I love this movie. It's one of two directed by Dan O'Bannon, who's best known as the co-writer of Alien and Total Recall. His other film is The Resurrected aka Shatterbrain. It's based on a H P Lovecraft story and it's well worth seeing. Unfortunately, O'Bannon suffered from Crohn's disease and it limited his directorial output. He died from complications of the disease at age 63.
Here's something you might enjoy. It's a zombie themed song from Jonathan Coulton called RE: Your Brains.

This was the first zombie movie to introduce the concept that zombies eat brains
And if you pay attention to the eye exam chart on the wall in Frank's office the letters read "BURT IS A SLAVE DRIVER AND A CHEAP SON OF A BITCH" 🤣
And the 2 leads (the supply warehouse owner and the embalmers names are Burt and Ernie
And the first 2 paramedics that show up at the funeral home are credited as Tom and Jerry 🤣

I didn't know what it was at first. I became deeply worried after seeing blood in my urine. Then went to the hospital and they ran an x-ray and told what was causing the pain. And why the cadaver went straight for Burt when they let it out of the freezer, because he was the only living thing in the room.

FUN FACT: George Romero and John Russo, the creators of Night of the Living Dead had something of a falling out over legal disputes regarding these films. As a result, each settled to title their zombie films in a specific way. Romero's work continued on as "of the Dead" and Russo was allowed "of the Living Dead". This film was released the same time as Romero's "Day of the Dead", so title distinctions had to be made, so as to avoid confusion and to separate the two franchises.

@@theshakyproject2971 my main issue with the remake is that a lot of the characters are very tropey and generic horror movie characters. it's not a bad movie but doesn't really stand out that much when compared to all the other zombie media made in recent years. the original might have zombies that don't look all that great, but just the way the movie was made, them having access to the mall at night and having to film and clean everything by morning, basically making things up as they went by just asking the special effects crew what else they can do and the social commentary make the original a more memorable movie to me.

from what i heard there were several things that made Romero and Russo fall out. the fact that they lost Night of the Living Dead to some shady distributors and they had creative differences about the sequel. Romero went on to do Dawn of the Dead and Russo went on to do the novel of Return of the Living Dead which isn't even the same story as the movie version. Although Russo would end up writing the novelization of the movie version too. If it hadn't been for DotD being a hit, RotLD would have never been made. Everyone wanted to cash in on the zombie movie craze. Especially in Europe.

The brilliant thing about this is how it filps all of Romero's "zombie rules" around. They're fast, they talk, and they're basically unkillable. It also chages how the zombies are created and makes it a "meta" film with the Night of the Living Dead reference. Dan O'Bannon, cowriter of Alien, rewrote a script by Night of the Living Dead cocreator John Russo..and was given the chance to direct for the first time with this. He knew Romero had a zombie movie coming out the same time this was (Day of the Dead), so as not to step on his toes, made his a comedy and turned all the rules on their head. Also, seem like it had the OG sound mix in tact, which is great because it's been remixed poorly since the original release... this is by far my preferred version.

Did you notice? The medical supply company owner and the mortuary owner who have been life long friends? They are "Bert and Ernie"! ;-D
"Trash" was played by Lynnea Quigley -- she's most famous for that role but has been a queen of B-horror movies ever since. She's still starring in schlock horror films today.

Pay attention to the eye exam chart in the background in the managers office
It reads "Burt is a slave driver and a cheap son of a b!tch" 😄
and the first 2 paramedics who show up at the mortuary are credited as Tom and Jerry 😂

The writer of this movie, Dan O'Bannon, was also a co-writer of the first "Alien" movie directed by Ridley Scott. O'Bannon also wrote a very low budget and obscure movie called "Dark Star", where 4 men are on a long mission blowing up rogue planets where Pinback, (played by O'Bannon}, was accidentally mistaken for one of the astronauts of that mission and ended up in that space craft. John Carpenter helped O'Bannon produce that movie.
