Unusual Railway Crossing, Traffic Signals Combined With Railway Signals

  • Unusual railroad crossing using traffic signals, gates, lights and bells. CSX main line trains in Columbus Ohio area of Linworth. Dangerous railroad crossing caused by traffic light 700 feet down the road that backs the traffic up. To prevent traffic from stopping on the railroad tracks another traffic light was added just across the tracks with the white stop line just before the tracks. When the traffic signal down the road causes the traffic to back up, sensors in the pavement activate the traffic signal next to the tracks so that cars will stop before the crossing instead of stopping on the tracks. That's the best way that I can explain it. Watch the video closely. Also, when a train is approaching, the traffic signal at the crossing will activate along with the railroad crossing signals. Some people stop past the white line before the crossing ( as you can see for the 2nd train ) which blocks the lane next to the crossing. I also filmed the back side of the traffic signal on the other side of the tracks with a closer view of the traffic signals down the road that cause the backup. This is Linworth, Ohio which is next to Worthington and just north of Columbus. Filmed March 26, 2019. Thanks for watching! Please comment, rate and SUBSCRIBE TO JAWTOOTH!!

    A very busy crossing. I used to live nearby. They discussed for years adding an underpass but with all the local business near the road. Just not enough room. As a side note , there used to be a station as you look to your left. It was turned into a restaurant and even had a couple of dining cars attached. Great place to eat and watch trains go by. If I recall it was called Linworth Junction. Had bands play on Weekends.

    There is a similar set up to this with the traffic light at the tracks to prevent traffic from backing up on the tracks at the Plaza Blvd crossing in Mentor OH that was added last summer.
    That crossing is even more unique because:
    (a) it is set up for crossing 2 railroads -- both the double track CSX main line [the old NY central water level mainline / former Conrail mainline] and a NS mainline [the old Nickel Plate railroad]
    AND
    (b) it is a quite zone [no train horn] crossing.
    I figured they had the traffic light at the crossing for southbound traffic because there is a traffic light at a major intersection at Mentor Ave about a block south of the tracks that could potentially back up traffic to the tracks and there is only space between the CSX tracks and the NS track for maybe 2 cars or 1 tractor trailer. I also have noticed at the crossing that they seem to have an inferred sensor across the roadway between the the 2 railroads to detect vehicles stopped on that portion of roadway in the crossing, which I suspect will slightly delay the closing of the gates between the 2 railroads to give a vehicle a few more seconds to cross and get out of the middle between the 2 railroads.

    We have similar setups in Wallingford Connecticut yet people continually stop on the tracks regardless and wait for the light. Then everybody goes into a panic because they can't believe that the gates are coming down while they are stopped on the tracks in traffic!! Happens a couple of times a week and I just sit back and watch.
    Be safe out there my friends

      Same. The huge loud airhorn LONG LONG SHORT LONG pattern at every crossing feels excessive to me, but it's shown over and over again that they're needed in the US to remind people to pay attention to their surroundings at risk of death.

      The lights work together so when the light across the tracks is green the light at the tracks is red. When the track light is green the one across the track is green that way there’s no backs ups over the tracks. When the light across the tracks is red the light at the tracks is probably red too but after couple seconds

    There are several train crossings like this in my town because a railroad cuts right though several downtown streets. All the lights are synched to each other so that traffic doesn't back up onto the tracks, and it works really well. As far as I know, no one has been hit by a train on that railroad in the 26 years I have lived here.

    That traffic light is a good solution. There is a grade crossing in Burbank, CA that is very busy with cars and trains. It's next to to major intersections. I can't remember how many times that the crossing has been changed but every year at least 2 or 3 cars and/or trucks get hit. The solution you showed here I think would be a better solution than anything that has been tried before.

    • @jovetj
      @jovetj 5 років тому +1

      It doesn't really help, as you're describing this very-American traffic signal as European. It isn't European at all; European signals may have some similarities, but that does not make this signal European or British.
      Almost all traffic signals in the US have red-amber-green aspects (there are now exceptions), and many of them have rectangular backgrounds, especially those mounted on a cantilever. The only thing unusual about this traffic signal's appearance is the retroreflective fluorescent yellow stripe around the edge of its background. That isn't common in the US at all. And, of course, this signal's placement and operation guarding against queuing vehicles and the railroad crossing intersection itself is rather unusual, especially given its distance from the controlled vehicular intersection.

      @@jovetj _ that`s what makes it cool rare to see it with yellow border stating the danger of that area, IE: common this side of pond black back plate with white border to show lights better. yellow reflective border states extreme danger as JW`s vid shows and like you say rare in US, only other place i seen it in US is in Chicago abate that was 12 yrs ago. As they say what works for some wont work for others or is adapted, that`s the beauty of life you never know whats around the corner and never expect something you dont normally see for that area. Anyway be safe & good and if you cant be good........ be very naughty :-)

I love this one a lot because it has perfect view of the signals! When we come here I usually stay in front by the little market when trains pass. The traffic light and sign are a big help for the traffic. My one complaint is that I wish that that Safetran Type 2 E-Bell was louder, it’s pretty quiet. There was a train derailment at that crossing in June 2009 that caused the state of Ohio's transpartation department to install that light with CSX. If I remember correctly, a flatbed semi got caught on the tracks and couldn't move in time before being struck. The train hit the trailer part of the truck and several cars left the tracks. Good news is the driver of the truck wasn't injured.

