Strangest Railroad Crossing Ever! Caboose Leads Train Across, Conductor Flags Traffic

- Most unusual and strangest railroad crossing ever! This railway crossing goes right through a very busy intersection on exempt track. Let me try to explain how this unusual railroad crossing works. First, it is an exempt crossing which means that commercial vehicles transporting passengers ( buses ) and hazardous material trucks or any vehicle does not have to stop unless a train is approaching. The crossing has a light at each side that stays on red for the trains to stop. The train stops at the crossing and the conductor has to get off and use a control that first turns the outer traffic signals from green to red. About 24 seconds later the inner traffic signals turn to red. Now that all of the traffic signals are red, both sides of the railroad line side signals go to green. The conductor uses a hand held radio to tell the engineer how close to the crossing that the train is and lets him know when the train is clear to cross. Once the caboose makes it through, the train stops to pick up the conductor and then proceed on its journey. After the train clears the crossing, the railroad crossing signals go to green and the traffic signals return to normal use. At this point, both of the railroad line side signals go from green to red. An Indiana & Ohio Railway employee explained this to me and told me that this is the only railroad crossing like this in Ohio. I have seen similar railroad crossings but this is the only one that has all of the components that I described. The other unusual thing is the caboose. Not only is it a caboose but it is a red caboose with a cupola! This I&O branch line ends almost 2 miles south of this crossing. The caboose was used for the long backup moves and was kept on a siding in Mason, Ohio just north of this crossing. This caboose is now owned by a private family and loaned to LM&M Railroad in Lebanon, Ohio. Trains operate on 161.385, 161.430 channel 88 and 161.220. This is in Mason, Ohio at US 42 and Tylersville Rd intersection. I have a playlist below for the Indiana And Ohio Railway ( IORY ). Thanks for watching! Hardly see a Indiana & Ohio on this line it dead ends to a subdivision on the south end, I go up that way to Dixie Union Station once in a while
Years ago I went to the public hearing to extend the railroad and connect it with the other line near Blue Ash. So many ppl showed up to complain about it that my friend decided not to speak. They ruled against allowing the tracks to be reinstalled and reconnected so today they are two different branches
Was the Row sold of just the tracks pulled up?
Interesting. Happy to see a caboose on a train again.
Question: What makes a crossing exempt and why is it exempt? Also exempt from what?
I've never see one of these that I can recall, so very curious as to why they get labeled that way, and what criteria makes them exempt and what are they exempt from?
Exempt means that any vehicle that needs to stop for that crossing doesn't need to. Most go exempt because of little or no rail traffic or very busy roads near intersections.
@@Cozmo2k4 Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense to me now.
At first, I didn't quite understand what was meant by it.
Thanks for clearing that up. Now I know something new. :)
This crossing looks cool, And I never seen a crossing like this before.
Dude that was awesome I almost felt like a Time Warp with that red caboose that was so epic good catch have a great day jaw tooth
Extremely rare for me to see this type of a setup...even a traffic signal type of a system...for the train itself! Fantastic clip!
Sometimes cabooses are used when you have a great deal of shoving (reverse movements) to do; sometimes they are called ‘shoving platforms’. It allows the Conductor/Foreman/Brakeman to comfortably stand looking aft vs hanging off the car. It does require an extra couple moves to place cars because you have to shove past your switch, take it off, pull fwd to place your cars, then come out and reconnect.
Also, a caboose isn’t required anymore due to the EOT and better bearings in the wheels....No “fire watch” required or notification that the train broke apart.
Would give just about any thing to see a caboose on all trains again 😁
No thank you very much! What a pain in the behind they usually are. Always in the way.
@Carl Ferrigno Yeah, if can afford it. You're not related to Big Louie (Ferrigno), are you?
Me too!
@@BNSF1458 You & I have about as much of a chance of seeing the return of the caboose as we have of seeing the price of gas dip below the $1 mark.
@@kevinmiller1985 I know, It's so sad :( (My dream is to videotape a caboose, it will probably never happen thoug :( )
Man...I haven't seen an actual Caboose on a train since the early-mid 80's!
Thanks for sharing this! 👍
It's great to see a caboose. When we were kids, I am 52, it was a highlight to see them. I lived on the the West East line of Union Pacific through the Arkansas River Valley near the switchyards at Van Buren, Arkansas. Kids today don't know about the men that rode back there and their job.
So strange that even SimCity don't allow this
I been going over this crossing for years and never seen how it works. Finally got to see how it works. Thanks for the video
They didn’t run the light because they were allready passed it.
Or very close. Hard to look straight up at a light.
The car behind the van easily could have seen the light. However, the light is so seldom used, I bet no one really pays attention to it.
There is a stop line (shown near the end), it looked they were in front of it.
They still ran the light..
