I don’t see it catching on as all the major manufacturers have so much R&D $$$$ invested into their battery technology, they’ll want to protect that, along with their IP.

Thank you for this video. This affirms my belief that NIO will go bankrupt if they continue with the battery swap services. Please understand that I am not saying that battery swapping is a bad thing for the consumers. What I am saying is that battery swapping is not long term financially competitive nor sustainable for the company itself. These giant automated stations have a high initial cost and will require more and more maintenance as time goes on. Cars will drop all kinds of road crud into the mechanics of the swap mechanisms and each station will need to be constantly manned by an attendant in case things go wrong. Over time, this service will be deemed to be financially uncompetitive with the DC fast charge options. I can only see this benefiting the ultra rich and fleet (taxi) services in the future, because when the true long term cost of the swap station is finally determined, only they will be able to justify the price.
Do you know that version 2.0 can do up to 300 swaps per day ? Do you realize what kind of revenue that can bring ? It’s much cheaper than buying premium real estate inside big cities and having many cars sit a long time while their batteries charge. This model will work inside China and large urban areas.
Almost all the Tesla Charging station that I have used (Super Charger) there were at least 1 out of service charging port per station here in the US. I am mostly using them between LA and Vegas so their usage is high, the business model of selling electricity is still sounded. For Nio, the swap stations is a sounded business plan because the lease out their battery at a monthly subscription. It only make sense when you think about Big Cities where not everyone has their own parking for charging.
@@youngien The business of swapping out batteries is not sound. It is much more expensive for the company, than what they are telling you. NIO will go bankrupt with this idea. It looks really good to the consumers. It is affordable, and fast. But NIO and anyone else who follows this scheme will eventually go bankrupt because they are covering up the true expense of maintaining the swap station, the attendant, and the batteries by subsidizing the cost to the consumers. If all the people in a city, who don't have a place to park for charging were to use swap stations then how many swap stations and spare batteries do you think NIO will need?.....and every one of these stations is loosing money with no hope of recovering the cost. Great practical demonstration. I love NIO because of battery swap, as this gives NIOs the most important value retention advantage over other makes. However you have shown the weak link in the current process which will be compounded when they introduce more battery capacity options. Even with the introduction of swap station 2, having 13 available batteries, this will still be a problem. NIO must address this ASAP. Two factors that in my view would help, is one to redesign the changing process to avoid turning the battery through 90 degrees when swapping and two, make the stations drive through. However I think the game changer will be when new generation batteries become available that can fully charge in minutes.
Just an obvious thing to comment out (2:03), but wouldn't it speed up the process if NIO cars can enter like a drive-through car wash with both front and back ramp, rather than reversing back?
Yes but I think the issue is probably that most places won't have space for that kind of set up, they cut down on the variables and complexity and cost by having one size fits all locations kind of set up.
I don't think this swapping system will workout in the long run. You'd get the same problem as there was in this video, too many batteries for the station to swap and store/charge. Batteries are getting better and better, can be charged faster and faster and have a longer battery life. The amount of places to charge your car will increase faster as well, it's easier to place a couple of chargers at a parking spot than it is to place a swapping station. Another disadvantage of a swapping station is that it is limited to one brand. Imagine having Shell or BP gas station for mercedes only. You would need a lot of gas stations on the highway to provide all brands of brand exclusive gas. I saw one person in the comments saying to replace the gass stations with swapping stations just ain't going to work. If all brands are doing the swap thing, you'd have so many swapping stations all over the place, it's not going to work. Charging is the way to go, it's pretty easy to place one, compared to a swapping station or gas station.
Actually, with better battery, normal charging station would still see risk from obsolete. However, with City user case, where not all car owners has garage, battery swap is a soultion for today and the near future.
Worth to mention you can actually don’t own batter pack with Nio. Just, rent it. This makes the batter exchange more suitable and comfortable. And the car is said to be able to drive in-out the station automatically.
The biggest problem with NIO is the infrastructure. What will come first Super fast charging or millions of battery swap stations worldwide? It's a race against the clock in the end I think only one will prevail. NIO is a cool car and I'm glad to see new EV brands on the road for sure.
Well, had you bought a Tesla, do you think either company has an advantage with respects to where and how fast each company's charging station compares?
Not sure, but NIO starts to sell their automotive in Sep in Norway and allows customers to order online in July. They use Norway as an outpost to expand the selling network in Europe, so it will probably soon be promoted in Germany.

