- Railroad Diamond in middle of 4 lane highway! Weird & Unusual Train Stuff! 2 CSX mainlines cross at grade at an unusual level railroad crossing in the Florida Bone Valley. A huge phosphate freight train and a stinky molten sulpher train are seen crossing the diamond and busy roadway in Mulberry, Florida on February 1, 2020. We flew to Tampa just to film this unusual crossing and to film the FEC Railroad and trains around the Tampa and Plant City areas. We stayed at the Best Western motel on Highway 60 in Mulberry to view the phosphate trains. Only a few trains a day go on the east and west route across Florida here but there are a bunch of them on the north south line. We filmed trains including Amtrak at 3 different railroad diamonds in central Florida so make sure you don't miss my other videos. Obviously this isn't a "no horn" zone! He was really leaning on it.
He's not allowed to stop blowing the horn until the head locomotive is clear of the last grade crossing. You can see there's one more street to cross right as he finishes up.

Any railfan drivers at the crossing were probably delighted to see and hear the long train crossing the diamond. That is a rare diamond location. There used to be a middle-of-the-street diamond in the Westport section of Baltimore many years ago. The double tracked mainline of the Western Maryland Railway coming out of Port Covington crossed a B&O industrial track in the middle of Kloman St. Movements on the B&O Kloman St. spur were controlled by WM-style block signals mounted on the street edge each side of the WM tracks. I rode WM excursion trains across the diamond but never caught any switching activities on the B&O spur. That whole area changed when the WM yard was torn up after being absorbed into CSX, the old B&O industrial track was removed, and the Baltimore Light Rail line running to Glen Burnie was built where Kloman St. used to be.
Nice and loud in the middle of the nite too I'll bet!!! lol
MrJawtooth, if that sulfur train smelled that bad just rolling by, just imagine what the gals n guys that load that stuff go through. No I must say I haven't seen a diamond in the middle of the street, but how cool was that. Great video. I have smelled a hot asphalt train, that was bad enough.

That is so cool! I've never seen anything like it before. That's a long, loud, slow train, and I loved every minute of it!
The sound of those bogies hitting the diamond carries for miles. When I was a kid in East London you could hear wagons being shunted at Temple Mills marshalling yard for miles.(lot less traffic noise in those days) Love that noise.

Been there several times, I recommend Carter's Barbeque north of the diamond to Canal Street and go east (turn right) Carter's Barbeque is on the right almost a half mile.
Griffith, Ind had them literally in the pavement!!!! The EL crossed the GTW and EJE there.

Just imagine if a train would suddenly derail on that diamond. That would be one hell of a mess.

Certainly has some old vet cars on that first train. Noticed a couple had old Penn Central green, which would make them 40 years old probably older.

Florida is an awesome place for train watching. I used to visit there and spent many days surfing Sebastian inlet and watching FEC trains.

That's my first time seeing that kind of track, great video
One thing I noticed, the crossing gate bell clanged away only when the gate was going down. In some places the bell clangs for the full duration of the gate being down.
That’s pretty common on CSX and Norfolk southern.
Wow replacing that diamond would be a major project with it being in the road like that. Excellent video JT👍🏼😎

I used to have an Aurora Car layout with Atlas HO trains. Aurora offered road / rail crossings and the Gomez Adams crashes sometimes happened. Imagine trying to model this intersection ? Wow great video !

That's very interesting. I never realized until I saw this video that there was such a big phosphate industry in Florida. When I was a big, burly truck driver (well, not so burly!) I used to go to a Cargil Plant in Tampa (according to what I can find, it's now The Mosaic Company) and pick up loads of fertalizer-type bags and take it to Laredo, TX. It was a good, easy, long run (nice when you get paid by the mile). So I learned something today. I thought FL was just a sand bar until today. :)
According to the reporting marks in Wikipedia, CPDX is Chevron. It doesn't list a SUJX - Greg in TN

Wish I had known about this when I was in Lakeland 2 years ago, I would have made a side trip.

I work for UP (Chicago Service Unit ) as a conductor...i had to be a road conductor for a few days and i had to go to Clinton,Ia. How we know we're in Clinton? The soybean plant and corn processing plant. It smells like 52 butt cracks with the fan on.😂😂😂😂

There are phosphate trains that come from CSX that run on the BNSF sub in my area. Just got one a week or 2 ago. Kind of sad seeing the fallen flag hoppers rusting away, CNW, Rock Island, Milwaukee Road, Rio Grande, etc. Some of the CP potash trains have the older hoppers like the first train.
Once again, Jawtooth adds to his miscellany of street running trains with a diamond in the median.
