Hey Theorists, how short are your pants? Are they as short as Pedro Pascal’s shorts at the 2023 Met Gala? Or as long as Rihanna’s flowing Valentino Haute Couture gown? Well take a good look because your answer may determine whether we’re actually in an economic recession or time of prosperity. But, wait… how is that possible? Your shorts can’t ACTUALLY predict the future, can they? Hang on to those short shorts because we’re about to find out!

Crazy how MatPat can turn short-shorts into the collapse of the global economy.
😂 This sounds like a Regular Show episode
@@SnrLoape Just started watching it, those dudes seriously slacked off at planting chairs and then wandered into the shed just to accidentaly release world destroying video game demon, already one of the best shows I ever watched and that's alongside Breaking Bad
MatPat is the only person in the history of the world that can do that
Matpat is the King of finding LLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEE
True, but remember, it’s a theory, a STYLE theory
This feels less like predictive and more like indicative. Having different length clothing didn't precede changes in economy but occurred as a result of it.
Yep. That’s basically it in a nutshell.
Well, predicting something isn't in any way causing it.
(Remember Bruno from Encanto as an example? 😉)
@@eglol , of course predictions are not necessarily causes (though they can be), but they still have to occur prior to what they are predicting. That's why the word includes the "pre-" prefix.
That's what I was thinking throughout the entire video
@@SgtSupaman do dict = know also orphan-word
I'd love to see a theory about professional uniform, e.g. doctor, scientist, and how we perceive that person. It's a really interesting area, with some crazy studies
You can get into almost anywhere with a high vis jacket, clipboard, and acting like you should be there
@@kimarna And almost anywhere else if you switch out your hi-vis for a nice-but-not-too-nice suit jacket
Well, there was that 19-year-old who pretended to be a doctor and nobody questioned him when he wandered around a hospital...
There’s such thing as White Coat Hypternsion where patients experience high blood pressure whenever they see a doctor wearing their white coat.
Doctors and dentists usually wear green or blue scrubs because the sight of blood on them is less unsettling than it is on the white that they used to wear. The contrast is lower.
Men weren't wearing sweat pants in 2020. They were wearing no pants. The ultimate short shorts!
Exactly my thoughts!!
My thoughts aswell
I feel called out.
I was switching between pants for work and gym shorts at home. I still had to go to work since I'm an 'essential worker' which means I'm risking my life to go to work (according to politicians and media) but got paid way less than if I had been an 'unessential worker' where I'd get to sit on my arse at home and collect my base pay plus $600 instead of just my base pay (sorry, everytime I'm reminded of that fact it makes just a wee bit irritated). At home I usually wear gym shorts because my condo (which is more of an apartment) gets way to hot (boiler heat in the winter that I have no control over and AC is too expensive, assuming the ancient wall mount unit works at all, to run in the summer).
just what I was gonna comment!
Matpat can literally prove anything as a theory and it works
A...you are not wrong?
Theories are by definition unproven.
ua-cam.com/video/vgADXefQRdQ/v-deo.html
@@trajectoryunown how do you define "proof"?
@@zyansheep in a way, just lack of contrary evidence lmao
I always think matpats theories can't get any crazier, and then he does stuff like this😂
Not really. Consider this wasn't his original theory
I truly feel like Style Theory might be the craziest of the theorist channels
Game theory would say other wise
Personally I think style theory is more useful than Game Theory
All 3 other channels would say otherwise
One of my ex-professor's favorite sentences is “correlation is not causation” and I think this phrase has the perfect match with this episode.
I mean, I'll note for the 2020's, the hemline index still works for men when you realize that a lot of the times, in those zoom calls, many men were just in their underwear, AKA 'no hemline at all'.
"The hemline index" never worked. That was the point at the end of the video. "Many men" were just in their underwear, but also, "many men" weren't. Not everyone was working over Zoom. To make the "hemline index" appear to work, you gotta cherry-pick the messy data. Even one of the premises, that Pedro Pascal's shorts represented our current times -- that one single guy in one single fashion show was the marker for "most" or "all" men -- makes it pretty clear that he was using small pieces of data as representative of the whole.
@@Starcrash6984 yes I know. I was making a joke on how you could say that it was the worst economic year because men chose to not wear hemlines at all.
Pedro Pascal is really in every episode by now
ua-cam.com/video/vgADXefQRdQ/v-deo.html
I was about to say that
Because Mattpat is a Simp lol
Pedro rolls in the views I guess
I am okay with this. MatPat's starry-eyed fangirling is delightful, much like Pedro himself.
Thank you for explaining how patterns in statistics are interpreted, my stats teacher always said knowing how to interpret a statistic is just as important as the statistic itself
I legit love when he makes these insane theories that no one in the right mind would even dream of, it makes my world happier honestly.
As long as MatPat has his Diet Coke and Pedro Pascal we can expect more theory’s 💀
And fnaf
@@Pikachu777_ of course
yes
Uh oh
Can you do a video about ballgowns? I’m curious if they was any LORE behind wearing big fluffy dress at a ball.
