    Luxury is different for everyone. For some, it’s wearing expensive brands like Gucci, Supreme, and Rolex. For others it’s wearing a very high quality, subtle sweater that costs $1,000. The difference in perception is old money vs new money thinking. And trust us, Loyal Theorists, the way that you think about rich people is all WRONG!

    Ok but... you can't exactly claim that something from Zara is high quality and long lasting... if you really want to recreate the "quiet luxury" look on a budget, you'd be better going thrifting or looking for vintage pieces second hand, since older items are usually more well-made and will last a lot longer (and can be cheap if you get the right deals) than mass-produced cheap stuff from Zara.

    • @4Roman204

      I find you have to be lucky or thrift often. Everytime I go thrifting in the ones near me, I just see really old T shirts, hoodies, and second hand fast fashion. 😢 The vintage stores on the other hand aren’t cheap either. Location, luck, and how often you go all play a part. I’ve had no luck and I’ve been to several local shops

      Not sure how Zara is like where you're from but where I live Zara clothes have been durable, well made with luxurious fabrics, beautifully stitched and best of all, fall on your body in a way that flatters it. And they're no more expensive than Zara anywhere else.

    I'm an English teacher, and I love teaching The Great Gatsby. One of the things I always point out is the difference between how Gatsby flashes his money about with his parties, his car, and his clothes (specifically the pink suit) while the Buchanans don't feel the need to do any of this. It's always fun to get kids to recognize the difference between new and old money in the real world and how on point F. Scott Fitzgerald was (and still is) with his assessment.

    My grandma's relatives are all in that top 5%, I think they are just between the old and new rich. I was given some hand me downs from one who had cancer and wound up losing a ton of weight during treatment. It is exactly like Mat talks about. The jackets are very sturdy, they are also soft and nice and toned down. I like them a lot and wear them over some of my other clothes. Granted, I can't button them because I have large shoulders and these were tailored to a small shouldered person. But keeping the front open is fine.
    Regretfully, I don't like going out into public with those relatives. While they are super nice to be around at home, they have exceedingly high expectations of everything and they wound up embarrassing me to no end at my favorite coffee shop in town because they wound up basically telling the coffee shop that they need to relearn how to make coffee... yeah... Anyway, I do definitely like that style more. Extremely patterned stuff just feels awkward to me.

    "The tip to dressing rich without being rich is to be rich." Gwenyth Paltrow's outfit was, give or take, $6000. 10% of that, which would be the cost of the outfit that MatPat gave us, would still be $600. That's two months worth of groceries for the average American home.
    ETA: I understand the point behind making that comment. This is no hate to MatPat; I just think it is important to keep that in mind when watching this.

    • @dragonboyjgh
      @dragonboyjgh 10 місяців тому +9

      Ah, but you went for minimalist quality instead of trendiness. So that $600 outfit might last you 10 years. Buy 5 and you can dress like that for the entire workweek. $3000 over 10 years is less than a dollar a day, the same as 2 WoW subscriptions or 1.5 subs to photoshop, to dress classy like you're from old money, with all of the associated social perks.

    • @barmayden2300
      @barmayden2300 10 місяців тому +6

      @dragonboyjgh , so you suggest taking out a $3k personal loan for 5 outfits that you plan on wearing for 10 years? Cute but I'll prioritize my other bills first. Thanks.

    • @dragonboyjgh
      @dragonboyjgh 10 місяців тому

      @@barmayden2300 if you're living paycheck to paycheck, then yeah, obviously yes you should pay off your bills first, this isn't available as an option in those circumstances. But my point is that $3000 isn't an impossible amount of money either. If you're not living at literal poverty level, it's something that can be saved up for, like a used car.
      And looking like you belong to a higher class than you do can open doors. Doors to better income.
      Nor do you even need to purchase all 5 at once to see results. If you know when most of your opportunities for impressing and schmoozing will be happening, you can just buy the 1 set for $600, then get around to filling out the wardrobe once you've started to see returns on your investment. And if you can't save just $50 a month for a year for the purpose of improving your situation, then you've either taken on way too much responsibility for yourself, or need to reconsider your lifestyle, either at the occupational or expense side.