if you have to wait longer to swap than to charge to 80%, that defeats the purpose of having swap. I'm much more concerned about how many swapping stations they have along well-traveled highways. either way, I think BaaS is an excellent idea. if they have enough spares on hand, they don't have to supercharge batteries which are not great for long term battery life. BTW, the EC6 looks amazing.
I wonder what happens in the future when you have a new/good battery (brand new car), receive an "old/ bad one" during a swap, but drive with it for weeks/months by charging it at home and want to switch it for another battery later on at one of these stations. Normally the owner of the car will be accountable (turning up for the costs of "broken parts" of their car). What if, at some point they refuse to take in a very old battery that you personally only had for a couple weeks/months and received from a station (perhaps from another one hundreds of miles away)?
Wow, that’s a lot of demand. Lots of NIOs just in one station. Hopefully they bring many new battery swap stations in the next few years to supply the demand! ..Holding 1400 shares of NIO. :)
Engineering marvel even as 1.0. I mean, compare this sophistication vs. stinky fingers (gas always spills at your local pump - don't pretend it's not true). Give me some Nio. Each day and every day. Twice on Sunday. Respect.
Coming from a shareholder idk if what I saw was a good or bad thing. The process looks inefficient but there was a long line of Nio’s waiting to be serviced. 🤷🏻♂️
This is awesome and an obvious option to pursue. We swap out batteries on our devices all the time because that's faster than recharging. I see this working out, especially if the process is made faster and operations reach economy of scale. It's great to see trials like these going on. Question though, do you know how they handle warranties? If you're swapping out the original battery, the most costly part of the car, for an unknown one, what happens if there are problems? I'm assuming these are all currently Nio owned operations, specific to certain models and trims, and that issues would be covered under the standard warranty for now. Eventually, with growth, that might not be the case. Potential legal hurdle to overcome. For this to be most successful, stations would need to carry batteries for many brands and models, which would incur a lot of overhead. Else, people will be limited to their specific brand swap stations, which is less idea. Obviously a major advantage to gas stations is that they are universal. This is an argument in favor of improved universal charging stations. Now, if batteries were ever standardized across brands, this would be a major win. I don't see that happening anytime soon, but who knows.
Battery is rented for most nio customers so we don't really need to worry about that, it's not ours anyway. You are right about it hardly being likely there will be a universal standard with regards to batteries... for now its just nio that can swap here.
I like the video! I love the on the ground information. Do you see a lot of Nio's around outside of the charging station? Are you noticing an increase from last year?
@@hgr3180 the alternative would be investing in charging stations. It's harder (not saying impossible) to scale swapping stations because of the capital needed, the extra batteries that need to be produced, the labour cost for swap station attendants, and finding good locations for the swap stations.
@@garykubiak This is just an option. As battery tech improves you might want to swap to upgrade your battery instead of buying a new car. Nio can use superchargers as well. I see other EV startups and legacy automakers using this technology so I don't think money will be a problem. There will be battery innovation along the way and you won't have to worry about the scarcity of batteries.
I think tesla approach is better than battery swap cuz u can charge cars simultaniously compare it waiting in line to swap ur battery with one station.
Some countries are much further along than us Americans 😅 the other advantage of battery swap though is you don’t have to buy the battery of course, cheaper car supposedly
Waiting time is another issue, but for 1 to 1 comparison, we should compare swap time vs charge time, to be fair, coz for charging, if the stalls are full, you need to wait as well
True , but the partnership with sinopec is to build 5000 swap stations by 2025. so it should ease the wait if any by then along with all the other charge and super charge stations to be built.
The 2.0 stations are faster and I’m sure the tech will only improve, same as charging tech will also improve. Convenient though... I’m on my road trip currently and just stopped at a highway rest station and swapped my battery, went from 38km range to 550km range in 5 minutes and was back on the road. Not all of the swaps have been that convenient but the one I did now definitely beats charging imo.

They could improve on their app to show you a live stock of their available batteries. What happens if they can't swap? Cool system though 😁👍🏻 we deliver a lot of screws to them, their Business is bustling.
6:27 love the little hat on the roboat.
I wonder if this is like the California of NIO, In Los Angeles there are lines for superchargers but everywhere else in the country there is no line. Please update us on battery swap stations across China.
Will do. Once I'm on the road :D
I’m nio owner in Kunming, which is south western inner China,in my city there is almost no waiting time for swap except public holidays. And the Nio guy said they will open two more swap stations for the city this year.