Note: this was a question I just made up, so idk if there is anything about ballgown dresses. So you don’t have to try this idea
There is the lore of women being able to literally take up space in a male dominated society. Of course fashion is a lot more complicated, but this is one cool angle for the large ball gowns.
@@sonjaimmonen6610 I think those women just like big ballgowns or they wanted to show wealth.
Also, I’m pretty sure if Pedro Pascal actually bought that outfit, it’d be in the THOUSANDS of dollars. Most of these Met Gala looks are loaners or custom designs anyway, so it’s pretty unlikely you could base an economic theory on it.
Ever since you did your "washing your legs" episode, I've been curious: what does conditioner actually do and do we actually need to use it? Answer me, MatPat!
Forgot to add: Also, which is better? Washing conditioner and shampoo separately? Or using 2 in 1?
i think there are far too many types of hair to field test this and to come to an absolute yes or no answer; however, a scientific look on what conditioner does--or should be doing for different hair types--would be a great watch
I thought conditioner reintroduced clean moisture to your hair after you washed it clean with shampoo. Kind of like lotion but for your hair
As far as I remember, conditioner has two functions:
1- adding moisture to your hair after you stripped all the oils with the shampoo (so, conditioner is particularly important if you have dry hair, but not really necessary if you're like me with that extra oily hair).
2- balance the static of your hair to remove frizz (which makes it tangle less and makes it easier to comb/brush).
There are different types of conditioners with other functions, though. From curl intensifiers to straighteners, detangling and colour toner ones to pair with colour toner shampoos, among others; there are many different types of conditioners with specific functions.
Well, I have curly hair, and o know that certain conditioners can make curly hair curlier
This is the kind of content I love. Similar to Food Theory's Coffee Cannabis episode, these kinds of deep dives into fashion history blended with weird economic factoids are the literal best things ever.
When was that episode?
@@kimarna August 20, 2020 on the Food Theory channel
The thing with the Hemline index is a common thing you can do with statistics. You can find any pattern you want to any level of precision you want as long as you're prepared to ignore enough data.
10:05 that are not pants anymore, that's underwear
I wrote an essay on this in 1991 and it came back in a college economics textbook in 1993. Glad to see it coming back on UA-cam in 2023. One of my favourite indices.
7:28 nice style theory skirt 😂
I love how unhinged style theory is, thanks MattPatt
I remember 2008.. I went to a predominately black school… around 2008 we stopped wearing baggie clothes and went into a phase we called “black boy white style” Levi’s and polo style shirt American Eagle was much cheaper than are previous styles.. I loved it because it was simple east and cheaper

matpat is the only person who can make a logo out of hairy legs
hey theorists!!! can you do a video about how to preserve your pants/jeans? im talking about the chubby rub that develops in the groin area. im not chubby, i walk a lot and my jeans degrade in about 6-8 months and are my biggest annual clothing expense. they just dont last.
My two biggest tips from a former fat girl who could wear through jeans rapidly - 1. Only get jeans that are 98% cotton or more. You usually can't find 100% and probably wouldn't want it as it will hardly stretch. 2. Only wash your jeans every 10 wears or until they have substantial dirt or any smell. Between wears hang them up to air out. The higher the natural fabric content, the better they air out.
Adhesive patches, you cannot fight the rub
I think everyone who watches his theory videos, agrees with most of it because it ALWAYS makes sense 😂😂😂
I think it would be kinda interesting to see a video (or short) on the effects of shampoo for dogs on human hair and if it’s better or worse in comparison to our main brands shampoo. It just seems like a fun idea to test and it’s a catchy concept :)
We definitely are in an increasing recession but I’m really glad you ended up saying that fashion doesn’t REALLY have a correlation to wether we’re going to have one or not.

7:57 Mat Pat says "Just look at the ads during this era." The picture on the screen is not an advertisement, it is a sewing pattern. The word "Simplicity" (a well known sewing pattern brand) runs down the side pf the picture.
9:02 You know who ELSE looks into all the data?
MY MOM!
Honestly, I just wear my clothes based on the temperature of the week.
If it's hot, then it's short season for the top and the bottom.
If it's cold, then that means it's reached trouser temperature and jogging bottoms.
Why does Matt pat always manage to convince me on anything
Me who has ocd reading the title: well duh that’s what the voices in my head keep telling me, wearing this black shirt will be bad luck but if I wear it with these red socks then it will be neutral luck.
Honestly I’m ready for the hemlines to go back down. There is a distinct lack of fabric that covers pretty much anything in most of the stores today 🙄
This aged well…
matpat be working pedro pascal into every one of his videos now
Forget canibal crossover week we need a pedro pascal crossover week
This episode reminded me just how much it must have sucked to live through history with a phobia of buttons.