They must have been communist Chinese - red means GO!
Train light turns yellow
Engineer: I ain’t no sunday driver I can make it
*speeding up*
I've driven over that crossing many times. Never knew how it worked. Thanks Jawtooth.
Super Fantastic Video!
Nice video!
Never heard of a crossing like that before, extremely unique, and very interesting. Amazing video thank you.
Thanks for posting.
Man your not kidding, that was a unique crossing, nice out standing video.
I love the intersection railroad crossings
That is a strange crossing! Great work as usual Jawtooth!
That was crazy.....but SUPER COOL at the same time
Supplement : in Rome,NY the train crosses Highway 49 and E Dominick street. Ca. 10(!) lanes, without barriers ! ! Only traffic lights. (and Horn !📢) There is also street running at business park near by Mayberry Road . That does not seem to be in use .
Love your your videos I love trains
Great vid as always! Thanks!
Wow, that is a strange set up. Thanks for posting Brian, stay safe.
That was Awesome.... Never knew those existed... I learned something new... Thanks for sharing ...
Thanks for video!!
Excellent video! I have never seen a crossing like that before. Thanks for capturing and sharing this!
Wow Jawtooth that was totally awesome thanks for sharing this! Never saw a crossing like this before!
thanks for sharing
That was pretty nifty. Thanks for posting!
That was so cool to see the caboose.....wish it would come back ......GREAT CROSSING!!!!!! never seen that before.....excellent find!!!!! Thanks for the great video!!!!
Unique rail crossing and a caboose in active duty. Nice catch.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Awesome! I suggested this one for you a couple weeks ago.
I live right down the street from this one and it's always cool to watch. Even when I'm in a hurry I don't mind seeing it.
Ahh I used to live in a suburb of Cincinnati and have been by this crossing so many times, but never saw a train! Would love to see this in person
Great video and catch
The Navy base I am stationed at has a crossing like that. When the train comes through, twice a day, the base security comes to the crossing because it doesn't have gates. The train has a stop sign and cannot proceed until security is set up to stop traffic and waves the train through. for a while I thought security was there to make sure noone jumped off the train and tried to access the base but I learned that in California exempt crossings require some type of law enforcement for the train to proceed.
That radio antenna you can see in the background has a pretty cool history too.
You bring some really cool train spotting! Thanks 👍
That was great. Don't have anything remotely like that in the UK. Thanks for taking the time to do all these uploads.
Nice to see a caboose.
I miss the old days, when they climbed on the train while it was moving.
just lovely
That was neat.
Wow that is a dot traffic light on the right side of the tracks. Would love to see it go green. They have pre emption of the circuit before to turn that light red, or it all may be in the key switch. A sequence to clear out the cars before the rain goes. Love the caboose. Three boats to start. When standing, back. 🚂🙂
Great catch! Especially only a couple times a week! I like how you pointed out the drivers running the red lights oblivious to everything going on.
What type of business was it serving?
What short line railway was that locomotive?
There's a couple of factories and a lumber yard to the south. That lumber yard must do a decent business, they get several car loads per week. The rail line is former Pennsylvania now operated by G&W owned Indiana and Ohio. For some reason, oblivious drivers are a common sight in that area.
Jason Webster Hi Jason! Thank you for your reply.
Wow, that is a cool crossing, good catch! And that caboose was the icing on the cake
Okay, that is by far the weirdest thing I’ve seen in quite some time!! And the caboose was very cool!!
😍
That’s wild, never seen anything like that either. Thanks for sharing
HOLY CRAP THAT'S AWESOME!!!
Never seen a crossing like that! Much less exempt!
Right next to the 700 WLW Blaw-Knox Antenna! Used to be a 500,000 Watt Flamethrower!!
AND GAS AT $2.29 AT THE UDF!!!
Dang, son, you hit the LIVE ACTION TRIFECTA!!!
Thanks, Jaw Tooth!!!!
I love weird signaling stuff like that! Also neat are tilting targets and smash boards.
Excellent video
Rare to see a caboose still in active service, I spotted a transfer caboose in my small hometown a few weeks ago. Ex central Michigan genesee northern no. 1. It was on the bad axe sub division (also known as huron eastern southern railway or huron eastern) (former Chesapeake and Ohio track)
That is pretty crazy.
There's a yard here that still uses a few cabooses. I've witnessed the engineer on the rear balcony with a remote unit around his neck controlling the engine while doing switching. Was a rather interesting watch while I waited for the crossing to clear.
I have several videos of the same thing with the remote control packs and caboose. Check out some of my caboose videos
Amazing!!
I have literally been around railroading all my life, my father was an engineer too. That is the first and only time I have seen or even heard of RR crossing at grade like this one. It’s also the first one I have seen or heard of the train stopping for the cars. It almost like a manual interlocking with block signals between two railroads.
