  • In 1987, Richard Carpenter was interviewed by Gary Collins on Gary's show, "Hour Magazine," to publicize the release of Richard's solo album "Time."
    I created this video under another account that I used to have, "Perfect Day."

    Richard looks so good here! He doesn't have that pained, anxious look on his face that he sometimes had in the 1983/84 interviews. (I personally think he was still raw from Karen's passing at that time) And what a shame that Gary Collins turned into such a bad drinker. He was a good interviewer! Another shame is that RC's solo album never took off. I have the vinyl here at my house and I love it!!

      Horror Fan. I cannot agree. In my country (Australia), first cousin marriage is not considered incest and has been perfectly legal since 1961.

      Mary was an adopted first cousin. She was not an actual first cousin by blood. There is a story behind it but that is family business and probably should remain that way as it is personal. I didn't meet the Rudolphs or Tatums honestly, but I do remember meeting a few of the Carpenters, Lynns, and the Bih-----s (the Bih-----s were related by marriage to George and not blood relation - steps). Karen also did tell me the story behind Mary's adoption, but like said, family business. I'm not actual family so not my place.

    Although Richard did not originally approve of Karen's solo album, her tragic passing pushed its release by her fans to hear her voice one last time. Her passing also pushed Richard to continue his creative musical talents by going solo, creating his own album with his voice and instrumental piano & performing for the world. He also finally pursued his own personal life by marrying the love of his life, Mary, and raising 5 beautiful & talented Carpenter children. Karen gave her brother new life.

    • @adriandowningiii8395
      @adriandowningiii8395 4 роки тому +3

      Honestly, Karen told me that she never would have done a solo album if Richard hadn't been the one to suggest doing it in the first place. Karen was happy with all that her and her brother had accomplished together and was looking forward to many more accomplishments as well. Thanks for your good comments and insights. Karen held up the release because she didn't want to deal with 'going solo' type publicity as Karen was happy working with her brother and being a major part of all that.

    Seriously...Karen and Agnes meddled in Richard's love life that contributed to his problems with medications. They are not to blame for his addictions, anymore than he is for Karen's disease. Imperfect human beings, like all of us. Concentrate on the wonderful music, which Richard was a HUGE part of. His solo albums are wonderful.

    • @lvelez1999
      @lvelez1999 7 років тому +13

      No dear friend. You are mistaken. Richard was always wound up from working and touring and was having trouble sleeping. Back then, people did not realize how dangerously addictive qualudes were. Their Mom gave them to Rich to help him sleep. He innocently got addicted. He got help and is healed. Praise God. We have no right to point fingers at anyone when Only God knows.

    • @JaneDoe-zr4px
      @JaneDoe-zr4px 7 років тому +8

      Actually, both of your comments are true. It's been pretty well documented that it was virtually impossible for Richard to have a successful love life while his mother and Karen were around. At the very least, they made it extremely difficult. Keep in mind, eating disorders are accompanied by a myriad of emotional problems, for the patient and their family, and Karen's case was one of the worst that experts had seen. God only knows the true extent of dysfunction that went on in that family.

    • @lvelez1999

      No one is to blame for anyone's problems. His Mom gave him Qualudes to help him sleep. Doctors back then did not know how addictive they actually were.

      Funny Jane. Experts know that brothers and sisters compliment and don't usually compete with one another. I can hardly call any of the 'shrinks' that worked with Karen to be experts by any stretch of the imagination. Honestly, all people make mistakes; experts do not make mistakes; experts are just figments of their own imaginations or, in other words, expert can be a word that 'con artists' bounce around to try and sound credible to those less knowing.

      Actually, Karen was 108 pounds when she passed away on February 4, 1983. Karen called me on the day before, February 3rd, and told me about Tom signing the divorce papers and honestly, Karen was expecting her visitor (menstruation) to start on the next day or so. Karen was doing well. Karen's heart just stopped. It was unexpected. Karen did have a short life line by her thumb, but still unexpected. Karen also had a blood sugar level of over 1100 which would stop anyone's heart, but everyone was so focused on her eating and lack thereof that no one thought about seeing if Karen had developed diabetes.

      Nothing mysterious IMO. She was a victim of her mom's favoritism of her brother, who obviously couldn't see the problem due to being the favorite. All 3 were prone to severe OCD/perfectionism traits & the stress of the industry pushed 2 of them into addictive behavior. 1 just didn't get help in time.

    • @susanb2015
      @susanb2015 4 роки тому

      She did get help. Her family put her in a hospital and she gained weight. But she went right back to starving herself and taking the drug ipecac which made her have the heart attack and killed her. If she didn't take that drug she wouldn't have died. It was on a TV show that goes over celebrities' autopsy reports and deaths.