Nice. Never saw a nio in Kunming, but I’ll probably see you on the road when I hit kunming on my road trip. Kunming is the best! Go to salvadores if you haven’t yet lol
@@Eric_Garrison Lol,I like their tacos. BTW I also live in Dali, message me if you come:) Charge point provided!
@@estrella6644 sure thing! Trip around erhai sounds perfect. And a charge point too lol. Feel free add my wechat (15502132233) or on nio app (穿越中国Eric)
I love NIO so much when will they come to the US?
When nio defeated Tesla 😂
Who can tell if US goverment not gonna ban NIO like huawei and tiktok
Chinese company hate to invest in USA due to the uncredited government. they like use big stick of ban on the head of them
if you have to wait longer to swap than to charge to 80%, that defeats the purpose of having swap. I'm much more concerned about how many swapping stations they have along well-traveled highways. either way, I think BaaS is an excellent idea. if they have enough spares on hand, they don't have to supercharge batteries which are not great for long term battery life. BTW, the EC6 looks amazing.
And I see myself taking a bad battery switch in for a better one🤣🤣🤣
If they can get the wait time down to 5-10 mins then i think this could be a better alternative to having to charge all the way up.
A fully charged battery takes a very long time.
because it is free which gonna be costly
to the company
@@chickenchopfriedrice the service, not the battery and subscriptions. They are costumer service experience focus, is brilliant
@@m0nsant0 costly. not gonna profit within 2 years
@@chickenchopfriedrice 2 years? Awesome!!
Nio EV car has lots of great ideas
I like the video! I love the on the ground information. Do you see a lot of Nio's around outside of the charging station? Are you noticing an increase from last year?
Without wait time, I'm sure you would have been in and out in 5 minutes.
That's true for all things :P
That's why this wont SCALE...
@@cybertrk yeah I think if this was a good idea tesla would have already done it elon even mentioned it when he was at a conference
I think tesla approach is better than battery swap cuz u can charge cars simultaniously compare it waiting in line to swap ur battery with one station.
I hope the car would just find its way and park itself inside the swapping station, that'd be awesome
There are new swapping stations v2.0 supporting auto parking into the station.
Will it be easier if they just drive through instead of backing up
Once NIO roll out the gen2 battery swaps, it should be better.
How much does this cost to change as against recharging ??
Not bad for the first time swap being it on 1.0 version
Renault Alliance (3rd biggest car makers worldwide) is also considering battery swapping for its EV...
They look dope💥
Interesting battery changing way~
Overall would you recommended buying a Nio? What’s score would you give it out of 10?
Thank you for showing this, are you in Shenzhen?
Thanks for sharing! How often do you use this service?
6x per month "free"
LIT BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Luv those nio but I understand is the geely swapping stations do it in 1 minute or is it 2 but love this idea
Lovely NIO!
When is this coming to the USA?
Here in the Netherlands we have ‘Fastnet’, you can charge a 300 km range in just 15 minutes. Beats waiting on battery?
Some countries are much further along than us Americans 😅 the other advantage of battery swap though is you don’t have to buy the battery of course, cheaper car supposedly
Waiting time is another issue, but for 1 to 1 comparison, we should compare swap time vs charge time, to be fair, coz for charging, if the stalls are full, you need to wait as well
True , but the partnership with sinopec is to build 5000 swap stations by 2025. so it should ease the wait if any by then along with all the other charge and super charge stations to be built.
the swap is made always with help with nio staff?
Thank you for the VID, 73 N2WB GO NIO
Thank you. Your video just proved that battery swap is stupid. More superchargers and everything is solved. :)
Thank you 👍👍👍
Thank you for doing this video.
So what takes the longest? Are they doing something special to the battery like preconditioning before they put it in your car?
i hope Nio comes to my country asap. but it seems that is not the case.
This is legit, also in a way that it is fun. Would very likely to get an Nio if family is getting another EV, if it is available in Taiwan that is...
Supercharging seems to be more convienient and eben faster in the end. Battery swapping is a Dead end street...
The 2.0 stations are faster and I’m sure the tech will only improve, same as charging tech will also improve. Convenient though... I’m on my road trip currently and just stopped at a highway rest station and swapped my battery, went from 38km range to 550km range in 5 minutes and was back on the road. Not all of the swaps have been that convenient but the one I did now definitely beats charging imo.
do they have a lounge? What's going on inside?