Another fun fashion correlation is the one about high heels :). Apparently the better the economic condition, the higher the 👠 .
these types of videos are my favorite, seeing how and why aesthetics evolve the way they do is fascinating
6:44 this is crazy how face of woman in strawbarry skirt look like MatPat
That Style Theory title card made with Pedro's knees caught me really off guard 😂
I love these "well yes, but actually no" episodes xD
that style theory logo using pedro pascal's knees will forever live in my nightmares
I appreciate the end critique of data and statistics presentation. There's a world of difference in how someone responds to hearing something's gone up by 50% and that it's risen from 2 up to 3.
I have an idea for a style theory episode: Which type of cloth is the best in terms of e.g. cost, durability, functionality, sustainability of production and waste processing,...
I reckon cotton will be high on that list, but silk and natural synthetic fibres could have the leg up in some areas.
10:23 you know things are getting real bad real quick when may pat starts getting scared from his own theory
0:18 wait WHAT?!
I love the hemline index. As a fashion history student I had to do an entire research paper on this and how effective its possible predictions could be in western countries.
I Appreciate the conclusion. It is frustrating when things aren't cut and dry but it's even more frustrating when sources give conflicting/mis information
2:46 I did not need to see that
Matpat Out of Context 💀
The men's hemline in 2020 was actually so high we weren't wearing pants at all.
We were already in a global recession, the shorts just caught up.
4:24 my dads favourite tool
Stoooppppo 💀💀 same but stooooopppp😭
I think it’s typically easier to tell by heel height. Like hem lengths, it does fall out of sync some, but it stays more consistent than hem length
Please do an episode on which general camo pattern is better. MARPAT, OCP's, or hunter camo.
Hi mat pat I love that your able to post so frequently means more fun for me
Style theory idea do two in one shampoo conditioners actually do the job of both shampoo and conditioner
I love matpat and his incredible theories!😊
yes sir
7:20 The funniest part there, if they had called themselves the "little on the nose club", they would no longer have been "on the nose" with their name.
The thing is that baggy under the knee length jorts are one of the biggest trends this summer
It lurks in the shadows,
out of His spotlight,
His view.
He dances on the stage,
weaving a web of lies.
But you must venture beyond the cage,
and find where It cries.
Find the truth.
The photo where you can see women walking on the street at 5:33 is not from America in the 30s but Afghanistan in the 60s
Halfway through the video I was thinking Matpat seems to be cherry picking examples that support his theories. Glad he acknowledged it at the end.
What I'm curious about is - does the hemline index apply only to USA economy or does it apply globally? Or to other individual countries? ie. S.Korean youngsters have pretty short shorts/skirts. Does it correlate with their economy? Cos dressing style would differ drastically across different cultures right?
I've heard about this theory before, but the one I've heard was how the taller the shoes, the worse for the economy
it's fun to hear another spin on it
I appreciate the transparency at the end about how the data doesn't always line up
I love the history tour in this theory!
To stay true to ✨science✨ though, we shouldn't forget that correlation doesn't mean causation. So even though this pattern is certainly something that strikes attention, it doesn't necessarily prove a direct connection between the shortness of clothes and economy.
MatPat ‘s style theory just feels like a mixture of all of the other channels
I loved that self reflection at the end of the video, they should do that more
I super love this channel, it might be my favorite one of the theory channels
11:06 It looks like a mustache.
I learned about the hemline index in fashion school! But I didn't know about the men's fashion getting shorter when women's got longer...interesting!
MatPat and Pedro would be besties change my mind
matthews crush on pedro pascal is saving my 2023 tbh
girl we already in a recession
We love the future telling knee caps 😂😂😂
ua-cam.com/video/vgADXefQRdQ/v-deo.html
I personally wear what I have in my closet, and buy what I like. It's not dependent on the economy. My clothes have been known to last deccades, and I continue to wear it regardless of fashion trends or economic conditions.
Theory idea! What is the best looking and most useful outfit for any apocalypse?
I mean in the wise words of Youngster Joey “Shorts are comfortable and easy to wear”
I ❤ all your theories 🤓
Given what I heard about zoom meetings, a lot of dudes were wearing athletic shorts or only underwear, so I would consider that to be pretty short. I personally wore athletic shorts during the shutdowns as opposed to the jeans I normally wear
This is why Style Theory is great. I would’ve honestly never even known about this weird but unique way of predicting the economy
12:30 actually wearing just undies down there was a thing for a while, so I think the index actually held up here
They actually covered this on the British panel show QI. HIghly recommend it if you haven't seen it.
Even I can verify the whole shorts thing for 2020. More often than not, I found myself often wearing shorts, mostly ones that just barely reach the knee, though the shorts s&p can also signify rising global temperatures.
me trying to predict the next housing market crash by psychoanalyzing my friends outfits:

love you MatPat! ❤
I'd love to see this principle applied more practically with certain materials being available or in high demand compared to eras where it's low in demand due to financial constraints
This episode reminded me of my grandma. She was so happy seeing me wearing hosiery (I wore them rarely).
It feels like it's just a history lesson 😅
What?!?? Matpat has some crazy theories nowadays
He really cant recover from all the fnaf theory videos he did
Love seeing that classic Simplicity sewing pattern for men's shorts.
Love seeing about historical fashion!
