  • My first time visiting the newer second generation NIO Battery Swap. I really like how easy it was, just pull up, push the button, and the car takes over. However it really wasn't much faster, if at all, than version 1.0. Still it does have some benefits which I describe in the video.

      Compared to a let's say V3 Tesla where you can have 40 cars simultaneously charging no longer than 20-25 vs 15 minutes in the future, this is not a huge improvement. Especially since they can only swap 1 car at a time and can have max 13 cars swapped. This will flop.

    More or less the same time as refueling the car. On my SUV, the gas tank capacity is 18gallons. Most pumps out here have a flow rate of about 5-8 gallons per minute so pumping gas takes about 3 minutes. Add parking, aligning car, swiping credit card and etc, it will take about 5 minutes in total.

    Notice you pulled forward to position the vehicle? A pull though or back-in station design wouldn't be different since the sensors only care the vehicle is on the pads, therefore it must be a footprint issue since a pull though location would obviously use much more. In urban areas real-estate is at a premium price.

      @rogerstarkey5390 2 роки тому

      @@yangtaotai
      312 ÷ 25 hrs = 13 packs/ charges per hour.
      IF it's the same pack size for all 13 that's 1 spare and a 5 minute swap.
      After the 1st hour, they would be essentially charging at full pace for the 13 packs in the bay to 100% all day.l to keep up.
      However.
      If more than 1 car arrives, that's a 5 minute wait (up to 10) to start.
      2 cars, 10-15 minutes.
      3, 15-20..... etc.
      Or, if there are 2 types of pack (Nio now has 3?)
      Then, assuming they have 6 of each plus 1 spare, as the day goes on, when it's busy, the wait time will be increased to the number of cars in front x their swap time, plus possibly 30 minutes if you time it wrong, compounded on the bigger batteries.
      Drivers won't use the "splash and dash, 15 minutes for 50% or more" method as they do with chargers, they'll want a full pack.
      It's going to get messy.

    In that time, I could get about 90 miles on my Tesla charging at V3 Supercharger from 20% SOC. 5 more minutes of charging would get me about 70 miles more, so at 10 minutes, I get about 160 miles which is plenty for me.
    Do you ever have to wait for other cars to swap their batteries out or do you only come in at your reserved time? With more Nios around, the probability of you having to wait for another car increases logarithmically.

      They are in the process of scaling now, will see how it plays out. If there is a queue and you don’t want to wait you can still charge the car. Most swap stations also have charging piles nearby.

      Exactly no way does this scale up. Cool idea for a boutique manufacturer of 50-100k unit's a year in total production.
      Otherwise building them out, staffing them, and supplying 10+pack's to each station. Represents an insane amount of costs.

  • @Knightfire66
    @Knightfire66 2 роки тому

    yes with 50-100 miles TODAY its no difference. both would take around 10min. but whats with 1000miles in 10years? super charging has its limits due to hot wires and battary. swapping does not have a limit.
    v3 or v4 will get even faster maybe 3min for a swap in 5-10 years. and doesnt matter if 100 miles battary or 1000 miles. it will always be 3min. even if you have to wait for 2-3 people.
    9min still faster then a hypothetically super charging a 1000 miles battary. today a hypothetical 1000 miles battary would be around 200 kw. it would take 2-3h with a super charger.
    lets assume you have to drive from Cal. to NY. have fun stopping every 300 miles for 30min. with a larger battary with 1000 miles you would have to stop for 2-3h for 100% charge. with swapping it would take 3min for even a 200kw/1000miles battary.
    maybe in 10 years itll excist. we dont know. super charging is good but for longer distances on highways you need swapping. so it should be an option. maybe on important highways at least.
    it works when governement makes a battary size standard. like gpu, ssd or ram on a pc. if we have industry standards then many companies could use those swap stations. and every body who uses those has to pay a monthly fee.
    There not many people who drive long distances. there not even many routes where you would need more then 1000 miles. LA to NY, NY to miami, paris to athen, berlin to istanbul, shanghai to shenzen, pekin to wuhan.
    Maybe we dont need it and tesla manages to make a 1000 miles battary with recharging 500 miles in 20 min. maybe in 10 years. because I dont think that we need a better battary then 1000 miles. for even 1% of people who drive long distances.
    1000 miles and recharging 500 miles in 20min would be enough. that would mean 1500 miles with a 20min stop. thats nearly LA to Houston. 2 more stops for 20min and youre nearly at DC.
    thats way more then paris to athens or Berlin to Istanbul or Pekin to Shenzen. how many people drive from paris to athens? LA to newyork is the longest distance I could imagine someone driving. those are maybe 10 people a year.
    so swapping is not worth it. you dont need it. unless we dump planes and maglev trains in the trash can and everyone drives with a car from europe to asia XD only and only then 2000 miles battary and 3min swapping would be worth it.
    but I dont think that chinease people would stop using maglev trains and instantly start driving by car from one side of the country to the other. or american stop using planes and going by car.
