and Karen emerged, accompanied by Cubby O'Brien, Bob Messenger Tony Peluso and Gary Sims. Alas, just about halfway through their performance a technical fault developed; the technicians lost the audio and so ended the performance.

Interesting video, the Johnson Brothers were there too. Probably to promote artists at A&M records.
They were such awesome live performers, it was a shame they wouldn't go live. Karen looks in really poor health here.
At this stage in the 80s, I read somewhere that she was unable to sing live without feeling tired due to her being too skinny. She gets tired very easily by then.

Was this filmed at Venice Beach? Some of the scenes they show suggest it.
It was such a waste. They should focus 100 percent on karen's fantastic performance of beachwood 45789 instead of the wasting it on other view.

@@aliciareisinger3103 i know it's pre-recorded but still it's a precious clip. Her performance during the 80s is so limited. Every clip during that period is precious.
Lip sync gone wrong! It's obviously lip-synced and then you even hear the tape playback that Karen jokes was a "bee." Then the tape stops altogether!
It's her voice! What a stupid and insensitive comment from a heartless post. 😎
That sucked. But I guess technical difficulties like that were more common back then.

This is the most awkward thing I have ever seen. Karen and Richard Carpenter in a parking lot being hosted by some weird Asian guy, then the tape breaks and everyone tries to pretend like this is normal. EKKK!

What you should’ve been doing during this time was seeking long-term treatment, not promoting another album.
The only thing of significance that came of this lip-synched appearance was a “still shot” that was put on the cover of people magazine after you died. So sad.
Everything should have stopped after the 1980 TV special. By this time (1981) it was just too late.
Holy jesus my dude fucking chill. She was seeking treatment but was far too gone at that point to do anything anyways, let alone physic remember she didn't only die from anorexia but a heart condition brought on by it she didn't anticipate on actually fucking dying. Just focus on your own mistakes and Let her rest you're really not promoting anything here yourself rather than useless rambling that makes you look like an unempathic and apathetic ass. How's that going to help her 30+ years after death?

First, Karen Carpenter went to therapy, but, unfortunately, her therapist turned out to be a sicko loser. She reminds me of Linda Gray from Dallas...she could've been a beautiful lady without that damn illness. Karen wanted to achieve the body of the girl with beautiful blonde hair we see at 2:07, but Karen went too far.
Karen was beautiful. She didn't need blonde hair nor a skinny body. She was great the way she was.
I think they stuck these blonde bombshells in larer videos to imbue their videos with health