    Colorado does this frequently at intersections but with a catch. The mastarm signal is in front of the crossings then theres the intersection signal with another mast arm with special (and very expensive) signal heads where the lights can only be seen whilst crossing the tracks. Plus the signals have preemptive measures to clear the tracks before the gates go down. I work with traffic lights and this is very common in colorado with the added addition of the blank out signs. Very nice catch. You would love the ones out here.

    Neat railroad crossing but it’s pretty sad when people are morons when it comes to train safety. I still look both ways even with crossing gates because you never know what’s coming and of course the gates are mechanical they could not work at any time.

    • @Erzahler
      @Erzahler 5 років тому

      I also slow down (or stop if the crossing is at an intersection) and look both ways for a train, for the very reason you stated. Sometimes I'll get a honk behind me from some ignorant driver, but I really don't care what they think. As a conscientious Railfan, safety comes first for me. I'd rather stop and be safe than be careless and risk a possible incident.
      Ignorant drivers, of course, don't believe in safety first. They practice "safety last!"
      Regarding your special traffic signal... in Florida, they are not so unusual. The Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) has negotiated with all of the city and county departments of transportation to coordinate all of the highway traffic signals along its route paralleling the highways US-1 and A1A. When a train occupies a crossing with a traffic light, the light stays red for crossing traffic and stays green for traffic on the parallel highway. At some of the crossings, the left-turn signal might activate for motorists turning left away from the railroad if the crossing is occupied (this varies from city to city). After the crossings gates are deactivated, the highway traffic signal immediately cycles through its normal signal pattern. It is actually a big help for Railfans chasing FEC trains.

    Hey Jaw Tooth, are the higher sided open top cars (many different ones on first train) still considered or called gondola cars such as the older lower sided ones that I have seen for years? Or do they now have a new name or classification? Thanks again. And a great life saving design on those lights! And a great catch by you to notice and bring this to us! It's the first I have seen of something like it, although it hopefully will be utilized more often. With you bringing this forward as you have maybe somewhere else in the country an accident will occur and in the investigation of it and follow up recommendations maybe some county board or committee member who by chance happen to look up your video will come forward and say Hey there is a better way of making this crossing intersection safer as I have seen a video of something like this before. So once again in the making of your great and getting better all the time videos, you brought us something you noticed as rather unique and it just may help save someone's life or serious accident from occurring somewhere in the future!

    A question for somebody who knows about trains more than I do, lol! Why do the bells on some railroad crossings continue to chime for the duration of the train passing and others, like this, only chime when the gates come down?
    I personally enjoy the bells so I like it when they continue to chime throughout. That's basically the case for all of them that I've encountered here in southeastern Washington state where I live.
    Thanks!

      It's just the whim of the railroad, the locale, or the installer as to how to wire it. It tends to be standardized in geographic chunks of a given railroad, but it isn't always consistent.
      I'm sure some areas only have the bells ring when the gates descend (and, possibly, when they ascend, too) where crossings may be close to residences and the noise may be considered annoying.
      Like you, all of the crossings near me always ring throughout. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever seen a crossing in person that doesn't...

    The traffic lights are synchronized with the crossing when the gates activate the traffic lights turn red

    We’ve got a major intersection near an interstate and highway 1 in Louisiana that has a traffic signal immediately after a Union Pacific mainline. Not HUGE traffic but it is a 4 lane meeting a four lane, near the interstate, near the airport. But that’s Louisiana for ya.

    on State Route 140 in Windsor Locks Connecticut there is a railroad crossing that has the traffic lights and the crossing lights coordinated that handles the traffic pretty well it's a fairly heavily used roads secondary road but it's quite a setup they have

    We had traffic lights like this at our crossings( some that is) . But they had 2 red lights per signal ..top and bottom and would flash yellow when no trains were coming.

    I like the notion of combining the road traffic lights with the timing of the activation of the railroad crossing lights.
    Most road drivers have an ancient habit of beating the trains to crossings or going around rail crossing barriers, so it should be federal law by US government that . . . .
    (A) 1.: all railroad crossings be included with highway/road traffic lights ON BOTH SIDES OF RAILROAD CROSSINGS per road crossing traffic lanes,
    (A) 2.: all railroad crossing gate barrier arms be doubled per each side of the railroad / road crossings,
    &
    (B) the highway/road traffic lights be timed with the activation of the railroad crossing lights.
    People have a habit of going around rail crossing barriers but obey highway/road traffic lights.
    In this way: every person @ & near all railroad crossings will be much safer.
    I think this makes a lot of sense & common logic when u stop, & think about it.

      This seems to be a global problem. Most people will obey a red traffic light, even when there's clearly no other traffic around to wait for. Yet at a rail crossing, with flashing red lights, bells and even barriers and a train in sight, they'll risk their life - and the lives of others - and cross anyway.

    • @jovetj
      @jovetj 5 років тому

      No, that's a bad idea. Won't solve anything, people disobey traffic lights a lot more than they do RR crossing signals. RR signals provide more "on pain of death" warning. And #2 is too expensive to implement.
      Makes much more sense to imprint onto drivers what they should be doing around railroad tracks, and the consequences if they don't.

    Hi, two nice long trains and trucks. That is an usual lighting configuration but I guess they cannot do anything about the lower lights as they must be at a junction of a main highway, and as you say cannot back up over the tracks!!!
    Where do you find all these strange things that go on with your railways and how do you know when non passenger trains are going to be coming along?
    Until the next time, Martin🇬🇧

    • @jovetj

      Unusual lighting condition? How so? Can't do anything about the lower lights? What lower lights? I don't understand what you're talking about.