Yes and I want to go back and film it again soon. It is very interesting
That was interesting. I didn’t think anyone was still using cabooses anymore.
The stranger the crossings, The more i find it amusing! My 🐄🔔 ringing @ 5:36 for the caboose & engine together! Perfect! Thanks for sharing!! 😃👌👍😍
Thanks for the upload. Unusual indeed.
Very neat crossing, thanks for the video.
There's a similar crossing (though without the unique hand-switched traffic lights - it has standard bells and gates) on the Wilmington and Western Railroad, a tourist line in Wilmington. That routinely leads with its caboose because there are no turnarounds on the line - the caboose (also used for party type rentals and weddings) has its own single chime horn and complete set of engine controls on it. Engine leads leaving the station at Greenbank, caboose coming back from Mt. Cuba or Hockessin. It's a small but otherwise fantastic tourist railroad. :)
Most amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice one JT. I do love to see a loco hauled train, particularly when holding up road traffic, but that's just me I guess.
The Monon Railroad in Indiana had crossings similar to this. There would be a traffic light that stayed green if no train was approaching and then they would turn red when a train was near. I'm not sure if CSX kept those signals or not since the line between Mitchell and New Albany was abandoned.
That’s different for sure!
With a caboose no less!
Live Action......and more!
Great video as always!!!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
That was super cool Brian, that red Caboose.thanks for the video. greetz:Peerke.
Pretty cool that had a red caboose tagging along
Thats cool. The town I was born and live in is in the Guinness book of records for making the train obey the traffic signal when it ran thru the center of the street.
Amazing to see !
Wow that was pretty cool..
This is a truly unique crossing and a great video. I didn't notice what causes the highway signals to go back to green, the conductor did not get off to change anything once the train passed the crossing.
Awesome crossing action!! Never saw that before!!!
That is the only crossing like that in Ohio with all those different items combined into one
beautiful ... red cabose !
Wow, that's the first time in a real long time that I have seen a Caboose with the train
Pretty cool setup.
Caboose is privately owned now and just happened to be on the rear of the movement. Likely the last time I&O will use a caboose as this ex NW caboose was the last one on I&O in the Cinncinnati area.
I was a conductor for a bit in Western NC and we had a 5 mile shove that was always on a boxcar... wish they would have kept a caboose for that! Great video - espec enjoyed listening to the conductor counting down cars =)
That's awesome! I always wanted a railroad job. Have a great week!
That was Cool thanks for makin this video
Never heard of an Exempt crossing before. Cool video. I like the orange and black paint scheme on the I&O Locomotives.
Ty
Just awesome and amazing
I tried to film that exempt crossing a couple times recently but nothing came through. I am going to get a new video there soon. I hope lol
I have a RR crossing near my house I moved into recently. It has no signal, only sign. Thought that was pretty cool. But this is something else!
Hey. Love your stuff. Fun. There's another "exempt" crossing in OH. Crossing route 30 inside city limits of Wooster, OH. But, NO cabooses, here!!!
There used to be a railroad crossing like that in Los Banos California. It gone now but you can still see the evidence of where it was. This one in California crossed two highway crossed each other
I live in southwest Ohio and have crossed this crossing several times but never saw a train go across it.
Unrealated fun fact...the radio antenna tower nearby is a Blaw-Knox design, one that isn't seen much these days. It's for WLW, 700 AM, one of the oldest radio stations in America. At one time in the 1930s, it broadcast at 500,000 watts of power, the most power out of any broadcaster, but has stopped a few years later due to interference with other radio stations.
Wow, I was always under the impression this line was abandoned.
WOW Brian never seen one like it either !!!!
We had one on the old Frisco line through Pittsburg, KS after Watco’s SEK started using the line up until about 2000 or so then it was replaced with a proper arm crossing. It was controlled by a track circuit tho
Cool video!!!!
Wow awesome!!
That was just all around awesome.
it’s weird yet really cool how they using a caboose at the end of the train
Strong little caboose :P...I miss them. They've been gone from around here for about 20 years. Just the stupid signal on back. I know its cheaper and easier but I miss the cabooses.
This is awesome and unique usually the engine taking the lead but this classic caboose is running the show
There's one in Winfield PA on US Highway 15 with the North Shore railroad
That very rare with no level crossing gate wow that cool keep up with the best work buddy Cheers:-)
Very nice video plus first time i did saw that railroad crossing on this video!!
Nice video Jawtooth
Wow jaw tooth that is the trippiest railroad crossing I've ever seen in my entire life wow that overhead view shows you how strange the layout is and I've never seen Road lights connected to a railroad that is so bizarre thank you for documenting this for us very interesting railroad crossing thanks for the tangent peace out into the world have a great day
