- This antique sofa makeover is epic! I take you step by step on how to paint an old antique sofa. The shocking but gorgeous makeover transforms an old sofa that had seen better days. I love this! Turned out great and you did an amazing job!! I have a very similar little settee that I’ve been meaning to apply this kind of technique to….must be a reason you popped up in my feed🤣 I’m planning to do mine in Annie Sloan’s ‘Amsterdam Green’. The wood trim is a dark mahogany stain now so I think this colour combo will look cool together. Thanks for the inspiration girl!! 👏🏻🫶🏻💃🏼
Thank you! And you're welcome. I painted a chair with Amsterdam green. It's a gorgeous color. Your settee will turn out beautifully. Happy painting!
Across your channel this morning and I must say I live your home. I subscribed so I can continue to watch for your tips

Thank you! It is quite the transformation. I'd love to hear how yours turns out.
Amazing!
I love it
Thanks so much!
It’s gorgeous!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Love it!!!!
Thanks!
I liked the natural wood as it was. There's not enough contrast between the white wood and the painted fabric. The sofa is in very good condition.
Thank you. When I originally bought it there were extreme wood damage from being stored in a garage. Owner said it was moved around a lot & never used. If the wood was in good condition I would of never painted it. It's a beauty! I love it in my home.
Beautiful!
Thank you!!
It turned out beautiful , Great Job !!!
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you! A great talking piece when guests come over.
Beautiful 😮
Thank you!
Beautiful:)
I would have NEVER painted that gorgeous sofa. But, to each his own.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It is to this day my favorite DIY. It looks gorgeous in my home. I knew it'd be hard for some.
The sofa looks beautiful ❤
Thank you. It's a show stopper.
It's absolutely beautiful 😍
Thank you! We enjoy it.
Lovely job! I love this and prefer this look over dark wood any day… still looks antique but better 😊
Thank you! I love it, too! My favorite place to hang out!
My friend who owns an antique shop watched your video and said that after painting the wood the sofa value dropped from around $1,500 to around $100. Of course, you own the sofa and can enjoy it however you wish.
Oh my gosh! Did not know it was worth that. Yes, I do enjoy it. Thanks for letting me know. That will be an interesting talking point when having guests over.
Sometimes we misplace “ value”…
Maybe in the “antique” world it lost value but what you did with that sofa added value in my opinion😊! I’m sure there are lots of folks out there that would easily pay over $1,500 (Ijs)😉
She got it for 50 dollars, your friend from the Antique should be shopping more and watching less videos
@@RKbyDesign Thank you. There is a shop where I buy Annie Sloan chalk paint, and the owner paints furniture all the time with chalk paint and gets a good amount for them. There are beautiful painted antiques out there for sure.
Feel sorry for the antique sofa😢
You're brave :)
I'm going to be brave too... I have a ball and claw set I'm going to do this to. Absolutely stunning! I love it!
Thank you! I have detailed directions on my website at victorianlanefarms.com if you need help to do your project. Just search sofa and it'll come up. What an awesome project you have. Sounds amazing!
@@victorianlanefarms thank you so much, I will look it up!
Getting that sofa for 50 bucks!❤😊♥️
I know! I still pinch myself cause the antique sofa is a show stopper.

I want to paint my pram white from light grey but I don’t know if it’s a good idea? I’ve painted many prams and strollers but always black or in another dark color and with amazing results. But is it possible to paint a light gray pram white? I know that the fabric is good for painting but I’m not sure if the white would cover it completely. Any advice?
If you use Annie Sloan paint it'll work to cover the grey. Here is a chair I painted with a busy design to a light grey. victorianlanefarms.com/how-to-paint-a-fabric-chair/
It turned out amazing. So, I think it'll work. The link I'm sharing is a step by step tutorial. Great question.
I painted aneat old chair thats turfted. Its si scratchy i cant sit in it .. but didn't use Ann Sloan or water bittle ...do u think any hope for it help!?
Annie Sloan paint is so forgiving. Sanding it down (lightly) and reapplying another coat, letting that dry, then sanding it again could work. Finish with sealing it with Annie Sloan's clear wax. (I sent you a link to a tufted chair tutorial in another comment) I hope this rescues your chair. Thanks for watching.
It looks fantastic i just painted a fabric chair and will have a video posted soon!!! I learned so much!!
Thank you so much! So glad my video helped you! I'd love to see it!
@@victorianlanefarms i put a furniture transfer on mine and the best way to Not put it on hahaha
@@thekraftycreech Isn't that the way DIYs go, sometimes? It's so disappointing but boy, it sure makes next time easier. I so get that.
@@victorianlanefarms you are so right!!! i was able to make my whole project work which I was happy about. you think you do enough research then find things go wrong anyway. Every single project comes with its own challenges. nothing is ever cookie cutter that is one thing I have learn from flipping for the past 9 years.
after I paint my first coat on the couch do I have to let it dry before painting the second coat ?
Good question. Yes, you need to let the paint dry before you apply another coat. I'd love to hear how yours turns out. It's addicting once you get the hang of how to do it! Thanks for your question.
We just picked up the twin to this couch at a rummage sale. It's not as clean as yours but we have hopes! Thanks for posting this video. It's very inspirational. Also, how much paint did you end up using?
Yay! It's been a great sofa. I'm so glad you have one, too! It took 1 1/2 cans of Annie Sloane paint. When adding water to the paint it makes it stretch & not have to use so much. If you can, I'd love for you to share a photo when you're done. Happy painting!
Ok now Saw rest of video. Sand paper
Yes, sandpaper smooths the crunchy paint. And sealing it with clear wax from Annie Sloan gives it a soft feel. Here is a video where I show how to paint a tufted chair. ua-cam.com/video/4XXlV-ZSiA4/v-deo.html
Did you wipe it down after you put the wax?
Yes. This is an important step to clean off any extra dust after sanding. Good question. Thanks for watching!
@@victorianlanefarms Thank you for your quick reply:) and thank you for the tutorial
I'm confused. You said "half paint and half water," yet you put in 1-1/2 cups water to 3 cups paint. Did you mean put in half as much water as you have paint?
It's 1 to 1. One cup of paint added to one cup of water, for example, is what I learned from a paint store. I think I didn't add as much water. Here's a video where Annie Sloan shares how she paints upholstery : ua-cam.com/video/dokptJLSu3c/v-deo.html , it's very informative & has inspired me to do it different next time. Great question.
What is the right fabrics
Any smooth fabric will work. I found a treasure recently where Annie Sloan shares information about painting upholstery here: ua-cam.com/video/dokptJLSu3c/v-deo.html . She mentions velvet and other textures of fabric. I hope this video helps.
My favorite colors! Great job.
Thank you. The colors turned out beautifully. Loving it!
Did you put a gray layer on later? Because it looks more gray than at first. Unless it dries darker than when it is wet?
I used the diluted Paris Grey and Old White together. It does look darker now that it is dry. I expected it to be lighter. Thanks for watching!
sad that it needed to be an antique, but useful info.
Thank you. Yes. It's sad. But love how it looks now in my home. Definitely a highlight of conversation when my family comes over.
Looking at the wood and the carvings it looks like maybe this is a reproduction piece?? 🤷🏻♀️. Mighty good shape for an antique.
I love the end result, this is my kind of style. I think I would have painted the wood, but reupholstered with new fabric. Just saying…cause I’m lazy like that. 😂
I bought it from a family that said it was an heirloom from the 1800's. Not sure if that's true. Thanks. I love it so much.
I love it
Thanks.
