    Wholesalers in NZ are happy to supply a roll of cable and credit what you return. Tossing it seems a huge waste, but also understand storage cost would not be economical. There's another reason to grow, because eventually, it will pay to have some sort of office and storage. Cheers, David.

    Where we work... small towns, we have gardens. My colleague's shed is a veritable loveliness of handy offcuts of armoured. The T&E gets carried on the van, handy for links. Other less usual sized cable, or weird types, gets scrapped for the copper. (although 10" lengths of 25mm meter tail did come in handy on a job the other day where space was cramped.

    • @daanwilmer
      @daanwilmer 5 років тому +6

      I doubt if that would be economically viable, as you'd need to have a unit (let's call it the scrap bin) and drive there regularly to store your stuff, just in case you need one of your scrap bits. Let's say he has a use for this 10m 3 core 4mm armoured cable. To buy new would cost 30 pounds online (first hit I could find), so that would be the maximum savings for this one item. Every minute he spends extra driving to the scrap bin would eat into those 30 pounds, so any savings would be gone if it takes somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour extra to go to the scrap bin after work and store it, and then for the next job to go to the scrap bin before work and retrieve it. With careful planning and minimal disruptions it might not take that much extra time per item stored, especially if it saves a trip to the store (but I wonder how often that would be the case), but it still eats away at the potential savings per item. Then all those savings need to also pay for the unit (estimated at 30 to 50 pounds per week, depending on the size), so you'd need to have a use for those scraps multiple times a week to make it break even.

    • @loosecannon5813
      @loosecannon5813 5 років тому +1

      Keeping scrap cable is not on any level a money maker, I break even at best.i wait untill I've 25-30 bags stored (10kg each), this collecting, bagging and storing takes a good few hours in itself, then take to knackers yard, maybe 3 hrs loading /driving/waiting around/unloading to get back £220-£250 (which technically has to be declared).
      I get a sense of 'saving the planet' about me tho,i guess that sense of wellbeing makes it all worthwhile.

    Lucky enough to have storage with a log of what's in so if i need the 10m of armourd for a shed supply or whatever I know it's in and I can supply the customer straight from storage , any left over materials from a job will either be deducted from invoice or taken in the waste disposal terms

    Would it be worth buying a large van, keep it legal but park it somewhere near you just for storage? There’s always the option to rent a lockup if there’s any near you that’s reasonably priced.

    I’m over in Northern Ireland so I’m not sure, but surely you have a lock up facility or storage units around there somewhere?
